Great book. A good amount of information. I bought the book after adopting a Maine Coon mix kitten and was a little confused by the statement that she wasn't meant for indoor living!

4 out of 5 stars Quite a Good Guide.......2002-12-06

Cat books are far less common than dog guidebooks, and this is quite a good example of the genre. Each breed is shown in one or more pictures (usually showing different color variations), described in fairly detailed text, and summarized in a table describing physical attributes, coat care, and temperment.
The book is divided into sections by coat length; long hair, semi-long hair, and short hair. A brief section at the end discussing breeding and raising kittens.

A few minor quibbles: the book was originally published in England, so while it does talk about American CFA standards, the emphasis is on British standards -- and more coverage is given to breeds common in England, with less given to American breeds.
They also note that some breeds (Maine Coons, for example) are 'freedom loving' and not suited to be kept indoors. Most responsible breeders/owners would argue that ALL cats, regardless of breed, are better off indoors, or if permitted out, still kept under control with fence or leash.

4 out of 5 stars A Field Guide to Cats!!!.......2004-08-04

You know those handy little field guides to birds, insects, flowers, and so forth, by Peterson, by the Smithsonian, and by National Geographic? Well, this is the same sort of thing, only the subject is cats! There are a couple of hundred color photos, some large, and many small. They illustrate not just every breed, but most color and pattern variants of every breed. There are short descriptions of each breed and checklists of the pros and cons of each breed. You can use it to quickly nail down the identity of any cat, similarly to identifying a bird from a field guide. Due to the superb layout and organization, it's a lot quicker than using some bird field guides. More importantly, you can pick out a cat that you might like to own by very quickly comparing the looks and characteristics of many different cats.

The only drawback to this book is that it was written in England and the named and accepted breeds are different there. A careful reading of the text will tell you what the differences are, but there are some gaps in their knowledge of American breeds and norms.

Barron's Encyclopedia of Cat Breeds has much more detailed and precise descriptive text. The Ultimate Guide to Cats has much more beautiful cat photography. Neither one can match the ease and speed with which you can compare the looks and characteristics of different cats and neither one has as comprehensive a set of photos of the different colors and patterns as Cat Breeds of the World.

If you want your cat to become famous then this is the book for you to read. This book explains all of the areas that cat judges are looking for when they are searching for the winners, i.e., movie stars in a cat show. Photos are in color and classic.

1 out of 5 stars This book was a real disappointment.......2001-10-05

The write-up and history sections of each breed in this book are very shallow, not detailed, and in some cases inaccurate. For example, the Chantilly Tiffany breed was NOT listed or discussed. Instead, this book lumps the Chantilly/Tiffany breed together with the British Tiffanie breed (p. 206), which as accurately stated in other books, "British Tiffanies have nothing to do with the American Chantilly/Tiffany breed." The write-up in this book is just plain wrong.

Furthemore, most of the information in this book is of the level of detail about what you would expect from a middle-school or high-school book report. I was very disappointed. "The new Encylopedia of the Cat", by Dr. Fogle (DK Publishing) which we ordered from Amazon.com at the same time, is much better and has a lot more accurate and informative details. If you want one book, get Dr. Fogle's. "The Illustrated Encylopedia of Cat Breeds" is shallow and inaccurate. It was a disappointment and a waste of money.

This is the best book that I have come across dealing with the different cat breeds. It is very detailed as far as coat type, coat color and coat patterns are concerned. It also gives you a breaksdown of the different show points. A truly wonderful book with beautiful color photos to help you classify any cat!

