Book Description
Honeybear and Skippy stumble into the high-intensity world of American Kennel Club dog obedience competition as the most clueless of neophytes. They share a life-defining adventure in pursuit of the "Holy Grail" of dog sports. Their odyssey is an emotional roller coaster -- a succession of cliffhangers resulting from injuries, training crises, performance curve balls and the mine field called the competition ring. Along the way there are underlying conflicts: about training philosophies and methods, with members of the lowlife fringe of the obedience community and, indeed, internal conflicts.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring.......2007-05-07
I read this book twice. Then when my dog chewed it up I bought another copy. Lots of great information and an inspiring story. Well worth the money.
Obedience Novice.......2007-04-26
I enjoyed this book and found the authors trials and tribulations similar to my own. It was easy to read and had several helpful tips as well. Although it's more of a novel, it can help us novice folks learn some of the ins and outs of dog shows. I doubt if someone who is already a trainer, or who is show wise would find this book helpful. But..for those of us just beginning it's great!
Helpful but not insightful.......2007-04-10
I was looking for something that would give me a more practical approach to obdience training and what to expect. The book is helpful, but the story approach wasn't what I was looking for in an obedience guide. I would have preferred more details being in the obedience ring rather than the tale of the author and his dog through their preparation for obedience competition.
Remembering to Breathe is wonderful.......2007-02-20
I am a new obedience competitor with my rescue dog. I loved this book! It really tells you the nuts and bolts of training and competing. So much of what he says is exactly my experience so far (only 5 months). I especially liked his description of how his addiction to the sport resembled a user's first rush with cocaine.Dog competition really is addicting and this book will tell you all you wanted to know without being dull and academic about it.
Wonderful, couldn't put it down.......2006-05-03
Satisfies on all scores: a wealth of detail on obedience trial competitions, as a a dog story and as the saga of a winning relationship between dog and owner. Well worth the price. I'll be rereading it.

Interweaving scripture, paraphrase and garden imagery, Karla Dornacher writes and illustrates a beautiful botanical book of devotional thoughts that explore God's handiwork as the Master Gardener in the heart-gardens of His people. An ideal gift book for women who enjoy gardening or for any woman seeking to "grow, blossom and bear much fruit" in her walk with God.

Down a Garden Path.......2000-09-01
I received this book for my Birthday and plan on buying several for gifts also. It leads you through a little garden, all the time giving you religious inspiration. It lifts you up and lets you know that God is always there especially in the garden.
Dornacher's Down a Garden Path.......2000-05-31
Over and over again, I have enjoyed the soul-inspiring scripture wrapped up in a unique way with wonderful illustrations in Down a Garden Path. I enjoyed the "seed packets" and little envelopes scattered within the book, that contain little verses in an original way. I bought this book for a gift....and then had to get one to keep for myself!
Down a Garden Path", bur Karla Dornacher.......2000-05-03
What a wonderful book, beautiful pictures, with the Master Gardner in mind...after receiving this book, as a birthday gift from my daughter, I had to search out more of Karla Dornacher books.
Encouragement to the soul.......2000-05-01
This beautiful book was given to me as a gift, and will be one of the most treasured keepsakes I've received. The wonderful illustrations give life to the simple, yet deeply meaningful, encouragements needed as we walk the paths of life.
SPECIAL THANKS TO kARLA DORNACHER.......2000-02-20
The minute the book "Love in Every Room " by Karla Dornacher was in my hands,I knew God had given me a very special gift. When I proceeded to order a copy for a dear friend, I was delighted to learn of another of her books "Down a Garden Path". I fell in love with this one, too.
I am so pleased that Karla recognized, accepted and used God's gift to her. She has made this a more charming, colorful world. I find I am using these books for birthday and get-well gifts plus always keeping one of eachto soothe me when I'm tired or stressed and to guide me when I need God's wisdom and peace.

