5 out of 5 stars Everything for the beginner.......2007-03-16

For the basics on Freshwater Stingrays this book is a great introduction into their care. For those interested in Rays for the first time this booke is an excellent primer for further investigation into Ray keeping. An excellent beginners book.

5 out of 5 stars The info you need is here.......2006-08-16

Great book. Lots of info on feeding, caring and general stingray keeping.
it's a nice little book that says the same than other more expensive similar books.

5 out of 5 stars A little disorganized but it's all there!.......2004-11-11

The book jumps around a bit. I think that the information could have been organized a little better but it's all there nonetheless.

Great information! For the price you can't go wrong. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-10-17

This is a great book if you are going to buy or if you have
a stingray. As it says in the book, you should have an aquarium
sized 4 feet by 2 feet for the smallest of rays. A+ Book.

5 out of 5 stars Full Title Says It All.......2001-03-14

The title of this book says it all. Freshwater stingrays need more care and attention than most other freshwater fishes. This book covers the precautions regarding usage of heaters (esp. submersible), pH, diet, disease, etc. and watch out for their stings (spines), breeding, etc. It's a good collection in a small book. Some readers may find information that are easily found in other beginner fish books like filtration, etc, but all information are well-presented. I have been searching information for freshwater rays and compare with the info in this book, there are some things that I had not known or realize before, for example, regarding the sensitivity of the china rays and also regarding selection---avoid rays showing "death curl" and undernourishment.... which is the first step in starting the hobby.

Anyone thinking of keeping freshwater stingrays should read this book first as these fishes needs much care and attention and also to avoid making expensive mistakes.

Book Description

In the rivers and lakes of tropical South America lives a group of fishes that are more often associated with the sea - stingrays. Although in their natural habitat they are feared much more than the piranhas, on account of their dangerous poisonous spines, all over the world increasing numbers of enthusiastic aquarists are succumbing to the fascination of these unique creatures.

Dr Richard Ross, a scientist at the Santa Barbara Zoo in America, has for a long time been keeping these fishes in the display aquaria at the zoo, and here publishes the vast store of knowledge derived from this experience. The requirements of these rays, as regards successful maintenance and breeding, are revealed in detail for the first time in the literature. The reader will learn all about the requisite tank size, how to set up an aquarium for rays, the correct water parameters, and breeding. The successful diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect rays is also covered in detail. In addition the different species groups and their pecularities are discussed.

The extremely detailed text is illustrated with more than 80 unique photos, making this an indispensable book for anyone who wishes to know more about these interesting creatures or who is keeping - or planning to keep - stingrays in an aquarium.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable Books for the Aquarist.......2007-01-20

All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about the beautiful Freshwater Stingrays or some other species of fish they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated. There is not a lot of literature on Freshwater Stingrays so this book is invaluable.

They do not deal with the basics of fish keeping, there are many and varied books that do that. They are in the main a fish identification encyclopaedia and not a lot more. But for those aquarists who are particularly interested in a single species they are indispensable.

3 out of 5 stars Great info to raykeepers.......2006-08-16

I love this book. It's colorful and looks good. Information is well presented and it turns out to be a nice read. I read it sometimes while taking dinner.

My only complain is it has 99% the same info found in another book by the same author.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for raykeepers.......2004-09-13

As with any Aqualog book this is a must have. I ordered this book as soon as I bought my stingray. If I had not , my ray would have died, as I was given poor information from the fish shop. This book gives much needed details about feeding, disease , tank size etc. Before buying a ray you really need to know what you are getting into. I spend $40 a month to feed one ray and he is quickly outgrowing a 125 gallon tank!
Aqualog books cost more than others but you TRULY get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 stars Ross does it again.......2000-07-17

Until Dr. Ross started publishing there was a serious shortage of information available for owners of freshwater stingrays. This book is great! It covers everything from the full grown size of South American rays to care of a ray and care of yourself if you get stung by your ray.

