A Must Have.......2007-06-12
I am planning on traveling to Italy with my dog this summer and this book is so helpful it has answered all of my questions about everything!!! If you are thinking about taking your pet with you when you travel then this book is for is for you.
Review: Globetrotting Pets: An International Guide.......2003-05-13
With few exceptions involving kennels and leashes, most of the advice in this well-written book applies to kids and pets: plan ahead, consider the needs of both the child/pet and the parent/owner, avoid bad water and the like. That said, I think I could make a credible argument that the parts about kennels and leashes wouldn't be the worst thing for some parents to read over either.
But I am doing a disservice to this book trying to be witty. I'll stop and suggest that if you are considering traveling or moving internationally with your pet, this 416-page paperback book will provide you with the information and resources you will need to make the experience safe and enjoyable for you and your pet. Just as I advise not to depart without thinking through the things you need to do to ensure a good trip for your young ones, I suggest you work through this book for your and your pet's sake.
There are three sections to this book, each useful for different parts of your travel planning:
--Things to consider when deciding whether to take your pet with you;
--Practicalities on international pet travel, such as airline regulations, shipping containers, vaccinations, food, things to pack, etc.;
--Specific country-by-country information on bringing along your pet, with phone, FAX, email and web site information for literally everywhere (Afghanistan, North Korea, Palau as well as the UK, Canada and other slightly more common destinations).

Explores the relationships of women with their gardens.......2005-04-12
In Garden Voices: Stories Of Women And Their Gardens is a compendium of twelve stories in which Carolyn Rap explores the relationships of women with their gardens, discovering that gardens can grow a lot more than flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Susan's garden led her from breast cancer back to health. Carol finds inspiration for her watercolors. Francie's garden transports her imagination to Elizabethan England. Judy's garden nourishes her friendships. Nancy's garden (which she shares with her husband) is an ongoing experiment to learn if men and women can find common ground. Garden Voices is especially commended to the attention of gardening enthusiasts as well as Women's Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
Wonderful and Inspiring.......2005-04-01
My book group chose this book and it led to a rich discussion of what gardens mean in each of our lives. It is extremely well-written and each reader related to a different story. Our group usually reads fiction, and this book offered the opportunity for a refreshing change.
Digging In The Dirt.......2005-04-01

What a great gift for myself, for my friends.

Book Description
There has been a long tradition of interest in philosophy in the Islamic world, and it is the aim of these volumes to represent the lives of some of the major thinkers within this tradition. The notion of philosophy has been interpreted broadly to include a large number of intellectuals who were interested in conceptual issues that either directly relate to philosophy or form part of the background of Islamic philosophy as a whole. Included are details about the lives of significant legal thinkers, theologians, political thinkers and even geographers where their lives are relevant indicators of the progress of philosophy in the Islamic world. The Dictionary represents a landmark achievement in the understanding of Islamic philosophy, at a time when such understanding is needed as never before. It is set to become an indispensable reference work for students of Islamic and comparative philosophy.
