Above average material........2004-07-09
Manual offers consistant information, more consistent than other manuals published on this subject. Devoid of redundancy, unlike Mordecai Siegal's below par hardback, which was an unecessary sale and publish. The payment price for others are economical, but not in a specific way. Cairns may actually have purchased this pet in order to write, publish, and order this superior guide to sale. There are numbers of manuals released on this Retriever, which creates a serious dilemma. Purchase useless material, or the most useful and economical manual sold in modern day. Not recommended are shorter guides which are not seen abundantly in stores. 60 page or more manuals are likely to be helpful in domestic maintainence purposes. This manual is included on this list.
Wonderful handbook for the Golden owner.......2001-08-31

Supreme example of a specialist reference work........2001-02-17
Walking through the Victoria & Albert museum in London a few years back, little did I know that the collection of British biscuit tins that had me mesmerized was donated by the late M.J. Franklin. The quality of this book featuring his collection is absolutely magnificent. The book is a rectangular shape and contains 325 stunning colour plates printed on thick glossy paper. It is bound in red cloth accompanied by gilt print on the cover. It is further protected by a hard sleeve decorated with old biscuit advertisements. The greater theme of this book is the art of decorative packaging. Three eras are defined being: Victorian(1868-1901), Edwardian(1902-1914) and Twenties & Thirties(1920-1939). There are extensive details i.r.o. date, company(the firm that used the tin), title, manufacturer, size, history and further marks of each tin (where available). It is one of the few specialist books that will be enjoyed by each and every person that appreciates any form of extinct art such as decorating biscuit tins. It is one of those rare books that you wish everybody could see. The author's royalties have been given to the national society for mentally handicapped children.

Book Description
By the author-and-illustrator team of the bestselling The Library
Lydia Grace Finch brings a suitcase full of seeds to the big gray city, where she goes to stay with her Uncle Jim, a cantankerous baker. There she initiates a gradual transformation, bit by bit brightening the shop and bringing smiles to customers' faces with the flowers she grows. But it is in a secret place that Lydia Grace works on her masterpiece -- an ambitious rooftop garden -- which she hopes will make even Uncle Jim smile. Sarah Stewart introduces readers to an engaging and determined young heroine, whose story is told through letters written home, while David Small's illustrations beautifully evoke the Depression-era setting.

DELIGHTFUL - THIS IS ONE TO READ WITH YOUR CHILD. .......2007-05-04
The time of this story takes place in the mid 1930s and the family of the little girl of the story has had some hard times as so many families did during those horrible years. Briefly, the little girl is sent to live with her uncle Jim in the city until her father can find work and get the family back on thier feet. The author has chosen to tell this story via letter written back home to the little girl's family, by the girl herself. The story is through her eyes. The story is excellent, as it points out just what one person, even a little one, can do to change people lives. The running theme throughout of course is the little girls love for gardening. I certainly will not go into a blow by blow account of the plot, etc. as that has been done here several times, and done quite well. The text though, is quite readable and the illustrations are great. One other theme, other than the gardening, that runs through the story, is the fact that the little girl seems to be quite concerned over the fact that uncle Jim never smiles. In the end....well, you will have to read the story yourself, does he or does he not smile...you figure it out! Love this book and recommend it highly.
Know an avid gardener?.......2007-01-31
This children's book is a great gift for anyone with a heart who loves to garden. The little girl in the story must go to live with her uncle during hard times. He is a gruff baker but his little niece brightens his world with her loving charm and amazing gardening skills.
A Book in Letters and Pictures.......2007-01-19
This is a book is written as a series in letters and has a lot of great pictures. It is about a little girl whose mother and father don't have jobs. She also has a grandmother who gave her, her love for gardening. Lynda-Grace (the girl) has to go live with her uncle who never smiles. When she gets there she finds out that her uncle own a bakery and has helpers. One of the helpers name's is Emma. Emma and Lynda-Grace and Emma have a scheme to make Uncle Jim smile! Read the book to find out what happens!
This is a really good picture book. As I said before, it is in teh form of letters from Lynda-Grace to her parent's and grandmother. It is a fantastic book for all ages!
Give "The Gardener" a try!
A wonderful book on several levels.......2007-01-10
My mom bought this book last year for my daughter, now 6. My daughter loves gardening and "old-fashioned" books, and really enjoys the story and the pictures. She focuses mostly on Lydia's garden and cat. I cry every time I read it, because I focus on the little girl leaving her parents. My mom used to read this at a parenting group she ran at a women's prison. She said all the women were touched by it, as they had the experience of sending their kids away to live with other people. My mom pointed out that while Lydia's letters are very brave and positive, the pictures often show the sadness and loneliness of Lydia's situation in the first half of the book. So this is a very complex and thoughtful book, but still simple enough to be enjoyed by young children.
The Gardener is a must have for your home or school library........2006-11-11
For those of us that love flowers... well the basic plot of planting in a dingy city will bring much enjoyment. But there is much more in this book than beautiful flowers. There is a theme of enduring and the main character, Lydia Grace, models for us that we can bloom where we are planted. And in a simple way, she models for us that getting busy with a healthy project can be a nice way to cope and persevere. Her flowers, which transform her Uncle's bakery, are a great example of how we can touch others. When we let our own life flow and gently pursue our passions maybe we help others more indirectly than if we try too hard to please or try to become something we are not.
And speaking of being authentic and real, Uncle Jim in the story demonstrates for us that we all express our emotions and feelings differently! And not only is this more than okay, it is what makes us better. Uncle Jim never smiles, even when Lydia touches his life, and it is just how he is. Lydia's concern for her Uncle Jim reminds us that we should and CAN care about others, even in the midst of our own trying times! Lydia is far from home, in a dingy city, and maybe she is too young to realize the depressing facts of the hardship around her. Or just maybe... she models for us that we need NOT get worn out and broken from hard times; instead, we need to keep on living! And when we carry on with the things we love we can possibly inspire and help others. Lydia does just this - especially when she transforms the roof with her flowers. She touches lives and leaves us with a feeling that there is strength in unity and that our individuality makes us better, more balanced, and needs to be celebrated.

