Book Description

Nose to Nose is a memoir about healing. Recovering from emergency surgery in a foreign country, Barry Schieber finds himself buying a puppy to bring back to Montana. He had never thought of owning a dog, any dog--let alone one that will soon tip the scales at over a hundred pounds.

Once home, wherever they go, Moritz draws people to him. Sensing something therapeutic about Moritz, Barry comes upon a way to share this quality with others. So begins their partnership for weekly volunteer visits at a local hospital.

As this chronicle unfolds, the reader comes to appreciate, with Barry, how a seemingly simple interaction with Moritz leads to healing and to engaging in the lives of others.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for dog lovers.......2005-01-23

Nose to Nose is a reflection of how one beautiful, charismatic Bernese Mountain Dog named Moritz shows a capacity to comfort and distract from human suffering.

The book chronicles author Schieber's trips with Moritz to visit hospital patients in Missoula, Montana. Patients feel instant rapport with the huge friendly dog and come to life during Moritz's visits. A woman paralyzed on her left side spontaneously hugs Moritz with her left arm. The dog plants his paws on the bed of a moaning three-year-old in a cast and touches noses with the child, who breaks into giggles.

Thank goodness, Author Schieber doesn't attribute miracle healing to Moritz. But the dog's simple presence provides distraction from illness and brightens the spirit.

Nose to Nose is an easy read. I finished it in one sitting. For its deceptively simple style, the book offers profound insight. The story is moving without being sentimental. A must for anyone who appreciates the powerful bond between dog and human.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Warming.......2002-12-19

This is truly a wonderful and moving book. It made me laugh and cry. If you are a dog owner and lover, you will love this book and relate to it. If you don't own a dog, you will want to adopt one after you read this book. This book, written by Barry Schieber, is written from the heart. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful, subtle, and deeply touching book........2002-11-23

Nose to Nose is a slim volume but within its pages lies a wealth of insight on the human condition and what it takes to understand and appreciate the extraordinary beauty and meaning in what seem to be mundane events. Schieber does not beat you over the head with his observations, rather he lays them gently in front of you, much as his dog Moritz gently lays his head on a childs leg, apparently doing nothing but nevertheless bringing an obviously healing energy with him. Schieber doesn't even ask that you take up his offerings, he just puts them there and leaves it totally up to you. Perhaps it's his Buddhist background at work (he was once Dean of Nyingma Institute in Berkeley, the teaching arm of Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche, one of the first Tibetan Lamas to come to the U.S.), but whatever it is, he succeeds in permeating his book with the same gently penetrating energy that seems to emanate from his pal Moritz. In his End Note, Schieber makes clear the subtlety of Moritz's healing presence and the power of his being. Listing briefly a few of the kinds of experiences he has with Moritz and following each of them with the words "nothing much, " Schieber adds this: "Before long, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be once again reunited so intimately with life. Thank you, Moritz." And so this book, that also has the ability to reunite us with life, with the incredible beauty of the mundane that slips so quickly by as we look for something more important, more meaningful, more gratifying. Yes, Thank you Moritz, and thank you Barry Schieber for such a peaceful and gentle reminder of how much we miss as we wander often so blindly through this wonderful life. Nose to Nose is the kind of book that you either "get" or you don't, but believe me, its well worth taking the chance.

2 out of 5 stars great dog, so so book.......2002-10-28

As an advertisement for the bernese breed, this is great. As a book, it is very superficial. I too have bernese as therapy dogs and have been doing it for years. Mr. Schrieber needs to do more than 12 visits to really get into it. Also, he needs to delve deeper into his feelings. I think it is wonderful that he will travel such a long way to do this work, it is very important work. A little more work on the book would have been good.

Book Description

This authoritative reference work identifies thousands of marks from American, English and European potters. In the main body of the text, the marks are presented by potter in alphabetical order. Included in each potter's listing is the location of the firm, a brief history of the company, the span of years from the firm's establishment until its dissolution, and any former and subsequent company affiliations associated with that firm. The marks associated with that potter are presented in chronological order. Also provided are listings of further readings for those wishing either to delve deeper into the history of the firm or to view images of wares upon which these marks appear. American and Canadian importers, and the potters for whom they imported wares, are also identified. In addition, numerous appendices provide future information pertaining to ware types and printed patterns produced by the various potters, registry dates, and much more. A glossary of pottery terms and an extensive bibliography round out the presentation. This encyclopedia, years in the making, provides the most current research on potters spanning two hundred years and is the essential reference for everyone interested in ceramics.

5 out of 5 stars Kowalsky Book Surpasses Godden's Standard Reference.......2002-01-08

For years, serious collectors of pottery and porcelain relied on the works of Geoffrey Godden to assist them in their search for manufacturer's marks. Other authors produced different books, but Godden always remained the standard. Those days are over as Arnold A. and Dorothy E. Kowalsky have now produced what will undoubtedly become the definitive ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MARKS. Emphasizing the products of American, English and European earthenware, ironstone and stoneware from 1780-1980, the Kowalsky's present - as their book jacket states - "Makers, Marks, and Patterns in Blue and White, Historic Blue, Flow Blue, Mulberry, Romantic Transferware, Tea Leaf and White Ironstone." Containing 688 pages and hundreds of manufacturer's marks, this masterpiece highlights - and cross references to Geoffrey Godden - American Potteries and Marks, English Potters and Patterns, and European Potters and Patterns. Also included are notes from selected authorities spotlighting transfer printing on blue and white ceramics, historical Staffordshire, Flow Blue, Mulberry Ironstone, White Ironstone and Copper Lustre Decorative Motifs on White Ironstone China. The authors have diligently provided a guide for readers to know how to use their book. Some books are written for information; some for pleasure. This wonderful addition to the world of antiques and collectibles provides both information and pleasure. You really can't get any better than this!!

