Good Rabbit Care Book, Great Pictures!.......2003-10-18
THE ESSENTIAL RABBIT is a relatively recent addition to rabbit care books. It contains all of the basic information about rabbit care and has more of a focus on keeping rabbits indoors which is helpful. The author paid great attention to the organization and layout of the book which makes the book easy to use. While other rabbit books such as WHY DOES MY RABBIT by Anne McBride and THE HOUSE RABBIT HANDBOOK contain more in depth information, this book would be wonderful to use with children. It is well organized and easy to read, so parents and children can use the book together.
There is one strength of this book over most of the other rabbit care books which may be a major reason why I purchased the book. I am an amateur photographer and this book has some of the best photographs of rabbits. It will give the reader plenty of ideas for photographing pets. I find it is simply a pleasure to rummage through the pages from time to time.
Provides basics, but not much on behaviors.......2003-05-24
This book covers how to take good care of a rabbit, but it doesn't say much about rabbit behaviors or instincts. It doesn't explain circling, spraying, nipping, digging, and other common rabbit behaviors.
The book primarily describes how to take care of a pet rabbit, and that information is thorough and well written. It is written simply enough for a child age 8+ to understand.
The Essential Rabbit.......2002-05-14
I bought this book when I was just geeting started with raising rabbits as pets with 4-H. It is a very good book for anyone who has pet rabbits especaily the younger crowd. This book gives you lots of info and ideas about and for you and your rabbit in a short book. It has alot of topics and pictures. This is a book that would be good in your library when starting out with rabbits.
2nd favorite book for new rabbit owners!.......2002-01-20
My 1st favorite is The House Rabbit Society Handbook :)
I bought this book at the same time I bought my 2 baby lop-eared bunnies, Monticello and Jefferson. They are my babies and make me unbelievably happy! I never knew rabbits could be so entertaining, loving, and intelligent! This book was a life saver - I knew nothing about my new pets until I read it. I was especially grateful for the chapter on diseases. By advice of the book, I took my bunnies to the vet for a physical. I found that they had 2 common rabbit diseases that needed antibiotics. My vet called the pet store where I got them to warn them that all their bunnies had this illness - she probably saved 30 bunnies, including my babies - all thanks to the book! I went right home and read all about the illnesses. They are very healthy bunnies today :)
The Essential Rabbit (An Essential Book!).......2000-12-13
As a first time rabbit owner, I found this book very helpful. It contains information on rabbits that you wouldn't even think about asking! This is a great book with a lot of useful information about selecting a rabbit, caring for your rabbit, the different breeds, and even little rabbit facts!

Good item!!.......2007-06-17
This book really helped get us prepared for our new lil buddy!!
Highly Recommended by a Guinea Pig Rescue.......2005-11-01
A must read for any current or potential guinea pig owner! We (the TX Rustlers Guinea Pig Rescue) recommend this book to all our new guinea pig adopters.
It covers most aspects of Guinea Pig care, including caging + diet. This would be a good book for Guinea Pig novices.
As the title suggests..this is the essential guide..........2001-12-29
My niece gave my daughter her guinea pig when she was moving. I have to admit, I was not too happy with the rodent at first. I am more of a dog/cat type of person..but soon this little furry creature stole my heart. I bought this book for her to learn how to take care of the guinea pig. It has EVERYTHING you need to know about them. I have looked at several books like this in book stores, but found this one on-line and took a chance that it had all the info that we needed. It gives a history of the animals, different breeds, and all of the care instructions that you need to have a happy healthy guinea...plus it gives other resources to follow up with, which has been extrememly helpful. If you are a new guinea pig owner, this book is a must have!
This is THE Book.......2000-06-12
This Book Gives So much Good information On Guinea Pigs. They Are really fasinating creatures, you not regreat buying this book! I enjoyed reading all the little facts on guinea pigs. This is one of the best books on guinea pigs there is out there!

