    Book Description

The first question to answer when bringing a newly acquired dog into the home is: “What shall we call him—or her?” This delightful little book offers guidelines and suggestions to help pet owners come up with the perfect answer. For instance, what is the canine's type and character? (It would be plain silly, for example, to name a Great Dane Fluffy; or to call a male canine of any breed, Brenda.) But you might want to make a fashion statement, or say something about yourself when you name that pooch. (For instance, a music lover might bless his puppy with a name like Beethoven or Vivaldi.) Perhaps the author's wisest suggestion is to hold a family conference, simply to make certain that everybody—including the dog—is comfortable with the new name. Here, in any event, are 1000 ideas for naming that puppy. They're listed alphabetically, and enhanced with dozens of endearing color photos.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a useable book on Orientals.......2003-02-06

Stone does not make the assumption, as so many writers about Oriental rugs do, that he knows what the reader wants. Instead, he provides an exhaustive, impartial spectrum of places, conditions, qualities, methods, and types affiliated with Oriental rugs, from earliest known times to the present. Stone manages to keep his work from being dull by interlarding it with astringent observations and keeping his entries brutally essential. Whoever did the layout of this work deserves kudos, too-- it is easy to access, each entry is set off from the others so as to be memorable to those of us who are visual, and there is generous, attractive use of clearly-labeled graphics. I genuinely appreciate this matrix-like, non-linear expert treatment of Oriental rugs, and find myself reading it up like a novel. The only thing I have found lacking so far is an entry on arbash.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!.......1998-06-13

In the rug world there is almost a constant competition of scholarship. Very rarely does one person so dominate his field as to be the indisputable authority. One of those rare exceptions is Peter Stone. One rug restoration expert told me that there will never be another major book on rug repair in my life time because "Oriental Carpet Repair" by Peter Stone says it all. Stone's new book the "Oriental Rug Lexicon" may well exceed "Oriental Carpet Repair" as a scholarly triumph. If you are at all serious about collecting or if your rugs are anything more than floor coverings to you, you need this book.

The Definative Guide To Rugs, Carpets, and Trappings What Stone has done is to make one large dictionary of rug terms. He has identified and defined them in an interesting and informative manner. As soon as I received the Lexicon I decided to put it to use. The first job was to decipher a page of notes I had made on dyes and dye sources used in oriental carpets that someone had given me. To have a source where I can double check the difference between a flavenol and a luteolin is invaluable. Other questions are solved just as easily such as what is a Medici Mamaluk versus a regular Mamaluk. Rug books have so many alternate spellings that it is nice to have a source that confirms that a Khorjin, Kharjin, Khordjin, and a Khurdzhin, are all the same thing. The book is designed like a dictionary and it is easy to look up individual words. It is not designed to be read cover to cover but as I spot-checked the definitions I found some thing interesting and fun on virtually every page. As long as I am mentioning spot-checking let me say that I spotted no errors. If, indeed, there are no errors, inaccuracies or mistakes, I will be astounded. There is to be found a wealth of rug terms with all the common alternative spellings including some that I have not encountered until now. All in all, it is an amazing resource.

The layout of the book is superb. It is packed with informati! on without being crowded. There are many more color pictures than I would have expected with a book of this type and there is an abundance of helpful sketches and line art to illustrate and illuminate Stone's points. Just this week a good friend who has a world class rug collection told me I "have" to buy three books if I want to keep up with things. The total for all three is over $1000 US. I mention this only to make the point that at a list price of $29.95 (US currency for softcover edition, $60 for hardcover edition) Stone's book is about as close to free we are likely to see for a serious rug book. Let me sum up my opinion in just three words: BUY THIS BOOK!