Book Description
Down the Garden Path has stood the test of time as one of the world's best-loved and most-quoted gardening books. Ostensibly an account of the creation of a garden in Huntingdonshire in the 1930s, it is really about the underlying emotions and obsessions for which gardening is just a cover story. The secret of this book's success---and its timelessness---is that it does not seek to impress the reader with a wealth of expert knowledge or advice. Beverley Nichols proudly declares his status as a newcomer to gardening: "The best gardening books should be written by those who still have to search their brains for the honeysuckle's languid Latin name..." As unforgettable as the plants in the garden is the cast of visitors and neighbors who invariably turn up at inopportune moments. For every angelic Miss Hazlitt there is an insufferable Miss Wilkins waiting in the wings. For every thought-provoking Professor, there is an intrusive Miss M, whose chief offense may be that she is a 'damnably efficient' gardener. From a disaster building a rock garden, to further adventures with greenhouses, woodland gardens, not to mention cats and treacle, Nichols has left us a true gardening classic.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful pre-war English Charm.......2007-02-18
A thoroughly charming book with a lovely pre-war atmosphere. It is about gardening yes, less about the technical than about the wonders. That weird, ratty vine you chopped down to get rid of, which bloomed like the Dickens two months later, the neighbor who knows everything, has a perfect garden, and seems to stop by just when a mystery fungus has claimed your best plants during the night. It's that kind of gardening book, about the joy of success and the deceit of garden catalogues.
Beverly Nichols bought his house for the garden he thought was there. He knew nothing about gardening. He learned through trial and error, and the man was enthusiastic and thought big. He wanted flowers in his garden in winter, and searched until he found them. He wanted to grow mushrooms. He wanted a wood in his field. You get the idea.
The writing is what makes this book. His description of the gardening books he found: "They were mostly in wrappers which showed women in obsolete hats standing with guilty expressions by the side of immense hollyhocks. They had terrible titles too..." Or perhaps about gardeners themselves, "People think that the gardener is a placid man, who chews a perpetual cud... a man whose mind moves slowly... Such ideas are very wide of the mark. A gardener is a wild and higly-strung creature, whose mind trembles like the aspen and is warped by sudden frosts and scarred by strange winds..."
Well worth a winter read!
very pleasant.......2005-09-05
This is a lovely book. It gives a lot of garden advice, just between the lines.
I will read this over and over.
delightful reading.......2000-07-13
A wonderful narrative about this man's first garden in England in 1932 and his various experiences with it and the people around him. A rare combination of eloquent writing and down to earth humor left me chuckling throughout the book. Wonderful language and very entertaining. Besides the charming style, there is real gardening information to satisfy the plant-person. I got it at the library, and am here to buy it for my mother, who will love the tongue in cheek, English humor. Would recommend it as a feel-good book to curl up with, with your cup of tea!
bautifully written,so very english.......2000-03-28
Nothing much happens in Beverly Nichols book.No sex, no crimes, just the miracle of growth,of life in a cottage garden.A witty, charming book that makes you look at your own garden with different eyes.

How to Murder the Man of Your Dreams
ASIN: 0140266232 |
Book Description
One of the most beloved names in the cozy mystery market, Dorothy Cannell has been credited with originating the genre. In this classic display of her talents she tells the story of Tessa Fields, a young orphan determined to uncover her true origins. With the help of the Misses Tramwells, two endearing elderly ladies, and the reluctant assistance of her secret love, Harry Harkness, Tessa hits upon a scheme that finds her feigning amnesia and recovering in the Tramwells's ancestral home. But it isn't long before Tessa smells a rat. Why does the butler creep around in his socks, and what was he doing in her closet? How does the coquettish maid know all about Tessa--and even more about Harry? And why are these little old ladies so fiendishly good at cards? It soon becomes apparent that the game being played out in this proper English town isn't poker or whist--it's murder. And with the deck stacked against her, Tessa must unmask the perpetrator before she's dealt a fatal hand.
Customer Reviews:
Yuck!.......2003-07-31
I love her books, but this was boring, hard to follow or "get into." You may love it, but I didn't even finish reading the book.
when she's good --.......2001-10-15
she's very good indeed, but sadly, this is not the best example of that! It's still readable, however, at least in my opinion.
A standard device in fiction is that of the baby left on a doorstep, who, upon reaching adulthood, or something reasonably approaching that state, sets out to find the birth parents.
The author hangs a 'Pastoral Mystery" (the sub-title of the book) on this premise. Set in rural modern-day England at a country house, Cloisters, (once a monastery, of course), the past is nearly as important as the present, with generations of the same family and/or townspeople laying the groundwork for the secrecy surrounding the parentage of the heroine, Tessa Fields.
Left on the doorstep of a vicarage, Tessa is told just such an engaging story throughout her life. Her adoptive 'Mum' dies when Tessa is just 11, and she is cared for thereafter by her 'Dad', the vicar, and his housekeeper, Fergy. A short stint in London as a career girl includes time spent at The Heritage, an antique shop run by the large and shambling Angus Hunt. All is for naught, however, in the face of the increasing pressure Tessa puts on herself to discover her real parentage. A closet romantic, she makes frequent references to such unrelated Regency-period staples as highwaymen and Lord Byron.
Cannell is a master (mistress?) at inventing eccentric characters; the Tramwell sisters, Primrose and Hyacinth, loom large in Tessa's story, as does Butler (the not-quite reformed burglar who stays on as the butler); Chantal, the beautiful and clairvoyant young gypsy woman, who is in love with Tessa's own love, Harry, and who supports herself as cook at Cloisters while earning her master's degree; Harry himself, (the missing unidentified heir); Bertie, another adopted youngster who has an imaginary friend, Fred, who nearly gets them all killed, and so on. In other words, your typical English house-party guest list.
At times, Tessa is a bit much, and you may wish for the end of the book to please hurry up and get to you, but overall, this is still an engaging and witty book. It could have used better editing; if misspellings get on your nerves, you'll find yourself becoming more aggravated than most readers. Nevertheless, all does end reasonably well, for Tessa does discover her birth mum and her own real love, almost simultaneously. They also discover a secret treasure which guarantees the continuance--for years to come--of Cloisters, but with the roof finally mended.
Disappointing.......2000-08-15
I'm not sure what happened here. I actually wanted to rate this two stars and a half, but that's not possible, so I've decided to be generous. For the characters in this book were likable enough but the plot and story was slow and awkward, and frankly, I became very bored halfway through the book and had to put it down for a few days before I could finish it. The strange thing is that when I read Ms. Cannell's next book, a second Ellie Haskell mystery, it was so good, exactly the quality I had been expecting from Down The Garden Path. I think Ms. Cannell's Ellie Haskell books are her best and there her talent shows. But as for the others...quite frankly, God Save the Queen was even worse than this one in it's way.
Down the Garden Path is Right!.......2000-03-21
I found this book almost impossible to read:the characters were either weird for weird's sake or just silly. The "heroine" was forever speculating on people's characters without a clue as to what makes people do what they do; she kept doing stupid things to further the (nearly non-existent) plot. I read and rather enjoyed The Thin Woman, but this book was not only a terrible mystery; it was a terrible book. For really excellent British mysteries read anything by Elizabeth George or Martha Grimes.
Very entertaining and funny........1999-11-01
I've read this book a couple of times because I enjoy the story and the way it's written. I also like the Misses Tramwell. I know they have been in Ellie Haskel books and also in "God Save the Queen". I wish Dorothy Cannell would bring back the characters from "Down The Garden Path" in one book, and also the characters from "God Save The Queen" in another. They were interesting and very likeable.

