Dr. Hayes's ability to teach is the other distinctionshe has a knack for explaining things in such a way that you understand and remember, and the learning process is fun. Hands down, the best foaling attendant book.......2007-07-22
As far as I'm concerned, this book is required reading for all foaling attendants. Thank you Dr. Karen Hayes for writing it. The book covers a single topic, and does it better than any of the other foaling guides I've read (and I've read quite a few). Those other foaling guides are on a bookshelf; this is the book that goes in the foaling kit! It has saved our farm from disaster on more than one occasion. Dr. Hayes clearly, calmly and concisely communicates the important facts and techniques the foaling attendant needs to know. The detailed diagrams make all the difference in illuminating exactly what is going on at each stage of parturition. Detailed descriptions of what's normal and what's not, techniques for resolving problems before they become critical, and advice on what to attempt yourself and when to call the vet are invaluable. You will find other fine books about breeding, mare care and foal care, but this is the best book on the actual process of protecting and caring for your mare when it's time to deliver her foal. Dr. Hayes' more general horse care [...].is also highly recommended.
Good information, but..........2007-05-15
I would like to have more information regarding what to do next. The information was good, and the illustrations are helpful, but I needed to buy another book to help with what to do with the foal once it had arrived.
Great Book....Answered lots of questions.......2007-03-26
This book was shipped quickly and just in time....I had about 5 reading days before my first foal was born. I highly recommend this book to all breeders.
The Complete Book Of Foaling.......2007-02-11
Very informative book~! I have been foaling out mares for over 12 years and I learned quite a bit of information that I did not already realize~! An A+ book to have on hand~!
A gift for my Father.......2007-02-08
My Father liked the book very much. Could not stop reading it. He is buying a copy for my brother who actually does the foaling at the horse farm.

Good book for someone looking for a broad range of info.......2007-09-20
A lot of information in this book. It covers just about everything. I was hoping for a little more information on feeding, but overall a good buy. One note: if you are looking for tack and riding info, this book focuses mostly on english riding. There is very little reference to western riding.
Good reference book on horses.......2007-01-12
I bought this book for my daughter who just loves horses. She really enjoys having me read it to her and looking at the pictures. It is a good general reference book for people wanting to learn more about horses.
Excellent Start.......2007-01-03
I found this book to be quite interesting, I bought it as a gift for a friend who is just getting in to horses, and looked it over before giving it. Although most of it is basic, it is not condescending towards the reader, and has many interesting facts. I even learned a few things, and have been a horse person for over 17 years. The photo's chosen to accompany the work are usually helpful, and overall this is an excellent book for someone getting started with horses.
Excellent for new riders.......2005-12-16
This is a great book for first learning about horses, how to care for them, feeding, symptoms of illnesses, and it's simple to read and understand. It gives the basics for people who might want to own a horse for the first time so that you can know what to watch out for and take the best care of your horse. I'd recommend this book for first time horse owners, and for people working with horses for the first time. It's comprehensive and gives you a lot of great info.
1 of the best out of the rest!.......2005-03-31
This horse book was awesome! I will be taking riding lessons this summer and this book helped me get a head start on horse care, like grooming, feed, tack and much, much more! It's a great book for any horse lover even if you don't have or ride a horse. This book makes it a fun, simple way to learn about how to take care of a horse! This is one of my favorite horse care guides out of all of them!

Very informational..........2006-06-24
... in under 100 pages!
I wish it had gotten more in depth on variously commonly kept species, and gotten more in depth about breeding...
This is a great introductory book on how to set up your aquarium for seahorses and gives a decent overview of feeding and nutrition. Supplement this book with more species specific information, which can be found online in the various forums about seahorse keeping.
Alright.......2005-03-04
This book is very small. It gives a brief description of each of the major breeds of seahorses. I was hoping for more specific and detailed information for those of us who want to learn to raise them. You also definately need an additional saltwater aquarium book.
Good info!.......2004-03-04
I've always thought seahorses were unique and would like to learn to care for them and set up my own aquarium. I never realized how many different breeds there are! This book gives a lot of information about how to care for seahorses and equipment you need. It also talks about their different habits and how to get the most out of your pet. It doesn't give a whole lot of information on caring for your salt water acquarium. It seems it's for people who already know the basics, even though it gives you good information on how to care for your seahorses in the saltwater tank. If you don't know a lot about saltwater acquariums (like me) I would suggest buying this book along with Saltwater Acquariums for Dummies. But all in all it is a good book!

