Customer Reviews:
Great book........2007-09-23
I really have enjoyed this book. It goes into detail on several points concerning aquarium fish that other books typically leave out. I learned something new every few paragraphs. It does lack a significant amount of pictures, but makes up for it with the amount of information that it includes. It has a what if...? section, on fish health, which is helpful. If you don't enjoy a lot of reading, this book isn't for you, however you may find it helpful, in that it gives you a heads up when information appears later on in the book, so you can skip ahead.
Fasinating and thorough this is the book your fish want you to read........2007-04-28
I disagree that this book is shallow. I've checked out dozens of books about fish... and bought several. This one had more information on actually taking care of fish than any other book in my public library. All the other books I have found on the subject have only a few first chapters on maintaining your aquaria. The whole rest of them are devoted to what is sometimes called "fish profiles" there is one or at best three pages devoted to a singular species. That may help a little if you haven't bought your fish yet, but you cannot buy every fish profiled. And those few pages will give only a very limited knowlege about whatever fish you decide on. There are entire books devoted to fish profiles called fish atlases which cover many more species of fish, they weigh a ton and are much better for selecting your tank inhabitants than a book that is half-manual, and half-atlas. Tropial Fishlopedia does not presume to be a fish atlas of individual species... In the books introduction pg.#8 at the begining of the second paragraph the authors say "This book deals with just one aspect of fishkeeping - the maintenace of freshwater tropical fish." and between the end of the second and begining of the third paragraphs, Chapter 3 pg.22 "A list of additional reading matter will be found in Appendix A.
We cannot stress too highly, or too often the need to research each species before deciding whether to keep it." It is unfair to complain that this book does not sufficently cover fish species when the authors make it so clear that this is not the aim of the book. It IS the most in-depth book on the MATINENCE of tropical freshwater aquariums that I have ever encountered. It delves into the facinating subject of your fishes behavior and motivation, how to observe your fish's actions and body language and interpret whether it is stressed by illness, tankmates, or simply preparing for mating. It covers water chemistry beyond just the 'nitrogen cycle'. It has taught me more about fishkeeping than all the other aquarium books I've ever read in my life and I'm not even halfway through this book! No, it isn't a stiring novel or an exciting cliff-hanging adventure. But it is a good book. The longer words seem carfully choosen so that the meaning is clearest to it's reader. If you care about your fish and think that the pleasure they give you is worth the effort of learning to keep them healthy... if you find aquariums facinate you and trigger your curiosity... if you just feel that your fishkeeping thumbs are brown instead of green and that you must be content with looking at a friends tank because you are not gifted or lucky enough to keep alive fish of your own... if any of these situations describe you, you may find Tropical Fishlopaedia thoroughly satisfying.
Too Generic and Shallow.......2006-07-09
This book is too generic and lacks the most important thing which is practical advice. One can find some useful information how to start a tank but lots of other books and websites can tell you the same things. The authors did not address in deapth the most important aspects the fishes and their diseases. They tried to encompass a wide spectrum of questions but did it in a shallow way. The book does not tell you anything interesting about individual fishes and does not provide practical assistance in identifying and treating diseseas.
Decent Information but an English Language Disaster.......2005-04-06
This book contains some useful information but the majority of it is far too shallow and fague. The writing within this book is a grammatical disaster. The author's writing style is convoluted, unneccessarily wordy and repetative. While this author may know a great deal about fish she is not a great (or even satisfactory writer). Anyone who has a slight sense of correct English or the fluidity of writing will get a headache from reading this.
Good Disease And Behavior Reference.......2005-01-15
This book is a good reference resource for general problems that may arise for the beginner to intermediate fishkeeper. Ms. Bailey sets up several chapters such as what behaviors are "normal" for certain species. There's another chapter dedicated to fish diseases. She describes what they are. Another portion of the book is dedicated to environmental causes of problems, such as temperature, osmotic stress, etc. Treatment plans are always offered. What is most helpful with this book is that it is set up in a question/answer format with the questions in bold font. The most important, albeit brief chapter, is how to euthanize a very sick fish. Many books ignore this. Ms. Bailey outlines when it is time to do this and how to do it quickly. She also outlines which methods are actually cruel and should be avoided.
This book isn't really for those who want to learn about individual fish or plants. But, don't let that deter you from purchasing this book. It would be a valuable companion to any fish hobbyist's library!