Book Description
Essence of Blue is the first in a series of beautifully illustrated gift books that focus on essential elements in interior decoration. Alongside stunning photos, the lively text offers insights into the role played by the color blue in one's life and home. For instance, readers will find explanations for why a bedroom is the ideal place to use blue: "Blue is a color that recedes, conjuring up a sense of space and peacefulness, so is the ideal choice for a relaxing bedroom." Images are grouped thematically, with sections on blue in nature, denim and ticking, blue in the kitchen and bedroom. Practical suggestions for incorporating these elements into decorating schemes assure that their "essence" shines through.
Customer Reviews:
Soothing Book.......2000-11-01
I have loved the color blue as long as I remember. I want to decorate with blue, but I don't want it to be overpowering or boring.
The photographs in this book show many ways to use blue and combinations of blue and other colors that are beautiful and soothing. The text explains why many people prefer this color.
I highly recommend this book.

Nothing But Blue Skies!.......2004-01-26
For those of you, like me, who think the color blue is one of the best things God ever did for us will find this book fascinating. Ms. Recio divides the book into an introduction, four chapters-- Feeling Blue, Seeing Blue, Creating Blue, Discovering Blue and a conclusion, Into the Blue. The book contains literally hundreds of facts about the color blue, some of them well-known and others quite obscure. Some of her conclusions are well-founded, others are speculative; and that's okay. Blue is symbolic of virtue, quality, heaven, the divine, purity-- the Virgin's cloak is often a beautiful shade of blue. For Hebrews, blue is the color of the glory of God. The flag of Israel is blue and white. The flag of the U. S. contains the color blue. Blue is associated with law and order-- as in police uniforms-- serenity, calmness (doctors' offices are often in shades of blue.) As seen from space the earth is blue. The ocean is blue. Many people do their bedrooms in blue or blue and white, a restful combination of colors. Ms. Recio discusses the color blue in art-- the Impressionists' obsession with blue-- in music-- the blues, bluegrass, "Rhapsody in Blue", "Mood Indigo," et cetera-- peacocks, butterflies, morning glories. The significance of blue in fashion, blue jeans, a navy blue suit for confidence and sobriety. I can testify that when I wear a navy pinstripe suit that the Red Sea parts for me. People are drawn to me like moths to a flame-- a blue one of course.
In addition to lots of facts and suggestions about blue-- my favorite is that the abstract painter Wassily Kandinsky, an accomplished cellist, considered the cello to be dark blue-- there are many beautiful blue photographs here illustrating the author's thesis.
Informative.......1999-07-14
I really enjoyed this book. As a photographer I am always looking at the world of color, and what the colors can represent and how they have been used throughout history. I feel like this book is informative without really giving an opinion, but leaving that up to the reader.