The Complete Performance Horse.......2001-12-13
This an excellent book for anyone interested in the science of keeping a performance horse sound and bringing it to peak condition at the time of the events of the season. The details of new information on interpreting physiological signs in your horse will help the analytical, or the more intuitive owner of a polocrosse, event, polo or trail horse.
I normally don't buy books. But having read this one from the library, I found it so useful, I had to own my own copy.

Wonderful ideas.......2007-08-09
My girls (ages 4 and 5) love this book and all the sweet fairy crafts they can make. Our personal favorite is the fairy garden and the minuscule decorations for it. I want to make one for myself!
Beautiful Book.......2007-02-14
I got this, along with How to Host a Flower Fairy Tea Party to use for decorating ideas at my daughters birthday party. The items are very simple to make and most required items that are easily found around the house. And you don't necassarily have to be having a birthday, or an kind of party, to have fun with this book. The fun projects include items suchs as planting and decorating a fairy garden, making you own wings, fairy dust, etc. There are 14 projects in all. The stickers are wonderful and I almost hate to use them. A beautiful book that's worth owning just for the illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
A beautiful find.......2005-11-07
British author, Graham Rice has written 20 books on gardening subjects and is also a weekly columnist for London's "Evening Standard" newspaper. "The Sweet Pea Book" is a joy to read, and the photographs by judywhite (wife of Graham Rice) are among the finest I've seen in any book on horticulture.
In Victorian times, the sweet pea was considered 'the queen of the annuals' but its popularity has since suffered a long decline, which this author means to reverse.
He begins with the migration of the wild sweet pea ('Lathyrus odoratus') into the gardens of seventeenth-century Europe. There is still some debate as to where this migration occurred, but the sweet pea seems to have been first cultivated in Sicily, no matter where it had actually originated.
According to this author, sweet peas are not difficult to grow. Depending on the climate (this book was written primarily for British and North American gardeners), they can be planted out in the spring or fall, or grown under glass. There are now dwarf varieties that lend themselves to container cultivation. He describes each variety or cultivar of modern sweet pea so that you can choose the ones that will do well in your garden--assuming you can find the seed for sale.
(My favorite source is the Thompson & Morgan seed catalogue.)
The author will help you decide whether to plant in spring or fall, whether to chip, sand, or soak your seed and how to keep the plants from getting too leggy (my biggest problem). There are also chapters on how to create new varieties of sweet pea, solving sweet problems, and which flowers mix very well with sweet peas.
This is a delightful book to read even if you are not yet in love with the 'queen of annuals.' For those of us who are already fans, this book is a beautiful find.
A Great Guide to Sweet Peas.......2004-11-25
For anyone wanting to grow sweet peas in their garden or just read up on the different types, this book is the way to go. Graham Rice creates a complete book about the history, types, fragrance and culture of the sweet pea.
The photography is stunning. Rice gathers different varieties of sweet peas and photographs them together making this book full of color and beauty.
Rice has done another great job by bringing these plants to us. It is impossible after reading this book that you won't want to try and grow sweet peas, even if you live in the tropics.
An excellent sweet pea resource!.......2004-09-02
I am a lay gardener (as opposed to an educated horticulturalist) and my favorite smelling flower is the sweet pea. I grew one variety of them for the first time this spring and I am determined to grow more. I was looking for a book to educate me about sweet peas and this was the right book!
This book is full of beautiful, colorful pictures which clearly show a flower's personality much more than a written paragraph could. I think this book is worth looking over just for the pictures alone.
In addition, it is filled with helpful and information in an easy-to-read format. I particularly enjoyed the sections on growing sweet peas from seeds, sweet peas recommended for various regions of the United States (he includes info for those in the UK too), the history of the sweet pea, and the specific catalogue (with many pictures) of individual varieties and cultivars. I was grateful that he included a rating of each sweet pea's fragrance (if he knew it). That helped me find which sweet pea I wanted to get as a strong fragrance is an important feature for me.
