Book Description
Thoroughly investigates the reality of horse slaughter in the United States.
Customer Reviews:
After the finish line: the race to end horse slaughter in america.......2007-05-13
I needed this book to help me write an essay for college. It was a great tool to have along side my work. It is against slaughtering horses on US soil and it is filled with insightfull information and helped me tie all my lose ends up. A graphic read but good.
The Dirty Little Secret Exposed.......2006-09-14
There are many, many nice people in the Thoroughbred industry. But if it solely comes to judging those in influential positions who can make positive change, the handling of the beautiful equine athletes after the finish line has been nothing short of criminal.
Bill Heller exposes the ties that the horse slaughter industry has to racing in this brutally honest and very important book for fans of the sport at any interest level.
And don't think for a second that the slaughterhouses who "process" the meat for foreign consumption become the final vestiges for the runners who are just not good enough, too old or battered to race anymore, or too old or just don't have the pedigree to stay in the breeding shed.
There are runners that have regal bloodlines and/or major stakes victories who plummet through into the sales ring to be sold for pennies on the dollar or sold privately for shipment to the plants; crammed together in double-decker semis, without adequate food and water and oftentimes even more brutally treated during the final hours before a bolt is fired into their heads, hopefully putting the Thoroughbreds quickly out of a misery that may have built up for years.
After the Finish Line is not an easy read. But there is some hope captured in several chapters, with Heller discussing the horse sanctuary and adoption movements, with a listing of organizations throughout North America.
You may not look at the regal days of the Triple Crown or Breeders' Cup Championships the same way after reading the book. It hopefully will get you involved in some way to assist those who have the resources to make a difference before that last race is run.
Show the Love to Horses.......2005-05-12
If you love horses & want to help save them from slaughter this is the manual. Bill Heller tells the truth.
Along with the stories & information about the horrible practice of horse slaughter there are websites listed for every state where you can find horse shelters if you want to adopt a horse or need to find a permanent home for one you love.
I found a shelter in Michigan that I send a little gift to monthly. My first foster horse there was a blind palamino named Billy. His owner put him there before she passed away of a terminal illness. Billy passed away too so now I foster one of his companions. For a city person it's fun to help lovely creature.
There are two reasons to stop horse slaughter besides being kind. One, horse theft has risen because someone can make a profit selling a stolen horse to a slaugher auction. Children wake up to find their beloved pet horse has been stolen. It's too heartbreaking! Two, personally, I believe that horses are being more frequently injured on racetracks because there are not enough of them running. I think they are fatigued by running too often.
HR 503 passed in Congress. If you love horses please contact your senators about saving them from slaughter.

The Cat Who Walked Across France

Book Description
As an artist, a cat has no home in the world save Paris. (To paraphrase Nietzsche.) Here is the story of Paintbrush, the cat in a bow tie who leaves family, friends, and the Midwest behind to chase a dream of artistic fulfillment. Engagingly illustrated throughout with bright, cheerful watercolors and written in a charming style to match, Paintbrish in Paris is the first book by Jill Butler, a designer and collagist. In it she follows Paintbrush from his first excursions beyond his atelier to the invitation to show his work.
Customer Reviews:
Whimsically entertaining!.......1999-12-19

AN INSIDER'S VIEW OF LIVING IN PARIS.......1998-09-21
PAINTBRUSH IS A CAT. THIS IS HIS STORY OF MOVING TO PARIS AND GETTING TO KNOW ABOUT THE "LA VIE FRANCAISE"...RULES FOR DINNER, WHERE TO SHOP (INSIDER'S ADDRESSES), MUSEUMS AND A CUTE STORY . ADORABLE ILLUSTRATIONS: LOOKS LIKE A CHILDREN'S BOOK BUT WRITTEN FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN.
Customer Reviews:
it's not REAL you crazy people!.......2004-07-24
First of all, after I read these reviews I was SHOCKED. This book is in the HUMOR section! there's absolutely no scientific basis... it's just all in fun! I give it 5 stars for the good laugh it gave me!
My Literary Cat.......2001-06-25
My cat tried to eat the book. Does this signal a voracious literary appetite?
Uh oh............2000-06-30
My dumb cat just tested 40 points higher than my IQ. Now what do I do?
I have dumb cats.......2000-02-24
This book was very interesting, but if you have an older, spoiled kitty, paid previously to just lay around, don't expect a lot. I enjoyed the book, but unfortunately I found that my cats' artistic abilities are limited to NOT looking at the pictures.
I REALLY throughly enjoyed your book........1997-04-04
The reason I enjoy your book is because I have a great facination in cats I havn't read the whole book yet but I am hoping to save up. I have five cats and enjoy there company. It would make such a lovely gift for family & friends. So go buy the book (test your cats intellagence) and go test your cats knowledge, you never know your cats IQ could just well be better than yours.

