Book Description
Do Animals Have Feelings?
According to
Kristin von Kreisler, the answer is an undeniable yes. Here, she shares dozens of absorbing, true stories of animals who've risked their lives to keep the human they love out of danger. You'll read of incredibly heroic acts—from the dog who swallows a firecracker to protect a toddler, to the horse who runs through traffic to save an injured woman. You'll come away from this profoundly moving book with a deeper appreciation for the indispensable role animals play in our daily lives.
"Remember some of the feelings you had as a child for the animals to whom you were closest . . . That is what this book is all about."
—Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, from the foreword
"An inspiring collection of animal loyalty, love, and bravery. No one can deny the emotional impact of this anecdotal book."
—Publishers Weekly
"An extraordinary combination of incredible research and deep feeling."
—Cleveland Amory, author of Ranch of Dreams and The Cat Who Came for Christmas
"Through dozens of inspiring true stories, Kristin von Kreisler makes a strong case for a 'controversial premise'—that animals demonstrate genuine acts of compassion toward others every day. This book will remove the 'controversial' from the premise!"
— Paul G. Irwin, president of The Humane Society of the United States
"Ms. von Kreisler is fearless, intriguing, and herself compassionate. Highly recommended."
— Roger A. Caras, president of the ASPCA

The Compassion of Animals.......2005-05-03
I recommend this book highly but be prepared to cry when you read some of the stories. In one story, a dog gets in front of a rattlesnake to save a little baby and gives up his own life doing so.
The author does a splendid job of explaning how animals have compassion for other animals and human beings.
Wonderful Collection of Animal Good Deeds.......2001-05-14
If you are not animal lover, you will be after reading this book. It is a gem!
For people who love animals.......2001-03-10
These stories are warm and inspiring. My 12 year old daughter has read it a few times now, cover to cover. Great for anyone to read who loves and appreciates animals. This book really grabbed me.

changing pardigms.......2001-03-07
I recently finished this remarkable book. I must say I listened to it (from a tape from the Blind Center) while working on a portrait of a dog for a friend. I have always believed in the compassion of animals, having several 'Animal Angels' in my own life. Kristin's stories of true compassion verify what every animal owner & lover knows in their own heart. One of the saddest comments, after asking prominent Scientists, were that animals performed the compassionate acts out of self interest. After all of the stories, as well as my own experiences, I can say thankfully ,that we are living in a time of changing thoughts. I am more than happy to recommend this book to all of my friends, and lovers of animals of all kinds.
Book Description
It has long been said that a dog is a person's best friend, and how true that is. To many, though, the canine-human relationship goes far deeper than friendship. It is the ultimate reflection of a mutual and unconditional level of commitment and of a dog's ability to become one with its human. It is a relationship of love, care, and loyalty that penetrates the soul, softens the heart, and generates an inseparable emotional bond.
The Compassion of Dogs is a fabulous collection of true and moving stories that illustrate how dogs display their wide range of emotions familiar to any pet owner—compassion, courage, intuition, and loyalty. Inside, you'll meet canine caregivers, therapists, and heroes, as well as medics, September 11 saviors, and countless other very special dog friends, including:
·Louise, a Bearded Collie who became separated from her owners near the World Trade Center on September 11 only to find herself riding one of the ferries, comforting countless strangers
·A therapy dog named Lucy who became best friends with a young girl with leukemia and stayed by her side during her final weeks
·Andre, the little dog who continued to visit a favorite spot on the lawn where he had spent time with his owner before her death
·And many more
These are fascinating and heartwarming real-life accounts of the power of canine-human relationships, the depth of which are certain to resonate within the heart of any dog lover. You'll relive the emotions and thoughtfulness of your own best friends and discover dogs' awesome ability to earn the respect, love, and admiration of all who share their lives with these amazing animals.

