An interesting personal account of Hawaii family traditions that differ from other native traditions already well known or that have been mentioned in earlier works. This is a great book written by an extraordinary man from a wonderfully diverse culture.

Customer Reviews:
Koko.......2006-12-24
ISBN 0451162145 - Tough book to review, but a pretty quick (not easy, just quick!) read, Koko is worth the time! I often feel like the number of typos that get through is a good indicator of how highly (or lowly) the book is seen by the publisher and Koko has a mere 6 in 595 pages - but two mistakes really bothered me. Early in the book, Conor's shirt has yellow letters and two pages later, the letters are orange; late in the book, Koko leaves a note which reads, in part, "I have no name" and is quoted two pages later as "I have no home". Petty? Sure - but I think most typos are due to poor proofreading and this type of thing is more likely the author's fault. I don't like simple continuity errors from an author like Straub, because I'm trusting him to write a complex story and if he can't keep simple things straight...
That said, Straub has done a great job with the big picture. In 1982, as Vietnam vets from all over the country flock to the new memorial wall in Washington, the killings begin - men are found dead, their heads mutilated, cards with "Koko" written on them in their mouths. Other than a small group of men who served together, no one has yet discovered that the killings are connected. Tina Pumo, Conor Linklater, Michael Poole and their rather aptly named former Lt. Harry Beevers gather in Washington for the memorial's opening and Harry proposes that they find the killer, because they all know his identity. Despite Harry's disturbing stance that they can make some money from this, the men agree to join him. Pumo remains in New York while the others return to Vietnam and set out to find Tim Underhill, a former member of their platoon and a crazed author who chose not to come home when the war ended.
The backstory is filled in, slowly, with flashbacks to the moment and place of Koko's creation - a cave in a small village in Vietnam, Ia Thuc. The atrocities of that day haunt all the men but none more than Koko, who has set out in his own way to right the wrongs they committed. This puts Linklater, Poole, Beevers and Pumo at the top of his hit list and they have to find him before he finds them.
One reviewer commented that he wanted to know what happened in the cave. The book does state what happened, but in tiny stages. The worst of it doesn't come out until very nearly the end of the book, as Harry's and Koko's paths begin to merge. How each of them perceives what happened is, ultimately, the reason for Koko's existence, so revealing it from the beginning would have detracted from the horror of it, making it seem not so much the sort of thing that would haunt men for over a decade. I, for one, also appreciated the way it was done because, really, the graphic details would have made the book too pornographic and far less worth reading.
In the end, the thing that makes this book a worthwhile read is the characters. Almost no one is who they seemed to be in the beginning, but the change in your perception isn't some abrupt thing forced on you by bad writing. It happens slowly, as one layer after another reveals clearly what you feel like you should have seen all along. Can you guess early on who the killer is? Sure, you CAN - there's even a giveaway on the back cover, where it mentions that one of the men searching for Koko is an writer - but don't bother. It isn't really about who - it's about why. And if the ending seems incomplete, and it does, it makes sense, too. Not just from the "setting it up for another book" standpoint, either. The man who became Koko died in Ia Thuc, and there is no fair and just punishment for him that he hasn't already suffered. Still, the only thing that keeps me from giving this book 5 stars is the sense that the open-ended ending was more to lead into the next book than anything else.
Among the things that stuck with me that had nothing to do with the story itself, Beevers (in 1982 in the story and 1988 when it was written) thinks of New York as "ground zero", no caps, no foretelling, just an interesting note. The mention of D.B. Cooper was a nice touch, as are the frequent mentions of other authors and books, including Blue Rose (ISBN 0887330053, 0146001079, and ASIN B000LUT5VO) copyright 1985 by Straub himself but attributed to Tim Underhill in the book. Superbly written, and worth all 595 pages!
One of Straub's best.......2006-07-24
I read this back in '93 in one day. It was gruesome, terrifying, brutal, and it felt very very real. Straub is one of those writers who does serious research for his novels. While I am not a Vietnam veteran, my father is, and I have done much reading on the subject myself, and Straub describes So. East Asian in amazing detail. But most of all, his characters are real, and you care about what happens to them. It's not one of his supernatural works, but you get the feeling that a supernatural evil is afoot. Koko is easily as good as Silence of the Lambs, or even a little better.
A rare and brilliant gem .......2006-04-11
You need to have some literary aptitude to enjoy this novel--as is the case with the whole 'Blue Rose' collection. Fans of CSI style pulp from the grocery store bargain shelf will not appreciate being drug over to the deep-end without their pink, inflatable water-wings.
This isn't Dean Koontz.
Too Long, Too Slow, Didn't Care When All Was Revealed.......2005-09-24
I like most of Straub's early work but this book didn't flip my switch. It's about a group of buddies who fought in Vietnam together a decade and a half before the time in which the book is set. Someone is stalking and murdering the men one by one, and the survivors of the squad--soldiers who in a moment of violent madness which affects each differently undertook and got away with a massacre of civilians in a Vietnamese village--gather at the Wall in Washington DC in order to figure out who is preying on them, and how they can stay alive.
Koko:None Better.......2005-07-04
Koko is an excellent adventure mystery. The author's prose is clean-cut without giving the appearance of having suffered undue compaction. It's very scarry and begs multiple, repeat readings.I don't remember anything better by Peter Straub.

