The study of biochemical adaption provides fascinating insights into how organisms "work" and how they evolve to sustain physiological function under a vast array of environmental conditions. This book describes how the abilities of organisms to thrive in widely different environments derive from two fundamental classes of biochemical adaptions: modifications of core biochemical processes that allow a common set of physiological functions to be conserved, and "inventions" of new biochemical traits that allow entry into novel habitats. Biochemical Adaptation: Mechanisms and Process in Physiological Evolution asks two primary questions. First, how have the core biochemical systems found in all species been adaptively modified to allow the same fundamental types of physiological processes to be sustained throughout the wide range of habitat conditions found in the biosphere? Second, through what types of genetic and biochemical processes have new physiological functions been fabricated? The primary audience for this book is faculty, senior undergraduates, and graduate students in environmental biology, comparative physiology, and marine biology. Other likely readers include workers in governmental laboratories concerned with environmental issues, medical students interested in some elements of the book, and medical researchers.

Countless ants transport and deposit seeds and thereby influence the survival, death, and evolution of many plant species. In higher plants, seed dispersal by ants (myrmecochory) has appeared many times independently in different lineages. More than 3000 plant species are known to utilize ant assistance to be planted. Myrmecochory is a very interesting and rather enigmatic form of mutualistic ant-plant associations. This phenomenon is extremely complex, because there are hundreds of ant species connected with hundreds of plant species. This book effectively combines a thorough approach to investigating morphological and physiological adaptations of plants with elegant field experiments on the behaviour of ants. This monograph is a first attempt at collecting information about morphology, ecology and phenology of ants and plants from one ecosystem. The book gives readers a panoramic view of the hidden, poorly-known interrelations not only between pairs of ants and plant species, but also between species communities in the ecosystem. The authors have considered not just one aspect of animal-plant relationships, but have tried to show them in all their complexity. Some aspects of the ant-plant interactions described in the book may be of interest to botanists, others to zoologists or ecologists, but the entire work is an excellent example of the marriage of these biological disciplines.

Scholastic perfection.......2004-09-14

I've been in an accredited university for fifteen years studying the intricacies of physiology. I have never come across a book that was executed to such perfection. The photos are astonishing in their clarity and intimate setting. The narration is concise and very clear, almost to the point where you want to phone the author and congratulate him on his accomplishment. If you are thinking of pursuing any kind of biological/medical field than I highly recommend this fine piece of art. It will soon be Shakespearean in its influence. Don't trust the simple words of my fellow plebian reviewers; this book is the second coming of the Bible.

A physiology instructor weighs in on this book.......2003-02-11

I have been teaching University-level physiology for over 10 years. I have used at least a dozen books, from the "essentials" to the "encyclopedic". For a one-semester course on physiology that emphasizes recurring mechanisms from a cellular and organ-level perspective, with a great introduction to ecological physiology thrown in, Eckert cannot be beat. In my experience, the vast majority of students respond better to Eckert's illustrations than to the endless flow charts that appear in most of the other books. It nicely fills the niche between "just the basics" essentials texts (which are simply not rigorous enough for biology majors) and the "every little detail" encyclopedic texts that most students find bewildering. If I had to learn animal physiology from just one textbook, this would be it; and I'd save the cell & molecular details from one of THOSE specialty texts instead. The ONLY criticism I have about Eckert is its nearly complete lack of consideration of the immune system.

Poor illustration, lengthy text,and not very well updated

The author can not explain the molecular aspects of biological processes well. The figures were fine but there are so many books that are far better than this. The author seriously needs to take some writing classes. I had to use another book in conjunction with this one, inorder to make sure I got the concepts correct. Compared to the other book, Eckert Animal Physiology is nothing!

A great referance!.......2000-03-25

As a university student in animal sciences, I bought this book to get a lot of great informations about animal physiology for my 1st grade. I've been very surprised of the quality of the informations mentioned in this book; well explained, easy to consult... it's a great book! Subjects are handle professionally and are written to make everyone who know a little bit about biology understand in details everything about animal physiology. A great book, similar as Neil A. Capmbell's Biology quality... simply a great referance!

I just got this book in the mail today, and I must say, I'm impressed with everything!! First of all, I live in Canada, but it still arrived BEFORE the estimated time given! My day just got better when I opened the book. I've been collecting the Ty products for almost a year now, and this is the best combination of information I've seen yet! It's nicely colored, easy to use, and has all the information you'll need to keep track of a collection! Although new beanies have hit the market since this was published, I still highly recommend this book for all the background information it gives.

Well organized.......2007-08-25

I have to disagree with one of the reviewers. The book IS organized by month. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular type of plant and then organized by month. For example, chapter 1 is Annuals with instructions on when to plant and what care to give by month. I found the book to be well organized with lots of good gardening tips and problem solving info.

misleading title.......2007-04-19

If I had examined this book in a store, I would not have purchased it. I was expecting a monthly list of what to do in your Florida garden. Instead, there are ten sections with Jan. through Dec. in each one, so that you have to go to the index to find a plant and then to it's monthly guide. I already have many garden books that I can use in that way. If the book had been organized by month with subsections for bulbs, annuals, etc listed under each month, it would be much more user friendly.
