Disappointed.......2007-07-31
This book is very, very basic. I bought it because I thought it would go into more depth and cover more topics. It skims the surface and nothing more. I was disappointed by it.
Howell Equine Handbook of Tendon and Ligament Injuries.......2006-02-28
Found this book very basis, mostly common knowledge among horsepeople. Would be a good book for the first time horse owner, otherwise not very helpful.
An excellent guide in straightforward language.......2005-09-04
This little book is packed full of all the information you may want to know about horse's tendons and ligaments. As well as delving into injuries as per the book title, it also explains the structure, mechanics and function of the tendons and ligaments in relation to the rest of the anatomy. There are good chapters on common injuries, diagnosis and treatment, as well as prevention and rehabilitation strategies.
There are several case studies, discussion about peripheral topics such as travelling boots and bandages and an excellent chapter devoted to the equine foot, where the relative merits and perils of different hoof angles and shoeing techniques.
Howell Equine Handbook of Tendon and Ligament Injuries.......2004-11-26
This book is an invaluable source of information. The illustrations really added to my understanding of Doctor Schultz's explanations so that I thoroughly understood the issues surrounding my horse's lameness. Because of this I could speak intelligently to my vet and get a better perspective of the injury and its implications. There is no better book on the subject. Robin Levine

Informative Book.......2007-01-12
My husband is a collector. I bought this book for him for Christmas. He has thoroughly enjoyed it and was able to find out what some of his figurines are worth.
He also has bought new figurines at good prices comparing the prices with the book. If you are a collector of figurines in this area, I would recommend this book. (especially if you are an ebayer.

Vacation can be murder...
A peaceful vacation on the charming Scottish island of Iona sounds idyllic to sometime sleuth Dorothy Martin. But Dorothy soon finds that while Iona is charming, her vacation won't be peaceful. Thrown in with a bickering American church tour, she tries to keep her distance. But she can't stay away from murder.
Everybody believes the unpleasant American's fatal fall from a cliff is accidental. Everybody, that is, except Dorothy. The only witness, she saw a small clue the police dismiss, one that makes her believe the death was not an accident. With the police closing the case, Dorothy feels bound to investigate. But it's a choice she may regret...

Christian Bashing.......2004-03-20
Be sure and read this book if you get a perverse pleasure out of Christians being put in the worst possible light. There is an interesting mystery here but it is put in the context of a person who continually makes derogatory comments about Christians by selecting nasty characters who are purported to be Christians. It these were nasty African Americans or Gay/Lesbians this would be totally unacceptable but Christians can be bashed with no reservations.
The author clearly has an anti-Christian agenda that she chooses to push in this manner.
It would have been an interesting mystery without being heightened in any way by bashing Christians.
Brush off your tartans, and roll your RRRs ...........2000-11-29
Dorothy Martin, an American widow with arthritic knees and a penchant for hats, travels with the reader into this cozy mystery set on a dramatic island off the coast of Scotland. Bright flowers, glorious hiking, historic landmarks, mislaid keys, heavenly meals, a canny cat, travel to the dark and mysterious island of Staffa, even a cure for seasickness, factor into a fun and clever whodunit. When one of the members of an acrimonious church group is lost and presumed drowned in Fingal's cave, Dorothy senses more than knows that it is murder. Back at the beautiful island, she puzzles out the numerous motives, as a major storm blows an ill wind across the island. Better batten down the hatches, this one is exciting.
A charming English cozy.......2000-06-20
This is the third in Jeanne M. Dams' delightful English cozy series featuring Dorothy Martin, a retired American schoolteacher living in Sherebury, England. In this adventure, our heroine, en route to a vacation on the Scottish island of Iona, finds herself on a bus with an ill-assorted, bickering American church tour group headed for the same idyllic destination. Dorothy's holiday turns out to be anything but peaceful: An obnoxious American is killed in a fall from a cliff in Fingal's Cave, and Dorothy suspects murder. As if that weren't enough, the island is hit by an extremely violent storm. This is a wonderful series, with a charming sleuth and many likable characters. I recommend beginning with the first novel, "The Body in the Transept," and reading the books in order, so you can become acquainted with Dorothy and her friends.