Repetitive manual........2004-07-15
The Essential Hamster is practically complete redundancy of Barron's Complete Manual on Hamsters. Though excellent in detail, helpful information, and photographs, this is a waste of money if you already own other manuals on this pet. Typical of this type of book, it covers: Feeding, keeping your pet healthy, behavior, medical issues, and the homecoming preparation tips after purchasing a new hamster. There is absolutely nothing new and interesting added to the "Essential" series. If you own it, fine. However, if you seek detailed, new, interesting, and superior all around material, purchase the Barron's Complete Manual on hamsters instead of this.
great book.......2003-04-27
It was a great book but there should have been a section on breeding your hamster but it did give the info you need to keep you hamster healthy.
An Excellent Hamster Book.......2002-03-19
I have owned hamsters for over a year now and have read quite a few books and websites about the cute little pets. In the last few months I have become bored with the same old stuff in all the books - most, however, have adorable pictures that make up for it, but nevertheless I hoped to find one with new information. Then - behold! - I picked up this book. A very attractive, well-made and well-written book, it is filled with new, interesting and useful info. I actually learned something from "The Hamster: An Owner's Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet"! On almost every page there is a wonderful color photo of a hamster (or, in some cases, hamsterS). I would reccommend this book to first-time hamster owners as well as the more experienced kind who are looking for new, complete information.
A helpful book.......2002-01-29
If you are interested in becoming familiar with and keeping hamsters as pets, then this is a good book. Released in 1997, it was written by Betsy Sikora Siino and is 126 pages. There are ten chapters along with informative sidebars throughout. Examples of information are physical characteristics, housing, feeding, and health. Besides a color drawing that outlines the external features of a hamster, the rest of the guide contains nice color photos. I recommend this book.
Perfect for beginners.......2001-10-21
This Book is great for the beginner hamster owner.it has chapters on the origins of the hamster, buying your hamster and its home, feeding, handling, and playing with your hamster. It covers all the basics to owning a hamster. It has a very good section on illnesses and how to handle them a section most begginer books really lack in.overall it is the best basic hamster care book I have found on the market.

"A bonanza of ferrets!".......2003-06-03
In all my years of ferret farming never have i, or my ferret, been so satisfied with a good bedtime story as 'The Essential Ferret'. Although the Ancestory isnt quite correct as Brian pointed out, it is a thoroughly engaging read and personally i rate it alongside 'Middlemarch' and 'Crime and Punishment'. Brian is my ferret. If i was to give one criticism, it would be the lack of exciting ferret fun filled photos. Although a ferret in a photo aint no real ferret, its still mighty exciting to gaze at. 'The Essential Ferret' is somewhat reminiscant of 'The Secret Weasel' by Deborah Dingos in that it also is a book. Strange considering weasels and ferrets are so similar also! This masterpiece is truely...essential.

Great Book to Start You Out With The New Ferret.......2000-07-08
This book was highly informative and I am a veteran ferret owner and consider myself knowledgeable. It's not a complete Bible on ferrets or ferret owning, but if you only choose one book, let this be it. :)
An "Essential" rip-off of "The Ferret" by M. Shefferman.......1999-12-08
Betsy Siino's book is an edited-down copy of "The Ferret: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet" by Mary Shefferman. I can find NO new material in this book; indeed, except for the removal of parts (i.e. "editing"), it is word-for-word the same. The use of a new title and the publication under an editor's name (Siino) is a shallow and greedy attempt to confuse the consumer and steal their money by suggesting they are purchasing a new book about ferrets from a new author. The lack of clear reference to the original author, Mary Shefferman, is unethical and repugnant (although apparently legal). While I highly recommend Shefferman's book, I suggest that people refuse to purchase this volume--not because of the content--but because of the unethical marketing strategy. How would you feel if someone took YOUR book, edited out parts, stripped off your name, then published it under an editor's name? The only motivation I can find for this is pure greed. Please, if you want a book on ferrets, buy a different title. Boycott this book.

