Book Description
More and more people are enjoying pleasure riding to the point of wanting to own their own horse. And with the cost and distance considerations of maintaining the animal at a boarding stable often an off-putting factor, the possibility of homeowners keeping a horse on their property becomes very appealing. But just how possible and practical would it be?
According to Joan Fry, an experienced horse owner and longtime backyard horse keeper, the answer is more times than not yes. Beginning with such initial factors as sufficient and suitable land and access to veterinarian, farrier, and feed, Fry leads the prospective backyard keeper through constructing and furnishing a small barn, paddock, and corral; locating and purchasing the horse; and then feeding and otherwise tending to the animal's creature comforts.
Of special value to both novice and experienced owners are the sections on feed, which takes into account the most up-to-date nutrition research, and on training the horse for safe and enjoyable trail riding.
Written with encouraging cheer and plenty of "horse sense," BACKYARD HORSEKEEPING will lead the way to maintaining and enjoying your very own horse on your very own property.

horse book.......2007-04-11
Gina Cresse an extremely talented family member - great book - EXCELLENT art work
Every book you'll ever need, all rolled up in 1........2007-02-18
Fry has written the most comprehensive, practical guide I've ever seen. I first bought my horse in July of 2006 and her book was one of the first one I checked out of the library. I didn't buy it at the time because I wanted to wait and see what other books were available and how I liked them before spending money on one. 6 months later, I was still stuck on "Backyard Horsekeeping: The Only Guide You'll Ever Need."
Fry's book covers everything from how much space you would need to keep one horse to nutrition to health issues to training. A lot of books are written for people who are going to have more than one horse or who are interested in showing their horse. I'm neither of those. Fry's practical advice will work well for any type of horse owner and is very comprehensive!
I LOVE this book!
A must read.......2006-05-19
Joan Fry's book Backyard Horsekeeping has a subtitle - The only guide you'll ever need. And she's absolutely correct. With wit and wisdom, Ms Fry has written a very comprehensive book about all you'd ever need or want to know about horses before you buy one of your own. Sprinkled throughout the text are photos and drawings that serve to enhance your knowledge of the subject. It's definitely the first book you need if you're thinking of buying and keeping your own horse.

Book Description
Gardening is now the favorite outdoor leisure activity in America. Homeowners realize the health benefits available from gardening and the potential increase in their home's property value.
Regional gardening titles offer the most useful advice because they provide credible information on the plants that perform best in specific states. Gardeners want information they can trust and use successfully in their own gardens.
The Arizona Gardener's Guide is a full-color plant selection resource guide written especially for Arizona gardeners. It includes the top 175 landscape plants as recommended by one of Arizona's most respected horticultural experts.
Customer Reviews:
An indispensible guide for Arizona gardeners.......2007-06-30
Information from books written by authors without the experience of gardening in Arizona, do not work in this state. Mary Irish has spent her life working for a variety of Arizona gardening organizations. She knows the climate so her information works... simple as that.
This book is good for making plant selections when planning your garden. It offers nice photos and hardiness information specific to Arizona climate and soil conditions. Use in conjunction with Irish's Month-By-Month Gardening in the Desert Southwest and you should succeed.
There is a very short list of books required for Arizona gardening (see my list on Amazon)... but this one is high on it.
Good quick-reference guide for Arizona gardeners.......2007-06-12
We moved to Arizona two years ago, and my wife wanted a good quick reference guide to use in planting and tending our desert garden. This book fills the bill nicely, providing descriptions and clear photos of approximately 200 plants, along with tips on how to best use them in a garden. Ms. Irish's writing style is straightfoward, even a bit plodding, but readable. A good companion to "Plants for Dry Climates" by Duffield and Jones.
Arizona Gardener's Guide.......2006-02-25
Excellent book. Has given me many ideas of flowers to plant in this area.
good, but . . ........2005-08-31
This book was recommended to us highly by our real estate agent when we moved to Arizona, it also seems everyone in the subdivision has it. I found it too elementary. It was glossy, and pretty, etc, well presented by publisher.
Sonoran Desert Gardening.......2004-10-26
This book is one of the best introductions I've found on gardening in the Sonoran desert. It is well-designed, with graphical cues that tell readers if the plant is drought-tolerant, fragrant, wildlife-friendly, Sonoran, etc.
Information is presented in convenient and easily digested sections, e.g., shrubs, trees, vines, etc. Common names are featured prominently, with botanical names underneath. (I eventually learned the botanical names so that I could read and understand books that offered more in-depth information, e.g., on particular agaves, yuccas and nolinas.) It also includes brief information on care, companion planting, bloom period, size (you'd be surprised how big some of these plants get), etc.
If you seek books with greater depth, check out "Agaves, Yuccas, and Related Plants: A Gardener's Guide" by Gary and Mary Irish, or "Landscape Plants for Dry Regions: More Than 600 Species From Around the World" by Warren Jones and Charles Sacamano. Another good resource for Sonoran gardeners is the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix (they offer a hotline and many other resources).

Ornament is NOT crime.......2007-06-29
Great Book! The physical book itself has a great feeling to it, but also is candy for the eyes. I enjoy looking at the pictures for pleasure as well as inspiration for textures and color combinations. The images themselves are valuable, but the book also goes into the history of why what was important/popular when. I'm an in house graphic designer and my co-workers like to borrow it on a regular basis as well. Good value for a good book!

the difinative source book.......2000-06-24
This book is great not only for someone who is just getting started in decorating but, also for the professional as a referance. It is broken down into six basic catagories; Style guide, Fabrics. Wallpapers, Paints and Finishes, Tiles, and Flooring. Judith Miller does an excellent job of giving a wealth of information about not only different periods but also what textiles lend themselves to these periods. I was not to impressed with the paints and finishes section however. I really liked the organization by image (ie fabrics with flowers) and style period rather than fabric type or colors. The variety is amazing. The best part of the book is that she gives you the info to find all of the textiles! Including the maker, if other colors are available, and estimated price. This is great, other style books generally do not give you half of the wealth of information that is book does. I couldn't wait to get started.

Easy to Read, Well-Organized, & Highly-Educational.......1998-05-07
Being an interior designer, this book would be one of the best reference on my book shelves. The autour's knowleadge on fabric seems to be highly proffessional so that I believe this book could be an excellent textbook for schools. The book covers a well-summerized, but not superficial, history on each types of fabric from all over the world, and it further examines fabrics by catagories of different design subjects. Special terms on fabric design are well explained. The design of the book is pleasant, and many beautiful pictures are given which are helpful to understand the content. This is the kind of book I have been looking for, since I was an interior design student. (I studied in the U.S. so that I have seen so many other related books published there to compare !!!)