Any admirer of the creative talent of Frank Lloyd Wright should not be without this excellent book, which records 50 of his domestic interiors. Diane Maddex, who has written several books on Wright, has assembled a photographic collection of his living and dining rooms as well as playrooms, libraries, and a few public spaces, including Wisconsin's Johnson Wax building and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Wright's signature style--a combination of arts and crafts and the "prairie school"--was achieved by designing human-scale spaces with beautifully crafted materials. Maddex includes the finest examples of this in the book. The rooms span Wright's entire career--from the Robie House in 1906 to the Guggenheim, which was completed in 1959 (after the architect's death)--and they demonstrate the evolution of his style. The photographs are sensational; they capture the light, scale, and color of each interior. Accompanying each photo is a brief description of the clients, their requirements, and what Wright created for them. This is a lovely book that serves as a beautiful historical record of one of the 20th century's greatest architects.
Customer Reviews:
Good use of the full size of the book for big photos.......2007-03-28
A very natural companion book to 50 Favorite Houses by FLW by the same author. I think I prefer this one. It's not often I see photos of the interior of the Marin County Civic Center though there's just one. Despite there being 22 different photographers or souces for photos, they're all credited for 1998, the year the book was printed. This could explain why almost every interior shot appears to have, as much as possible, the same camera angle, that is, to include the ceiling and floors. It gives a feeling of first walking into a room. For some reason I like this book a little better than the 50 Favorite Houses one. Not sure why, maybe it's the rich natural wood colors of his interiors while all the homes in the other book are not as dramatic in color and bright detail as these rooms are. Both are worth having if you can get them at less than full price, which, thankfully, is one of the great strengths of this site. The author does a nice job with her medium sized column of information that is on the facing page of each entry. I'm always a happy FLW big color photo book owner when the book has every single photo (except one of FLW) take up the entire page and maybe half of them also covering a third of the facing page. That's what I want in such books, big color photos of his work taking up as much of the page as possible. Worth it owning this lovely book. chrisbct@hotmail.com
50 Favorite Rooms Review.......2003-08-29
This book is great either if you are wanting infornmation on Frank Lloyd Wright, his personal life or the works of art he created. It gives examples of his personal choices and styles. Each page includes a full page color picture of one of the rooms he designed.
It also is a good book if you are just looking for examples of interior design or aritechture. It has unique pieces and will give you great ideas!
Excellently arranged; quality overview of great room spaces.......2002-02-02
The first thing that struck me about this book is how well put-together it is. In "50 Favorite Rooms by Frank Lloyd Wright," Diane Maddex (listed in the credits as "Project Director") has crafted a book that is clean, simple and elegant in its presentation of the architect's trademark design of personal living spaces.
If you've visited more than a few of Frank Lloyd Wright's creations, chances are they won't all be represented here. He completed hundreds of homes and buildings, which means that this book could have been entitled "250 Favorite Rooms ..." and it still would have been too thin. What you do find are superb photos which are amazingly successful in capturing the perspective and harmony of lines, space, furniture, ornamentation and even lighting. My favorite views are inside the homes, but the public spaces are interesting also. You don't have to be an architect to appreciate the mastery in Mr. Wright's designs.
The chapters are grouped by room type (e.g., living rooms, dining rooms), with each of the pictures taking up AT LEAST one full page, and supported by 20-30 lines of text describing key design aspects of the room. The photos are of the highest quality in terms of exposure, lighting and balance. In some cases, the vantage point allows for a look beyond the windows to the surrounding landscape or greenery. A nice touch, indeed. In short, if you're looking for the definitive image of a room, you'll find a bunch of them right here.
If Mr. Wright had designed a book, I think this is what he'd have come up with. I give this my highest recommendation.
Seeing the Sublime from Behind Closed Doors.......2001-07-19
Most of the 5,000 plus wonderful rooms designed by Frank Lloyd Wright are not open to the public. This book gives you a chance to go where you often cannot go in any other way to see 50 of the best.
Unlike most architects, Mr. Wright designed in such a way that "the rooms inside would dictate the architecture outside." Even inside, he designed all elements of the room, including floor and wall coverings, art glass in many cases, lighting fixtures, furniture, and where everything should be located. He also specified that those who used the rooms should be limited to bringing in only certain types of objects, and for certain locations. For example, ornamental china was allowed on one ledge of the dining room in Robie House.
I have had the chance to visit many Wright homes and buildings, yet this book greatly expanded my understanding of his work.
