Book Description
They may be known as man's best friend, but as the writers in this poignant, funny, and dramatic collection know, there's no gender divide when it comes to canines. Whether walking down the street, gathering at the dog park, hitting the open road, or spending one too many nights together on the couch in front of the TV, a woman and her dog are an enduring pair. And there are many who consider their dogs to be members of their family and themselves to be full-fledged dog moms, even if they're single.
From the family dog who takes on the anxiety of a family as the writer's sister battles breast cancer, to the compelling tale of a woman searching for her furry friend in the aftermath of September 11th, to the blind and deaf dog who teaches everyone about keeping on truckin' no matter what predicaments she gets into, the essays in this anthology get at the heart of love — and yes, sometimes love-hate-relationships women have with the dogs in their lives.

Canine critters.......2007-09-28
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection, and highly recommend the book to anyone who likes animals. It is especially interesting comparing personalities and the types of canine-critters we choose. Of course, it makes you wonder who chooses who. If you like dogs: James Herriot's Dog Stories: Warm And Wonderful Stories About The Animals Herriot Loves Best and Ghost in the Rainbow
A great Book!!.......2007-06-06
This is such a great book I read It in one day because I could not put it down!!! The stories are funny, sad, sweet and cover just about every emotion. I loved it and would highly recommend it if you love books about dogs !!!
Okay.......2007-06-05
The best part of this book was honestly the cover. The content inside was pretty good but not fabulous. There was one story, I admit, that almost brought me to tears, but other than that, it wasn't what I would call great literature. Others might like it more, maybe it's just me.
Excellent arrangement of short stories.......2007-03-18
Woman's Best Friend was a great collection of short stories about dogs. I loved the realistic nature of the book as not all the stories were about how great, smart or funny each woman's dog was. In fact there are a couple sad stories that remind you that dogs are ultimately animals with instincts and breed characteristics and some times they aren't a woman's best friend. I loved the thumbnail photos of the dogs within the short stories so you could really envision them in their setting. The story "First Born" by Lisa Vollmer was one that resonated with me in particular and would with any woman who considers her dog to be part of her family. Highly recommended for anyone - male or female - who has had a dog make an impact on their life.
gret dog book!.......2007-01-05
I thought the stories of dogs and thier owners was a wonderful idea. Loved the book.
P.S. I was in one of the stories.....a little bias

A little book, but a powerful book.......2003-10-19
I was going through some tough times when I found this book...facing the inevitable loss of my dog through cancer. I sat down on a stool in the bookstore and read it - cover to cover - with tears streaming down my face. Then I bought the book and took it home with me. In the following months (and years), I can't imagine the number of times I've read this book...or just sat and looked at the photos.
My dog died a few months after I found the book, but it was an unbelievable comfort to have it sitting on my table...to pick up and read when the mood struck...knowing there were other women out there that loved their dogs as much as I did mine.
That was years ago. It isn't a big book, but the photos and words speak volumes and volumes to those of us that love our animals, whether we are facing their loss, have already lost them, or are living happily with them, day-to-day.
Louise Barbara and Taylor Cohen? If you are listening, I want to thank you for publishing this book! I can honestly say your little book is one of my most cherished possessions.
As a dog Mom, I had to have this book!.......2002-01-06
A dear friend had let me borrow her copy. After reading it, I had to get a copy. This book will warm your heart and the images are just wonderful. It's great to know others feel the same way as I when it comes to their dogs. Dogs share such a wonderful unconditional love and these stories are just one example. Get it for the dog lover in your life.
Dogs and Their Women.......2001-06-29
A wonderful book! I bought this book when seeking solace following the death of my first dog companion. It gave me comfort and hope to see that there were many more special dogs out there, (and I have since adopeted another one!).
A celebration of a universal relationship........2000-02-14
This is a book that could be read all over the world, and be loved. (In fact, an international version would be a nice idea.) Any of us who have had or known a special dog find ourselves in this book. My dog Dilly writes her own page every day. You must read about these common and uncommon women and their extraordinary dogs!
the pictures say a thousand words.......1998-10-15
a book sure to be treasured and read many times over for all women whose faithful companions have added a depth of love like no other could ever be capable of...surely our creator had a mission to fulfill when our wonderful companions came to us. he knew women needed them more than they would ever need us but in unison a bond like no other could ever be duplicated by any human being..a keepsake and a gift that will be treasured forever.

Get this for the dog lover in your life.........2002-01-06
I got the first book "Dogs and Their Women" and I was so glad to find another book had been made. The images and stories are really great. If you liked the first book, get this one too. I've got them both and I'm glad I did!
The first book was better.......1999-11-30
While this is a wonderful collection, I prefer the authors' first book, "Dogs and Their Women," which I found to be more moving. Both are great gifts for the dog lover in your life!