Kelly is definitely not a horticultural snob. He values the home gardener and encourages gardeners to dabble in crossing flowers and home breeding. He is very knowledgeable and suggests some potentially productive areas for experimenting. He also illuminates what type of breeding might be too difficult (needing a lab environment to succeed). His well-described `how to' section on breeding has inspired me to try it just for the adventure of it.
I do wish more was said throughout the book about the specific temperatures that different types of sweet peas prefer. Also, I would find it more helpful if specific temperatures were given rather than just saying `hot summer' or `cold winter'. I also think it would be more helpful to only use the USDA zones as opposed to interspersing Sunset zones with the USDA zones.
Other than that, this is a terrific book for home gardeners who just want to learn more about the sweet pea: it's history, how to grow it, and which sweet pea would be best for their Eden.
Book Description
Sweet Pea loves looking after her sister Pea, but she's beginning to think her life is a teensy bit boring. So she decides that it's time for her and Pea to have an adventure. But when disaster strikes and Pea is in real danger, there is nothing that Sweet Pea can do. Will Sweet Pea be able to trust the other Flower Fairies to save the day?

Book Description
In a beautiful garden, Sweet Pea has just been born. As she awakens, she is filled with a sense of wonder and so very many questions..
"At first all she noticed was the light. She wanted to weep it was so bright. Then she noticed the light was warm. Before she knew it her petals had formed. But what was this light that she could feel? And who was she really? What was the deal? But even if she wanted to she couldn't answer such questions. For Sweet Pea didn't know she was Sweet Pea. She was still open to suggestions." As a parent or teacher, how do you discuss the meaning of life and nature of being with a child? In Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee, author Jason Akley uses rhyming verse to explore life's intriguing philosophical concepts, as the wise bumblebee guides Sweet Pea in her quest to discover her purpose in life.
Customer Reviews:
Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee .......2007-09-29
When I picked up Jason Akley's Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee I couldn't help wondering about the ambiguity of the book's target audience, as the language and concepts are certainly not accessible to the 9-12 year old age group, where it has been classified by Amazon.
Furthermore, the characters are not memorable nor do they jump off the page in a way that enters the hearts of young readers-something that is essential in writing a book addressed to children.
Akley may have been on the right track when he employed word play and rhyming as it is obviously exciting to read and even more fun to write. Children delight in poetry and music, however, he forgot that writing a children's book requires minimalism, appropriate word choice, and an understanding as to how to hook and maintain the interest of the young reader.
Moreover, it is crucial, when authoring children's books, to have a full grasp as to what children in this age group like and don't like, what they can seize and what they are likely to rebuff. And if you are going to use poetry, you must not sacrifice the story for the sake of the rhyme. In other words, don't be sparing with the plot and the development of character by throwing in extra words just to make the rhyme work. The key to always bear in mind is that the story must come first; the rhyme secondary. Unfortunately, Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee ignored all of these important ingredients and the result was something way off the mark.
Having said all this, I decided to go one step further and find out what was Akley actually thinking when he wrote Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee. And as it turns out, Akley agreed with me that it is misleading to consider Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee a children's book, for as he stated, "it was his intention to write a children's story for adults, especially parents. I wanted to write something thought-provoking for parents to read to their children." Unfortunately, this was entirely disregarded in a preface that should have been included or on the book's back cover.
The heart of Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee focuses on two characters, the innocent Sweet Pea and the sage Bumblebee. Using these characters, Akley embraces in a most creative way the meaning of life and the role we play in our universe.
From the moment Sweet Pea is born and grows up she begins to question her existence. What is she? What is her life? To what purpose has she been placed on this earth? And just as she ponders these questions, Bumblebee appears in order to teach her to number her days and direct her to a heart of wisdom.
From here various philosophical questions are explored, for as pointed out, Sweet Pea has an open mind, she likes to ask questions and is receptive to suggestions.
Akley skillfully examines various themes that we should penetrate beneath their appearances and try seeking a deeper meaning such as social and environmental orders, fate, knowing thyself, time and space, love, order and chaos, choices we make, the brevity of life, the meaning of death, and other topics that will teach us that we are mere guests in this world and our time is precious.