Customer Reviews:
Islamic Philosophers.......2006-11-21
This Dictionary is in the English language. It"contains entries on approximately 300 important [deceased] thinkers and key concepts in Islamic philosophy," and written by 38 different scholars. The average entry is about 500 words long; the shorter ones only half of that. Following is a list of all entries under certain letters. From the following listing, hopefully you can better judge how extensive other entries may be. For example: "H": Haci Pasha, Hadith, Hairi, al-Hallaj, al-Hamadani, al-Hamadhani, Hamka, al-Harawi, Harputi, Hayreddin, Hayrullah Efendi, al-Helmy, Hidaji, Hikma, Hili, al-Hindi, Hisham al-Hakam, Hocazade Muslihuddin Mustafa, Hudayi, al-Hudhayl, Taha Husayn, Husayni. If "J" is your favorite letter: Jabr, Jahiliya, al-Jahiz, Jahm ibn Safwan, al-Jawaliqi, al-Jilani, al-Jili, Jilwa, al-Junayd, Junpuri, a-Jurjani, Juwayni. If Vanna White selected the letter "T": Tabari, Tabatabaii, Taftazani, Tahawi, Tahtawi, Taskopruzade, Tawhidi, Topcu, Transmission, Tusi. Each entry has a short "bibliography" of books written by the notable, and frequently a "further reading" of related articles. Each entry is written by a currently living "scholar" [at least in 2005 C.E.] at some university or hopefully prestigious institution. Based upon the contributors' names, about two-thirds appear to be Arabic, and about two-thirds of them are teaching at some college in Turkey, the U.K, or the U.S.(eight scholars stateside). Almost a third of all entries were written by Oliver Leaman at the Univ. of Kentucky, USA, who: "writes on Islamic philosophy", and who also wrote the 8-page "Introduction", and the 8-page entry on: "Epistemology in Islamic Philosophy", and the 19-page article on "Modern Islamic Philosophy." The writing styles are scholarly yet readily understandable; brief but interesting; concise yet educational.

Book Description
The increasing interest in Islam and Islamic culture during the last century and the early part of this century created a demand for an encyclopaedic work on Islam. For the first time in history a truly international team of scholars began working on one single project. This resulted in The Encyclopaedia of Islam, published in three editions in English, German and French. The Encyclopaedia of Islam remains to this day the only complete encyclopaedic work on Islam. Due to its tremendous success these editions soon went out of print and became valuable collectors' items. Some years later, the publisher decided to start a New Edition, which is now well over halfway to completion. In view of the broad scope of the New Edition and the years needed to complete it, E.J. Brill's First Edition is now available in paperback to meet the immediate needs of scholars, students of Islam, librarians, and even government institutions, in fact, anyone interested in Islam and its rich culture. The paperback First Edition is intended to fill a gap at a very low price. The First Edition is a true mine of information, much of which is not yet available in the New Edition. The value of the First Edition (as well as the New Edition) is recognized worldwide and remains undisputed. In more than 9,000 alphabetically arranged articles, varying in length from 50 to 50,000 words, the whole range of Islamic culture, from religion and literature to the lives of famous Muslims, is treated by some of the world's most famous scholars of the twentieth century. The First Encyclopaedia of Islam was originally published between 1913 and 1936 as The Encyclopaedia of Islam: A Dictionary of the Geography, Ethnography and Biography of the Muhammadan Peoples in four volumes and one supplement volume.

Book Description
The Qur'ān is the primary religious text for one-sixth of the world's population. Understood by Muslims to contain God's own words, it has been an object of reverence and of intense study for centuries. The thousands of volumes that Muslim scholars have devoted to qur'ānic interpretation and to the linguistic, rhetorical and narrative analysis of the text are sufficient to create entire libraries of qur'ānic studies.
Drawing upon a rich scholarly heritage, Brill's Encyclopaedia of the Qur'ān (EQ) combines alphabetically-arranged articles about the contents of the Qur'ān. It is an encyclopaedic dictionary of qur'ānic terms, concepts, personalities, place names, cultural history and exegesis extended with essays on the most important themes and subjects within qur'ānic studies. With nearly 1000 entries in 5 volumes, the EQ is the first comprehensive, multi-volume reference work on the Qur'ān to appear in a Western language.
Cross-referencing and indices
This final volume of the EQ contains indices of transliterated terms, of qur'ānic references and of the authors and exegetes cited in the entries and essays.
Fully international work
The EQ is a fully international work supported by an international board of advisors. Scholars from many nations have written articles for the encyclopaedia.

Various aspects of Qur'an: Serious, Responsible, yet Innovative, & Accessible.......2006-10-30
"The need for a large-scale reference text that covers the various aspects of their scripture in a serious and responsible yet innovative and broadly accessible way is an obvious one, and is superbly well served by this fine encyclopaedia." Lawrence Conrad.
