This old-fashioned tale about one little snowplow's determination in the face of a small-town blizzard has all the charm and moral grit of The Little Engine That Could. This isn't surprising, considering that Caldecott Medal-winning author Virginia Lee Burton (The Little House) specializes in bringing the inanimate to life with endearing illustrations and stories of fortitude and vulnerability. Katy, a red crawler tractor, "could do a lot of things," Burton explains early on. In the summer she is a bulldozer, helping to build and repair roads in the city of Geoppolis. In the winter, she turns into a snowplow, waiting and waiting for her chance to be useful. Most of the winters, though, the snowfalls are mild and the town doesn't need Katy. But when the big one finally hits, the town is buried in page after page of powder. The power lines are down. The doctor can't get his patient to the hospital. The fire department can't reach a burning house! "Everyone and everything was stopped but... KATY!" Suddenly, the entire community is dependent on one little snowplow. Children love witnessing Katy's shining moment of glory and will inevitably admire her "chug, chug, chug" endurance. (Ages 4 and older) --Gail Hudson
Customer Reviews:
a story for generations ..........2007-02-09
As a little girl this was my favorite book. My parents read it to me over and over. My mom saved it all these years and recently first read it to my 3 1/2 yr old nephew. He now shares my love of this story and asks Grandpa to read it to him all the time.
The story is very well written and illustrations are wonderful for little kids to follow along with.
Katy Will Not Stop!.......2006-11-24
Katy is a municipal snow plow serving a small village who is hit by a massive snow storm. Adults who think it silly that machines are made to behave like people in picture books should remember the little engine that could. Katy has no doubt that she can tackle any snow, and when a massive snow storm hits, she is called to duty. The firemen, the police, the doctors, the postmaster, and others all cry out for help from Katy. When Katy began to tire, she pressed on - she wouldn't stop. She is the heroine who saves the village.
What makes this book more than interesting is that the author is also the illustrator, which means that there is thought behind these illustrations that they should intertwine with the dramatic plot of the text. Each illustration shows the trails plowed through the snow by Katy. With each progressive illustration, the trails become more numerous and complex to where they begin to look like maps. These illustrations partner nicley with the text to produce an emerging cadence in the dialogue.
Our favorite Virginia Lee Burton Book!.......2006-03-29
We love this book, it's our absolute favorite Virginia Lee Burton book. My children always seem inspired and excited by the story of the snow plow that nothing could stop!
As always, her illustrations are marvelous (and with the more modern bright colors, it's nice to let your children enjoy the black and white palette), and the story of not giving up is a great message for children. It also makes those winter days when it seems like you'll never get out a little more hopeful.
Classic children's tale.......2006-03-16
This is of course by the same author as "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel," and just as delightful. Appeals to girls and boys alike, and as your child grows, (s)he will find more and more in the book -- maps of the town, buildings' names, names of machine parts, and more. Strongly recommended, even for those unfamiliar with "Mike Mulligan."
Not Burton's Best - a review of "Katy and the Big Snow".......2006-01-25
I have to agree with the other 3-Star Reviewer. This is not one of Burton's best books. My children (boy and girl; almost 4 and 6) didn't care much for it. There is none of the usual clamoring for another read.
And as the other Reviewer noted, there is a lack of 'personification' for Katy. Her character just doesn't seem as rich as some of Ms. Burton's other equipment (or buildings-lol).
And plowing, followed by more plowing, is just not all that interesting even if it is helping a doctor and a mailman.
Three Stars. If you already have Ms. Burton's other books and like them, take a chance on this book. But if you are looking for a Burton-first story, try another like "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" or even "The Little House."

Great Book.......2003-04-09
Fantastic reference. Great details and info. I wish he would write one on International Harvester.