4 out of 5 stars Good examples of molded utilitarian stoneware 1880-1920........1999-03-12

Book illustrates good pictorial examples of molded utilitarian stoneware (pitchers, butter crocks, pie plates, etc.) made between 1880-1920. Artwork, flowers, birds, etc. decorations are usually molded into these pieces. Most illustrated stoneware is first covered with white glaze and then with additional diffuse colored glaze usually blue. Some pieces use various solid colored glazes. A few illustrated pieces use stamped blue decoration over white glaze. This book, however, does not really deal with true salt glaze, hand decorated pottery prior to 1900. For this reason the title could be somewhat misleading to some collectors.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Hard to follow.......2005-10-31

I purchased this book to find out more about decorated stoneware. This book is basically a haphazard listing of pieces that were auctioned off at different auctions. The descriptions are not always above or below an item. Sometimes they are very hard to follow. The prices are the actual auction price. No information on how to tell where a piece is from, that is not marked. No easy way to read this book.

Book Description

In 1813 Charles James Mason gave the public just what they needed, patenting his "ironstone china." This durable yet beautiful dinnerwarewas stronger and less expensive than the china that then dominated the market. And its white, unadorned base soon became popular as a canvas for decorations such as Flow Blue, Mulberry, and Copper Lustre, especially the Tea Leaf motif. This pictorial and collectors' guide provides an alphabetic listing of all known shapes and their makers, illustrated with more than 700 color photographs to help easily identify pieces and show the ironstone in detail never seen before. Collectors will find this cross-referencing tool invaluable. Included is also a miscellaneous chapter, which brings to new light the unusual and hard to find pieces and a section devoted entirely to children's sets. Color photographs of makers' marks are identified and dated to aid those wishing to date their pieces.

This is a surprisingly comprehensive overview for such a small book (173 pages). Decent photography shows the shapes, makers' marks and various decorative motifs that are traditional to white ironstone. The pricing guide is helpful and the bibliography will help expand your interest.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The New Definitive Reference on the Subject.......2007-06-05

Amazon's titling deletes the second author's name, that of Rodney Hampson, who previously co-authored with Diana Edwards the Dry-Bodied Stonewares book, as with this effort published by the Antique Collectors' Club. Following the previous books on this subject by Luxmoore and Mountford, respectively, the authors have expanded on those works exponentially, providing massive amounts of new information, the result of obviously diligent research into hitherto untouched archives. Balanced with the text is the number of objects illustrated, many in color which, given the title, may seem strange. Understand that the "White" of the title refers to the body of these objects and not to the final appearance as many were decorated in a variety of ways.
The book is encyclopaedic in its reach, offering five appendices, (Thomas Wedgwoods of the Overhouse, Burslem; a listing of potters; price lists of the period; patterns; shapes and tiles; and customers), an extensive bibliography, 28 pages of references, all in addition to the chapters on early development, industrialization, demand, raw materials, manufacture, marketing, export, the collectors, and a focused look at thirteen potters and their wares based on archaeological evidence.
This is an essential volume for collectors, students of British ceramic history, and those interested in the material culture of the 18th century in Britain and North America.

Due to a plumbing fault in the house, my family have been composting in the back garden on a daily basis for over a year. What a bonus to stumble upon this book and find out that our actions have been helping to preserve the future of our planet! A number of residents in our street have complainined that the local environment has been suffering from some kind of unpleasant air pollution of late, so we feel proud to be putting something back.

5 out of 5 stars I now have a composting toilet behind the house.......2007-06-21

This was our primary source material for building and maintaining our composting toilet. Works great, saves on water, makes for good plant food, and only smells like sawdust inside.

          5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2007-05-12

This book combines humor, biology, humor, facts, humor, and specific instructions. Did I mention humor? ;-)

It is also incredibly thought-provoking. The author points out that we are one of the few countries that defecate in our drinking water.

We now have two composting toilets. The one we spent over a $1000 for before we bought the book and the $50 one we built after we bought the book. Guess which one is easier to deal with?!

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this!.......2007-03-12

Wonderful book that I wish everyone would read. Great information.

1 out of 5 stars Insightful and well grounded book.......2007-03-10

The author created a masterpiece with this book, combining his vast experience of producing humanure with scientific insight, and great humor which made the book fun to read. I'm convinced that composting manure is the safest way to safely deal with our own excrement. Our society has got to be crazy to be flushing this immensely valuable resource to be dealt with later as it ends up polluting our rivers, oceans, and drinking water. I highly recommend this book to any concious reader who would like to greatly reduce their impact upon this earth.