Wow.......2003-01-25
This was such a compelling book. It really touched my heart. The people/dog relationships impact the way you think about dogs and being a dog owner. Dogs are so loving and forgiving...they don't care that we aren't perfect. This book is easy to pick up and hard to put down. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Sorry I waited so long to read this book.......2003-01-20
I got this book for Christmas and should have read it right away, it is wonderful. I loved every story, especially the one about Louise, the rescue dog, who rescued others. I have three dogs but I wish Louise was my fourth.
Compassion of Dogs Compassionately told.......2003-01-20
My son received this book for Chirstmas because he is a big dog lover. We all read it and loved it. We were impressed by the intelligence of the writing and the research that was done for each dog. Few books are as revealing as this.
Inspirational book.......2002-12-22
As a contributor to The Compassion of Dogs, I had the opportunity to read the entire book. I was deeply touched by each of these stories, which were unique in their own way. As an owner of dogs, I was also able to personally understand and identify with aspects of the humane/canine bonds that were so beautifully described. I encourage anyone who loves dogs, to buy this book for themselves and as a gift for others. Each individual story is inspirational, touching, and worthy of remembering.
The true spirit of dogs.......2002-12-20

Book Description
As indoor kitchen design books do, The New Outdoor Kitchen covers initial design and planning and, in subsequent chapters, covers "stove" options (grills, smokers, wood-fired ovens); the rest of the kitchen (outdoor refrigerators, sinks, cabinets, and countertops); the entertaining and eating areas (including a discussion of outdoor heaters, social fire-fireplaces, firepits, and chimineas--and bug control to increase your season of enjoyment); and, finally, the grace notes of the outdoor kitchen--lighting and sound systems, plantings, and water features. Ten portfolio kitchens will be laced between the chapters, and the book will conclude with an extensive source list. The kitchens pictured in the book will run the size, price, ambition, and creativity gamut, from kitchens sited on decks and patios to a small urban backyard set up to elaborate built-in, freestanding outdoor environments.

All-new Companion to America's public Television Cooking Series .......2007-01-18
This a really a great cook book and I have tried may recipes in it and they were all great, what is really great you can also watch how it is done when it is aired on TV.
Cook's Illustrated Test Kitchen.......2006-02-25
Even though I subscribe and have many Cook's Illustrated books this was worth the purchase. Yes, some of the info is repeated from other pubs but often tweaked a little and some new stuff also. A very good read, too!
Avid Cook.......2005-10-27
I ordered the first volume of the series and was very pleased with my purchase. This is a fine addition to my cookbook collection.
Excellent book but could use a better index.......2005-09-06
This book is OUTSTANDING. America's Test Kitchen is like the Consumer Report's of recipes and cooking products. I enjoy learning WHY certain products and techniques work. They try and try until they get a particular recipe to be the best it can be. Then they share what they learned. The one disappointing aspect of this book is the Table of Contents and indexes. For example each "chapter" contains several recipes, but you have to go to the chapter in order to see what all the recipes are within that chapter. But the book is so very excellent that I can forgive this flaw.
But use your own judgment.......2005-06-07
I absolutely love ATK and buy all of their books. The techniques they present are top notch and as close to bulletproof as you can get. I find the spicing a little mild for my tastes so I usually amp that up a bit. Tasting results are the aggregated opinion of several people so some of the more unusual flavors you might get a kick out of may be rounded out in the math.

Owl's and the Web of Life.......2007-09-16
A beautifully illustrated non-fiction story of the owl's life as we learn about his ways of feeding, where he lives, finding a mate, and exists during the different seasons of the year. I used this as a part of an integrated science lesson. The idea for this lesson is from "Picture Perfect Science" which is an excellent resource using books such as this one to teach elementary science.
Barn Owl (Animal Lives)
Great first book about owls.......2005-09-08
The barn owl is certainly a unique species, and is an excellent subject for a book meant to introduce young children to the world of owls, and birds in general. The illustrations are excellent, and the text for the most part is easy to read. The occasional advanced word is encountered, but this is hardly a problem. Overall, an excellent book.
A picturebook with factual information........2000-09-22
Animal Lives: The Barn Owl is a picturebook with factual data, a genre I am generally pleased with. Given the picturebook format, I felt that some of the vocabulary choices would be very difficult for younger or struggling readers, i.e. superefficient sense of hearing, perilous flight. That said, the information about barn owls is well presented and researched, the illustrations are accurate and well-done, and the book includes resources and information about conservation. The author follows one barn owl pair as they raise their first brood of young-from courtship to leaving the nest. A nice insight into the lives of the owls.

Product Description
Poet and painter Prartho Sereno opens the door to a magical world hidden inside our most ordinary one, the kitchen. Here you will meet a cast of characters both whimsical and wise. The Whisk is a whirling dervish; the Slotted Spoon understands the sorcery of tears. The Spatula knows the alchemy of turning work to play. And then there are others who mirror our struggles and coax out compassion: The Dinner Fork is an incurable dreamer; the Soup Spoon can't help but give everything away. The Pickle Fork is heartbroken over the Iced Tea Spoon's cold shoulder.
Twenty-six watercolor paintings to inspire and delight. Twenty-six poems to help us slow down and listen deep. As accessible as the utensils it celebrates, Causing a Stir will fold humor and wonder back into your days.