What could be a more sophisticated combination than the elegant streets of Paris, coupled with a regal brigade of fancy French felines? For this luxurious collection of black and white photographs, Barnaby Conrad III has selected prints that reflect the fascination and deep respect Parisians have for their cats. The photographs span almost 100 years of city life and include work by the greatest French photographers including Jacques Henri Lartigue, Gilberte Brassai, and Robert Doisneau. Truly urbanized, the Parisian cat traverses city roofs, slinks over cobbled streets, and curls up in the arms of loving city dwellers. Some of the selected photographs border on the bizarre--Max Vadukul presents a collage of black and white cats flying through the air above a classic Parisian rooftop.
Cats not only fascinated great French photographers, but also captured the imagination of famous French writers. A sampling of kitty-inspired words by Collette and Baudelaire complete this elegant little book.
Book Description
From kittens peering out of curtained shop windows to mysterious tomcats slinking across tiled rooftops, les chats parisiens embody the sensuous spirit of Paris. This charming volume presents an artful gallery of black-and-white photographs of felines by such twentieth-century master photographers as Jacques Henri Lantigue, Edouard Boubat, and Robert Doisneau. Accompanied by an entertaining introduction and whimsical musings on cats by some of France's most ?illustrious intellectuals, including Chateaubriand, Baudelaire, and Colette, Les Chats de Paris will delight cat lovers and Francophiles the world over.
Customer Reviews:
For the Francoailurophile in your life.......1999-12-14
There are some amazing shots of cats in this book, more so, even, than of dogs in Conrad's "Les Chiens de Paris". (I would assume it's more difficult to pose a cat than a dog.) However, there is also a bit of filler here, which wasn't true of the dog volume, possibly due to a smaller pool of eligible photos. Still, these cats are in rain gutters, atop pay phones, chasing mice along yardsticks, peeking over sheet music, performing in a street circus, tucked into a man's four-foot beard.
The pictures are adorable and innocent, but watch out. Conrad's witty introduction contains some racy passages (about the she-cat's sexual prowess, and a neutered tom's suicide) that might make some think twice about giving it to (literate) children. (If "Chiens" is G, "Chats" is PG-13.) For the urban adult ailurophile, however, this is the perfect gift.

A Fantasy Of Cats & More Cats........2005-09-19
These photos are simply marvelous. Having been the owner of many cats these past twenty-seven years (and a few kittens when young), I have taken many photographs over this period of time. None, however, can compare with these. It makes your heart glad to look at the lovelies in the different poses and stances. Cats are highly intelligent and know exactly how to pose under different circumstances. Recently, I needed a ride to the vet to get Star's yearly shots and checkup. She heard me say "All we need are her shots, so it shouldn't take long." She hid under the bed until almost time to go, forgoing her tuna lunch, and I had to hytail her out to get ready for the trip.
Lillian Jackson Braun has made a fortune writing about the cats 'who' and had this quoke, "Cats never strike a pose that isn't photogenic." Some of her enormous supply of these books include THE CAT WHO PLAYED BRAHMS, THE CAT WHO TALKED TO GHOSTS, and THE CAT WHO TALKED TO THE BIRDS (which Amazon did not have listed, so perhaps it was listed in her Cat short stories).
Cats are independent but lovable creatures who love you and make good companions for all ages. And the best thing is they don't bark,.
A cat lovers' feast.......1998-08-24
It's a beautiful little book that sums of the wonderment of the cat. The illustrations are great. I'd like to find out more about the illustrator, Derold Page. His cat paintings are fabulous.

ASIN: 1402736339 |
Book Description
Purrblo Picasso, Furida Kahlo, Mewcel Duchamp: It’s a well-kept secret, but cats have always been at the clawing-edge of the artistic world! Colorful paws have left their prints as far back as Ancient Mesopotamia and scratched impressive carvings in Greek and Roman Temples. Finally, their masterful legacy is receiving its due, thanks to this witty celebration of kitty art. And what a gallery it is—truly the cat’s meow! On display are the finest feline masterpieces: paintings from such greats as Furmeer of Delft, Frans-hissco Goya, and Clawed Monet. Gaze at “Whisker’s Mother” and the decadent illustrations of Pawbrey Beardsley. Both cat fans and art lovers are sure to enjoy this, and have fun identifying the artists and parodied pictures.