"The Qur'an is a text, a literary text, and the only way to understand, explain, and analyze it is through a literary approach. This is an essential theological issue." Nasr H. Abu Zayd
The Holy Qur'an:
The Qur'an, also spelled Koran is the "holy book of Islam, regarded by believers as the true word of God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. In its written form it is accepted as the earthly reproduction of an uncreated and eternal heavenly original, according to the general view referred to in the Qur'an itself as 'the well-preserved tablet' (al-lawh al-mahfuz*; Sura 85:22)." Encyclopædia Britannica
The Qur'an (literally, 'Recitation') is believed to be the word, or speech, of God delivered to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. The Qur'anic text revealed to Muhammad is considered to be an earthly manifestation of the eternal and uncreated original in heaven, a parallel to the Ten Commandments of Judaism. Divided into 114 chapters (surahs) of diverse subjects and varying length, is the fundamental source of Islamic teaching. The early Meccan surahs, are concerned mostly with moral, and spiritual teachings and warnings about the last Day (of Judgment.) The later surahs revealed at Medina are concerned mainly with social legislation and the politico-moral principles for constituting and ordering the community.
A Qur'an For Muslims:
Today, Muslims constitute about a sixth of the world's population, only second to Christians, numbering about one billion inhabitant. The great majority of Muslims do neither read nor understand Arabic, the language of the Qur'an, depriving them of a first hand evaluation of the source of their own faith. Encyclopaedia of the Holy Qur'an stresses that "Reading, reciting and learning of the Qur'ân by heart are not the ways of real approach to it. By approach we mean that we should understand what the Qur'ân says to us, what message it conveys to us, and what demand it makes from us."
Islamic Thought:
Islamic teachings, law, and thinking in general are based upon four sources, or fundamental principles : a. the Qur'an, b. the Prophet's Islamic and social traditions (sunnah), c. Islamic consensus (ijma' ), and d. individual scholarship (ijtihad). For Muslims, the Qur'an is the uncreated word of God, that contains the ultimate truth, and whatever is revealed in it has been the object of meditation and explanation through the centuries. Thus, since the nineth century, commentators on the Qur'an have been by far the most important witnesses for Islamic 'mythology.' They relied heavily on Jewish tradition, and wove into their explanations various strands of ancient oriental lore and Persian fables. Jewish converts, brought much of their Jewish literature (Isra'iliyat) into Islamic tradition. Later on, the mystics' commentaries expressed some Apophatic (Mystic), dualistic Gnostic views, and Hellenistic concepts (idea of the Perfect Man, personified in Muhammad) was to gain greatest prominence. Commentaries written in the border areas of Islamic countries now and then accepted a few popular traditions from their respective areas; however, the formative period was finished quite early.
Modern Islamic Scholarship:
The plight of Nasr Abu Zayd, an unassuming Egyptian professor of Arabic who sits on the encyclopedia's advisory board, illustrates the difficulties facing Muslim scholars trying to reinterpret their tradition. For more than a century there have been public figures in the Islamic world who have attempted the revisionist study of the Qur'an and Islamic history, the recently exiled Egyptian professor Nasr Abu Zayd is not unique. Perhaps Abu Zayd's most famous predecessor was the prominent Egyptian government minister, university professor, and writer Taha Hussein. A determined modernist, Hussein in the early 1920's devoted himself to the study of pre-Islamic Arabian poetry and ended up concluding that much of that body of work had been fabricated well after the establishment of Islam in order to lend outside support to Qur'anic mythology. A more recent example is the Iranian journalist and diplomat Ali Dashti, who in his Twenty-Three Years: A Study of the Prophetic Career of Mohammed, 1985, repeatedly took his fellow Muslims to task for not questioning the traditional accounts of Muhammad's life, much of which he called "myth-making and miracle-mongering."
