Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2007-02-20
I truly enjoyed this book and it has all the information one needs to take care of a rat!
The best care book for rat owners!.......2007-01-04
This is the best and most accurate rattie care guide I've read. Ms Ducommun is know as the Rat Lady and has been one of the best rat health experts for many many years.
I have 5 rats myself and even though I'm experienced in their care I found this book interesting to read. I think every rat enthusiast should have this on their book shelf :-)
A very informative book.......2007-01-01
We landed ourselves a pet rat a little over a year ago. Neither of us really knew much about rats, but we muddled through researching here and there on the internet and asking questions at the pet shop, etc. Our rat seemed healthy and happy, but I always worried that we might be missing something.
I received this book for Christmas, and by the end of Christmas morning I had read 2/3 of it! It is such an interesting and informative read. It put my mind at ease on several issues, taught me quite a bit and it is great to know that I have it as a reference if anything should ever happen to our precious Ratatouille! Like another reviewer already said, it might not go into quite enough detail for people who already know a lot about rats, but for your everyday rat owner, I think it is more than sufficient.
Oh, and, after reading in this book that you should never keep a solitary rat, unless you can spend several hours a day with it (we manage a couple of hours a day), we are off to get a house mate for her, in the new year. Of course, now we have this book, we know how to successfully introduce the new rat in the correct and proper way ;o)
Complete Care: Rats .......2005-08-10
I have a pet rat, and this book was helpful. I especially liked the chapters telling about games you can play with your rat and showing them. It was also very helpful on food, cages, and health. I would recommend it to people of all ages.
A Good Book for the Basics of Care.......2005-07-08
This book is a nice book if you are looking for the basics of rat care at a glance. This book gives an overview of what a rat is like. Plus, since the author is the famed "Rat Lady," you know that you are getting a great book with accurate information.
Of course, the book doesn't go very in-depth with everything. It lists off common illnesses, a few tricks, and the basics. If that is what you're looking for in a rat book, then this is the book for you!
Customer Reviews:
Great for information on illness, but not so hot on care........2004-01-29
I love the section on rabbit diseases. Its very easy to look something up and it does cover a wide-range of diseases that most rabbit books don't. However, many of the opinions on rabbit care that the author has I do not agree with.
From the very beginning the author states that young bucks are easier to keep and train than older animals and those of the female gender. After going through the teenage stages of several rabbits I swore off adopting a rabbit under the age of two. Older rabbits, in my experience, are more predictable and less destuctive indoor companions. As for gender issues, I haven't noticed a difference in ease of training between altered males and females.
Later on she advises small rabbits as good pets for children. The hefty weights tend to be more laid back for kids. Sure, the kids have trouble picking them up, but kids shoulding be picking up rabbits anyways. Rabbits don't like it.
As far as diet goes, a pet owner is advised to look elsewhere for information such as "The House Rabbit Handbook", or their website rabbit.org. The same can be said about her advice on house rabbits.
There's some interesting information in this book, but I only recommend it to someone who is already quite familiar with the proper care of rabbits. As a beginner's book there is just too much bad information.
From a hard core house rabbit fan.......2003-04-21
I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning about their rabbits in depth. The book covers history, all aspects of rabbit care - pets (outdoor & indoor), show, breeding, meat & fur - types of housing, feed, anatomy, diseases, treatments and an extensive list of rabbit breeds. The chapters are kept short and to the point in an easy to read format.

A Great Rabbit Book.......2004-08-12
A lot of good information and some good photos. I have yet to find one definitive house rabbit guide, but this covers a lot of the basics: history, deciding if rabbit is right pet, adopting a rabbit, setting up living space and health. There is also a great section on rabbit behavior and behavior problems.
Worth buying before or after bringing a rabbit into your home!
Customer Reviews:
If you only own one hamster care book..........2007-05-20
This book is very detailed and up to date regarding hamster care ranging from basic care and health concerns to breeding and showing hamsters. Because the book is detailed it may not be reader friendly for younger children who own hamsters than other hamster starter care books on the market featuring simpler formats. It has some very nice color illustration sections outlining different varieties of hamsters. I think it should definitely be in a hamster owners library for reference.
An excellent resource for beginning and experienced hamster owners alike.......2005-10-26
I've had a number of hamsters over the past several years, and have looked through a good many hamster books to find various information about caring for them. Unfortunately, a lot of the ones at the pet stores are often out of date and can even include misinformation. However, Hamsterlopaedia is neither of those things, and though it took a bit to find it, I'm glad I did. This is an amazingly detailed book that not only covers the basics, like how to house and feed your hamsters, but it even goes into hamster biology and the most common health problems to watch out for. It also provides information on breeding hamsters, including caring for a mother and her new babies, and not only includes information on Syrian hamsters but dwarf hamsters as well. Most of the book is text, but there are a good number of photo pages as well, especially to illustrate the various colors and types of hamsters. Whether you've just gotten your first hamster or you've been caring for them for years, this book has plenty to offer. I would highly recommend this book and I really appreciate the authors' work in writing it.

