Book Description
Articles in Time and US News and World Reports have cited alternative medicine as the fastest-growing area in veterinary care. More than ever, pet owners are demanding facts on using these non-invasive healing methods for their pets. Author Amy Shojai has interviewed top vets across the country, including members of the Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and noted veterinarian Susan Wynn. Pet owners will learn why some vets moved away from mainstream medicine, how the "Healing Instinct" leads animals to their own natural cures, and how alternative therapies actually work. Readers will find tips for treating problems like aggression, fleas, and heart problems with accupressure, homeopathy, nutrition, herbs, exercise and traditional home remedies. Sidebars give "Alternative Success" stories and warning signs for when to call the vet. Now pet owners can be sure their pets have the same practical, holistic healing options as humans do.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-06-17
This book is absolutely awesome! It begins by explaining what alternative medicine is, why pets get sick, and making the switch from allopathic to holistic medicine. It also describes, from A to Z, common ailments and how various vets treat them. There are snippets about how pets treat themselves for certain diseases, when to call the vet, and anecdotes pertaining to the ailment. It also has an extensive alternative healing resource guide.
Natural Healing.......2007-05-26
This book is full of several remedies for many different illnesses, problems, etc...
Highly recommended.
Another winner from Amy.......2005-07-22
Amy has written yet another good book for pet owners. As the trend in natural healing continues, good resources such as this book, The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats, 8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, and The Allergy Solution for Dogs serve as important sources of information for pet owners. Read this book and start learning how you can work with your doctor to keep your pet happy and healthy.
Saving my dog's life.......2005-07-06
A friend knew how my aging dog, Nina, was quite ill and that my family was not planning a second surgery, as she might not survive the operation and, besides, the mass on her liver had grown back in a year. She gave me a copy of this wonderful book, which gives options for health care. Impressed with the book, I ordered many copies and have given a copy to others who love their dogs and cats and want an option to drugs or surgery. Here it is! Nina's had extra time with her family and I have a new respect for natural healing, for pets and for people. You should buy several copies of "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats", so you may share the love.
Couldn't Put it Down................2002-06-25
I am in the process of learning about holistic health care for my 2 lhasa apsos and have recently purchased a few books on the subject. I started one book and set it aside to finish later. I picked up "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats" and couldn't put it down until I was finished! I was so impressed with the layout of such a large amount of information. This book is chock-full of great information and it is presented in a terrific format giving the read first the "The Signs" of the condition, then "The Cause" and the "The Solutions". The solutions can be numerous with the author offering different suggestions and not seeming to be biased towards any one particular holistic remedy. Directions are very clear, concise, and easily understood. Some choices mentioned are natural diet (which seems to be the first and obvious step towards better health care for an animal), natural supplements, herbal remedies, vitamins, aroma-therapy, magnet therapy, accupressure with diagrams shown, and of course, recommendations to call your vet to assist in dosage. Although you feel there is alot to learn, the information is broken down so well, it is easy to retain alot of what you read in the first go around with this book. I am sure I will be picking it up time and time again while working to get my dogs in the best possible health. Also included are some behavior problems. I guarantee you will learn some new and valuable information!

Natural Remedies for Dogs and Cats.......2002-11-29
The vast majority of people today believe that commercial pet food provides a safe and healthy diet for their dogs and cats. Veterinarians, who generally receive minimal instruction in nutrition, also recommend feeding only commercial animal food. CJ Puotinen disputes this advice in her latest book, Natural Remedies for Dogs and Cats.
She's interviewed dozens of holistic pet care experts and studied all the available research on pet care. Time and time again, the evidence points to commercial pet foods as the source of chronic health problems in animals.
If left to themselves, dogs and cats eat raw prey that they have caught. This gives them a variety of food and nutrients. Even if prepared foods could imitate the variety, which they don't, the processing they undergo destroys the nutrients. Additionally, commercial pet foods contain a host of unhealthy products.
Puotinen describes the best diets for dogs and cats, and then explains how to achieve that. She even includes some recipes.