        Book Description

This is among the first books published by Timber Press, and after more than two decades it continues to be one of our signature bestsellers. A comprehensive source of information on the culture, identification, and nomenclature of Japanese maples, it describes each of the 320 cultivars of Acer palmatum and 60 cultivars of other Japanese maple species, plus briefly mentions 150 promising new plants. The index lists every horticultural name published, ensuring that Japanese Maples will continue to be the foremost reference book on this wonderfully versatile collection of ornamental plants.

This fully updated third edition has been revised by Peter Gregory and is even more international than its predecessors. It adds approximately 100 important new maple hybrids and selections that have been introduced since the last revision by Vertrees in 1987, bringing to nearly 400 the total number of plants described. Nomenclature has been updated to conform to current standards, many additional photographs have been included, and descriptions have been rearranged for greater ease of reference.

Though I have not digested the entire volume yet, I am constantly consulting its pages. As a fairly novice collector of these plants, I have found this book to be indespinsable. The introduction of new cultivars as well as many new photographs make volume three a superior reference.

A very informed and illustrated book with almost every 300+ cultivar imaginable. Also gives cultivar no longer cultivated, with all the names of cultivar including many misnames used and cultivar which have been produced which are not confirmed or are instable. The book has a detail list of species in brief form for quick reference when planting of considering cultivar.I look forward to the updated with the newer cultivar.
The only thing lacking is more detail on growing and producing cultivar. eg.grafting, cutting, and pruning, etc which you have to get from other texts.

This is an excellent book. J.D. Vertrees did a wonderful job of classifying the various Japanese Maples. The revision and expansion done by Peter Gregory has added to J.D.'s original work.

The pictures are excellelnt. This is a must have book for every Bonsai/Japanese maple enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars Newer is Not Always Better.......2006-04-24

Before you consider purchasing this book, I strongly suggest you try to find the second edition, which, while less comprehensive, is better organized. In addition, a comparison of the two finds that some of the best images in the second edition were not carried over to the third.
The worst shortcoming of both editions is the lack of images of fully grown trees. It's nice to know what the leaves look like but, if you are trying to identify a particular plant or select one for your garden, you need much more than is provided here. Of course, with the incredible number of Acer Palmatum cultivars, it is unlikely any one book can do more than scratch the surface.
Nevertheless, the second edition is the first book on Japanese Maples I would buy - as a matter of fact, I just bought one after mine wandered.

        Book Description

With their delicate foliage, seasonal color changes, and intricate pattern of branching, Japanese maples are among the most popular and suitable plants for bonsai design. In this long-awaited book, internationally renowned expert Peter Adams discusses both the specific horticultural needs of Japanese maples as bonsai subjects and illustrates proven techniques for creating and maintaining beautiful specimens. Although aimed at an audience that has some familiarity with bonsai techniques, the book deliberately shows a mix of bonsai at different stages in their training, so that less experienced enthusiasts can gain new ideas and inspiration from trees that are "works in progress." Much more than a mere "how-to" book, Bonsai with Japanese Maples is a forthright attempt to look at bonsai as art objects and to critique and assess them from an artist's perspective.

Bonsai with Japanese Maples by Peter Adams has all you will ever need to know about maples in bonsai. Excellent colour photos, techniques are explained in adequate depth and it is well worth the price, I paid shipping to Australia just for this product. The only issue of concern is that one should read a basic bonsai book for a few clarifications on wording, that is to say it is written for an intermediate-bonsai audience.

5 out of 5 stars After all these years.......2007-01-05

I first saw this book as a bonsai student but it was already out of print. After years of searching, and seeing prices over $150, I am really happy to see it in re-print. It is the seminal Japanese maple book with many ideas that can be used for any deciduous tree. I strongly recommend it for anyone doing bonsai.

              Book Description

Based on research conducted in the mid-1970s, this book profiles the regional development of Japanese cultural traditions in British Columbia, southern Alberta, and metropolitan Toronto. The authors examine how long-held Japanese beliefs and practices responded to the social upheaval caused by diaspora, internment, prejudice, and cultural assimilation, and provide us with a snapshot of Japanese culture in post-war Canada, 100 years after the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants. Firsthand accounts, archival photographs, and evocative descriptions round out this fascinating look at a culture in transition which still retains its essential identity and ultimately influences the culture around it.