This book also helps dispel the myth that all rays are hard to care for. With clear, concise instructions on what a ray needs to thrive, this book should be the second that any ray enthusiast buys ("Freshwater Stingrays : Everything About Purchase, Care, Feeding, and Aquarium Design" by Ross is the first).

Buy these books BEFORE you buy a ray, if possible. Some rays get fairly big and it's good to know what you are getting yourself into.

    Description:
Within the past decade, reproductive and health disorders have been reported to occur in unique populations of Atlantic stingrays (Dasyatis sabina) inhabiting certain components of Florida's St. Johns River. Since these irregularities are consistent with the alleged effects of organochlorine (OC) contaminant exposure in other Florida wildlife, the goal of this study was to examine possible associations between OC concentrations and reproduction and/or immune function in stingrays from this river system. Liver concentrations of 30 OC pesticides/pesticide metabolites and total polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured and compared in D. sabina collected from four central Florida lakes of the St. Johns River: Lake George, Lake Harney, Lake Jesup, and Lake Monroe. Reproductive biology, serum testosterone and 17@b-estradiol concentrations, and circulating white blood cell counts were examined and compared in stingrays from lakes that were determined to contain low (Lake George), intermediate (Lake Monroe), and high (Lake Jesup) levels of pesticide contamination, based on the results of liver OC assessments. Successful breeding occurred in Lake Jesup stingrays, indicating that the degree of OC accumulation in these animals is not high enough to cause reproductive impairment. However, elevated serum steroid concentrations and white blood cell counts were observed in Lake Jesup stingrays, suggesting that endocrine and immune function may be altered in these animals due to OC exposure and/or other, as yet unknown, ecological factors. Inconsistencies in the reproductive success of Lake Monroe stingrays were observed, confirming earlier reports of reproductive complications in this sub-population. Based on these findings, previous occurrences of reproductive failure in St. Johns River stingrays may be due to environmental factors other than OC exposure.

Collecting contributions from 100 distinguished horticulturists, the handsome and lavishly illustrated American Horticultural Society A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is a truly definitive gardening reference. With its 1,092 tiny-print pages, this may not be the book to tuck into your pocket as you weed and mulch, but what this encyclopedia lacks in portability, it certainly makes up for in scope. Hardy and tender plants, heirloom varieties and the latest hybrids--they're all accounted for here, with growing tips and background information about native habitats and ornamental features. You'll also find a fascinating section about botany, as well as information about basic gardening techniques such as mulching, staking, pruning, propagating, and protecting plants for winter. But the encyclopedia's main attraction is the individual plant entries--more than 15,000 of them, embellished with 6,000 full-color photographs and illustrations. From the visual glossary of leaves to the map of growing regions, The American Horticultural Society A-Z of Garden Plants provides an unsurpassed wealth of botanical information, making it the yardstick by which all other gardening references must be measured.

            Book Description

The most comprehensive, detailed, and lavishly illustrated guide to garden plants ever published, first published in 1997, has now been completely revised to include nearly 250 new plants and photos. The AHS A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is an essential reference for all gardeners, from novices to experts.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any gardener.......2007-07-15

I had been admiring this book at my local library for quite a while and was surprised to see it offered through Amazon at a great price. This book has wonderful photos of each plant (and species) as well as detailed information, which makes identifying plants so much easier than with any other gardening book out there. If there is one draw back, it would have to be the weight. With over 1100 pages, it is not a book to carry around the garden.

5 out of 5 stars Great housewarming gift!.......2007-03-24

This book works best if paired with The American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers. Each book stands on it's own but the two together give total information and abundant photos. I bought one set for new homeowners about to plan their first yard and bought another set for myself. Even after gardening for many years, these books provide answers to questions that come up every gardening season.
The books are substantial in weight as well as information.

This book has great pictures and covers any type of flower you can dream up in it's 700 or so pages. The book is broken up into sections (i.e. Shrubs, tulips, etc.). A great value here too, it costs $60 in any other book store. The book also tells you what seasons each type of flower grows in.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect garden lover's reference book.......2007-01-13

This is a killer book. You can look up characteristics of a specific plant or research what to plant for a particular area. I use this book constantly, and also just sit down to look through it for fun. Everything has a picture, which I think really sets this book apart. It's big and heavy, but actually makes a great "coffee table book."