The second section of the book is devoted to natural remedies for ailing animals. She describes the basic nutrients needed by all animals--our pets need vitamins and minerals, just as we do--and how to best include them in a healthy diet. She then explains how various herbs are used in achieving and maintaining pet health. This section also includes recipes, such as one for a natural flea powder.
Puotinen provides an extensive resource section, including e-mail and web addresses.
She says her purpose "is to define, explain, and demonstrate herbal and nutritional techniques that many pet owners have used with good results," adding that "an informed owner is a pet's best medical insurance." Readers will find that she has provided all the information and resources they need in Natural Remedies for Dogs and Cats to help them help their pets have long and healthy lives.
Natural Remedies for Dogs and Cats.......2000-08-11
A 5 star book for sure! CJ Puotinen has provided yet another wonderfully supportive and educational reference book along the same lines as her indispensable "The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care". For those of us who want to keep our pets healthy the natural way, this book offers everything from feeding the best diet for our mainly carnivore friends--a raw food diet--to making your own natural flea repellents with oodles of terrific informaiton inbetween. I have saved so much money by making my own tinctures, etc. but more important, have healthier dogs because of what I learned and practiced from these books. That means hardly any visits to a veterinarian! The added bonus is the references in the back of the book. Everything at your fingertips. You can't beat the wealth of information for the price of this book!
This book was a lifesaver.......2000-04-15
I have a copy of this book, and of CJ's Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care. I raise all my dogs (I raise Jack Russells) on an all natural diet. The recipes that I found in these books helped save the lives of a litter of pups that I had who lost thier mother at 3 weeks. At that age, conventional dogfood would not have saved them. And what about the preservatives that are in commercial dog food? I cannot understand how some one can claim to love thier pets, while all the while feeding them food thats full of poison? This book has made me more aware of what the average consumer does not know, and I encourage every one to take the time to do research on BHA and BHT. Those are ingredients that you will find on most of your pet foods as a preservative. Thank You CJ for writing this book, and my pups sure do thank you too. If you start an animal on an all natural diet in the beginning, or a little at a time, it will go more smoothly then trying to change them cold turkey.
My dogs didn't really like the whole idea!.......2000-03-28
I didn't find this book so useful. My dogs refuse any otherkind of food except their freshly cooked chicken i prepare for themevery night. Although I tried to follow some advises from this book, I saw that they prefer to starve than eat anything else.I thought they would die since they didn't eat anything for 2-3 days and gave up! The author insists that it's a matter of time that your dog will get used to the new diet, but I see that it is not. I think it has to do with the personality of each and every dog, and that's the reason I will never get a book like this. They don't change their nutricion no matter what I do, so I prefer buying books which deal with their psychological world and ways to communicate with them, instead of books which actually waste my time reading them.

This book is bogus.......2007-02-28
I read in this book thay beef is bad to feed your pet, however; when i read deeper the book states that one should feed the pet a beef knuckle as a means of nutrition. BUYER BEWARE!
A little too in depth for the Average Dog Owner..........2005-05-28
I purchased this book thinking that it would give me simple at home remedies (like cooking white rice and chicken for digestive ailments)...Um, not quite.
It is definitely "holistic", meaning most, if not all, the remedies call for ingredients not found in the typical (even holistic) household. Fresh/ Raw Bayberry, Bach flowers, Red Clover, Calendula, Devil's Claw, Goldenseal etc - not the liquids or pills, but the fresh herbs. Sorry, but I don't have fresh herbs just laying around the house and you can't find them at your local health food store either.
Needless, to say I haven't tried any of the remedies, but I have found it useful for info purposes. For instance, the book recc putting boiled Calendula on wounds. Instead I bought a Calendula salve/ointmet and use it for minor cuts for my pet and I. The chapter on dog food/diet is very imformative, and my pet is living proof of what a good dog food can do for your pet.
I think this book would be a good resource for a family that has tried "conventional vet" medicine with no relief, and is looking for an alternative form of disease treatment.
PS- If this review helped you please vote for it...