A Good Reference for any machinery enthusiast........2001-03-28
I foung this book to be a very good reference for Allis Chamblers construction equiptment. While it contains little information on the AC farm tractors, this book covers nearly all of their construction equiptment. There are individual chapters for each type of equiptment, witha thoughle history of each modle. At the end of each chapter there are detailed specification sheets, as well as an apendix of serial numbers and years, so you can pinpoint your tractor's date of manufacture. The book goes gives a good history of the original company, as well as somewhat of a history of the major companies that AC bought, such as BUDA. The book also contains information on models of equiptment continued on into Fiat-Allis, such as the FA HD-31. The book covers all eqiptment, from the first early Monarch crawlers, all the way up to the giagantic HD-41's. There are chapters on industrial eqipyment, such as forklifts, and small crawlers, also inclued. If this author were to write another book like this, I would be first in line to buy it.

According to editor Steve Bender, southern gardeners are conservative, traditional but a bit eccentric in their plant choices (meaning they'll grow whatever Daddy grew, even if it's spotted or carnivorous), and dedicated (as they have to be to continue to weed and mow through the summer). This book celebrates the uniqueness of the southern garden. It's remarkably well organized, with colored page edges demarcating the different sections, the largest of which is the alphabetized plant encyclopedia in the middle. The best part of the book, however, may be the substantial section titled "Plant Selection Guide," which consists of a series of illustrated lists: "Fragrant Plants," "Plants that Attract Butterflies," "Plants Easy to Propagate," "Plants That Tolerate Drought," etc. With its lay-flat binding and excellent index, it's sure to be a favorite garden reference for quite a few gardeners, southern or otherwise.
Customer Reviews:
Must-have for Landscape Architects (especially students).......2002-04-18
This is the most complete resource I have found, covering annuals and perennials, trees and shrubs, grasses and ferns, all in one easy-to-handle volume. Most plant books are huge, heavy hardbacks difficult to carry in a backpack and only address one subject. This is my bible for planting design, as the sections in the front of the book on "Plants for Shade", "Drought-Tolerant Plants", etc. are very helpful in reminding me what plants to use where. However, this book might not be very helpful to amateur gardeners whose knowledge of plants may be limited, as it does not offer suggestions of attractive and successful plant combinations. Also, I wish that Southern Living would publish an updated addition with more recent varieties of plants.
Landscape Architect loves it.......1999-12-15
I have many garden books, but none is as complete for southern gardeners. This book is more than just an overview. It does a great job of giving the different characteristics of the many varieties of each plant listing. Very up to date. Useful for professionals and weekend gardeners.
Too Educational.......1998-12-29
I agree with the other reviews, that the author is very competent in his knowledge of plants. I found the format somewhat like a textbook, with the pictures separate from the plant descriptions a somewhat displeasing feature. Statements are too brief and too technical to be really beneficial to a new gardner. Also use of zones was infrequent and almost nonexistent. I find that a must in choosing plant material.
Plants for Southern Gardeners I've seen nowhere else!.......1998-11-19
This is a very useful book for finding information on plants available to Southern gardeners that I can't find in any of my other gardening resources.
It's a Winner!!.......1998-08-24
First of all, anything by Steve Bender has got to be good. This man knows the art of southern gardening like the back of his hand and is my favorite writer along with Felding. As a long time southern gardener I can tell all new comers to the south to get this book and bypass all the mistakes usually made down here. You won't be sorry and it will become a bible of gardening for you...Deb
Customer Reviews:
Excellent source book.......2005-08-21
Being new to the southeast and landscaping a new construction house, I needed some help in figuring out what will work and how to put all of the right elements together. This book served both purposes very well.
usefull book.......2000-12-17
I studied this book before landscaping our new home. I found my self referring to it over and over while designing gardens and buying plants. The book is comprehensive and practical. The topical organization is a great aid in developing ideas for design. I have several books of similar subject matter and this one is the best.
Dream Book with realistic suggestions.......2000-06-08
Okay, so I may not be able to go out and create my garden exactly like the picture shows, but it is inspiring to pick and choose from amongst the styles and get some pointers on partnered plants and garden focus so I'm not reinventing the garden hose, I mean wheel. Great book for any homeowner who needs a little "it can be done" therapy after working hard and not being happy with the results on their own. I'm content with a little bit of heaven in my own back yard and this book helped tremedously.
