This is an owner's manual suitable for anyone that loves their schipperkes as much as I do. It is concise and easy to read. Gives the reader much information on the care, feeding, housing, love, medical well-being, and play for the owner of these dogs. Don't pass this one up--buy it now along with the schipperkes 2007 calendar.

A Perfect Representation!.......2004-03-13

A beautiful book with stunning photographs and information. I have many copies. And about time too!I love my little Schip, Jobey, and this book helped me understand his history, how to train him, and most importantly, how to care for him. Every word in this book about these quirky little animals is true, from stubborn to smart! I love this book!

I love Schipperkees!.......2002-01-10

Being one of few dog breed books on the wonderful Schipperkee, I think that this one is the best! Much better that the "Darwin" version. The pictures are classic Schipperkee, the cover picture is identical to my "Schippee"! I go along with much of what is written as far as training, feeding and temperment of this breed. I love the price and the paperback availability. It about time!

Fastastic Voyage.......2007-03-06

While the stories captivated me and Muilenberg's pacing kept me turning page after page to find out what happens next, the passages that gripped me the most were his descriptions of the natural beauty of the Caribbean. His astonishment at the colors and awesomeness and the astounding beauty of the natural world resonated with my own experience, although I could not have described it as poetically as he has. I read this book in St. John and so could observe directly some of the sights he describes; reading his stories deepened my own pleasure in being in that special part of the world. A superbly enjoyable read.

tougher critic.......2007-02-02

I found Peter's writing wonderful, and enjoyed his sailing stories. My reason for three stars is that more than half the stories center around his dog, saving his dog, his dog's bark, etc. etc.

Funny, Inspiring, Thrillseeker's Dream.......2006-11-29

WOW! I only wished I had boarded Breath on my recent visit to St. John. I am speechless. Your stories, your life, your finishing of your mast, even your skipperkee. Smelling the Lignum Vitae and sensing it smelling of wood but responding/sounding like stone. I am now another devoted and enlisted friend. Remarkable, how you have come to tell the story, brilliant story-teller, by the way. Loved your writing style. Funny, inspiring, authentic and thrilling all in one.

The stories..I loved each and everyone of these. Of course the story of Denton Bridge and survival and your dog Santos had to be the most amazing of all. Also of Dorothy's commitment as a partner, spouse, mother, teacher who allowed you to live out your dream and to keep you grounded and supported, albeit, not always to her liking.

This is real life on the seas. Thanks for sharing and caring.

Magical prose reflecting on excellent adventures.......2006-10-13

The first time I picked up Peter's excellent work I flipped open to the middle and began reading about guerillas in Venezuelan mountains, and thought to myself, "This isn't something I want to read about." I laid it back down. Shame on me! I almost missed a real treat. Recently, I was given a copy as a going away present before moving back stateside from the Virgin Islands, and from the time I opened it on the ferry ride from St. Thomas to St. John I scarcely laid it down, save to sleep. I found myself totally mesmerized by Peter's magically descriptive prose that indelibly imprinted on my mind's eye scenes of the excellent adventures he shares here. His unique perspectives on life aboard his homebuilt sailing vessel, Breath, sailing around the Caribbean and beyond,from the miraculous recovery of his boat dog, Santos, after losing him at sea, to raising his sons on a boat had me alternately laughing out loud and then in tears. The lively manner with which he shares his stories, as if talking to a close friend, captivated me, and his anecdotes re-conjured for me the essence of the sea faring life that I have so loved. Thank you, Peter, for sharing your sojurn with us all.

Sail away! Sail away! Sail away!.......2006-07-15

I thoroughly enjoyed ADRIFT ON A SEA OF BLUE LIGHT. Peter Muilenburg's writing style, and the very words themselves drew me into the boat and onto the sea with Peter and his family. Sometimes I would read the chapters to my husband, prefaced with "Listen to how eloquently he words this!" or "Listen to this story!". My husband jumped on board, reading the book himself, enjoying it equally. We had our own Book Club!

We have ourselves enjoyed a few visits to St John (camping at Cinnamon Bay, Maho, and Concordia) and were therefore able to picture some of the scenes about which Peter wrote.

For those of us land locked souls, the book takes us to sea, and alas, I was sad when the last page was read and our voyage with Peter and his family came to an end.