Book Description
"One of the nicest things.is that you don't have to be a musician to love it. It's a browser's delight."--The New York Times
It's the best-looking musical encyclopedia ever! Using a completely visual approach, this ultimate reference has over 4,000 drawings showcasing the evolution of instruments--and music--from primitive whistles to electric guitars (complete with fuzz box and pedal). Exquisite illustrations accompany each entry, with painstaking detail and attention to structure, function, and decoration. Most extraordinary is the range of instruments included: orchestral, popular, classical, ancient, and folk. Classed by family groups, they are cross-referenced with material on geographical distribution and historical periods. Plus scores, diagrams of correct playing techniques, major figures, and other fascinating information provided by over forty researchers, writers, and illustrators, in cooperation with 200 scholars from 20 countries!

Very informative.......2002-11-23
I saw this book in my local library and liked it so much I had to go out and buy a copy for myself.
Complete and Exhaustive for the modern Samplist.......2001-04-14
I am a digital samplist, and therefore need to be able to get an idea of what any instrument in the world may look like so I can associate an image with sounds in my libraries. This book has really helped me get a handle on world instruments. I recommend it highly for those needing such documentation.
Thorough and strong on native instruments..........2001-01-18
Encyclopedia showing every musical instrument you can think of, from its primitive origins to modern orchestral versions. No photos, but good detailed drawings that show multiple variations of native instruments. Minimal but clear discussion on construction, method of playing, sound production etc. Attractive layout, thorough and apparently scholarly. Originally British, published in 1976.
Don't trust it - It's not even a good picture-book!.......2000-05-23
I have found several instances of bad scholarship in this book concerning instruments of which I have some knowledge (The section on harpsichords, for example, is total trash). I am therefore unwilling to trust it in areas where my knowledge of a specific instrument group is limited. Usually in books of this sort you can forget the words and look at the pictures; not so here - they're a combination of bad line drawings and blotchy derivations of photographs used to skimp on printing costs.
A Most Excellent Illustrated Guide !.......1998-09-16
This book is the very best guide to the instruments of the world I have ever seen. I bought it back in the 80's when it was first published, and I still use it today when I need to see what a Kalimba from the Sudan might look like (or other such unusual specific). The Diagram Group is the fantastic assemblage of artists that illustrated and produced this most handsome volume. Each page is a masterpiece of design and "infographics" and, although printed in two-color only, shines with a level of detail and expertise you will not find elsewhere.
I can't say enough about how good this book is. If you have any reason to enjoy the vast number of musical instruments mankind has created, and if you want to know the hows, whys and wheres about musical instruments, then get this book! I think it's so good that I'm ordering a new one to replace my dog-eared copy.

Customer Reviews:
Can't wait to try it!.......2002-11-16
I found this book inspirational (her pictured collages are beautiful) and helpful, even for a rank beginner like me. Her instructions are clear and step-by-step, and it seems like a process simple enough to do, although time-consuming enough that I'll have to block out an afternoon to get started. She gives lots of ideas for embellishments for your collage, and I like it that most of them are easily available. I gave it five stars because I don't find any glaring omissions or problems. If you're looking for a craft that emphasizes color and texture, and simple enjoyment, this sure looks to be one to try.

Customer Reviews:
good ideas, great starting point.......2001-09-07
As an artist myself, i have always been fascinated with the wide range of possibilities that come from making your own paper. When I picked up the book i already knew the basics, and had been making paper by hand for quite some time. I really liked the way she included many ways to push the papermaking process a step further (ie. watercolor dyeing, embossing etc.) to actually transform the paper into something more "artistic". The projects outlined in the book i saw as really great STARTING points for my own work. I felt that many of her final projects had a Martha Stewart quality that didn't really appeal to me. My suggestion? Make your own templates for the projects instead of using hers in the back of the book. Your final product will be much more rewarding if it's your own creation.
Best Collage Book. Great instruction & Many unique projects........2000-05-02
This is the best collage book I have ever read. I love the look of collage, but have always had a hard time getting started. The beautiful artwork and advice here have helped me to create many masterpieces.
The author starts out by taking you step by step though the papermaking process. Materials used include mostly common household items and scraps. Making a mold & deckle is also demonstrated.
Next, many interesting surface techniques are covered including wet/dry embossing, glue-gun embossing, coffee overdyeing, watercolor dyeing, & crayon resist. The collage section has tips on collecting, sorting, arrangement, & materials.
I loved the many unique projects that followed including making envelopes, greeting cards, fabric motifs, paper sculptures & kaleidoscope collages. There are also some templates and a great list of suppliers in the back
The most elegant and inspirational guide to collage.......2000-01-20
I saw the ads for this book in Somerset Studio (coincidently this book is very like their style of photos and intructions), and had to have it the day it was released! The Photos are glorious and illustrate the authors points well. You will love this book if you are a begginer or have been pack-ratting and collaging for years!
Clearly written & illustrated, for beginners & experienced........1999-05-13
I received this book on ILL from a library yesterday and am buying it for myself today. Everyone who handled the book in the library was impressed by its beauty. It seems clearly written, easy enough for beginners and stimulating for more experienced crafters.