            5 out of 5 stars wonderful book!.......2007-03-22

I've been slowly entering gardening as a serious hobby and this book was perfect for me. Whether you've never gardened before or have done it for years, this book is a wealth of valuable information. I spent hours reading it! Gorgeous photographs and easy to understand intructions and information -- this book has become an indispensable reference for me.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful Content but Book Binding is Substandard.......2007-01-01

The information and photographs get a 5-star Rating. The binding (0 stars) fell apart the second time I opened the book.

4 out of 5 stars Not a General Reference Book.......2006-06-04

I was a little disappointed with this book because I thought it would have more information on specific plants. It gives very little info on the specific plants and focuses on the design aspects. As a novice gardener, this book has not been very helpful to me. Don't buy it if you want a general reference guide.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for growing everything under the sun!.......2005-09-05

This book covers almost everything including how to grow Blackberries and grapes which caught my attention and how to take care of cuttings, which I had never done before and had all sorts of doubts about. Thanks to this wonderful jewel, my back yard is now filled with all sorts of exotic flowers and plants that I have grown from cuttings off of other plants and flowers in only a few short weeks.

My husband bought me a greenhouse in February 05 so I thought this book would be perfect for us. We have tripled our flowers and plants by using this book. Now the back yard is half filled and the greenhouse is totally filled thanks to this book! Total cost was only for the soil and pots that we needed, everything else was all cuttings placed in water or placed directly in the soil until rooted.

This book is very expensive but worth it's weight in gold!
            I love it!

Creating a Garden This is a simple guide to garden planning by John Brooks, the world-renowned landscape designer. Choice of plants in relation to garden style, scale, and proportion, and use of color and texture are all explained and illustrated with a host of gardens. Extensive lists suggest plants for particular sites.

The Plant Catalog Organized in a unique, easy-to-use format, this section is arranged by plant type, size, season of interest, and color of flower or foliage. Over 4,000 plants are individually described, each with its own full-color photograph, symbols indicating cultivation requirements, hardiness zone numbers, and, for trees and shrubs, a scale drawing of mature size and shape.

The Plant Dictionary a complete A-Z guide to more than 8,000 plants, this section also functions as an index to the encyclopedia. It describes every genus in the book and provides information about thousands of other recommended plants.

Plus a complete index of over 2,500 common names for easy cross-reference and a glossary of straightforward definitions of the technical terms used in this book.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous research book.......2000-02-05

as a l;andscape designer, this book shows not only when plants flower, their silouhette and height, but the width, which no other resource book gives. I use it for all my design classes and my students love how clear and precise everything is. Wonderful garden book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent source for plant selection, color categorization.......1999-01-19

I love this book because it is so comprehensive and very useful for planning a new garden. Plants are grouped by season and color. Very helpful for landscaping. Shapes sizes etc are all very accessible.

                  5 out of 5 stars 8000 plant descriptions! 4000 photos! A bargain at $50........1996-08-07

In one volume, the AHS Encyclopedia manages to cover 8000 plant varieties, 4000 of them with color photos. This is by far the best way of getting a comprehensive directory of garden plants at a reasonable price. For each plant, it gives basic information such as size, color, season of bloom, cold tolerance, etc. and often considerably more information about cultural conditions, propagation, and the like.

It is not perfect. For instance, its information on shade, water, and pH requirements is sketchy and sometimes conflicts with other sources I've consulted. But it is very good.

In all, this is a far better deal than getting multiple volumes of the Taylor's Guides, although for those who want more information the RHS Dictionary ($800) is more complete and those who want more photos of each plant the Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix series (Random House) is richer.

Perhaps someday soon the RHS Dictionary and the AHS Encyclopedia (which is based on the RHS Encyclopedia) will be available in CD-ROM. Until then, this paper volume has far broader coverage than any CD-ROM collection I've seen so far.
