      Book Description

SPANIELS AND THEIR TRAINING THEIR BREEDING AND REARING BENCH SHOW POINTS AND CHARACTERISTICS By Freeman Lloyd A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT Originally privately published in the early 1900s, this scarce work on the Spaniel is both expensive and very hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and illustrations, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a highly respected expert on many breeds of dogs, but freely admitted that his favourite would always be the liver and white spaniel. He was Kennel Editor of "Field and Stream" for a number of years and also contributed numerous articles to the dog and sporting press of that era. The book's seventy two pages cover the origins and history of the Spaniel from the 17th Century up to around 1930. Detailed chapters deal with: Spaniels of Yesterday and Today. - Naming the Young Puppy. - Rearing Puppies. - Yard Training. - Training to the Gun. - Field Trials. - Shooting over Spaniels. - The Spaniel and Water. - Irish Water Spaniels. - American Water Spaniels. - English Springer Spaniels. - Welsh Springer Spaniels. - Cocker Spaniels. - Clumber Spaniels. - Field Spaniels. - Sussex Spaniels. - English Water Spaniels. This is a fascinating read for any sportsman, Spaniel enthusiast or historian of the breed, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. "The fearful Partridge being Sprung by quest Of Spaniells, from their pleasant foods and rest. Again: The Feasant cock the woods do most frequent Where spaniels spring and search him by the sent". Anon. 1671. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Great book if you want to know how to build structures like gazebos, walls, fences, pools, ramps, decks, irrigation systems, etc. It shows you the step by step with photos and drawings.
This book is not the right choice if you are looking for plants arrangement.

          5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2001-11-14

I am new to landscaping and bought this book because I have a lot of questions. This book gave me a lot of great ideas. If you are new to landscaping you will find it very usefull. Don't hesitate to buy if you are a newbie to landscaping.

4 out of 5 stars A excellent buy; very good structure and content........1999-08-01

This book walks you through the processes of landscaping, from planning to installation, in a very readable, understandable and enjoyable manner. As a landscape designer, I'm always searching for references of any type to use when creating "yard spaces" and presenting those ideas to my customers. With books, I'm usually disappointed either with the graphic and/or written content regarding the details of landscaping, particularly those publications sold at the Home Depots et al. This was different. Technical to the point that's necessary and not too "flowery" in it's narrative, it just provides well written ideas and executions for many landscaping tasks.

The illustrations & photography in many books I've seen work OK but give the books an "old" feel, because, in many cases, they are old in date and style. With few exceptions, the artwork and landscape "styling" in this book appear current and appropriate. That made it a more believable book too.

All said and done, this book is an excellent value for those seeking general-to-semi-technical information for a wide variety of landscaping tasks. With its emphasis on extensive and educated planning, this book is an asset to the homeowner and the landscape professional alike. In my opinion, one of the book's greatest achievements may be that homeowners, after reading it, can decide better whether to tackle a project themselves or work with professionals.

A new direction for the best-selling series: Hip Hotels focusing uniquely on cities.

In the six years since Herbert Ypma invented a new genre of travel publishing with the original Hip Hotels, an astonishing expansion has brought Highly Individual Places into every neighborhood of one of the most vibrant cities in the world: New York.

This new Hip Hotels book contains district-by-district coverage, including an introduction to the neighborhood that succinctly sums up its particular atmosphere. There are specially taken photographs of each hotel, accompanied by informative descriptions plus essential information: street and email addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and room rates. A new feature of these city books is the listing, for each hotel, of an "absolutely have-to-see" site of special local interest and a local "must-have lunch or dinner" restaurant.

From New York's classic Carlyle to the cutting-edge QT, there is a hotel in this book to suit everyone. 300+ color illustrations.

                      Book Description

Profiles of more than fifty establishments that have supplied goods and services to royalty–and the merely discriminating–for more than one hundred years

"A gentleman," Winston Churchill once observed, "buys his hats at Locks, his shoes at Lobbs, his shirts at Harvie and Hudson, his suits at Huntsman and his cheese at Paxton and Whitfield."

Luckily for the gentlemen–and gentlewomen–among us, all of these shops and dozens more are still in business, providing the traditional British goods and food that they've been supplying Londoners for a century or more. More than thirty venerable stores, along with another twenty or so eateries, are profiled in The Historic Shops and Restaurants of London.

"The most beautiful shop in the world . . ." is how Esquire magazine describes John Lobb, Bootmaker's opulent premises in Mayfair. Less grand, but no less quaint, is Paxton and Whitfield, now on Jermyn Street, which dates to 1742 when cheese monger Stephen Cullum sets up his stall in Clare Market. (Now the shop sells the most prized artisanal cheeses in Great Britain.) Have a drink at the long, narrow little Grapes Pub. Built in 1720, on the site of a previous pub, the Grapes was a working class tavern that Charles Dickens knew well. As a child, he was made to stand on a table and sing to the customers. As an adult, he immortalized it as the Six Jolly Fellowship Porters pub in Our Mutual Friend. These are only a few of the many of the establishments described that are holders of the Royal Warrant, dating back to the 15th century and still granted today to recognize excellence and quality.