Book Description
The sheer number of choices among Hydrangea species, hybrids, and cultivated varieties can be overwhelming even for the most advanced gardeners. How to choose from among the hundreds of mopheads, climbers, lacecaps, and oakleafs, to name just a few? And how to care for hydrangeas in American gardens, when nearly all the books offering advice about them come from England and Europe? Respected plantsman Michael A. Dirr comes to the rescue in this refreshingly forthright and practical guide to these distinctive shrubs and climbers.
Customer Reviews:
Best of Best.......2007-03-21
I think it's the best book I ever saw on the subject. It will be useful to amateurs and specialists. It is critical, complete, and honest. It is exact, practical, and technical, but with personal notes here and there that I find touching, amusing, and endearing. Did you know that Hydrangea anomala subsp petiolaris'flowers stare at the passerby? Now you know. If you love Hydrangeas do buy this book.
Extremely Informative.......2006-06-27
This guy knows his posies. Everything I've seen that he has written has been well done and most informative. I'm using his hydrangea book as my bible for beginning to raise these gorgeous things and am finding that he knows varieties, tactics, and possible problems (and solutions)I'd never heard of.
Master gardener .......2005-09-30
Beautiful photos but disappointed that the name wasn't on the picture- was cumbersome to go between the list of names and the photos
Incredible!.......2005-08-09
We live in the same zone as the author... his writing and the unbelievable information has really helped us move our collection of hydrangea forward! It is a great read, and written for those of us who don't have a horticultural degree.
An Excellent Book for Hydrangea Lovers.......2004-12-10
Hydrangeas have been a favorite of mine ever since I moved to an old farmhouse in the middle of Baltimore City and saw an old fashioned Mop Head Hydrangea in full, glorious bloom in the back yard. The plant was probably fifty years old and incredibly big and vigorous. This one plant sparked a passion that is still going strong over twenty years later.
Hydrangeas for American Gardens by Michael Dirr is the most comprehensive book available on Hydrangeas. This is not just another pretty coffee table book. If you are interested in Hydrangeas, you will probably frequently refer to the book's in depth information on Hydrangeas.
The book gives extensive information on many of the cultivars available, but neglects to give extensive zone hardiness information. This oversight is particularly unfortunate, since the book is written for gardens here in the USA, where Texas gardens are in an extremely different climate from Maine gardens. However, the book does note some hardiness information in the descriptions of various cultivars and it also has several lists of plants that are hardy and aren't hardy below zone 7.
The book begins with the standard information that any good book on a single plant species covers. It discusses taxonomy and nomenclature. However, don't let this scientific information put you off or make you feel the book will be too difficult to read. You can always move straight to chapter two.
I was pleased to see that chapter two of the book covers the usually neglected climbing hydrangea. I have a special fondness for these quiet, lush vines. Chapters three to ten continue to discuss hydrangea species, with chapter eleven covering some less common varieties. Chapter seven, Hydrangea macrophylla, includes an excellent cultivar chart that allows you to compare cultivars of these popular hydrangeas. A wonderful bonus in this book is the lovely colored pencil drawings scattered throughout these chapters.
Chapter twelve, Garden Care and Culture, discusses the best growing conditions for these plants. The section on flower color is particularly useful for those people longing for blue flowers on their pink bushes.
If you are interested in growing your own hydrangeas, don't neglect the propagation advice in chapter thirteen. The information is simple enough for even a beginner to understand.
Chapter fourteen discusses pests and diseases, while fifteen covers a variety of additional information, such as how to cut blossoms. The final chapter covers the future of the hydrangea.
The book ends with a useful appendix of resources for anyone interested in tracking down some of the rarer cultivars.
I thoroughly enjoyed this exceptional book. It is a definitive guide for anyone interested in hydrangeas. I give Hydrangeas for American Gardens five out of five sunflowers.