The Ponder's Bible is the compleat guide to building and maintaining your very own pond. It has it all from digging the hole to the towering waterfall, including costs.
It is "Fun and easy to read and most importantly ... Informative."
"Just incredible. I'll bet you have no idea how inspiring it is for average ponders to read this."
"Wow! When I read your book, I though 'WOW! We could do that!... And we were right."
"... a very good job! I'm sick of reading books using language only a biologist could understand."
"A virtual treasure trove of information."
"Your simplicity in guidelines has made my pond building a pleasure."
Customer Reviews:
The Ponder's Bible.......2007-10-10
This is a must have book if you are going to build a pond in your yard. My husband has worn it out looking at it. It was very helpful to him.
2 thumb and 8 fingers up for this book.
Wealth of information........2007-05-07
This author offers a wealth of information! He has a lot of experience and ideas which I found useful in maintaining my new pond. I recommend this book for anyone who has a pond or wants one.
Great resource.......2007-01-04
We had a pond built in our backyard and so I bought this book. I did not find it all that helpful after the fact. But then my husband decided to build another pond and waterfall and he devoured the book and found it very helpful. Some of the advice conflicts with other professional advice however but it is good to get other points of view.
must have Pond guide for Everyone.......2006-07-04
The experience and common sense approach may be frowned upon by the pros, but that is because it cuts into their profits!
This book is a beginners bible, and a pros reference.
Best of all the high dollar pond books I have seen, and at a very reasonable price.
Poor value.......2006-04-19
This book is written in a very "folksy" style. The author does provide instructions for constructing "home-made" filters and other types of equipment. Regrettably, the paperback version of this book seems to be a xerox copy of the original hardcover edition. All of the pictures are blobs of black and gray, which renders them essentially useless.
Customer Reviews:
The Millionaires of Genesis.......2007-10-11
I'm not totally through the book but it's a great, teaching book about values and how to be rich, not necessarily monetarily! Forgiveness, tithing, sacrificing, faith and hope are mantras for someone that is searching to be a Millionaire. It's been an asset to my reading collection.
Great insights, sometimes doctrinally questionable.......2007-10-10
As a long-time student of the Old Testament with a particular love for the Book of Genesis, I was fascinated by some of the insights the author offered.
I some cases, however, I feel that the author took liberties in interpretation of the facts. Particularly noted were her interpretations of the names of places. It seemed like she wanted to mold the facts to fit her point of view.
Still, the book was well worth the price and time to read. I'm reading it a second time.
A landmark book on the art of affirmations!.......2000-04-24
This book is a must have for anyone who wants to use affirmations to create positive changes in their everyday life. Ponder explains her ideas clearly and gives plenty of examples of affirmations for everything from finding a job to solving problems and achieving career goals. I highly recommend it. It's awsome and then some!
Customer Reviews:
Dynamic.......2007-08-15
This book really helped me understand why it has taken me so long to obtain the things I want most in life without struggle. I recommend this book to everyone who wants to grow spiritually and desires to be very prosperous.
It's a lifesaver when nothing seems to be going your way.......2002-07-31
I have used this book as a guide to keep me on track towards success for over 20 years. I think it's the best prosperity book ever written. It's especially good for people who are in the stages of life like Joshua's--feeling like they are wandering without direction, wondering when they will succeed and how they will do it. Ponder's advice is practical, comforting and inspiring. She tells you how to stay focused and keep planning to reach your goals, even when it seems like everything in life is resisting you or thwarting you. Then she explains the attitudes and actions that help you overcome the obstacles to achieving your goals. It really is a wonderful book. Also, Ponder is the only prosperity author whose books are all different from one another--each one takes a different perspective and adds depth and scope to your understanding, not just of prosperity, but also your health, yourself and all your relationships.
questionable validity.......2000-10-02
I purchased this book based on a recommendation by an author I respect; James Russell. I'm certain the book will benefit any that believe that positive thinking will make positive things happen, and that thinking happy thoughts will enable you to fly. There is a certain amount of truth to that, but the author claims to base her philosophies on the Bible and then exercises extreme creative license in her interpretation of the scripture. She in fact gives suggestions and direction that are in direct contradiction to it often enough that I felt her validity was compromised, and I won't purchase any of her other books in the "millionaires of the Bible" series.
Customer Reviews:
Biblical principles for prosperity consciousness.......2003-10-08
This book by Catherine Ponder is part of a series on Biblical characters and what they can teach us about prosperity consciousness and positive thinking. Parts of this are not at all the way we Jews think of Moses, but, if you approach it as a sort of modern midrash (commentary), it makes for some interesting reading. Although my guess is that Ponder is a Christian (there's a "Millionaire from Nazareth" in her series), there is no attempt to convert anybody to anything in this book. Rather, she goes step-by-step through a series of basic prosperity principles, which she derives from the story of the Exodus. She also shares a lot of inspiring rags-to-riches anecdotes. The basic message is to trust in God, think positively, and take the "manna" (opportunities) that God gives you. Not exactly original advice, to be sure, but I enjoyed the way that she presented it here.
One complaint: I HATE the all-yellow cover. This was probably meant to evoke "gold" in the minds of Ponder's readers but, for most Jewish people, yellow immediately reminds us of the yellow stars in the Holocaust, as well many other yellow-badge stigmas that Jews were forced to wear in Medieval Europe. If the publisher wants a color that reminds the reader of money, then green would work much better and be far more positive for Jewish readers to have sitting on the coffee table.

Book Description
This beautifully illustrated book invites modern-day pilgrims and people of prayer to think about some of the different ways in which Mary is regularly portrayed in the art of Eastern Christianity. Specifically, it explores three of the most common yet theologically rich images of the Holy Virgin--She Who Points the Way or Hodegetria, The Virgin of Loving Kindness or Eleousa, and The Virgin of the Sign or Oranta--all of which serve as a wonderful springboard for theological and personal reflection.