Bespoke shirt-makers, hatters, haberdashers, perfumers, bookstores, chemists, an umbrella maker, and chocolatiers are only a few of the small specialist shops included, most of which are located in the most quaint and beautiful settings in London.

Also included are traditional restaurants and bars, ranging from picturesque pubs and "caffes" to fish'n'chips stands and eel-and-pie shops.

                            Book Description

Here is the lowdown on 255 hostels in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Whether you're looking to party or just looking for a clean, quiet, affordable place to crash, this guide will get you exactly where you want to go. The author tells it like it is with his at-a-glance rating system and candid descriptions. Entries include his opinions on cleanliness, safety, hospitality, party potential, best bet for a bite, the hostel's "gestalt," and what to see and do in the area. He'll also tell you how to get there using your own feet or wheels, or by public transportation.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe great once, but not anymore.......2004-05-04

This book meant well, but we set out for Ireland this last March and found it to be horrendously out of date. We found ourselves lost for three hours in the center of Limerick searching for the hostels listed, only to find out they had all gone out of business. It also calls for bringing your own linens -- all hostels in Ireland now provide a blanket, sheets, and pillow. Pretty much the only linen under your own discretion is a towel. The beginning section is good for learning the base facts behind hostels, but it's still no longer a book to be trusted anymore... At least until a new edition comes out.

5 out of 5 stars Great accomadation guide.......2003-11-06

The second edition continues in the fine tradition of the first.Ireland, like New Zealand and unlike the UK, has a lot of private backpacker hostels as well as the official Youth Hostels. So a seasoned traveler needs a guide like this and not just the YHA handbook.Commercial Web sites on hostels often rave about the huge "free" breckfasts some may offer, but omit to mention a hostel has no self catering kitchen. So you have the added cost of having to eat dinner out. This book is really good on saying what the catering facilities are like.Places like Dublin, Galway and Belfast have a LOT of hostels and picking one that is not a dud or miles from the pubs is important. This guide sifts through all the hostels of the big cities and gives a few hot picks on the best of the bunch. In the above 3 mentioned cities in my experience of staying there, the picks were spot on.

                            5 out of 5 stars Hostels Ireland.......2000-05-10

Paul Karr has done his homework and he receives an A+ for the information in his Hostels Ireland book. My wife and I spent 7 weeks treking Ireland summer '99 and found his book to be invaluable. The information was clear, concise and accurate. Things change and so do hostels and some hostels he recommended we liked better than others. But we did not stay any where we disliked or felt the information in the book had misled us. Hostel Ireland was our bible and served us well. It was our "Lonely Planet" for where to stay. He did a great job and I'm looking forward to any future editions.

5 out of 5 stars I'll have to write another review when I get back!.......1999-08-22

I leave for Ireland in 10 days for a 2 week stay. This book was invaluable in planning my trip and I'm sure has cut down on the expenses. I was able to read it in one night and quickly scanning the reviews was made simple by clever icons giving each hostel the thumbs up, thumbs done, a cleanliness factor, party index, and general brief review.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, up-to-date descriptions, ratings are questionable.......1999-07-12

Paul Karr offers a comprehensive, honest, regional survey of the best hostels in Ireland. I had the opportunity to stay in four of them recently and I disagree with the ratings that he presents, espe cially in the section "Paul's Picks". Both the Old School House Hostel in Dun Laoghaire and the Bru Hostel on Inisheer Island were average, uninspired hostels, adequate, but certainly not worthy of special attention. I did, however, stay in 2 other hostels which were rated "thumbs up" and found them to be wonderful - clean, friendly, spacious and fun. They are the Old Mill Hostel in Westport and the Aille River Hostel in Doolin. I would not have had the pleasure of staying in either of these without the help of this book. Thanks, Paul!

                                Book Description

Although books have been written about various opera houses throughout the world, no one work has covered more than a relatively small number of the larger, well known companies and houses, and none have made more than brief mention of the smaller houses. No book has comprehensively listed opera repertories. Little, in sum, has been written about any of the smaller companies and houses located in non-English-speaking countries. This is the most comprehensive reference book ever written on opera companies and houses in Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand-over 300, from the well known to the smaller. Each entry includes a history of the opera house or company, the works (title and composer) and type of productions offered, company staff, world and country premieres, repertory, and practical information on the theater's address, nearby hotel accommodations and how to order tickets. Most entries conclude with a bibliography.

I had been looking for a book of monastaries and convents which were open to visitors and offered retreats.
Sanctuaries was just what I had been searching for!
I visited St. Joseph's Abbey in Massachusetts, based on the description given in this book, and was pleasantly rewarded.
This is a wonderful book for anyone looking for a simpler way of looking at our complicated lives.
