5 out of 5 stars I'm rating the author..........2007-08-12

Alright, I'll confess: I haven't read the book. However, I HAVE taken an english composition class taught by Deborah Straw, and let me tell you, she's a wonderful educator and very passionate about animals. I still go to her for literary advice.

Just a little piece of info about the author that might make you feel good about buying the book...

5 out of 5 stars an invaluable resource for animal lovers.......2006-01-03

The Healthy Pet Manual is a revised and expanded edition of Straw's already excellent earlier
book, Why Is Cancer Killing Our Pets? Cancer is the number one killer of most domestic
animals, dogs being the most vulnerable to this disease. A thorough researcher who was highly
motivated by the loss of four of her own dogs to cancer, Straw has made a careful study of the
environmental, dietary, and iatrogenic (vaccine-related) causes of this modern scourge. In this
well organized and beautifully written book she covers the bases with a sensible blend of
conventional and alternative approaches to the prevention and treatment of the disease.

As a person whose life has been immeasurably enriched by a series of remarkable dogs and who
finds it difficult to deal with their mortality, I found The Healthy Pet Manual to be full of
practical information that helps me to face my dog's future with greater confidence. This book is
an invaluable resource for anyone who loves and lives with animals. Two paws up!

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any pet owner.......2005-11-07

When author Deborah Straw lost four animals to cancer, she became frustrated enough about the lack of information about the disease to investigate - and The Healthy Pet Manual: A Guide To The Prevention And Treatment Of Cancer is the result. Pet owners may not realize cancer is the number one killer of most domestic animals: this revised, expanded edition of Why Is Cancer Killing Our Pets includes the latest research and preventative measures owners can take, from watching food to understanding how vaccines may influence cancer developments in pets. A 'must' for any pet owner.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for tough times.......2005-09-24

It is a sad fact that many pets will succumb to some kind of cancer in their lifetime. It is also a fact that some veterinarians may lack the time, knowledge, and/or communication skills to answer owners' questions about this disease, its treatment, and prevention. This well-written and well-researched book helps fill that gap by providing two valuable kinds of information. First, it reviews some of the latest information about cancer in animals. Second, the extensive notes at the end of the book provide numerous references for those who would like to explore certain subjects in more detail. This combination results in a quality guide to the complex world of animal cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reference book.......2005-09-05

Highly recommended for anyone concerned about their dog's health. Information that is user friendly and not easily available from any other source. There is a particularly good chapter on pain management - which is a field vets are only now beginning to understand. Deborah Straws writes with compassion from a pet owner's point of view - making the latest scientific and pet-related environmental issues easily accessible. An essential reference book for concerned pet owners.

Museum pieces and advertising signs round out the presentation in this wide ranging text. A history of the Franciscan ware potteries is included, along with their manufacturer's marks. A listing of the vessel forms available in each pattern and updated values are provided to complete this informative guide.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......1999-06-11

It has nice pictures, however, it doesn't give any price guidelines. It would be helpful to have all the manufactures markings in it rather than just a few.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent color photos of Franciscan Ware with fine comments.......1999-03-18

If you want the curent average price of Franciscan serving pieces, this is not your book. If you want excellent color photos of the breadth of the Franciscan Ware line, clear photos of the various trademarks, and a concise history of Franciscan Ware, then this is an excellent book. I am afraid that it will eventually prove to be one of the most expensive gifts I have ever given.

2 out of 5 stars Limited usefullness: some factual errors; shows all patterns.......1999-03-03

This book is excellent in that it shows all the Franciscan patterns. Beyond that its' usefullness is limited. Superficial discussion of the history of Gladding & McBean and the evolution of the Franciscan line of pottery. Not nearly enough space devoted to the "art and serving" pieces. As a price guide it has no value whatsoever.

1 out of 5 stars ok for general patterns.......1999-01-06

book does not list prices for any serving peices...not very usefu

    Book Description

A marvelous story about a man who went it alone and got it done. Translated into all languages, this story has become a model for success.

    Download Description

This literary trifle, A Message To Garcia, was written one evening after supper, in a single hour. It was on the 22nd of February, 1899, Washington's Birthday. And on an order of the Mikado, a copy was given to every man in the employ of the Japanese Government, soldier or civilian. Over forty million copies of A Message To Garcia have been printed. This is said to be a larger circulation than any other literary venture has ever attained during the lifetime of an author, in all history. Please Note: This book has been reformatted to be easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation. The Adobe eBook has bookmarks at chapter headings and is printable up to two full copies per year. Both versions are text searchable.

