Customer Reviews:
Not so "Ultimate" by today's standard........2007-06-12
This is an interesting picture book to compare how other aquarists keep their tank. However, most of the aquariums included in the book are pretty average in today's standard. There are numerous more matured and better looking tanks over the internet forums not to mention almost all tanks are in the USA only. Many of the pictures are also very blur. I would be very interested to buy a second book of the serie covering more "Ultimate" aquariums and with better picture quality.
WOW.......2007-01-23
This is an excellent book for those that just want to look at some incredible marine aquariums or those looking for information on starting their own masterpiece.
Big Aquarium Dream Systems Only.......2006-07-14
A nice book with some good information and lots of pictures. But only of real use if you are putting together a big system. Like over 200 gallons!
Excellent Book.......2006-07-09
This is a well organized book that reviews some of the best marine aquariums around. It gives great detail on the mechanics of these systems as well as honest pros/cons of each. Extrememly entertaining and full of information. I have many aquarium books and this ranks in my top five.
Excellent Resource!.......2005-08-24
This book is direct and clear. It has detailed descriptions, great pictures of fantastic marine aquariums, the equipment used, dimensions, water chemistry, etc.
If you need a resource to help you plan or gather ideas on a reef tank, this should be the first stop. A hobbyist could spend thousands of dollars experimenting in search for the right equipment, or use this book.
The book is elaborate enough for a novice to understand the concepts and technical requirements for a marine tank.
The only warning I would have is to the hobbyist who is looking for instructions on how to build a reef tank or details about equipment. This book does not elaborate on construction. But regardless, if your already in the hobby its superb, if you've just started it will prove valuable. I consider this a back bone in my comparative analyze of my own aquarium.
On top of that, the price of this book is really inexpensive for what you get.

Book Description
Legend has it that the forest of the world are inhabited by elusive creatures known as "Wood Spirits." Tom Wolfe finds them everywhere and brings them to life in this delightful new instructional book. Using found wood such as driftwood, roots, and old beams from dilapidated barns, he leads the reader through the carving of wondrous, fanciful faces, that are both enchanting and beautiful. On a smaller scale, Tom also finds the Wood Spirits in walking sticks, creating treasures that are handsome and functional at the same time. Tom has been carving these Spirits for years, and they are constantly in demand. Now he leads the carver, step-by-step, through their creation, each step illustrated in beautiful color photographs. An extensive gallery is included, jam-packed with examples and ideas for the reader's own work.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for the very young .......2007-06-19
The book is good for very young carvers. The pictures are great and the author does show everything. As a matter for discussion the author provides too much detail and if you need lots of detail then this book is what young starters can use effectively.
Hoped for more.......2005-07-31
Although it does cover the subject and offer examples for inspiration, it does so in very broad strokes. I had hoped for mre istruction and less inspiration.
Informative, Instructive, Well written, Great pictures.......1999-01-29
I used this book as a basis for all my carvings, This book actually started me in the buisness of woodcarving and I created my first Walking stick from the instructions therein.
The best carving instruction I have ever received........1997-05-06
Two years ago I purchased this book and a set of six tools. My goal was to create a hobby that was rewarding and relaxing. I can truthfully say that I have never been more satisfied with any purchase. I have found a world of enjoyment from the simple act of cutting wood. In three days, I will exhibit in my first show, The Tupelo Gum Tree Festival, Tupelo, MS. I have never been more relaxed and proud of anything I have done before. Thank you Tom Wolfe!