"Chato, a low-riding cat with six stripes, was slinking toward a sparrow when he heard the scrape of tiny feet coming from the yard next door." You get the idea. Chato is a sly, mustachioed "cool cat" from an East Los Angeles barrio. The tiny feet? Those belong to the new mice (ratoncitos) next door--"five mice the color of gray river rock," to be precise. Chato promptly invites them over for dinner, in exactly the sense you might fear.
"That Chato cat seems muy simpatico, very nice, I'm sure," says Papi mouse. The mice (being cheese lovers) spend the day making quesadillas for the fiesta, while Chato and his best friend Novio Boy busily prepare side dishes for a meal con ratoncitos. Instead of the anticipated gruesome ending, a surprise twist is in the works.
Gary Soto, author of Too Many Tamales, is brilliantly witty, and Chato's Kitchen--an ALA Notable Book and a Parents' Choice Award Winner--is truly marvilloso. Susan Guevera's comical, deliciously detailed, richly colored depictions of the creatures are priceless as well, earning her the 1996 Pura Belpre Award for Illustration. A culinary concoction that no youngster (or adult) will be able to resist. (Ages 4 to 8)
Customer Reviews:
Chato's Kitchen really cooks some fun.......2007-10-11
Chato's Kitchen is a wonderful children's story. Is fun and entretaining. I'm an adult and I just love the drawings.
I think every parent and school teacher should share this story with the children.
Pretty Kitties, Pretty Good Book.......2005-11-24
Chato is a character in more than one Soto book. He is an urban cat who looks Hispanic and, frankly, a little sleazy (his cat friends likewise have mustaches and wear gold chains and wife beaters). When a family of ratoncitos (mice) moves into the neighborhood, Chato hatches a scheme to invite them to dinner. They will be dinner, of course.
The mouse family reluctantly accepts the invitation, thrilling Chato and his friend, who hasten to begin preparing side dishes to go with the mice. But when the mice arrive on the back of their dog friend, the cats are frightened into toeing the line for the rest of the evening.
This Pura Belpre award winner includes what appear to be acrylic illustrations featuring thick, black outlines and lots of purple morning glories. I suspect there is more in the illustrations than meets the unpracticed eye. For instance, a group of birds seen several times are celebrating a wedding. There is a religious-looking shrine set up in Chato's house. And when the cats first encounter the dog their skeletons are visible underneath their skin. One of the cats looks like Edvard Munch's The Scream.
There are also a glossary and a menu of Spanish terms. Anyone who frequents Mexican restaurants would be familiar with most of the menu terms.
I believe this book would be a favorite choice for read-aloud because there is a good deal of silly action you could act out.
Sleek and sophisticated.......2003-12-22
A remarkably original book. The illustrations are well wrought, and the story contains some of the most evocative I've heard in a picture book. Describing Novio Boy's collar, the book says it was, "a leather one with real gems that sparkled at night when cars passed in the street". The cats themselves are a twinge odd. Drawn with cat bodies but human eyes, teeth, and moustaches, they are just disturbing enough to keep the pictures interesting. It's a colorful book as well, full of beautiful swirling scenes and bold shapes. The use of Spanish throughout the text is seamless as well, never striking the reader as out of place or jarring. This book would read well with other stories that incorporate more than one language in their text. Or, kids could read it with other picture books that take place in Hispanic communities. Or, it could be paired with other stories where hungry preying animals fail to get a meal. A beautiful book to read aloud to groups.
Another Gary Soto hit!!!.......2001-02-05
Any controversy surrounding this book is misplaced. It is a well-written story that entices children to want to to read it and other books. Rarely is there such a fine blending between the words of the author and the pictures of the illustrator. My students love this book and read it again and again.
One of the books I read the most!.......2000-09-21
The book put me in a good mood. It is in English, but there are some Spanish words that are hard to read sometimes. I really liked the part when the cat was sneaking up behind the bird. The cat then heard the five mice walking, and he started swinging his tail to the rhythm of their walking. The cat goes up to the gate and ends up scaring the mice. That was only one of the funny scenes. The book has one more funny part at the end that I don't want to give away. Anybody who reads this book will love it!