AN APPRECIATION OF THE VISUAL THEOLOGY OF ICONS.......2006-10-13
Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, has written a series of meditations on three icons, specifically on three forms of icons of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. The first is the Hodegetria, Mary who shows us the way. Mary and Christ in this icon manifest their unique identities in a relationship: she is one who engages us in order to point us to Christ the way that leads to life, he is one who looks with love on humanity. The second icon is the Eleousa, the tender loving Madonna, named for the obvious affection of the Virgin for her child. But Rowan focuses here more on the love with which the God-man embraces his mother and through her the whole human race, passionately leaping over the boundaries that would seem to separate humanity from divinity. The third icon is the Orans, where Mary is the sign of the Church at prayer containing within herself/itself the God-man as the source of that prayer, remarkable in his hiddenness in the Church, in society, and in our own lives. The archbishop concludes with a reflection on the legend of Mary being raised in the temple and working on the sanctuary veil. The veil is the symbol of that which separates God and humanity, a symbol rent in two at the death of Christ. These few words, however, only point in the general direction of Rowan's deeper reflections, and the book deserves rereading and further meditation. Bishop Kallistos Ware writes an appreciative introduction. Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic alike may benefit from and appreciate this work.
Multi-sensory prayer.......2003-05-31
`Ponder These Things: Praying with Icons of the Virgin' is the latest book by Rowan Williams, recently appointment to be Archbishop of Canterbury after a distinguished career as an academic and cleric in the Church of England (Anglican Church). Williams has a great affinity for the wider breadth of Christian experience, drawing influences and inspiration from Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox practices across the centuries. In this book, which is introduced by Bishop Kalistos Ware, a prominent Orthodox theologian, Williams explores ways in which meditation and prayer can be strengthened and enhanced with incorporation of iconographic images.
Protestants particularly have lost the tradition of the use of art work as representative objects for worship. However, the debate over the appropriateness of icons and other imagery is almost as old as Christianity itself. That Jesus could be depicted without violation of the `no graven images' commandment took a long time to be decided, and finally was deemed permissible because of Jesus' human nature. Rare the depiction of God or God the Father as anything more than a cloud, a hand, or some other vague symbol meant to characterise, more than anything else, the mystery involved rather than an actual physical likeness. Michaelangelo's depictions on the Sistine Chapel ceiling are remarkable not simply from their aesthetic quality, but also in that the image of God is very direct and distinctly human in form.
However, icons are a special form of art. They are not simple paintings, however elegant, as Ware points out in his introduction.
`The icon is not simply a work of art on the same level as any other work of art. On the contrary, the icon exists within a specific context; and, if divorced from that context, it ceases to be truly itself. The icon is part of an act of worship; its context is invocation and doxology. The art of the icon is a liturgical art. In the tradition of the Orthodox church, the icon is not merely a piece of decoration or a visual aid. We do more than just look at icons or talk about them; we pray with them.'
Williams draws his work from an event in his own ministry back in Britain.
`These meditations are really about how we are led by faith both to live in the world, fully flesh and blood in it, and at the same time to be aware of the utter strangeness of God that waits in the heart of what is familiar - as if the world were always on the edge of some total revolution, pregnant with a different kind of life, and we were always trying to catch the blinding momentary light of its changing.'
Using three traditional icons and one modern piece, Williams draws us into a method of contemplation and consideration with the icons. The Hodegetria, the Eleousa, and the Orans traditional icons show depictions of the Virgin Mary in very traditional ways; one who is faithful, who is loving, who is sign and a direction of the way we are to go. Traditionally the Virgin Mary is the first human being to have faith in Jesus, faith in his mission and faith in God's direction of that purpose. The Magnificat is a verbal depiction of this kind of faith; icons are the visual depiction. As the scriptural text talks about Mary `pondering these things in heart', so to are we called, when praying with the icons, to exhibit that kind of faith and loving nature, sureness of God's call and direction to us, whatever it may bring.
The modern piece is not what one would consider an icon in the regular sense. Using a modern art scarlet and purple fabric study by Leigh Hurlock, Williams explores a legend of Mary, the story of her weaving the sanctuary veil, a curtain that separated the Holy of Holies from the eyes and physical presence of those who came into the Temple. In a sense, Mary's being provided the substance to weave both the veil and the way to see past the veil to holiness through Jesus.
Purple is the colour of royalty; scarlet is the colour of martyrdom, or the cross. The colours are significant, as are the images, in making the completeness of the experience as an iconographic piece.
This is a small book. It has a mere 75 pages or so of text, and thus could be read fairly quickly. However, to do so would be to deny oneself the richness of the experience. One can glance at an icon, generally a fairly small object, and think one has seen it. However, the true experience of an icon, and the true experience of this book, comes from re-reading, stopping, meditating, and slowly working through each detail. The book is generously illustrated in word and graphic art. Each of the icons is presented in full colour, with details highlighted in larger size at appropriate points in the text.
Through all the meditations, we are looking for God, and hopefully come to realise that God also looks for us.
`We find the God who has taken up residence in the heart of our humanity, who prays when we are not looking, not trying, who is at work when we are silent or helpless, and who can never be pinned down to a here or there in our individual lives or in the Church at large.'
