Product Description
These fascinating birds are green as they are found in their native Australian environment, but selective breeding in captivity has resulted in a stunning variety of colors. Here is virtually everything a prospective parakeet owner needs to know about keeping one or more of these birds. Titles in Barron's popular Pet Handbooks series instruct pet owners on health care, proper feeding and housing, and other facts important to owners and their pets. All books in this series have high quality, full-color photos, instructive line drawings, and run to an average of approximately 140 pages or more. Paperback / 160 Pages / 6 1/2 x 7 7/8 / 2000
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-05-13
book is very informant with plenty of pictures. Had information in it that other parakeet books I've read did not have in them. Very helpful. Great book to have if you have parakeets or thinking of getting one.
Great book.......2006-08-19
I'm new to parakeets and have been relying on the expertise of others in books. This book is one of the better ones. It's written by experienced bird handlers who know of what they write. The information here is easy to access and written in a clear, understandable syle.
Covers the basics.............2005-01-02
As far as I am concerned, when it comes to books on pet birds, Barron's books are the best. BUDGERIGARS by Immanuel Birmelin (translated by Matthew Vriends) falls into this category, although it is somewhat condensed compared with a few other books on the market. However, Birmelin covers all the important issues, such as caging, food, and other aspects of maintenance that you need to know to get started taking care of a pet Budgie.
My favorite section is about "playing" with your pet Budgie. Budgies are intelligent little parrots and you can have hours of fun if you choose to by providing them with sources of amusement. Birmelin lists `The 10 Most Popular Games' you can play with your Budgie and "How-To: Fun and Games." Did you know you could play card games with Budgies?
Although we never want to think about the possibility, sometimes a Budgie gets sick. Birmelin includes a section "If Your Bird Gets Sick" that gives you some ideas of what you can do besides get upset. In this section he includes a `Checklist - Preventing Illness' which is helpful especially if this is your first bird. Keeping his cage clean is a good thing to do, and spending time with him every day will keep him happy. A happy Budgie is a healthy Budgie.
Excellent for Beginner Bird Owners.......2002-12-22
I recently acquired 2 gregarious parakeets (Budgies, more specifically) and have found this book to be a wonderful resource regarding the proper care of my new friends. It also offers a wealth of information about behavior (why they do some of the crazy things they do) and health propblems to be on the lookout for.
I feel like a much better prepared bird owner having read this book, it was a great place to start.
The Parakeet Handbook.......2000-10-31
Very informative book. I decided to buy 2 birds after reading it! The author is extremely thorough in guiding the reader through all aspects of owning and caring for parakeets. She does, however, tend to be very open with her opinion on having a minimum of 2 birds, but not pushy about it either. I compared this book with several others from the library, and this is the most concise and easy to follow.
Book Description
This fascinating species of parakeet is thoroughly profiled, including detailed information on cages, aviaries, plus feeding and maintaining a healthy and happy bird. Over 45 brilliant full-color photos reveal the different varieties of this attractive bird.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-02-17
I recently got my first Red Rump parakeet. Ordered this book to get good basic information on care and such. Felt it was a good basis all around book for all Australian parakeets. Went into many types of the Australian keets.
Good book but ordered for someone else.......2006-08-22
The only reason I gave this book 3 stars is because I simply looked through it briefly. I ordered it for a friend of mine who has a Pale-headed Rosella. I assume she finds it helpful. Sorry I couldn't be more specific!
Field guide for broad-tailed parakeets.... .......2005-01-09
THE NEW AUSTRALIAN PARAKEET HANDBOOK by Matthew Vriends, is a relatively technical volume covering "everything about purchase, housing, care, nutrition, behavior, breeding and disease' and a special chapter on `understanding the Australian Parakeet'
Ever wonder where that blue or yellow budgie you own fits into the larger scheme of the Parakeet world? This book won't tell you. NAPH describes the whereabouts of selected parakeets native to Australia, not `Melopsittacus undulatus. You won't find `Budgies' in the index either, and the `Grass Parakeet is not the Budgie according to this book.