Fall in love with Koko!.......2007-07-23
Did that gorilla just ask to be driven to the soda machine?! What a wonderful way to introduce animals as more than just oddities in a zoo! This book, and it's companions, makes one think seriously about our fellow creatures and how little we really know about their feelings and capabilities. It's an interesting, heartwarming, and funny acount of how Dr. Patterson taught an infant gorilla to communicate in sign language. Read it to your children before their next zoo visit.

Heartfelt personalities in these dogs.......2005-12-23
What a wonderful story, a great mystery tale with lots of dog dialog. The characteristics and traits of each breed are captured in the behavior of the dogs. Some dogs feel the wild impulses from their wolf ancestors, others want only to please their humans. Should these dogs be free to run and play (and solve mysteries) or must they be leashed? Read the book to learn how the residents of Shoretown resolve this hot button issue.

Easy, Informative, Specific.......2007-05-16
This was a great book for a begining Colorado gardener like myself. The majority of the book is organized by month so you can work on what needs to be done at a specific time of year. The rest has very helpful charts and how-to guides for all the basic gardening techniques referred to in the book. Also plenty of room for notes to personalize. I really loved it.
great book for the new or experienced gardener.......2007-05-16
We were delighted with the thorough directions and monthly prompting.
The spiral binding, design drawing and colorful pictuures are a real asset.
The space for journaling will be a help in planning next year.
Well-organized and helpful beginner's guide.......2002-02-19
"Month-to-Month Gardening: Colorado" is an attractive, well-organized and helpful beginner gardening guide to Colorado. It is one of the few Colorado books that recognize gardening in the Colorado mountains is vastly different from Colorado high plains gardening. This is not an exhaustive book although the variation and the brief format of the tips makes for easy absorption. Included are helpful lists of recommended plants including lists of xeriscape plants, mountain plants, and others. Local landscapers and gardeners have contributed garden designs that help tweak the imagination. If you are starting out in Colorado gardening, this easy to use book will get you pointed in the right direction.
brief, excellent.......2000-07-15
This book is a quick and easy read -- great for summertime when you want to actually be gardening, not reading! The tips are wonderful, as are the "best" and "worst" plant lists. Many people *will* appreciate the space left for writing down your own ideas or information -- for the cost of the book I personally would rather have more tips in the book itself and jot down my gardening log in a cheap notebook.
This book is so useful. It actually makes gardening easy!.......1999-09-20
Month-To-Month Gardening Colorado is the best book I've read yet on successful gardening in Colorado. The books offers hundreds of tips on things you can be doing to create a beautiful garden. I especially love the journal provided throughout the book. By journaling facts about my own garden, the book has become my own personal gardening guide. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in successful Colorado gardening.