    Book Description

When Crown Prince Gustaf returned from Versailles in 1771 to ascend the throne of Sweden, he was determined to give his country a leading place in Europe culturally as well as politically. The style he fostered--Neoclassicism--was itself an international movement; there are echos in the interiors displayed here of the Louis XVI and Empire modes. Pieces of furniture may reflect French, English, or German influences, or be copied from objects discovered at Pompeii--but all are suffused by a distinctively Swedish freshness and the northern light. From royal salons to modest spatter-painted Biedermeier halls, Hkan Groth and Fritz von der Schulenburg open the doors on an astonishing sequence of interiors; some, intensely private, are little known even in Sweden. The evocative photographs, all specially taken for this book, present in detail the decoration and furnishings of twenty houses and apartments. The text traces the evolution of the Neoclassical style in Sweden, placing it in its wider European context, and explores each of the buildings and its history. Plans, and original drawings by the architects and designers, complete the picture. These beautiful interiors are of unique value today not only as treasure houses of superb craftsmanship but also as a stimulus to contemporary decorators, and as a reminder that an international language can be spoken in a delightfully personal way.

This book is a treasure of neoclassicism in Sweden. It is supported by sensible (not gushy interior design talk) text and is logically sequenced.

The pictures and additional material is excellent; although the lighting in some of the photographs is less than perfect.

This is an inspirational reference for the topic.

Wilkie and Hurt have done a fantastic job of compiling the great works of Western literature - no easy task, to be sure. Their brief notes on each author and piece of writing made for a fine introduction to the readings. Although there are additional pieces I would have welcomed, it makes a superb overview. For academic or general reading purposes, it offers the finest assortment of uncut texts I have seen.

    Book Description

This book is the first complete study of the circumstances which led to the building of Castle Howard, one of the greatest and best-known English country houses. It describes how and why Charles Howard, third earl of Carlisle, decided to build it; how the architect Sir John Vanbrugh received his first commission; how the building was paid for and where the money came from; what the original interiors looked like; how the gardens and park were laid out; and the decision taken to build the first classical mausoleum in England, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It relates the physical appearance of the architecture to the hopes, desires and personalities of those involved in the building and makes it possible to look at the house in the way that it was intended to be seen by visitors in the eighteenth century. The Building of Castle Howard should appeal to anyone who is interested in eighteenth-century architecture, in the history of gardens, in country houses, and in a historical detective story of a house which Sir John Vanbrugh was determined should be 'the top seat and garden of England.'

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A traditional survey but an exceptionally good one.......2001-06-27

The 'Building of Castle Howard' is a sometimes amusing and consistently fluid account of the conception and construction of the Third Earl of Carlisle's estate in Yorkshire. The patron, from a 'high-handed' and cocky young Whig to a dour but sincere father of miscreant and ungrateful offspring [...] is addressed in the opening chapter, and the rationale behind the demolition of a provincial village to build an architectural showpiece is traced. The architects - Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor - are examined in similar contexts.

However, a descrition of Sir Thomas Robinson's incongrous alterations to the splendid mausoleum (1729 - 1745, though Summerson suggested 1742 as the date of completion) is not a sufficient account of his activities at the estate: the northern range of the house features several rooms completed under Robinson's supervision, but these are simply not mentioned.

The author combs out an icongraphical programme in Pelligrini's ceiling paintings in the domed hall (ie, the 'Fall of the Phaeton'), but a similar analysis with respect to the garden monuments draws different conclusions. Carlisle's changing position as a patron and politician accounts for this: the estate shifts, in Saumarez Smith's opinion, from being a an opulent panorama to an introverted retirement home for the earl, whom, in his dotage and increasingly unhappy free time, commenced autonomous study in matters of contemporary religious thought. This, therefore, effected his decision to build a grand mausoleum rather than allow his remains to fall into the hands of what his lengthy (and only) poem preserved at Castle Howard, described as corpulent and corrupt Anglican clergmen. As an explanation for the development of the garden buildings, this is not as simplistic as my description might phrase it: the book's account is entirely convincing. I do not imagine that 'The Building of Castle Howard' - an inexpensive but well-illustrated gem - will be in print much into the future. However, its interest is broader than simply an account of architectural patronage. Unlike other studies of 18th Century British art which read as prosaic 'case-studies' (especially in the case of portrait painting, all of which make the same point), Saumarez Smith's book is an autonomous and compelling analysis of specific buildings and their conception, not a dour treatise from which established generalities are laboriously combed out.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2000-03-05

this book is soo good, (apart from its prise), it describes how were castles built and different types of castles. For the price, ive expected more, but the book is still good.

