Customer Reviews:
Well, it worked!.......2000-07-12
I got a Jack Russels terrier three months ago and when I brought her home it was like bringing Tarzan home from the jungle. This little creature was totally uncivilized, knew nothing, turned our lives in a living hell. The first thing she did was to bite me when I attempted to clean her ears (thank God she had the baby teeth when she did that!). She was barking & biting us, no one would dare to touch her! My little "Tarzan" finally responded to her name after a whole month. I was so surprised with her behavior, comparing her to my poodle who brought all her good manners with her upon birth and learned everything almost instantly. I was really in a bad situation with her since I had to find a way to civilize my Tarzan and make her part of the family. I got a few books on training, and used my own methods I used for my poodle but none of them would work. Tarzan would still bite us, bark any time of the day and unfortunately night too, take things from the coffee table, drink our coffee from the cup when left alone, and take GOOD care of all the plants in the house!
That's when this book came to the rescue. I must say I was very surprised with the techniques the author uses, but since I was desperate and had nothing to lose I put those methods to work. Well, after only a week Pinky learned more than what I tried to teach her in two months time.
The author is down to earth when it comes to dog training, making it clear that you have to understand that it's a dog you are trying to train and not human. She shows you the dog's point of view in order to understand their behavior better. Why they do the things they do, their way of thinking, and how you can can solve those problems. How would I know that by just spraying plain, natural water on her face would stop her from biting! But it did. That simple. Or when you want your dog to come to you, you must not run after her as she takes that for a game, but simply sit down and pat your legs.
We all love our dogs, there's no doubt. If we didn't, we wouldn't have got them in the first place. But that doesn't stop them from barking or biting. Just showing love and affection to the dog won't solve any behavior problem. If you are in the same situation I was, get this book, and you will see the benefits from the very first lesson. Thank you Mrs. Wilson.
Magically effective.......1999-11-21
We couldn't leave our dog in the back yard because of her barking at children, at neighbors, at the enemy cats next door, at joggers . . . everyone and everything. After three or four days of following the suggestions in this book, we have no more annoying barking. None! It's a miracle.
I don't know this author and have no stake at all in her selling this book. But if you have a behavior problem with your dog, you'll never spend a better fifteen dollars (with shipping).
This book will fix your pet problems.......1997-08-04
On Saturday morning 2nd August 1997 I took my dog "Chisel" a boxer staffy X for a walk as usual to the shops. And as usual he dragged me from the moment I left my house to the moment I returned. My hands were sore and my arms were tired. At the shops he also jumped up playfully onto a passer by who was clearly not impressed.
I had heard about "Bark Busters" and had seen the book at the vets. I went down to my nearest bookstore on Saturday around lunchtime and bought the book. I read through the first half and then turned to my specific problem on dogs "pulling" on the leash.
By Monday morning 4th August 1997 my dog was walking calmly by my side and it was once again a pleasure to take him for a walk.
There are some other problems I would like to cure and I am confident that using the techniques outlined in the book I will have no problem

Book Description
A virtual treasury, this book has more than 1,670 still banks beautifully presented in color and many more black and white illustrations. Focusing on American and English banks, there are many lovely examples of still banks from other countries as well, all rated in terms of their scarcity. Pages from manufacturer's catalogues are reproduced, and the text relates the histories of the manufacturers, specific details about the banks, and information for collectors about clubs and publications where more information can be obtained. The Moores also include a series of conversion tables which correlate the numbering system used in his book with that of all the other major works on still banks. The Penny Bank Book makes its predecessors obsolete. No enthusiast should be without this entertaining, magnificently organized masterwork.

Cast Iron Banks.......2007-07-22
Great book for the collector. Better than the earlier editions in that it has the prices listed with the pictures instead of in the back of the book.
Still the same banks that were in the earlier editions though.
It's paid for itself.......2000-03-06
I was at an auction and five out of the six banks there were listed in the book.
This book is a necessity if you are going bank shopping.......1999-02-15
The Penny Bank Book is a pictorial and value guide to collecting banks. Containing both good pictures and approximate values, it is the most comprehensive bank collecting book available at this time. It is a must for any serious collector. This is the guide I keep in my car to advise me.

Potty Training is simple with Zach's Potty and Zoe's Potty. These folded books are portable and laminated. Open the Zack and Zoe packages and you'll find a 3-dimensional doll that can actually sit on a potty just like a child. Inside is a charming story that gently teaches children to use the potty while acknowledging that accidents will happen.
Both Zack and Zoe wear a backpack that contains a potty chart just like the one found in the book, complete with reusable stickers, and a parent guide with frequently asked questions about the potty training process.
Take the stress out of potty training with Zach's Potty and Zoe's Potty.