Encyclopedia of the Qur'an:
Brill's Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an is the first comprehensive reference work on the Qur'an to appear in any Western language. It assembles an encyclopaedic dictionary of Qur'anic terms, concepts, personalities, place names, cultural history and exegesis with essays on the most important themes and subjects within Qur'anic studies, integrating alphabetically-arranged entries of articles about the contents of the Qur'an. With some thousand entries in five volumes. This Encyclopedia is a genuine collaborative enterprise, carried out by Muslims and non-Muslims alike; its articles present multiple approaches to the interpretation of the Qu'ran, some of which are likely to challenge traditional Islamic views. The time may be less ripe for a revisionist study of the Qur'an, but decidedly necessary in clearing moderate Islamic Fiqhe from allusion of violence. The articles, that widely range in length, discuss the themes found in the Qur'an. Both Muslim and non-Muslim approaches to the holy text are featured, and extensive reference is made to the classical, and contemporary Islamic exegetical tradition. The choice of English text, helps to make the Encyclopaedia accessible to non Arabic-reading specialists.
Contributing Writers:
Edited by Jane McAuliffe, of Georgetown University, the Encyclopaedia relies mostly on U.S. authors, together with other Westerners and Middle Eastern contributors. Over 200 scholars from around the world have contributed the approximately 1,000 articles in these five volumes. Their willingness to contribute their range of expertise has made the work both a summative enterprise and one which highlights potential future directions of Qur'anic studies. The contributing writers, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, including the progressive Egyptian Scholar Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd. Professor Abu Zayd studies modern Islamic thought by critically analyzing classical and contemporary Islamic discourse in the field of theology, philosophy, law, politics and humanism. The aim of his research is to suggest a theory of hermeneutics that might enable Muslims to build a bridge between their tradition and the modern world.
General Editor:
Georgetown University professor Jane McAuliffe, recently published the fifth, concluding volume of the Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an (Brill, 2001-2006). McAuliffe served as the general editor of the collection, multi-volume reference work on the Muslim scripture to appear in a Western language. The editor takes up a methodology of what she calls "two parallel conversations" about the Qur'an, between Muslim and non-Muslim scholarship on the holy book, which existed in separate sources, one pious, the other inquisitive; she also acknowledges that some authors found her concept of the project tainted and chose to stay away from it. Muslim critic S. Parvez Manzoor, in a cautionary preview, stated, that "The Orientalist enterprise of Qur'anic studies, whatever its other merits and services, was a project born of spite, bred in frustration and nourished by vengeance: ... the vengeance of the 'orthodox' against the 'nonconformist.' "
An Excellent Collection of Current Scholarship in Islamics.......2001-11-15
The Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an represents the most current knowledge available regarding Islam and Qur'anic Studies. Jane Dammen Mcauliffe has done an excellent job compiling contributions from an impressive list of scholars. Andrew Rippin, G.R. Hawting, Patricia Crone, Herbert Berg, Bowering, Beatrice Greundler, and a host of others all weigh in on issues ranging from the Chronology of the Qur'an to its Compilation; and from Exegetical issues to the controversial questions of the Origins of the Qur'an. Excellent Scholarship marks the first volume's entries on the topics of Arabic Scripts, Language, and Paleography. It draws on recent research and scholarship, including the "paper grave" of manuscripts discovered in Sana'a Yemen which are currently being analyzed by German Professor Gerhard Puin. This first available volume covers topics from "A" through "D", and makes many references to future entries in the volumes which are to follow. While the entries are based on thorough research and academic study, several of the conclusions and observations will be quite controversial in the Muslim community, particularly those which call into question the reliability of Muslim Literary Traditions, and those which are damaging to the traditional understandings of the nature of the Qur'an as a monolithic, unevolved (or even uncreated) source of Divine Revelation. This volume, and those which follow, are certain to establish themselves as instant classics in the libraries of scholars and academic students of Islam around the world.