Inspiring!.......2000-05-23
As a gardener just venturing into landscaping, I found the brand-new SOUTHERN LIVING LANDSCAPE BOOK inspiring and encouraging. It is packed with beautiful color photos and ideas for creating a wonderful home landscape. Granted, a few ideas are beyond my budget (not to mention, it would take me many, many years to achieve those results!), but lots of the plans have elements that anyone can appropriate.
The book is divided into eight sections. "Gardens of the South" showcases stunning gardens from Florida to Texas. Once I finished drooling over those photos, I found "Planning Your Garden" a good guide to planning my own landscape. Among other subjects, it addresses principles of design, division of space, how to chart a landscape, and dealing with slopes. Each page is beautifully illustrated with color photos.
Section three, "Designing with Structures," deals with arbors, gazebos, decks, courtyards, paths, fences, and outside storage. It also contains a lengthy discussion of pools and other water features. There are no step-by-step plans, just lots of photos and creative ideas. (See my comments on Part Six.)
"Designing with Plants" packs a lot of color into a brief 83 pages. It does a nice job of touching on different subjects such as accent plants, choosing trees for their shape, attracting wildlife, choosing a winter garden, etc.
Look in part five, "Finishing Touches," for ideas for containers, birdbaths, furniture, and garden art. An interesting section on lighting discusses the different uses of light in the landscape-backlighting, sidelighting, "moonlighting," shadowing, grazing, and uplighting.
Part six, "Materials and Techniques," has nice tips and clear illustrations for building decks, fences, arbors, raised beds, steps, etc. (Again, no measured plans.) It also serves up good advice for building paths of various materials, pouring a concrete slab, and installing a watering system.
Part Seven, "Garden Makeovers," is one of my favorite sections of the book. The wonderful before and after photos illustrate how homeowners have solved their landscaping problems. The well-written text gives added detail about the changes and how they worked.
This beautiful book is intended as a companion volume to the SOUTHERN LIVING GARDEN BOOK. I highly recommend it!
The Bible of Landscape Design Ideas.......2000-04-07
The book is an excellent starting point for both beginners and intermediate landscapers and gardeners. I loved the beautiful illustrations and tips that help anyone with a landscaping mental block break through. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who is searching for a fresh idea in color and patterns. This book makes an excellent gift for any gardener or outdoor lover!

Indispensable!.......2007-10-08
This book is an indispensable resource, both for my work answering homeowner gardening questions and for my own gardening interests. The plant descriptions are easy to find (both common and Latin names are in the index) and a breeze to understand. This is a great reference manual for Southern gardeners.
best gardening reference for the South --- except Florida.......2007-08-30
this is a wonderful guide to all the plants growing in the SouthEast. i treasured this book thru gardens in maryland, virginia, and south carolina. however, if you move to Florida, this is not the book for you. here, the growing seasons as well as many of the plants change. but it is a fantastic reference for everyone else.
Must have reference book.......2007-07-29
If you live in the South and like to garden this is a very valuable book to have. I bought it used but it looked like new.
Souther Living Garden Book.......2007-07-23
This book is the 2nd one I purchased. The information in this book is excellent for the Southern Gardener. Steve Bender has a great sense of humor and tells it like it is! I am a professional horticulturist and it is definitely the first resource I use when looking for information regarding plants and planting needs. It is well written and contains very accurate information.
The Ultimate Garden Book for Southern Living.......2007-07-10
This was exactly the kind of book I was searching for in gardening. As someone who is a life-long Midwesterner planning to move to the Mid-Atlantic States, I need a good basic book to help me know and understand about gardening in the South. This books provides everything I need to plan and grow a garden. It has thousands of color pictures and information about all the different kinds of plants that grow in the climate of the South. It will be my main source of information about gardening. I highly recommend this book.