This is the best snappy toy book!.......2001-06-13
My baby loves her Daddy to yawn along with Penny Polar bear. We have all these books, except for the snake one, and this one is the best in the series. Penny gets really sleepy and digs a cave for the winter. Other animals hear her yawn and think it's a monster. Penny comes out of the cave with two new baby cubs! All of them yawn and awaken to spring. Very cute polar bear and cubs! One of my 9-month-old's very favorites.

My kids are tired of reading it, but sometimes I read it anyway. I love looking at the camping scene. Perfect book for very young ones ...
A wonderful book for sparking the imagination.......1999-12-15
This is the ideal bedtime story book. The text is simple and repetitive, always popular with little kids, but the pictures are full of detail and great to talk about. My son and I have spent a lot of time going through his copy, finding each toy on every new page and chatting about what they are doing.
Great toddler bedtime book.......1998-10-03
My 2-1/2 year old son loves this book. He likes to sit in bed while I read it, and then go to sleep with the book in bed next to him. I think he likes it so much because he sleeps with several stuffed "critters" just like this little boy does. Great pictures, not a lot of words, very cute book.

Book Description
Sunset's Western Garden Book has been the bible of western gardeners for generations. Following the same formula, we've created the first comprehensive guide to keeping a garden in the fifteen northeastern states and eastern Canada. Along with Sunset's highly regarded system of climate zone maps, the book includes 1,500 amazing illustrations and a complete plant encyclopedia listing more than 6,000 varieties.
Customer Reviews:
This is my bible!.......2006-09-28
I LOVE this book so much that I ordered one for my father when he wouldn't give mine back. I use it religiously; it's great to see the plants in full color and is an added bonus to have the sections which help organize your garden by priorities (color, foliage, shade, etc). I live in northern New Hampshire and I consult the book during the winter to help make my dreams for the spring and summer come true! As some other reviewers have said, it would have been helpful to get an idea of what the plants would look like down the road.
Useful for the Midwest!.......2005-04-19
Although there is not yet a Midwestern Garden Book, Sunset has put out a Midwest Top 10 guide, which includes a zone map for the midwest. As many of these zones extend into the Northeast, the NE Garden Book can be used until we have our own Garden Book.
Universal Usefulness for Cold Climates.......2005-03-22
We actually sell this book in our Northeastern California nursery. The Western Garden Book (truely, THE western garden "Bible") made an ernest but failed attempt to help the coldest climates gardeners of the west with their last edition. We find that for the Truckee-Tahoe region, the Sunset Northeastern Garden Book works best. This book's zones 45 and 44 (northern plains and mts. of no. Vermont) that our customers are able to use to determine hardiness and ultimately, survivability (less wasted space without all the southern California tropicals either). I would suggest this book throughout the Sierras, the Cascades and the Rockies. We have been cold-climate nurserying since 1975 and this is the ONE we offer first. Eric / Villager Nursery, Truckee California
The best book for your Northeast garden.......2004-05-06
This book has been so completely helpful. So many other books, I look up plants but then find that the won'tt grow in my area. This book is my new gardening bible!
Don't stay home without it!.......2002-04-19
For 25+ years in my native Northern California I used the magnificent Sunset Western Garden Book as my garden "bible". How wonderful that they have come up with one for the Northeast just when I needed it!
I wish they would show what these plants will look like at 5 years, 10 years, 20+ years old to give a better idea of how it would look in your garden over time.

