Everything About Chinchillas.......2006-08-25
"The Chinchilla Handbook" makes a great companion book to Dr. Vanderlip's standard, "The Guinea Pig Handbook," by the same publisher. Profusely illustrated by Michele Earle-Bridges to enhance the well-organized, straightforward text, this book covers everything the novice (and veterinarian) should know about chinchilla history, suitability as pets, anatomy, housing, feeding, behavior, health care and reproduction. This comprehensive book concludes with information about color inheritance and the fascinating world of showing chinchillas competitively. A helpful list of chinchilla affinity groups and recommended publications precede the detailed book index.
Among the many user-friendly features of the book are the well-organized tables and summary boxes which condense the essential facts about these charming little creatures into easy-to-find bites. The health management aspects of the book point the reader to the most common problems likely to be encountered with chinchillas, and practical advice about avoiding them and deciding when to seek the help of you local chinchilla veterinarian.
A great, but compact, book for chinchilla lovers and veterinary staff alike, and a welcome new addition to the Barron's series of pet owner handbooks. It goes alphabetically on my shelf next to Dr. Vanderlip's manual's on "Degus" and "Dwarf Hamsters."

Unreal.......2007-06-06
I cannot praise this book highly enough. While I have most of the other G.I. Joe books, this is without a doubt my favorite. The pictures and level of care and detail are so perfect that they are the next best thing to owning the toys themselves. It's also a great reference tool for collecting and posing your own finds. I take it out and look at it constantly.
Most of us will never have the time or money to put together a collection like this, but we can enjoy the fruits of the author's work via this amazing book. If you love G.I. Joe, even just a little, by all means BUY this book. For those of us who dreamed and longed for the pictures we saw in the old Sears "Wish book" catalogs, here is the dream!
Great photos!.......2002-10-11
This book has a lot of great photos, mostly in color. The information is pretty good, but there are some areas that seem to have gaps in the narrative. I also would have liked more in-depth information relating to Hasbro instead of mostly the kind of information that you can get from a list. The book tells you when everything was released, what year, who did what, etc. But it lacks any human warmth, and there are really no warm stories of the original creators sitting together and working on GI Joe. Sadly, most of the GI Joe books totally ignore the human factor, aside from giving credit to the names of the people who designed, invented, patented, painted, funded, etc. The book is great for photos, and lots of interesting information. Sadly, it is not a warm, fuzzy book about a children's toy!
Terrific G. I. Joe photos.......2002-03-12
Plenty of useful and interesting information here, but the real appeal is the generous collection of photographs of vintage Joes and equipment in their natural element : on bivouac, at sea, ready to roll. These are the kind of set-ups that used to make me salivate as a kid and it's fun to revisit via this book.
My husband enjoyed it..........2001-05-17
I bought this book as a gift for my husband, who recently began collecting GI Joes. He was very pleased with the book and you can frequently find him browsing it, especially after he receives his catalogs/magazines.
Brought back a level of real childhood joy........2001-03-17
I bought this book to help me prepare to sell off a number of GI Joe items on eBay. My plan was to sell the book too, after my collection was sold. Well, things change; this book is a keeper. It really recaptured the fun I had had of collecting and playing with GI Joe. The photographs are of the kinds of scenes I'd have loved to create for myself (if only my collection had been this good). The text reads as if you were listening to guy with a great sense of humor warm up to his favorite topic. Thanks Mr. Depriest for a job really well done.

The delicate complexity of embroidered florals cascading down a lapel, over a pillow, or around a soft hat is here distilled into clear, easily understood steps. The book's foundation supplies, techniques, and a detailed step-by-step guide to about 20 stitches leads us smoothly through the preliminaries and on to 25 projects ranging from accessories to wearables to home decor to special occasions. Each project occupies at least a double-page spread and comes with a complete list of supplies and full instructions. The stitches themselves truly aren't very complicated, but the accumulation of individual elements as the embroidery progresses yields some very lovely results.