Generously interspersed among the pages are the expressive beautiful images of Bobbi Switzer that have a lovely charm and playfulness. The book is beautifully designed with emphatic drawings of both Sweet Pea and Bumblebee with their bright colors contrasting against the snowy white pages of the story.
In the end, if we were to consider this an adult book with its sophisticated vocabulary and concepts, I would have to admit that it does have some merit in providing food for thought for possible philosophical discussions with children who are more sophisticated and who would probably be well into their teens.
Norm Goldman, Editor Bookpleasures
A Book That Will Make Children and Adults Think About Life.......2007-06-24
In reading Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee by Jason Akley, I was fascinated by the thought-provoking storyline. The creativity, intelligence, and intent of the author are all obvious as he uses the wisdom of Bumblebee to help Sweet Pea find the answer to "Who am I?" Sweet Pea, like most of us, eagerly seeks to learn the meaning and purpose of life. As she develops and progresses in her growth, her journey leads her to the answers she is seeking. Sweet Pea learns other truths along the way, including the fact that life is short and that one day she will die. Bumblebee tells her to, "Take heed when the gardener comes! For remember we're all here as guests." A parent reading to older children would hopefully exchange meaningful dialog in discussing various passages from the book. The full-color illustrations are wonderful and will certainly appeal to young pre-school children.
Although the purpose of this book is evident, the final product has several weak areas. As previously stated, I enjoyed the philosophical storyline; however, I am an adult. My young granddaughter found the pictures to be captivating, but the dialogue was beyond her understanding. Thus, simply put, the storyline and illustrations don't work together. Both have their good points, but they aren't a fit with one another. Small children love looking at books that are illustrated with bright, colorful pictures. Even picture books with short sentences that children can "practice" reading or have read to them will maintain their interest. Older children might find parts of the book stimulating but would, in my opinion, be embarrassed to check a picture book out of the library.
Using rhyme in children's books is always a good idea; however, when the rhyming words are often meshed together within long paragraphs, the rhyme is difficult to follow. Also, the rhyme has no meter and deprives readers of any pattern of rhythm that brings the sentences to life.
Sweet Pea and the Bumblebee has a sweet ending which both adults and children will love.
Full of energy and personality.......2007-04-13
The illustrations are terrific. Full of energy and personality. But they and the characters of this book seem addressed at young children whereas the subject matter--Who am I? What is my purpose in life?--more appropriate to an older audience beyond cartoon characters in a nursery rhyme garden. Even the high school students I taught in Advanced Placement classes were uncomfortable with Socratic questioning and this book is talk, talk, talk. I applaud the author for tackling philosophic concepts but I think parents will find themselves with fidgety listeners anxious to move on to other books.
There are two things I found moving, however. One is Sweet Pea's awareness of how fleeting life is. Children may not be concerned with old age and death, but it's around them and worthy of open discussion. A second surprise is the last page where the story, Bobbi Switzer's warm illustrations, the author's new daughter and the reader's curiosity merge in a wonderfully celebratory moment. If the book is taken on its own terms, this is the payoff that makes it all worthwhile.
Regular rhyme sets up a pattern of syllables (whether accented or unaccented is another matter) and children's writers who are good at it, Dr. Seuss, for example, let that pattern dominate (even to the extent that the intellectual content may suffer). I was bothered by the rhyme here--mostly predictable, though occasionally clever--because its clumsy rhythms are jarring to the message that "beauty is symmetry." At best, the rhyme influences this author's word choice without imparting much playfulness or music.
Even when the book does work, how would you like to clarify intellectualizations to your kid such as, "All existence was suffering. Suffering was caused by desire. Being was also nothingness. How could it cease to inspire?" I don't understand that, much less know how I'd attempt to explain it to any of my own children under the age of thirty. But, thank you, Jason Akley, there are also gems among the rocks in your garden: "This is the self relating to itself. A strange and mysterious affair. Some define it as a simple inward focus. Others call it prayer." I am happy to have read those lines no matter what they do or do not mean to anyone younger.
A poetic story about discovering yourself and finding your purpose.......2007-03-24
Sweet Pea and The Bumblebee is a well-written, poetic story about a flower finding herself and her life's meaning. As children's literature, Sweet Pea offers rhyming lessons that can be used throughout a person's lifetime. Sweet Pea and The Bumblebee is a must have for parents who enjoy reading to their children.