Vriends book covers the so-called `broad tailed parakeets' ornamental birds you might encounter on a field trip and want to breed yourself, could you catch a pair. Vriends Includes descriptions of Nymphicus hollandicus known to most of us as the`Cockatiel' and he also writes about lesser known species such as Rosellas, Ring-necks and Red-rumped Parakeets, as well as the Yellow-vented Blue Bonnet parakeet which must be a sight to see in the wild. Vriends book is really a breeding and "birding" book comparable to those published by the Smithsonian on captive breeding programs for `threatened' birds held in captivity and/or finding them in their threatened habitats, and would make a good companion on your next trip through Australia to search the bush and back roads. In fact, one great shot shows an old guy with camper in the background, feeding a wild flock of Australian King Parrots with bright red heads (could this be the author?). The book includes many photos with poor captions and plenty of black and white drawings which I find offputting when trying to determine which species might be lurking on the fence post yonder.
The New Australian Parakeet Handbook.......2002-08-07
This was one of the very few books that covered to any degree the rare species of bird that I recently purchased.
I have also seen this title in a highly respected local bird farm library.
Highly recommended for not extensive information on each breed, but short summaries on about every breed of Australian parakeet you need to know about.
Excellent resource book.......2001-04-30
Dr. Vriends is one of the formost authorities on birds, and this book is an excellent example of his knowledge in unusual species. It covers all Australian parakeets that are usually kept, and is currently the most comprehensive guide to these interesting beauties. Highly recommend this book for all who own or are considering owning Australian broad and long tailed parakeets.
Customer Reviews:
Some information is outdated.......2006-01-19
I enjoyed reading this book, and I love all the pictures, but some important information is outdated. For example, the book suggests over and over that you give your parakeet gravel to help with digestion, but this is a big no-no. A more recent book would explain the dangers of this practice, and inform the reader to steer clear of gravel and grit, as well as sandpaper perches (which can hurt and injure your bird's poor little feet).
Much of the information is very helpful, and again, the pictures are wonderful, but I would suggest a more current book to anyone who is looking for accurate information on the feeding and care of your parakeet. If I had noticed the publishing date of this book (English version was first published in 1986) I would have passed on it.
question on parakeet behavior.......2000-03-17
Please let me know about parakeets eating the paper on the bottom of the cage. "Wicky" has become finiky with his food and started to eat paper. Is this harmfil? What should I do?
The New Parakeet Handbook.......2000-02-05
This book is an exallent source of information on the raising, caring or breedind of budgies. It includes diagnosis and treatment charts for illnesses and injuries. This book also includes what and what not to feed the budgie, home grown foods and housing requirments. It even has a section for breeding, taming and the behavior of Parakeets. In my opion this book is a MUST for ALL parakeet owners. Wheither the first time novice, or a serious breeder. Use it as a guide to care for your bird or as a referance guide for diagnosing and treatment of any budgie problems. The book has lots of photos, drawings, and charts. I love this book and use it all the time for my budgie Joe. This is one awsome budgie book!
Great book for the first time owner!.......1999-11-06
This book is excellent for children,or those of us just getting our first "keet".The information is concise and easily understood. The book is set up to cover a touch of just about everything from where did they originate to handfeeding babies. The color photos are exquisite! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a budgie. It would also make a nice gift accompaniment if someone would like to give someone a budgie as a gift!
Jam Packed w/info.......1999-07-07
THis book has so much information that I never knew about my parakeets. It teachs Care and feeding to even understanding parakeet behavior! This is an excellent book.

Customer Reviews:
Splendid overview.......2001-02-06
Jet Age Flight Helmets is giving a very useful overview of the topic. It is packed with beautiful colour photos making it easy to identify each helmet type. A little more information about the helmets would have been useful and the same goes for an alphabetical index. Nevertheless four stars fully earned.
Photo Reference Bonanza for flight helmet buffs.......1999-10-05
As the co-author, I can say we accomplished what we intended: a photo documentation on operational jet-age flight and space helmets from around the world. As stated in the foreward, with few exceptions, we cover helmets with their major variations that are/were operational, not experimental. Especially interesting are the high-altitude models which are rarely seen and limited in production.