5 out of 5 stars An essay is not a bedtime story.......2007-08-08

Some of the comments in here are glaring examples of what's missing in American thought--a study of one's own history, of the evolution of American culture, and an appreciation for concise, grammatically correct, well-turned English.

Elbert Hubbard's little article reached more than 40 million readers worldwide in his own time, by the efforts of others. For anyone to play it down as obscure is to display one's own ignorance. The booklet was deemed worthy for decades after his death in 1915. Should you bother to read his introduction, which is available all over the web, you might learn as much from the man himself.

You might also discover Lieutenant Rowan's own account, which, if you suspend your 21st Century yen for sensationalism, is an earnest tale of perseverance and dedication. Rowan's account is informative, but his deed is merely the example Hubbard uses to make a broader point. There was a time when Americans could simply honor integrity and accomplishment without the compulsion to ridicule. You will not find value in this small piece by applying a contemporary context to it. Rather, take it as an excellent essay that has stood the test of time far longer than any of us have lived.

It's not about you, it's not about me, it's about a man who lived a hundred years ago and, like the men and women of our armed forces today, performed. Too many civilians have never learned how to deliver, how to do something simply because it needs doing, rather than talk about it. And that is what Hubbard's piece shows--that the weak in spirit are still among us and probably always will be. Unfortunately, several reviewers here fail the man's test in the most embarrassing way.

If you can, look up more of Hubbard's writings. He's clever and adroit and unapologetic. If you prefer political correctness, don't bother, because he lived and wrote before that insipid notion ever took hold. A Message To Garcia is but the most famous of Hubbard' works. Try his "Little Journeys" series for a flavor of America as we embarked on the 20th Century. There's more to the man than this "message" tells.

1 out of 5 stars waste of money.......2007-08-03

To be quite frank, this book is an utter waste of money. More than half of the pages are blank - wasted paper and space. And on the pages that actually have print, the formatting is simply horrific.

5 out of 5 stars An inspirational essay about reliability & tenacity.......2007-05-31

A Message to Garcia was written by Elbert Hubbard in an hour and published on the March, 1899 issue of the Philistine magazine, of which he was the publisher and editor. The essay was originally intended as filler for the magazine and it didn't even have a title. After the magazine was published, requests started coming in for that particular issue and the demand for the essay grew and grew. The essay ended up selling over 40 million copies and has been translated into several languages.
Calixto Iñiguez Garcia was a leader of the Cuban insurgency and was a key person during the Spanish-American war. A message needed to be delivered to him so that the United States could coordinate their strategy with him. Mr. Garcia was hidden in the mountains of Cuba and the US had no means of communicating with him, it was suggested to the President that there was a man by the name of Andrew Summers Rowan that could find Garcia and deliver the message. Mr Rowan, a West Point graduate, was given his marching orders and without questions he placed the letter in a pouch and reached the coast of Cuba a few days later and a few weeks later delivered the message to Garcia.
Hubbard uses the message of the story to illustrate the need for us to be like Rowan: A person that can deliver the goods with no questions, hesitations, excuses or complaints. He goes on to deliver an impactful message of reliability, persistence and tenacity. We all crave to be surrounded by people that can deliver A MESSAGE TO GARCIA.

3 out of 5 stars Two separate messages and one is, sadly, based on a lie.......2007-05-19

There are two messages in this little book and different reviewers pay attention to different ones. The first message is the capability of Rowan who successfully delivers the message showing courage, self-reliance, and initiative--all admirable qualities. The other message is that managers value employees who ask no questions and do what they're told with a minimum of directions. Asking no questions only works with managers who are infallible and leads to employees who can claim "I was only following orders".

Unfortunately, the story that the author provides about Rowan is, at best, a fable and, at worst, a self-serving lie (given that the author is a manager). What actually happened was that (from Wikipedia) Rowan was hidden by Cuban rebels in Jamaica before his being taken to Cuba and was met by 200 cavalry and delivered to Garcia. The reward for his "unquestioning" behavior was that he was held by the British quarantine in the Bahamas for ten days and was given combat command of a company of African American troops assumed to be immune to jungle diseases and who died as quickly as any troops once infected. The war itself killed more U.S. personnel by malaria than by bullets.

While the Rowan of the fable is admirable in all ways, perhaps the manager, and the country, would have been better served if some one had asked some questions about what was being done.

              Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