Book Description
Poor Margaret is waking up to another bad day. Ever since her parents died, her brother and sister have made her sweep the floors, chop the wood, cook the meals, feed the pigs, and anything else they can think to demand. Selfish, mean, and twice as big as Margaret, they always get their way. When at last Margaret has had enough, she runs away into the forest. Just as she is wondering how she will survive, she comes upon an old lady with a very sad story: a dog has run off with her walking stick, and she can't do a thing without it. When the old lady promises Margaret a reward of three gold coins for its safe return, the girl readily agrees. Little does Margaret know that the old lady is really a witch, her reward a trick, and her walking stick a magic stick the witch has used to make a thousand miserable wishes come true . . .
Customer Reviews:
Cute, funny fairy tale.......2006-01-11
My 5-1/2 year old and 4 year old boys loved this story and asked me to read it to them again and again immediately after listening to it the first time. FYI - - It was one of more than 20 books on our school's reading award list for Kindergarten - 2nd graders. Very engaging and entertaining. Good lessons about being kind/good vs. being mean/evil. A dog snatches a witch's magic walking stick, and the witch asks a girl to get it back for her. The girl had been mistreated at home by her older siblings since their parents died. Caveats: I did not like the fact that it mentioned that the parents' died, although it was just in passing, so I edited it to say the parents were not there. It is also worth pointing out to others who may be concerned that the girl runs away from home. I edited that out, too. I just don't like bringing up subjects unnecessarily. I said she left her home and left it vague as to how long she was planning to stay away. I know, I know ... but, I'm sorry, I'm just not reading that to my children. Nevertheless, we loved the story.
5 stars from gobbysreviews.......2005-09-26
"There once was a very old witch who had a magic walking stick. Over the years she had used it to make a thousand miserable wishes come true...."
Susan Meddaugh has written and illustrated a nifty, new fairy tale. It's an action / adventure thriller for your little ones. Good versus Evil. You may have noticed that the good guys always win in action / adventure thrillers. And then everyone lives happily ever after--well at least the Cinderella-like Margaret, the doggy, and all the cute critters in the forest do.
As for Margaret's older brother and sister, let's just say they had a well- deserved attitude adjustment. The situation at home went from:
" 'Margaret!' they both yelled together. 'Make the breakfast. We want pancakes and we want them now!'
" 'You wouldn't do this if Mother and Father were still alive,' cried the girl.
" 'That's true,' they agreed. 'Now, don't forget to feed the pigs.'
" 'I think I just did,' said Margaret. But not so loud that they could hear."
to:
"Then Margaret said to her brother and sister, 'The next time you think about being mean to me remember what happened today.'
"Still, just to be sure, she silently wished that if they ever forgot, her brother would have an overwhelming urge to slap mustard on his head and her sister would start to oink."
It's amazing how the proper application of a magic walking stick can quickly and permanently change people's attitudes--which, in this case, is really good because the magic walking stick was as old as the witch was. As a result, Margaret unknowingly used up the last of its magic on her nasty, mean brother and sister. But, we won't tell, and I doubt Margaret and her new doggy will either.
As for the witch? Well, when we last saw her, she looked like she was having a really bad hair day. It probably wasn't improved by the big grins plastered all over the faces of the woodland critters. And I could swear the mouse and 'coon were clapping.
Who says stories about witches (or Halloween) have to be scary? Certainly not Susan Meddaugh. Technically though, this isn't a "Halloween" book because the Library of Congress considers _The Witch's Walking Stick_ to be Juvenile fiction about witches, wishes, and magic. But aren't witches and magic a big part of the Halloween holiday?
So go ahead and be just as creative as Susan Meddaugh was. Add it to your Halloween collection at home, school, or library. That's what I did because it's a fun, fairy tale--not another scary, monster / horror tale for Halloween. _The Witch's Walking Stick_ is definitely worth 5 stars from gobbysreviews. Read it to your little ones, and...
ENJOY!

Book Description
The walking stick is a convenient and formidable weapon in the hands of a man trained to use it. With the carry and use of firearms and knives gradually becoming more restricted by law, the stick is becoming an increasingly viable implement of practical self-defense for ordinary citizens. This book by "an officer of the Indian Police" is an extraordinary example of a practical martial art text of the early 20th century. The entire range of defensive and offensive skills is discussed and demonstrated, including guards, strikes, combinations, counterattacks, feints and tricks, double-handed techniques and training drills.