Book Description
Succulents are among the most popular and fascinating plants — with their extraordinary variety of forms, they can be found in the wilderness and cultivated in homes and gardens. A time-tested reference, this first volume includes some of the best-known and most cultivated genera such as Agave, Haworthia, Kalanchoe, and Yucca.

Succulents: The Illustrated Dictionary.......2005-09-13
Beautiful, colorful and descriptive photgraphs with text of a very inclusive group of succulents and family. Excellent help when used to identify succulents in my garden and help to decide which new succulents to purchase.
Good Book for Identification Purposes.......2005-08-09
This books is essentially a photographic encyclopaedia of succulent plants and while it covers an great number of genera and species it would be impossible to cover them all in one volume, hence a second one has been published.
It is excellent for finding that name of that plant you have had in your collection for a long time and have never been able to put a name to. The book gives the genus, species and habitat of the plant. Also some indication of the size the plant may attain and also flower colour.
Of its type it is as good as anything on the market and if you can afford both volumes covers most of the plants available to collectors.
Good beginning........2004-07-08
"Succulents: The Illustrated Dictionary", is the original work of these two partner authors. This concise original offers hundreds of succulents, beautiful and strange, in scientific names. The photographs are as beautiful as "Cacti: The Illustrated Dictionary", but more close up. However, for this guide to be complete, the sequel also needs to be bought along with the original. "Succulents 2" is almost identical to the original in photo and binding quality, which are fine. However, you may as well be purchasing half a book if you only buy one of the series. Both are needed for completion.
The content is rich, featuring different succulent families, such as the poisonous "Euphorbia" genus. (I am still waiting to purchase the sequel to find more interesting families.) When you have these, there is not a chance that you will misidentify differing species.
A must have book for all Succulent Enthusiasts.......2002-07-24
This is a very well written and illustrated book that covers almost all major groups of succulent plants. The photos are really nice and the book has been a great use for plant identification. The author's have also taken the time to explain very basic knowledge of succulent care, not assuming that the readers are advanced botanists.
No cultivation information.......2002-06-16
I am a beginner with succulent plants and rock gardening. This is a very pretty book with information & photos for identifying plants. I find the pictures a bit small (about 2"x3.25"). For me, differentiating some of the Sempervivum species (or Jovibarba) would be difficult with the description and photos provided (someone more expert may find the descriptions quite sufficient).
I really NEED more information on habitat and cultivation. For me, sun exposure, soil & water requirements, pest problems and such are what I want right now. Also of interest, how variation in sun exposure and water will effect color & habit, cold and heat tolerance, winter protection. Once again, for a more experienced gardener, or someone wanting to move into more exotic succulents (I am working with Sedum, and "hens & chicks" (common name)) this may rate five stars.
I did learn that what I know as "hens & chicks" could be Sempervivum, Jovibarba, or Graptopetalum. This is an example of why it would be nice to have a common name cross reference, as mentioned by another reviewer.
Initially, I thought I would return the book, but have decided to keep it. I have learned about some species that I would like to grow, if I can get information on their culture & habit. This reference will allow me to get new species to experiment with. (This may mean special orders, as local nurseries have limited supplies of common plants.) So far, the Crassulaceae family is where my interest lies - See, I have learned something of value!
Book Description
This dictionary concentrates on the globular cacti, particularly Mammillaria, but includes some popular columnar cactus forms such as Echinocereus.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and helpful.......2007-05-23
I have really enjoyed looking at all the different plants in this book. It has helped me identify plants I already owned as well as add to my wish list of exotic plants I want to add to my collection.
Necessary for the New Collector.......2007-01-31
People that have an extensive collection of cacti reference material either don't need this book or, likely, already have it! I use this book in conjuction with other reference books to help me identify the many different species. I would recommend it to anyone.