Natural Remedies that Really Work!.......2000-01-04
I ran across this book when my elderly dog was diagnosed with a heart murmur and heart disease. When conventional medicine couldn't help I decided to give natural medicine a try. I used some of the remedies suggested for heart disease and was frankly astounded at his improvement. We were very happy to have him with us for 5 more years than I expected. The book is easy to understand and ailments and their remedies are listed in alphabetical order in the back of the book. This is really a must have for every dog and cat owner that wants to find out how they can improve the health of their pet naturally.
Very effective and practical self-help treatments.......1999-01-04
This book is very well organized and extremely easy to understand for the layman. Using the techniques suggested in the book I was able to cure my 12 year old cat from a 2 year bout with diabetes. The book descibes a variety of natural healing techniques that can be employed to deal with a wide range of ailments that pets often contract. There's no hocus pocus about this book, it's strictly a how to do it manual. I heartily recommend this book to anyone with an open mind to the power of herbs, acupuncture, massage and good nutrition.

Good Reference Tool.......2007-07-21
This book is a great source of information, good descriptions of many plants and shrubs. I refer to it often....
Big, helpful book.......2007-07-16
This book is everything I wanted in a reference book. Clear concise information, useful to the beginner gardener. Beautiful photograghs too!
Great Reference Book.......2005-07-20
This is a very extensive and well organized reference book for the home gardener but as the title says, its an encyclopedia and does not provide suggestions, garden planning or tips. I bought this book along with the "Gardening All-in-One for Dummies" for the "how to's" and it has been a perfect combination.
Book Description
Of all the flowers in the horticultural universe, there is none to rival the rose. Its universally adored charm, history and place in the culture of the world are unsurpassed. Now, for the first time there is a book that captures everything that makes roses such beloved flowers. The Encyclopedia of Roses is a useful and comprehensive reference guide that is presented in a way that reflects and compliments the beauty of the flower.
This oversized, lavish volume which features gorgeous drawings and hundreds of full-color photographs, will appeal not only to avid gardeners, but to anyone who wants to revel in the history and splendor of roses.
The majority of the book is made up of several sections, including: - The history of roses - Detailed botanical information - Advice on incorporating roses into a garden plan - Information on planting and nurturing roses - Profiles of all the most popular varieties
The book presents extensive instruction on cultivating roses as a business to provide products for florists and health-food retailers. There is also enlightening and valuable information on the use of roses as herbal medicine.
Rose lovers will return to the book again and again for unique information such as the symbolic appeal of roses for artists and poets. With its sidebars, diagrams, glossary, index, drawings and hundreds of full-color photographs, this is one encyclopedia that will appeal to many senses.

Choose your rose well...........2001-02-07
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ROSES is probably one of the best survey book about roses available. I'd give it 5-stars but it was written by a German for a German market and has been translated for American gardeners. Most of the factoids translate well, but I can help looking at the photos of Schneewittchen and remembering a tale I heard at a garden lecture about how this rose was named "Snow White" in Germany, and became "Iceberg" when it crossed the Atlantic. I don't know if the story is true, but my husband speaks German and when the white fluffy stuff falls he calls it "schnee."
ROSES contains a 20-page introduction on the history of the rose--a long history that could probably not be covered adequately in 500 pages. Markley provides a good synopsis with the ususal mention of the Apothecary Rose, the Wars of the Roses--with quotes from some of Shakespeare's plays, and a box insert on Malmaison and Josephine's love of roses. I knew the rose was symbolic of Mary, and that rosery beads where first made of rolled rose petals, but it's nice to be reminded.
The remaining 200 or so pages are devoted to the botony, horticulture, and growing needs of roses as well as a nice index filled with an annotated rose list consisting of those specimins Markley prefers. The information Markely provides about container growing, winter protection, planting and maintenance is extremely useful and detailed.