                Description:
Because aerial survey is a powerful tool to characterize landscape features, it is often applied to conserve biological diversity. I present such an example using aerial survey to locate new populations of the endangered maple species, Japanese red maple (Acer pycnanthum K. Koch), and its supporting ecosystems. Japanese red maple is an endemic, obligate wetland species of central Honshu Island, Japan. Unlike its sister species, American red maple (Acer rubrum L.), Japanese red maple has a restricted natural distribution and is listed as an endangered species. Despite its endangered status, information of the current occurrence is extremely limited. Therefore, plane flights were conducted in early spring of 2003 and 2004 when brilliant red flowers readily indicate the location of new populations and their wetland ecosystems. Sixteen sites with three or more clones were successfully located by this aerial survey approach, which increased the number of natural Japanese red maple sites of the database by 34% and the area of natural sites by 54%. Fifteen were new sites that are either unknown or not widely known to the public. Additional new sites in rugged terrain still require ground verification. The 16 sites identified by aerial survey are markedly larger in area and population size and less disturbed by silvicultural management than those of sites that were identified by conventional methods (i.e., literature search, ground search, and interviews with local residents). The new sites were all wetlands that have narrowly escaped from intensive human development near Nagoya, the third most highly populated area of Japan. Aerial survey not only increased the number of individuals and populations of Japanese red maple but more significantly it identified the endangered, near-natural wetland ecosystems characterized by this species. This remarkable discovery facilitates many new conservation initiatives such as educating landowners, characterizing ecosystem properties and biological diversity, and establishing new natural preserves. The aerial survey method is readily applicable to other species that also have distinctive crown features. Because the survey approach is easily applied, scientists, conservation groups, and managers of public and private forests are encouraged to apply this approach for management and conservation of suitable rare or endangered species and ecosystems that support them.

                  Description:
Japanese red maple, Acer pycnanthum, is an endangered species that grows only in small, discrete wetland ecosystems in central Honshu, Japan. Because of its rarity and beauty, public attention and management are typically focused only on this overstory species. For example, mowing and tree cutting of understory and ground-cover plants are practices frequently applied to develop easily accessible, park-like stands. To examine the ecological effects of these practices and discuss the role of silvicultural practices in conservation of these ecosystems, plant species composition and diversity were studied at six, unmanaged near-natural ecosystems, and they were compared with that of one managed ecosystem where tree cutting and mowing have been conducted. In addition, changes of plant species composition and diversity were investigated at one site where tree cutting was conducted. Results indicated that the near-natural ecosystems are characterized by high plant species diversity, consistent occurrence of endangered and endemic species, and virtual lack of non-native species. Plant species diversity was markedly greater in the understory and ground-cover layers than in the overstory, which was characterized by high abundance of large maple trees. In contrast, at the ecosystem where tree cutting was conducted and the ground cover annually mowed for 18 years, stem density and diversity of the understory layer were extremely low compared to those of the near-natural ecosystems. In the ground-cover layer, the species composition was markedly different from that of the near-natural ecosystems due to the presence of non-native species and species favoring open, disturbed habitats. After two years at the ecosystem where tree cutting only was conducted, a significant decrease of diversity index H' was recorded in the ground cover. The decrease was in large part due to the spread of dwarf bamboo, which was favored by increased light irradiance. At both managed ecosystems, regeneration of Japanese red maple was lacking. Because of these dramatic changes, intensive silvicultural practices should be restricted to a few exceptional places where public interest is paramount. I recommend that silvicultural practices only be used for significant and specific conservation purposes, such as removal of invasive species. Special concern regarding the spread of dwarf bamboo is required when managers plan tree cutting at sites where the bamboo grows within or adjacent to the site.