            Book Description

The Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly 1000 years ago, making it the oldest work on Japanese gardening; in fact, the oldest book on gardening in the world! In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide both an English-language translation of this classic work; and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening.
A Japanese court noble wrote the Sakuteiki during the Heian period (794-1184). During this critical era in Japanese history cultural influences on poetry, clothing-and gardening-that had been imported from China and Korea over the previous centuries were reexamined and reinterpreted into their unique Japanese forms. The Sakuteiki contains the first systematic record of this new gardening style-with both technical advice on gardening-building (much of which is still followed in today's Japanese gardens) and an examination of the four central threads of allegorical meaning which were integral features of Heian-era garden design.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-01-16

I thought that it was a pretty good book. It wasn't what I had expected and do wish that there were more pictures illistrating what the author was talking about. Also the first half of the book was an introduction and history lesson that was long and somewhat boring. The Sakeutiki itself (which was the second half of the book) was interesting.

            5 out of 5 stars Serenity distilled.......2002-06-03

The original blueprint to create a Japanese garden filled with empty spaces, quiet, calm and tranquillity. I enjoy simply reading and rereading the detailed instructions which send my mind travelling along paths of gardens I've yet to see or create. Happy gardening.

            5 out of 5 stars Once in a millenium..........2001-12-07

The editorial comments on this book can hardly do it justice.
Not only does this book give you a clear, up-to-date translation of probably the earliest practical garden handbook, a treasure in itself, where those instructions remain relevant to gardening generally and japanese gardening in particular today - you get the result of an extraordinary cooperation between east and west, namely the attention, erudition and dedication of these two thoughtful and careful authors. In addition, you get almost 150 pages of a detailed, yet clearly comprehensible, well illustrated and very readable introduction to japanese gardens, their influences and the sakuteiki itself. If you have ever felt the coffee table japanese garden books are too vague and the academic books too turgid this book majestically spans and outshines both genre - Buy it!

During the first six-seven centuries of the Islamic era there was a very lively exchange between Christian and Islamic thinking. It was a period when Christian theologians of various denominations had to find ways of expressing their traditional ideas in Arabic. In the process their thinking developed. The papers in this volume represent the wide range of this field, including detailed studies of such key writers as Abu Racitah, Yahya b. bAdi and Theodore Abu Qurrah, as well as probably the earliest, anonymous, Christian apology in Arabic. The Islamic context in which such writers worked is also dealt with, as is the wider geographical spread of Christian Arabic thought extending to Islamic Spain. CONTENTS Jorgen S. A useful and rather technical discussion of the early Arabic Christian encounter with Islam. The book description already given covers the bases, but it should be noted that this is not useful for someone who is neither a polyglot nor an advanced reader in this area of study.

Other useful books in this regard are Cragg's "Muhammad and the Christian", "Paths to the Heart" edited by Cutsinger is very useful if you have an interest in Sufism and Eastern Orthodoxy, Bell's "The Origin of Islam in Its Christian Environment", Daniel Sahas' "John of Damascus on Islam: The Heresy of the Ishmaelites", and Stockle's "The Doctrine of Islam and Christian Belief".

I also enjoyed "The Prophet and the Messiah: An Arab Christian's Perspective in Islam and Christianity" by Chawkat Moucarry.

One little observation is that many books of this sort approach Islam from the Protestant theological tradition. In many ways this seems to be useful since the majority of Protestants and all true Muslims hold a "Quranic" notion of the Book. That is, it is literal and intact as given. In Christian terms, this means that functionally most Protestants have zero conception of how the New Testament was formed from the liturgical heart of the Church, and not vice versa. So in this way the Protestant doctrine of sola scriptura (bible alone) has a false bond with Islam on a textual level. It should be noted, however, that when speaking with Moslems it needs to be remembered that their equivalent to Jesus Christ incarnate of Mary as God is not Muhammad, but the Qur'ân. We have an incarnated God, they have an "inscripturated" God. That said, the Moucarry book is quite useful as well.