Customer Reviews:
A Worthwhile Read!.......2007-05-30
Excellent illustrations (pictures and charts) to help define a kitchen garden. Could be more practical for small home gardens.
kitchen garden.......2007-05-24
This book is lovely and inspirational and full of good ideas. I do not have time for such an elaborate garden but I have planted mine using many of their ideas an it is beautiful and functional.
This Book is Complete Fantasyland.......2006-06-22
For a couple minutes you may marvel at this book, and then you'll quickly realize it's full of repetition of a theme -- same style, same border plants, sameness throughout. Worse than that, however, is the fact that if you even bothered to lay one of these out it would look just right for only a week or so before you wanted to pick something but decided against it so as not to throw off the symmetry, or worse one part of your composition died away and made the rest useless. Gardening is hard enough work without resorting to this. I have a pretty kitchen garden thanks to borders of allyssum and gravel paths, but it's not as insane as this where I would constantly be dismayed it was dying or wanted to pick something (heaven forbid). There are many books on pretty kitchen gardens. This is a book for people who want to achieve something surreal that will ultimately make them miserable very shortly thereafter. Stop by my house. I'll give you this book for free. Worthless. Sameness. Boring. Useless.
Function Forsaken by Fiddly Form?.......2006-05-16
The Gertleys' book concentrates on the design styles for a kitchen garden, based on the parterre de broderie, which achieved its ultimate glory at Versailles. They use a series of simple geometric shapes to achieve their parterre gardens as their designs become increasingly complex. They derive design inspiration from Celtic knots, Japanese crests, and quilt patterns.
Their designs are inspirational to view however, their gardens are very demanding of their creators. The designs might raise or fall on the placement of a radish and are not especially functional. I am a cook first, gardener second, and artist last when it comes to potagers.
Their methodology requires far more nitty-gritty planning than suits my preferred approach. It often appears at counter purposes to a kitchen garden that is meant to supply the table since it is so meticulously groomed and cared for and harvested with such additional planning in order not to destroy the patterns made by the vegetables.
The book's approach is much like Charlie Tuna asking; "Do you want tunas with good taste? Or, do you want tuna dat tastes good?"
I admire the design talent and illustrations if not the philosophy.
Great Book!.......2006-03-03
This book is wonderful! I wanted to make our garden area look more landscaped and put together rather than having the plants look sloppy. This book gives wonderful pictures and ideas for making it work. It also gives descriptions of types of plants to use as well as edible flowers. It works for the mini garden as well as the large garden areas. I recommend this book to all vegetable gardeners who want more than a tomato plant here or there!

Customer Reviews:
Not in the same league as the other titles in the H&G series.......2003-01-29
(i see i'm the first to write a review of this book :) ).
while this book is not in the same league as the other titles in the H&G series, it does have merits.
i was pretty confused and initially +very+ disappointed that the style of kitchens and dining rooms in this book was not largely in the same vein as those depicted in the "Bedrooms & Bathrooms" and "Livingrooms" books -- sumptuous, eclectic, a bit on the traditional side but not stuffy.
the rooms depicted in "Kitchens & Diningrooms" were (disappointingly, to me) more of the modern, minimal, spare types.
after i got over my disappointment that this book was different in the styles it promoted vs. the other tomes i have in the series, i did appreciate K&Ds on its own merits.
as always, there are a lot of interesting ideas that are transferable to smaller budgets and scales, even if its obvious the rooms depicted are scandalously beyond my budget.
i +was+ (and still am) very disappointed that there was a decided dearth of dining rooms represented. i made an allowance for the "kitchen" portion and modernity, but i thought that the "diningroom" section would have more variety.
well, it did have some variety -- but there just weren't very many of them! (at least to satisfy me). i wish the editors would breakout a new book on just diningrooms, because i feel i'm still waiting for that volume from them, however much i appreciated the sampling in this book.
i kept this book, and am not sorry. it just was a bit of a surprise at first, as it's a bit of a jump from others in the series.

a practical resource and inspiration.......2001-03-27
I appreciated this book not only for its inspirational value, but also for the practical ideas in the form of lists, suggestions, and many ideas as well as beautiful pictures to illustrate and motivate. I have put many of these ideas into practice in my small lot, and the effect has been tremendous. Combined with practical knowledge and common sense, this book brings out the artist in all of us.
Coffee Table Book.......2000-02-11
This book is ideal for the coffee table but, as an informative book, it doesn't make the cut. The photographs are beautiful but the writing style lacks the punch necessary for how-to books and the reading is made more difficult by the injection of examples of different "kitchen gardens" in the midst of the chapters. Also, the gardens discussed are not such as could be duplicated by the average gardener, who does not have several acres of land to turn into a landscaped masterpiece.

Book Description
Food Mania celebrates our frenzy for food with the most extraordinary visual record of culinary matters ever published.
Man's fascination with food has inspired a huge body of literature, from poetry to cookbooks, but it has also yielded engravings, drawings, paintings, advertisements, and colorful labels, all for an eager audience of gourmands, cooks, and would-be chefs.
Food Mania covers it all: the delights of growing, preparing, and serving -- from pantry to dining room, kitchen gardens to tea plantations, bakers to brewers. The origins of the food we eat are explored in marvelous detail, first with botanical depictions of rare fruits and detailed cartoons of the grocery store. Next are the still-lifes of the larder, showing every kind of foodstuff and ingredient of a busy kitchen. Finally, there is the table itself, with details of plates, towering centerpieces, utensils, and menu cards, as well as scenes of feasting that convey our never-ending proclivity to rejoice with food.

482 illustrations....It is a work of art........2003-07-11
Once you slip this hot pink, fat little book out of it's book sleeve, you will be impressed and amazed by the beautiful victorian-flavored drawings inside of it.
I got it because of the artwork contained within, and one would be happily engaged in this book once they knew of the visual treats they were about to encounter.
This book has limited dialogue pertaining to the history of food -- finding it - preparing it - serving it and eating it. Which I feel ADDs to the book on the whole.
There are not many books on this planet that offer so much optical enjoyment for so little money.
Check the price; you will be tempted to want one for your own book collection. It inspires a person to take out the old charcols and dabble in an artful composition or two.
I love this book, and so will you!