Deeply evocative of the San Juan Islands, the recipes and ingredients of Christina's Cookbook give readers a flavorful tour through all of the area's eddies, bays, and gardens. Just for starters, readers can try recipes for Crab Fondue and Fennel Breadsticks, Mussels with Garden Lilies and Curry, or Singing Scallops with Sweet Cicely and Cider. Add to this a side dish of charming tales and worldwide adventures, and the innovative recipes become all the more enticing. Roasted Halibut comes with a story on how it got its glaze; a millionaire playboy in the South of France is behind the delicious lamb recipe; and if readers want to discover how icy Doug Fir Granitas came to be served at the James Beard House, they can open up to the chapter on desserts (which also includes Poached Cherries and Lavender Ice Cream). For fans of authentic northwest cooking and seafood alike, this colorful cookbook is deliciously entertaining.
Customer Reviews:
Easy, Elegant Food from a Beautiful Island.......2007-09-24
We purchased this book during a visit to the most beautiful of the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State, Orcas Island. The food reminds me so much about what I love about Orcas Island. Fresh, natural, organic foods prepared simply to create an elegant evening for any home. You will love this book. Every recipe is a supreme delight!
Good ratio of keeper recipes.......2006-01-16
Christina opened her restaurant on beautiful Orcas Island over 25 years ago and it's still a restaurant we recommend to visitors as a must. Before it was fashionable she began her restaurant committed to fresh local ingredients and seasonal recipes. We love her cookbook because it's designed that way with pages dedicated to tomatoes, apples or oysters and we love her stories about growing up in the Northwest and how that shaped her vision of food. The best thing is the percentage of recipes we'd make again - always our judge of a great cookbook. We love her crab fondue, her steamed clams with thyme and lemon vodka, her picnic chicken liver terrine, roasted vegetable salad with tomato caper vinegrette, hot and sour fish soup... and there's lots more. Makes your mouth water doesn't it!!!!!!
Simply the most wonderful food and people!.......2005-10-21
My wife and I enjoyed a night full of incredible food and music at Christina's on the evening of our wedding. The reception was attended by friends who took planes, trains, and ferries from as far away as Boston, Cincinnati, Chicago, and Ann Arbor... everyone fell in love with Christina's food, Bruce's smile, and Christopher's Hot Monks. A perfect night to a perfect wedding day. Christina's cookbook is a wonderful reminder of the unique flavors and fresh tastes that has always distinguished her restaurant as simply the best!
Stories of an Island Gem.......2004-12-08
As customers who have already enjoyed Christina's restaurant--which, as expats visiting from France, my family and I stumbled into 20 years ago--we may be biased. But this is more than a compendium of the wonderful cuisine we have enjoyed there, more than the sum of welcome and ambiance (and WHAT a view from the deck overlooking the waters of Eastsound!). Christina knows how to write as well as to cook. The little essays about discovering food as she grew up in the Pacific Northwest bring the recipes to life. They also provide a capsule history of a generation: from the wheat fields of eastern Washington to the burgeoning restaurants of Portland, Oregon, to the lovely little island north of Seattle (Orcas) that is home to the gem she created as a single mom a couple of decades ago. Read the book. Go to the restaurant. Live some history!

Book Description
Hawaii is an island paradise for its beautiful scenery and its delicious food. Nowhere else in the world can you find the wide assortment of fresh foods from the land and ocean that make for exciting innovated culinary creations. Add to that the unique ethnic diversity of the islands' population originating from Asia, Europe, America and the South Pacific, and you have a distinctive cuisine found nowhere else in the world.
Hawai`i chefs are especially fond of using fresh tropical fruits in their cooking. The flavors of these fruits are preserved in products that are easy to use in creating the delicious foods of paradise.

Haute cuisine, island style--an attractive, small gift book........2006-04-12
Originally from the East Coast of the US, with twenty years experience as a chef, Michael Gallagher combines his background in traditional mainland cookery with that of the Pacific Rim and Hawaii, producing a book that is a pot pourri of unique flavors. Featuring the fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables which are staples in Hawaiian local cooking, he presents gorgeously illustrated creations--14 appetizers, 10 salads and light entrees, 11 seafood entrees, 12 meat and poultry entrees, and 10 "sweet beginnings and endings."
Many recipes are delightfully simple--Guava Almond Crusted Mahi Mahi (my favorite), Sauteed Opakapaka with Guava Strawberry Beurre Blanc, and Grilled Pork Chop with Toasted Maui Onion Mustard--while others are more time-consuming. The Shrimp Lumpia (Filipino spring roll) with Poha Chili Dipping Sauce requires several steps to cut and prepare all the ingredients, roll them in the lumpia wrappers, and deep fry. The Maui Onion Salsa Chicken Burritos are also time-consuming for the same reasons.
For the most part the recipes are clear and easy to follow, after the cook has chopped and prepared all the ingredients. Most entrees require 10 - 15 minutes of last minute cooking, often on the grill. Two recipes, the Guava Waffles and Guava French toast, really require no recipes at all, since the "guava" is the result of commercial guava syrup. The desserts are heavy on the flavored creme brulees and full-fat ice cream, and look beautiful, but those who are not fans of regular, old-fashioned bread pudding probably won't be excited by the Guava Macadamia Nut Bread Pudding.
When used in combination with some make-ahead recipes for other parts of a meal, this cookbook allows a cook to present a fresh and tasty entree, without too much time away from his/her guests. I use this book primarily for the fish preparations and for the terrific sauces and marinades--the Guava Chili Sauce (for ribs), the Toasted Maui Onion Vinaigrette, the Poha Chili Dipping Sauce, and the Hawaiian Pepper Jelly Sauce (for lamb). An attractive and useful gift book containing 57 recipes, Gourmet Cuisine is filled with good ideas and beautiful presentations. n Mary Whipple