Customer Reviews:
Hydrangeas.......2005-09-04
I like this book, but don't love it. I would have liked to have more information on an extended variety of Hydrangeas. However, not knowing the species names maybe I misunderstood. It is useful in how to care for, plant, and choose the right plant. I would recommend it for a Hydrangea lover.
Most comprehensive authority on Hydrangeas.......2001-02-01
This is the best book on hydrangeas in print today. Only one other (Hydrangeas, by Millet) even comes close. Because this book is so well organized, it is extemely easy to learning all about hydrangeas - their botanical structure, the different species and how they grow. One can immediately see the differences between hydrangeas - how large they will get, how large their blooms will be, what colors they might become, and the shape of the bloom. The illustrations are beautiful and leave one dreaming of a garden full of these beauties.
A valuable reference for hydrangea lovers.......2000-06-13
This is the most comprehensive source of information on hydrangeas that I have ever seen. There is detailed advice on every aspect of growing hydrangeas, including soil preparation, watering, and the effects of color in hydrangeas due to soil content. Generous illustrations show the different types of leaves on the various types of hydrangeas. The most valuable part of the book is a section devoting a full page to specific varieties and shows a photo, characteristics in chart format and a detailed narrative description. This book is well worth the price!

You get a lot for your money in this little gem........2003-06-01
This is a terrific little inexpensive book on hydrangeas. It was published in 2001/2002 by a New Zealand horticulturist. The pictures are luscious and most are labeled with specific variety names. However, this is not just a coffee table book. It contains easy to understand, accurate information on growing hydrangeas. The chapter on pruning is excellent and includes a section on pruning tree form hydrangeas. I would highly recommend this book.
good book.......2003-05-07
Every page has color pictures on it. The bulk of the book describes each variety of hydrangea. There's a little info on planting.

Had a hard time putting this book down.......2003-03-13
For a few nights, I stayed up way too late reading this book. It has a nimble, imaginative plot that grabbed my interest early and held it to the end. The story juxtaposes the present and the past in a way that might seem implausible. But Gershon makes it work extraordinarily well. Readers also get a fascinating look into modern medicine.
thriller from asheviller.......2003-03-08
Charles Gershon has written a compelling mystery filled with medical intrigue and Jewish history. His knowledge of both combined with his southern voice is unique.
What a talented author!.......2003-03-07
This is the best book I have read in many years - a wonderful story, well developed characters, tight dialogue. A young doctor who grew up in a small Southern town, raised by parents who were Holocaust survivors, is working successfully in a large city and finds himself surrounded by corruption. The author's style is reminiscent of John Grisham, Nelson Demille, and Leon Uris - three of my favorites. I enjoyed this book so much that I have given copies to friends, and everyone who has read it has raved. I impatiently await this talented author's next novel.

Poetic.......2007-03-21
If you are looking for real practical advice better buy Glyn Church books or the Gardener's guide. For real deep insight Michael Dirr's book is invaluable. But this book, which is rather useless as a practical guide, has the power of really showing the beauty and poesy of the flowers. The photographs are outstanding and really inspiring, and I think it could be appreciated by beginners and experts alike.
Don't.......2005-01-23
It's not worth the money. The plants are not correctly identified by botanical name and the information is unreliable. Buy Dr. Dirr's book.

Beatiful pictures but short on practical advice.......1999-07-16
The pictures are beautiful, making this a great 'coffee table' book. But the practical advice on how to care for Hydrangeas is skimpy.

Book Description
Famed for their durability, beauty, and diversity, hydrangeas are enjoying a renaissance in today's gardens. These classic garden shrubs provide bold color — from pink to purple, blue to white — in midsummer to midautumn, when few other plants are in bloom. Many hundreds of dramatic species, hybrids, and horticultural selections are available to the enthusiast to fill every possible niche in the garden. For the first time, a thorough encyclopedia shows in full color the range of flowering treasures available. With complete information on cultivation, propagation, and pests and diseases, The Encyclopedia of Hydrangeas promises to help every discerning gardener ensure planting success. Lavishly illustrated with approximately 800 photographs, the concise descriptions present more than 1000 hydrangea species, subspecies, varieties, and cultivars. All types of hydrangeas are included, from blousy mopheads to delicate lacecaps, from oakleafs to climbers. This incredible resource provides gardeners with the tools needed to discover the many true gems in this lovely group of plants.

Customer Reviews:
The Perfect Blank Book.......2004-02-05
The Hydrangea Journal is the perfect size to carry anywhere, the pages are soft white instead of bright white, the lines are not too far apart and not too close together. The journal handles nicely, and the price is just right. Great for daily journal keeping, writer's notes, or subject journals. Highly recommended.