Very little of schipperke specific information, and some of what is there is in error, and lots of common sense dog handling. This book seems to be written off a template.Also a huge amount of product placements. Not worth the read, nor the purchase. Rather get Melanie Coronetz "Schipperkes".

good basic information for the breed.......2005-10-17

I was surprised to see Robert Pollet, a French specialist in BSDs and Schipperkes, writing a book for the UK/English language pet/show market. I met him over 20 years ago at the Paris Specialty for the Belgian breeds (all 4 BSD varieties and the Schipperke as well). He has a good solid grounding in the breed and its behaviour and the book addresses many of the basic backgrounds and problems in the breed. He was astute enough to utilize photographs of UK bred dogs for the main, so I would think that this book would do well with the pet market here in the UK, as it has been many years since a book was written about the breed. The standard laid out in the book is the UK Kennel Club's Breed standard for the breed.

The most definitive book about the Schipperke available........1997-11-12

The Complete Schipperke is an excellent book about the breed, containing many photographs of notable Schipperkes and fanciers, and information about Kennels which have made significant contributions to the breed. I dispute the previous review; the Officers and Board of Directors of the Schipperke Club of America exercised diligent oversight of all the contents of the book, including the chapter describing the Ideal Schipperke. As in Conformation judging, some fanciers disagree, to a greater or lesser extent, about some of the information presented. Such disagreement does not make the information incorrect. Material for the book was solicited from a wide cross section of fanciers, including members of the Schipperke Club of America, and other fanciers of the breed. And since the emphasis is on the Schipperke in America, and the book was authored by the Schipperke Club of America, the content is predominantly focused on Schipperkes and kennels in America. After the final draft was approved in its entirety, errors made by editors and layout personnel at the publisher resulted in some photographs being mis-placed, and the entire half of the frontispiece photograph, containing the Schipperke, being deleted. There were also some minor errors in transcription of some pedigrees. However, viewed in its entirety, this is an outstanding resource book for those wanting accurate information about the Schipperke in America. I am a member of the Schipperke Club of America, and currently serve as President.

Some erroneous information--revisional text is questionable.......1997-09-16

The Complete Schipperke is the most eclectic text so far on the Schipperke Breed. However, some content that is a matter of public record is incorrect. This is confusing and misleading when dealing with bloodlines and pedigrees. The portion of the book that covers the Ideal Schipperke, was written by an individual/s, without Schipperke Club of America's oversight. Several portions of this new "Ideal" text make drastic changes to qualities that are "unique" to the Breed. In earlier editions, this particular text, written by the breed's human "cornerstones", has never come into question. Material for the book was limited to the Schipperke Club of America Membership, in the main, therefore it is substantially misleading by non-disclosure of this fact, within the Fancy. I am a member of the "SCA"--then and now--incorrect pedigrees referenced at least one of my dogs. Coverage of my kennel history is erroneous. Others were also disturbed or disenchanted with the final product

I've bought that book 'cause I'm planning to transform a small corner of my garden into a nice patio. But this book is about balconies, sky gardens, decks, pools, back yards, seaside retreats, etc...Nothing about patios!!! If you're looking for ideas for your patio, this probably isn't a good book for you.

Best Inspiring Book for Outdoor Design.......2007-05-25

A definite must have. This is by far one of the best inspiring books for outdoor designs. If you are looking for something modern, minimalist, different from ordinary, don't look any further and buy this book. I designed my own terrace thanks to the great ideas and inspiration by Jamie Durie.

This is the best of Durie's books and is an excellent companion for the California garden designer. The plans are helpful for understanding the layout of a garden, but the photos are what really make the book. The light modern style, clever detailing, and CA compatible plants give me new ideas every time I open it.

Must-read for garden design.......2004-07-12

I must admit that I wasn't expecting much from Jamie Durie, knowing him mainly for his home renovation shows in Australia.
However, after much searching through countless books on garden design in bookstores, I found his books to be far and away the best I've seen.
His designs are very modern and innovative and the book gives a lot of insight into the design and construction process. Backgrounds and reasoning on particular choices made and goes into detail on subjects such as lighting, plants and materials.
I own quite a few garden design books and I would definately rate this the best I've seen and just about every design in his books I would rate amongst the best I've seen.

A more elegant modern.......2003-08-30

This book is an excellent sourse of inspiration for the garden designer who is tired of traditional garden design. Jamie Durie explores new materials and plant selections in a way that is comfortable and exciting. A must read for those of us who are tired of English garden design!