Dorothy goes on vacation?.......2000-03-28
And what a vacation she has...In this 3rd book, Jeanne Dams takes us to the Isle of Iona in the Scottish Hebrides....a beautiful place, pleaceful, historical, spiritual, and at the stame time... stormy, wild, unyielding and meloncholy. Dorothy sees an accident..BUT, is it an accident? She jumps right in to convince others that it wasn't but no one seems to believe her....she is surrounded by a group of Americans who don't like each other...don't worry, Dorothy to the rescue! Another good story from Jeanne Dams whose descriptions of the island made me feel as if I were there the whole time and had a vacation myself....Margie
Book Description
The Outer Hebrides of Scotland epitomize the evocative beauty and remoteness of island life. The most dramatic of all the Hebrides is Harris, a tiny island formed from the oldest rocks on earth, a breathtaking landscape of soaring mountains, wild lunarlike moors, and vast Caribbean-hued beaches. This is where local crofters weave the legendary Harris Tweed -- reflecting the strength, durability, and integrity of life there.
In Seasons on Harris, David Yeadon, "one of our best travel writers" (Bloomsbury Review) and intrepid chronicler of the "world's most remote regions" (New York Times), captures, through elegant words and line drawings, life on Harris -- the people, their folkways and humor, and their centuries-old Norse and Celtic traditions of crofting and fishing. Here Gaelic is still spoken in its purest form; music and poetry ceilidh evenings flourish in the local pubs; remnants of ancient "black houses" huddle near five-thousand-year-old stone circles; Sabbath Sundays are observed with Calvinistic strictness; and folklore, in the form of mythical creatures and "second sight" abilities, is still both tantalizing and tangible. Yeadon also journeys to Barra, the southernmost of the Hebrides, to the Shiant Islands with author Adam Nicolson, and to the fabled St. Kilda, the most remote of all the Scottish islands -- fifty miles out in the Atlantic, wreathed in legend and mystery.
Harris, while beautiful and beguiling, is also a symbol of the threats to traditional island life everywhere. Through Yeadon's unique book we come to care about these proud islanders, their challenges, and, in particular, the future of their beloved tweed.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating subject, horrible writing.......2007-07-04
David Yeadon's book on his experiences in the Outer Hebrides is unfortunately rather dull. The style is bland, riddled with clichés, and the only truly interesting descriptions we get are in the form of quotations. There are some bright spots; his conversations with local residents are intriguing. I only wish that he would have allowed them to speak for themselves; virtually every interchange with the residents is punctuated with David's insipid observations and framed by his own rather portly ego.
Patience pays off with fine sense of the Hebrides.......2007-04-09
By the end I loved this book, but it is slow going in the beginning, and keeps to a very leisurely pace clear through. Mr. Yeadon does a fine job of describing many of the more notable characters in the area, and a superb job of describing this most beautiful of locations. I had just returned from Scotland when I read this book, and it made me want to hop right back on the plane, regardless of airport hassles, and return. However this is not a book for people looking for a tourist guide. More a meditation on the slow but rich life in the Outer Hebrides. Hence the pace of the book matches the pace of living described within.
Not Just for Scotland Lovers.......2006-07-07
David Yeadon has been composing beautiful hymns to remote places for many years, and here is another in a distinguished list of books he has written. If Seasons on Harris doesn't impel you to plan a trip to Scotland and more specifically the Outer Hebrides, well then, you should consider shopping for a tombstone. I understand the next in his "seasons" series will be on the Beara Peninsula in southern Ireland, and with a name like O'Reilly, I can't wait for that one.

Book Description
In 1954 Paul Strand and his wife Hazel spent three months traversing the rugged island of South Uist, off the west coast of Scotland. Tir a’Mhurain is a collection of photographs that reflects the impressions they gathered during their stay. Juxtaposing people and landscape, Strand’s beautifully sequenced photographs depict the perfect complicity he saw between nature and habitation in this wild terrain. Whether it is a view of the rocks and the sea or a grinning shepherd boy; scudding clouds hanging over seaside houses or the wrinkled face of an old lady framed by a knitted shawl, Strand’s images transcend the ephemeral. This extended portrait captures the essence and complexity of a singular place.
This new edition of Tir a’Mhurain, which includes rare images never before published, is a true masterpiece of photography. In the spirit of the Aperture editions of Strand’s classic works La France de Profil (2001) and Un Paese (1997), this volume celebrates the wholesome beauty of everyday life.

Product Description
A world literature classic. The hilarious story of a ship carrying 50,000 cases of Scotch whiskey capsizing on the coast of one of the Outer Hebrides.
Book Description
In 1773, the great Samuel Johnson–then 63–and his young friend and future biographer, James Boswell, traveled together around the coast of Scotland, each writing his own account of the 83-day journey. Published in one volume, the very different travelogues of this unlikely duo provide a fascinating picture not only of the Scottish Highlands but also of the relationship between two men whose fame would be forever entwined.
Johnson's account contains elegant descriptions and analyses of what was then a remote and rugged land. In contrast, the Scottish-born Boswell's journal of the trip focuses on the psychological landscape of his famously gruff and witty companion, and is part of the material he was already collecting for his future Life of Samuel Johnson, the masterly biography that would make his name.
Read together, the two accounts form both a unique classic of travel writing and a revelation of one of the most famous literary friendships.

Canna: Going Back In Time.......2006-01-09
This is a wonderful book, from a wonderful woman. As my great aunt, our family enjoyed visiting her. Her book is a testament to her life, a I am amazed that she was able to live for so long. Even a few years before she died, she was blind, but was still able to play the piano beautifully. This book will amaze and surprise you. Enjoy reading it!

A Visual Delight.......2003-05-20
This is an exquisite book that far exceeds the imparting of information. It is indeed "fine art ". The photographs, maps, art and quality of paper are elegant. I was pleased to discover many photos that I do not have and wanted from my 2001 visit to Iona, as well as 'those of yore' that bring back memories of the King George V steamer and the unfinished abbey in 1954, my first visit. It represents a superb job of assembling a variety of images and perspectives. This is more than a tourist guide of landmarks and religious history as it also includes the natural beauty of birds, flowers and sea creatures, and life on the island. Even the inside cover is an artistic delight! Having already purchased Mr. de Watteville's STAFFA, I was especially eager to have this work. With 123 pages it is an excellent value, despite exchange rate and postage, because of its quality. Family and friends not only pick it up to peruse, but become engrossed in the text as well. This book is indeed a tribute to the spectacular isle of Iona.

Great Love and Faith shown in the life of John Paton.......1998-12-16
John Paton a Psalm Singing reformed Christian, was a native of Scotland that became a missionary to the cannibals of the South Pacific in the 1800's. Mr. Paton shines with the grace of his Lord by risking his life over and over again for people that did not want him. This man truly believed in the sovereignty of God.. A memorable moment in the book was when Mr. Paton challenged the witch doctors, to kill him with their magic (this reminded me of Elijah's challenge to the prophets of Baal in I Kings 18). Mr. Paton spent his whole life learning their language and translating the Bible for them. Many other missionaries lost their lives on the Islands but by God's Grace Mr. Paton lived to see the fruits of his labors. I highly recommend this book to you and pray that more men and women like John Paton will be raised up among us.