If envy is an issue with which you struggle daily, you may want to avoid Great Kitchens, a lavishly illustrated walk-through of 26 fabulous kitchens in the homes of some of America's best chefs. This is a Taunton Press publication--the same people who bring us Fine Woodworking, Fine Homebuilding, and Wooden Boat, among others--so rest assured the production values are high enough to raise the stakes for everyone else in the business.
The one thing all of these kitchens have in common is that they didn't start out this way. There are kitchens put into Victorian houses, 1920s farm houses, swim schools (no kidding: Mary Sue Milliken of Border Grill in Los Angeles, and her architect husband, Josh Schweitzer, bought a small swim school and put home and kitchen where locker rooms and showers could once be found), old bars, upscale apartments, ancient stone houses. These are kitchens, then, that have been thought about by people who work with food, and know what they want at home.
Built-in wood-burning ovens and hearths seem to be a big deal. So, too, are custom wok stoves. Seattle chef Tom Douglas put his enormous prep island on industrial casters. He also put his herbs and spices into cans that attach to bar magnets on what would be wasted wall space. He chose the domestic version of an industrial stove because it is better insulated and doesn't heat up the kitchen. And like several chefs in the book, he swears by his commercial Hobart dishwasher with its 90-second cycle.
Great Kitchens is a multifunction book. You can leave it open on a coffee table as a piece of publishing art. You can use it to launch your daydreams. But most of all, you can use it to learn from the mistakes and successes of others, and gain insight from a lot of very practical information.
Most over-the-top built-in appliance? Terrance Brennan's bread-warming drawer. But in this book, it makes perfect sense. --Schuyler Ingle
Customer Reviews:
Great Kitchens: At Home With America's Top Chefs.......2007-04-05
The color photographs in Great Kitchens are beautiful, with great detail. The book maps out each kitchen as well, and gives the reader remarkable ideas for first-rate kitchen design, fixtures, appliances, storage , cabinets, ect. from each Chefs personal home kitchen.
I only would have been a bit more inspired to see Kitchens of Chefs Bobby Flay, Or Giada DeLaurentiis,Emeril Lagasse, some TV personalities as well. Although, Mary Sue Milliken and Rick Bayless are in this book and show really creative kitchens.
Style Meets Functionality.......2007-04-04
Design a kitchen that not only looks good, but contributes to your own personal style of cooking.
What do you really want in your new kitchen?.......2007-02-15
After reading this book, I realized that part of me wanted a kitchen that would impress others. That aim partly conflicted with my personal aesthetic preferences and the way I like to live and cook. What inspired me the most in this book was seeing kitchens for cooks I revere. The diversity of kitchens is refreshing because many of the design magazines these days are focused on particular "looks." The pictures in the book are very good. Paul Bertolli's kitchen is interesting in that it doesn't have upper cabinets. I never considered not having upper cabinets, but it made the space feel much brighter and larger. The author also presents a floor plan for each kitchen and I found this really helpful for understanding kitchen dynamics.
My favorite kitchen book.......2005-06-03
I'm a coffee-book junkie if they're about house design. Most new books I order each month are tired re-treads and get a little stir of interest and then are donated to the local library. I won't part with this one. I took it to read on vacation, and it was gold for 800 miles of a long car trip. My husband was entertained by excerpts I read to him and fab photos I flashed him on boring stretches of desert highway. He's not into kitchen design (probably because he's done so many real projects) and even he found it interesting. The photos are top rate. The bottom line is that every kitchen is personal, and this book brings that message home better than any other kitchen book I've seen.
Great book about great kitchens!.......2005-03-29
Architect and author Colleen Mahoney hit a grand slam with this book! We just finished remodeling our own kitchen and this book was indispensible. The only thing missing was Colleen's expertise. We highly recommend visiting her website before you begin your project.

Everything and the Kitchen Sink: Remodel Your Kitchen without Losing Your Mind

Amazon.com
Designing or remodeling a kitchen should be a practical venture, but also a fun one--a concept that also applies to Suzanne Ardley's The Kitchen Planner book. This interactive workbook will stimulate both creative and workable ideas about designing your new kitchen.
Ardley begins by advising readers to create a kitchen based on individual needs. What is the layout of the kitchen you're working with: One- or two-walled galley, L-shaped, U-shaped, or an island? Is the kitchen used by a single person, a couple, or a family? By someone with special accessibility needs? Ardley discusses the benefits and limitations of each floor plan for each type of person.
She also explains the logistics of laying out your kitchen properly, taking into account its multiple functions as a food-preparation and cooking area, serving and eating area, food- and dish-storage area, and--as most party hosts know--a social area. Use the graph paper and the stickers at the back of the book to arrange and rearrange your layout, using Ardley's tips as a guide. For example, she suggests that the sink (the most-used part of a kitchen) be easily accessible from the food preparation areas, and that the dishwasher be located as close to the sink as possible so dishes can be easily rinsed off then stacked in the dishwasher.
Besides planning a layout, you'll also need to decide on the look you'd like for your kitchen. A flipbook section of The Kitchen Planner lets you experiment with different styles (traditional or modern), color schemes, and floor coverings, while color photographs throughout should also spur your imagination.
It's obvious that Ardley has put much thought into the most efficient and practical layouts and use of space for kitchens of every type--even offering advice on kitchen equipment, surfaces, and finishes. She suggests several quick-fix options that may solve a kitchen problem without your having to resort to an entire remodel. The result is an eminently usable planner. --Kris Law

It also comes with reusable stickers and layout girds in the front and back of the book.It is jam packed with information to help you solve all of your design dilemmas. A
Beautiful but lacking Practical Substance.......2001-07-27
I was seduced by the lovely photographs, fun peel-and-stick arrangements, and cute mix-and-match cut outs. But when I really tried to use the book to plan a practical workspace that will serve family and guests for years, I found advice and guidelines skimpy and vague. I wanted more solid information, including specific attributes of a good work triangle, and important space allowances for walkways, cabinets and counters. I also wanted more attention given to relative costs of materials.
Yet, it was very enjoyable to poor over the ideas, styles and photographs.
kitchen structure.......2001-07-02
an overall good resource for planning your first kitchen helps put together some good ideas in an orderly way using interesting tactics to let your eye explore the color swatches
Fun idea book.......2001-03-14
The Kitchen Planner gives you a lot of ideas for your kitchen. What is practical, what would be best for your life style. It also has a fun way to see what your style is. It kind of reminds me of a children's book where the pages are split and you can come up with different combinations for the head, body, and feet of an animal. The same idea in this book for the flooring; cabinets; & sink style, wall color & wall style. This book is a fun idea book.