Book Description
Contemporary Pacific style is a vibrant blend that mixes cultures from the many islands of the South Pacific with colonial influences. This colorful new book explores both the traditional architecture and crafts of the region and contemporary design concepts. Covering Samoa, Niue, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands, Pacific Island Style looks at design and color inside private houses and out on the streets, the use of local materials and techniques, traditional houses, painting and stenciling techniques, colonial and modern houses, and other features such as the famous color-coded buses of Western Samoa. The traditional trademarks of Pacific Island style--attractive and natural materials, environment-enhancing design, indoor-outdoor living--are being found more and more all over the world. Not only a tribute to the arts and crafts of the Pacific Islands, this is also an inspiring book for anyone who wants to add some vivid Pacific style to their surroundings.

Traditional, Modest Architecture.......2006-06-28
I'm in agreement with the reviewer who wrote that this book is mostly about traditional not modern architecture and design. When I got this book, I was hoping that contempory would mean modern and upscale. This book does not deliver any of that and the book cover photo is not the type of designs that are found in the rest of the book so I was terribly disappointed. Eventually, I grew to tolerate the traditional design photos ( which are mostly of churches, huts, cane worker houses and store shacks), but if you're looking for upscale design ideas, select another book and relegate this one to a fond look at old, dilapidated island style.
A great invitation to visit the Pacific islands.......2001-05-22
A very nice book chock full of pictures. I was only a little bit disappointed by the lack of more interior photos. Having travelled to French Ploynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora) I was familiar with some of the pictures I saw. The book serves as a wonderful introduction to the landscape, homes, and lives of the islanders.
I highly recommend this book !
Superlative addition to design library reference collections.......2000-04-06

Jowitt and Shaw explore both the traditional architecture and crafts of the region as well as contemporary design concepts. the use of attractive and natural materials, environment-enhancing designs, indoor-outdoor living arrangements are all trademarks of the Pacific Island style and to be found world wide. Pacific Island Style covers Samoa, Niue, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands. Pacific Island Style admirably serves as a source of architectural and interior design references and ideas for anyone seeking to incorporate the islands' peaceful, natural style amidst modern surroundings. Pacific Island Style is a highly recommended addition to any personal or professional design library collection.

Book Description
This book, based on fieldwork spanning a decade, gives a comprehensive analysis of the musical life of a unique Polynesian community whose geographical isolation, together with a local ban on missionaries and churches, combine to allow its 600 members to maintain a level of traditional cultural practices unique to the region.
Takü is arguably the only location where traditional Polynesian religion continues to be practiced. This book explores the many ways in which spirit activities impact on both domestic and ritual life, how group singing and dancing give audible and visible expression to a variety of religious beliefs, and how spirit mediums relay songs and dances from the recent dead. Takü's community is well able to articulate the significance of their own strong performance tradition, and this book allows expert singers and dancers to speak passionately for themselves on subjects they understand intimately.
Musical ethnographies from the Pacific are rare. Like Moyle's earlier landmark volumes on Samoan and Tongan music, and also his trilogy on Australian Aboriginal music, this work will be of immense value to Pacific studies, and will assume a place among the recognized staples of ethnomusicological research.