A Plethora of Gardening Ideas.......2001-12-13
The reader is offered a plethora of gardening ideas through attractive and plentiful photographs. Numerous garden types, garden designs, structural elements, and plant life are discussed in this book. However, by covering such an extensive variety of garden topics, the reader never gains an in depth appreciation of each particular garden style. This book will provide a complete overview to gardeners uncertain with which particular garden style they wish to pursue. Once the selection is made the reader would be better rewarded with purchasing a garden book dedicated to the chosen garden style.
A must have for the photos alone!.......2000-07-18
Sunset, the bible of west coast gardening, finally comes east and it is well worth the wait.
As the owner of a home on a desolate, windswept acre, I have bought over a dozen landscape books and magazines looking for inspiration. I could have saved alot of time and money and just bought this one.
So well written you could sit down and read it straight through. And so well organized and indexed you can use it for quick reference.
It covers everything from planning to installation. Includes many sample plans with plant lists. But the best thing about this book is the PHOTOGRAPHY. The photos are stunning and plentiful. Most photos are refered to in detail in either the main text or a side bar and the photos actually pertain to the topic (which is most unusual for this type of book)!
Book Description
In 1977 David Foster took to the woods of New England to build a cabin with his own hands. Along with a few tools he brought a copy of the journals of Henry David Thoreau. Foster was struck by how different the forested landscape around him was from the one Thoreau described more than a century earlier. The sights and sounds that Thoreau experienced on his daily walks through nineteenth-century Concord were those of rolling farmland, small woodlands, and farmers endlessly working the land. As Foster explored the New England landscape, he discovered ancient ruins of cellar holes, stone walls, and abandoned cartways--all remnants of this earlier land now largely covered by forest. How had Thoreau's open countryside, shaped by ax and plough, divided by fences and laneways, become a forested landscape?
Part ecological and historical puzzle, this book brings a vanished countryside to life in all its dimensions, human and natural, offering a rich record of human imprint upon the land. Extensive excerpts from the journals show us, through the vividly recorded details of daily life, a Thoreau intimately acquainted with the ways in which he and his neighbors were changing and remaking the New England landscape. Foster adds the perspective of a modern forest ecologist and landscape historian, using the journals to trace themes of historical and social change.
Thoreau's journals evoke not a wilderness retreat but the emotions and natural history that come from an old and humanized landscape. It is with a new understanding of the human role in shaping that landscape, Foster argues, that we can best prepare ourselves to appreciate and conserve it today.
From the journal:
"I have collected and split up now quite a pile of driftwood--rails and riders and stems and stumps of trees--perhaps half or three quarters of a tree...Each stick I deal with has a history, and I read it as I am handling it, and, last of all, I remember my adventures in getting it, while it is burning in the winter evening. That is the most interesting part of its history. It has made part of a fence or a bridge, perchance, or has been rooted out of a clearing and bears the marks of fire on it...Thus one half of the value of my wood is enjoyed before it is housed, and the other half is equal to the whole value of an equal quantity of the wood which I buy."

Customer Reviews:
Natural New England: then, now, & all points in-between.......2004-12-04
Henry David Thoreau was intrigued by the natural world around Concord, Massachusetts, and a few other favorite New England sites. And whenever he was interested in something or wanted to mull over something, he jotted his findings and his musings in his journals. David Foster has analyzed the journal entries and has compared all the descriptions of Thoreau's New England landscape of the 19th century with our present-day environment. The result is a marvelous insight into the complex intertwinings of natural succession and human land use over several centuries.
At first glance, you might think this book is just another mere compilation of quotes from Thoreau's journals. Nothing could be further from the truth! The chapters address a variety of aspects of the landscape. Each chapter begins with Foster's original explanation of the topic, and he backs up his interpretations with Thoreau's dated journal entries. We are fortunate to have these daily observations and to be able to see the pond of "Walden" fame as a microcosm of the 19th-century New England landscape. For while Thoreau wrote that he "went to the woods," the place he went to was a far cry from what we would now typically call "wooded." Foster says, "It is ironic to recognize today, when a high value is placed on nature, wilderness, and old-growth landscape, that America's premier nature writer and propounder of conservation and wilderness values lived at a time when the New England landscape was arguably the most tamed and most dominated by human activity in its entire history." (p. 222)
And while the writings of Thoreau are generally approached through American literature classes, we've been remiss in not giving more credence to the *science* in his observations. He had ideas about sustainability that were unusual and ahead of his time, and we are gradually coming to realize that his notes make perfect sense today. "More than half a century after Thoreau laid out the story of succession in painstaking detail in his journals, his lessons had to be relearned by the forest ecologists at Harvard." (p. 226) David Foster has the benefit of being able to draw on both knowledge bases: Thoreau's and his own, and he can easily compare the two in this volume. Indeed, this is exactly the kind of book that Thoreau would have read and would have been captivated by, for he was forming his own theories about the trends he found in Nature.
In this volume, Foster puts a new spin on the concept of conservation, preservation, and exactly what is "native" or "a natural state." Every inch of our world has been affected by some sort of human activity. "We are caught in a cultural dilemma in which we seek to maintain what we know and what is becoming rare even though it is largely the consequence of intense human activity." (p. 225)
The text is accompanied by the beautiful pen-and-ink illustrations of Abigail Rorer, who has done similiar work for other "Thoreau books." Foster's additional bibliographic essay provides documentation and the processes he went through to conduct his research. A list of sources plus a 10-page bibliography cap off this work.
While this is an easy enough book to read, Foster's narrations and conclusions take time to digest. They must be savored and absorbed. The reader needs time to stop and think about what he/she's just read. So while this is a worthwhile read, it isn't necessarily a quick one. Recommended for Thoreauvians (of course!), and should also be mandatory study for land managers throughout New England, the Northeast, and in other North American regions. Even lifelong New England residents will learn something new here.
Terrific book, very well written.......1999-05-21
A must read for people interested in the environment and how to interpret their surroundings. Beautifully written, thoughtful and intelligent. One of the best books I've read.