Whether you have little more than a glorified big-city fire escape or a small-town backyard, British garden writer Stephen Anderton claims you can create a peaceful oasis in a hectic environment. The emphasis in Urban Sanctuaries is on the traditional backyard, but Anderton's key concepts will apply to smaller areas as well. The scale of plantings as well as water and soil supplies must be considered carefully. To make it seem larger, the pace of movement through the area should be slowed and there must be a place to sit, which seems obvious, but during the design stage the fact that eventually one will want to spend leisure time in one's garden is often overlooked. Copiously illustrated with color photographs of scores of small gardens and outdoor seating areas, the book features gardens of every persuasion, from spare, minimalist retreats to veritable urban jungles. Unfortunately, Anderton identifies few of the gardens by geographic location, though many of them look decidedly rural. Eight gardens are displayed in double-page spreads, and for those the original plans are provided and the initial design considerations are detailed. Anderton also provides a practical listing of 72 plants suitable for small gardens--tough varieties with long growing seasons. --Liana Fredley

A peaceful pleasure.......2004-08-21
This is by far one of the loveliest, most inspirational garden books I've ever read. Stephen's vision of how to create sanctuary within the garden is masterful. The photos and text are both well chosen to evoke a peaceful calm and show the reader how such a feeling can translate from paper to soil. I keep my copy close at hand whether I'm looking for ideas in designing gardens for clients, or just want to soothe my soul. A definite must.
For green thumbs living in the big city.......2002-09-06

A fine book for anyone who wants to reap the visual, fragrant, and edible wards of introducing plant life into their city home, Urban Sanctuaries is a highly recommended addition to personal, professional, and academic reading lists and reference collections.

A very useful book for any city dweller........2005-03-05
The first book in this series was not nearly as good as this one! Matt James, the author of both and extremely good garden designer really hones his craft in this book.
The books are essentially about amalgamating the concepts of gardening and design, so Matt not only aims to give you knowledge of plants, shrubs and trees, but also asks you to consider how you might use them, how they can fulfill your gardening and lifestyle needs. He designs everything from the slighest balcony of a flat to sizeable victorian terrace gardens. The principles are of use outside of the UK, people want a natural life in urban spaces the world over and this demonstrates our innate need for the outdoor life! I note this page asks for applicants for Matt's next graden makeover TV series and I would encourage anyone outside the UK, who is looking for a garden design and makeover, to apply. This Bloke REALLY knows what he is doing and what he is taking about and his writing style reflects his personality well, (at least if his TV self is real!) he is passionate but relaxed and easy going. Maybe I'm biased too but I think British Gardeners are amongst some of the best!

This is the delightful story of the resurgence in urban community gardening, describing the rehabilitation of jail inmates through raising organic vegetables, teaching inner city youngsters where food comes from, and laying out an inspirational plan to help all of us world-worn urbanites get involved once again in raising delicious food in the midst of our paved-over, formerly bleak, urban landscapes. This is about making the World a Better Place, about getting our fingers in the dirt, touching our planet with loving hands, and creating a vision of hope for our cities and our children.

Customer Reviews:
This City Gardener gives it a green thumbs up..........2006-04-25
I live in the city and I love to get my hands dirty. Too many books focus on abstract design concepts and forget about the most practical aspect of gardening - the plants. Linda Yang does an excellent job of discussing basic design and also recommending plants that do well in urban conditions (as well as explaining details such as how large certain plants will grow, whether they need constant watering, amount of sun desired).
I've owned the book for more than a year now and have dog-eared several pages for reference. I find the seasonal tips invaluable.
My only real complaint is that there was a bit too much emphasis on rooftop gardening.
Do not recommend as First book of this series.......2002-06-17
Did not meet the expectation as indicated in the title. Do not recommend it as first collection of this series. You need to be rather professional to enjoy ths book.