The photographs are pretty, but they have been doctored--the color intensified via a wash which makes the flowers appear out-of-focus. This is an unnecessary ammendment given the beauty of the roses--it appears the photos were in color to begin with. I don't know whether this is the result of inferior photography (in Germany??) or German pandering to stupid Americans who can't tell the difference, but it reminds me of the unscrupulous garden catalogs Allen Lacy complains about that alter the photographs of their stock to fool the consumer. Experienced gardeners know when they are looking at the real thing.
The book contains a listing of gardens in Germany where roses are grown, either as a featured plant or the main event. Not surprisingly, the author recommends you tour these gardens in summer. If you collect good garden books this is a useful addition for your collection. If you're an American gardener and can afford only one book, better stick to Taylor's Rose Book which contains useful information without obviously altered photos.
Encyclopedia of Roses.......2000-08-12
Beautiful pictures! A lot of information which was very well organized. I can't wait to put all this info to use in my garden!
Customer Reviews:
Good, basic house plant reference book........2005-05-22
This was the first book on houseplants that I ever purchased, and it is a good all-around houseplant guide.
In the front of the book is general information on selecting, caring for and propagating plants. There are also a number of photos demonstrating how to arrange plants in attractive settings around your home. This is nice because the photos in the "encyclopedia" portion of the book are nice, but don't let you see the impact they can create in a room.
There are lots of plants listed in the encyclopedia portion. Each entry contains background info about the plant as well as care requirements and propagation techniques.
Overall, I've been fairly pleased with this book. It's definitely a good one for beginners.
Book Description
Avoiding hard-to-understand medical jargon, the four-volume “Gale Encyclopedia of Children’s Health” uses language that parents can understand, while still providing enough depth to benefit today's health science students. The set provides in-depth coverage of pediatric diseases and disorders, along with issues related to physical and cognitive/behavioral development.

Exactly what I wanted.......2007-06-06
I have been looking for this book for over a year, and hadn't been able to find it. It is just what I was looking for and has great information, and really nice pictures.
Faithful Companion for Over 10 Years.......2007-05-01
This book has been on my most used shelf for over ten years. It has some shortcomings that are easily augmented by anyone with a good herbal library. I love the layout and medicinal information as well as the history of the different herbal systems in the world. Great Book!
Pretty good ..........2001-07-04
... if you like your herbs from the herb store, that is. And if you like the TCM view of things.
I prefer books about herbs that I can grow myself, or pick in my back yard. I'm really not all that enthusiastic about books about exotics that I have to buy from far away places.
I also prefer books that focus on herbs used in the western herbal tradition. This book has just a tad too much of an emphasis on Chinese herbs for my tastes.
Finally, I _like_ books with one single, sometimes enormous, index. This one has two. I'm always looking things up in the wrong one, in books like this.
YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), of course.
Excellent but not the most recent version...........2000-12-11
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MEDICINAL PLANTS by Andrew Chevallier is a relatively comprehensive source of information about herbal uses for healing. This is not the most recent volume by this author, however. The 2000 version is more comprehensive and includes the most current information about research associated with herbal medicinal uses.
A less expensive and highly useful book on herbs and their uses is available from Rodale, entitled, ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERBS. The Rodale book includes information missing from this version of Chevallier's book concerning negative effectives of herbs including accidental poisoning owing to misuse or problems with plant identification. Also, Rodale has been the the organic growing business for several decades and offers information about plant horticulture. Chevallier's book is better illustrated, and filled with many colorful photographs but relatively less text (ratio of 1:4 pages for each item).
Unlike Ody's book, THE COMPLETE MEDICAL HERBAL, the Chevallier book contains information about native American herbs such as Cimicifuga Racemosa (Squawroot, Black Cohash). THE COMPLETE BOOK OF HERBS by Leslie Bremmness does not contain the comprehensive coverage of medicinal uses, but it does provide much information about medicinal and other uses such as pot pourri and sachet making, paper making, and food preparation.
Best Source there is for medicinal plant information!!.......2000-10-14
From its detailed descriptions of almost all medicinal plants, to its step by step instructions for different preparations, this book has it all!! It tells you where the plant is from even the history behind todays uses. If your interested in healing with plants... this book is for you!