CACTI: THE ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY.......2005-09-25
SUPERB COMPACT REVIEW OF A VERY BROAD SPECTRUM OF CACTI TO HELP ANY SERIOUS AFFICIONADO OF THESE CRITTERS. ALPHABETICALLY ARRANGED, GOOD PICTURES OF EACH BASIC GROUP WITH CLEAR CONCISE DESCRIPTIONS. I WOULD SAY THIS IS A MUST IN THE LIBRARY OF ANY CACTUS LOVER.
in a few words.......2005-08-25
Very beautiful book, with as much colorfull pictures as you wish. The title should be "dictionary of globular cacti", because only such species are presented.
Family Album, but who is missing.......2004-10-28
It is very difficult to find fault in a book that is so comprehensive in what it sets out to achieve, and I have no wish to do so. However I would like to point out to potential purchasers, if your interest lies in columnar cacti (Cereus, Cleistocactus, Pilosocereus, I know I could go on forever), or anthing from the Opuntia genus, you will be disappointed because they are not included in the book. Of course many other species are not included but this would be virtually impossible to achieve. There is a very good selection of species for all of the more popular genera, many in flower, which obviously aids in the identification process. As a plant identifier this book would be very difficult to beat. Plant care is virtually non existent, but this is not what the book is about. Under most photographs you will get details of the distribution of the plant; flower colour; spination and some of the different synonyms the plant may be labelled under. if you have any serious interest in Cacti you need this book.
Book Description
This second volume covers 900 additional species, and supplies new photographs that illustrate different aspects of the plant, whether in its habitat or in cultivation.
Customer Reviews:
Worth a Place on the Shelf.......2005-11-29
This book basically follows the same format as the previous one. There are enough photographs to sink a battleship, but very little cultural information for the plants.
The book is a boon for identifying that annoying plant that you have never been able to find a name for, but of course it does not cover all species of succulents, a book of that stature would be too heavy to lift.
In my own opinion what lets the book down slightly is that some of the photographs are of young plants that bear no resemblance to how they will look when they are mature. Having said all that, the book has very little competition. There are thousands of books on cacti, but very few on the other succulents. It is certainly worth a place in the collection of all those interested in these wonderful plants.
The best got even better.......2002-07-24
If you liked Maurizio Sajeva and Mariangela Costanzo's first book, Succulents, then you will really like their second edition titled Succulents II. The book's outline is basically the same with some new information provided. The photo's, like their first book are superior and serve as a great means of plant identification. The addition of having the book in hard cover form (the first is paperback), makes this book an excellent reference material without concern on wear and tear when carrying it around the garden. Amazon books has the best price on this book and I've shopped around before purchasing it. If you time it right, you can order it with a couple other things and take advantage of free shipping and handling. I think that's pretty good deal.
Succulents II: The New Illustrated Dictionary.......2002-01-10
For this subject, this is a "must-have" reference book. It is very visual. The images are great and the authors have gone beyond the commonplace. Do I recommend it? I give it 5 "Forget-about-it's".
An impressive catalog of succulent species........2001-03-06
Documents around 1,200 species of succulent plants in an A to Z format. Entries include a color photograph, species name, family, a brief description of appearance and habit, and details of specimen's origin. Introduction provides a brief overview of succulent families and representative genera. Appendices cover alternative names (scientific, not common) and additional reading materials, broken out by family.
Bear in mind when considering this book that it is a _survey_ compilation, not an identification guide. It sets out to catalog the astounding variety of succulents worldwide, and never touches on care or maintenance. Pictures are often of salient features, such as flowers or stem structures, rather than of the entire plant, and many are photographed in their native habitat (by which I mean, they are not always the flawless beauties that we are accustomed to seeing in plant books --although the settings are often as fascinating as the plants themselves!).
I very much enjoy thumbing through this book. Although I personally find it of very little practical value, I would recommend it to any plant enthusiast with an appreciation for diversity or photography.
Another must have reference.......2000-07-16
The authors have begun where the first book left off. Very similar in size, the sequal has some info on CITES status, as well a general overview, of certain genus and species. For easier identification, several species have multiple pictures, ensuring that pertinent information is not lost from a habit shot. Some species are repeated from the intitial 1994 release, but many are new. Certainly an invaluable source for species determination, individually and in concert with the original.