Mr. Wright was primarily a home architect, and "the living room was the heart of the home" for him. He would use built-in benches to encourage reading, fireplaces for conversation, windows with designs to inspire contemplation, tables for informal dining and card playing, and views of nature for living more organically.
Clearly, it would be hard to outdo a Wright living room, and most of the best examples of his work in this book are living rooms. I thought the best ones were in the home and studio in Oak Park, Dana-Thomas House, Robie House, May House, Little House, Fallingwater, Taliesin West, Wingspread, Cedar Rock, R.L. Wright House, and Rayward House.
I liked his dining rooms best in the home and studio in Oak Park, Dana-Thomas House, Robie House, May House, and Boynton House.
For nooks and crannies, I liked the Oak Park studio library, and the Storer House Terrace.
Of the public spaces, my favorites were the Unity Temple Sanctuary, Coonley Playhouse, the Guggenheim Museum atrium, and the Marin County Center skylit atrium under the barrel vault.
If you ever have a chance to see any of these, be sure you take advantage of it! Robie House is now being rebuilt in Hyde Park, Illinois, but is open for tours. Final restoration is expected to be done in 2007. The Oak Park home and studio are open every day. Taliesin West is open most days. Fallingwater has an extensive schedule of being open. Unity Temple, the Guggenheim, and Marin County Center are usually open.
After you examine these wonderful living spaces, think about how your life would be improved in such more natural surroundings. How can you make where you live closer to his ideal?
Look for the most natural way to be with others!
The Essence of Eternal Art and Architectural Mastery!.......2000-02-01
This book touches me in many ways. First, it brings memories of childhood, with the illusions of art full in my mind. I have always loved art and buildings and when in Sr. High School, I had the opportunity to visit one of Mr. Wright's creations, I was in awe at the sight of it. It was in Falling Water, PA. When you have the opportunity to walk into one of these homes, not houses; it is like you feel the presence of the man who designed it, not just a building. Looking at the pages in this book is as close to walking in one of the luxurious rooms as a person can get without actually physically being there. Frank Lloyd Wright truly is an Eternal Artist. His book is lively and full of feeling, as well as detailed artwork that comes from the love of designing itself. I could go on for a long time about his works, but I will leave a little to the imagination now. If you haven't already seen or looked at one of his creations, I suggest that you at least buy one of the many wonderful books about them. You will be delightfully pleased for years to come.

Dining with Frank Lloyd Wright.......2001-03-30
"Frank Lloyd Wright's Dining Rooms," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of "mini-books," each of which spotlights a particular facet of Wright's amazing career. This volume contains many excellent full color photographs of dining rooms and furniture designed by the master architect. Other useful features in the book are Lind's interesting text, a series of sidebar quotes from Wright and others, and a bibliography.
Lind describes how Wright's dining rooms, over the course of his career, mirrored societal changes. Houses pictured in the book include the Rosenbaum house, Taliesin West, Fallingwater, and others. Each photo demonstrates Wright's mastery of color, space, form, and light. If you are interested in the work of Wright or in home design in general, you might really enjoy this book.
For Frank Lloyd Wright fans, this book is a must........1999-01-13
My wife and I are big fans of Arts and Crafts decor and are currently planning to build a timber frame home in which the designs seen in this book will definitely be an influence on our design. The interiors in the book are warm and inviting and are definitely not run of the mill. For Frank Lloyd Wright fans, this should be a part of your collection.

This book was scary. It was about a old lady that use to work there. She comes and appear to kids that misspell words all the time. There should be more books like this.
A Haunting Lesson.......1999-12-13
The Ghost in Room 11 takes a look at how scary it is to be the new kid in class, which, the story reveals, is not as scary as meeting a ghost. Matt (the new kid) soon learns the value of honesty in new friendships. He also learns the importance of doing your best in school because old teachers don't go away, but they might come back to haunt you. This is a fun book for boys and girls of all ages. Comments: Hannah, grade 2 - "It was pretty scary when the ghost touched Matt's chin, but I really liked the book."

How 'bout 4 and a half stars?.......2007-03-25
What do you want in a Frank Lloyd Wright book? If you want size, it's here, 12", if you want color photos, that's what it's got, if you want full page photos there's about 10 out of 120 or so. If you don't want a bunch of text, well, there is some and it's helpful, noting things such as, "...55,000 bricks were used to contruct the sing-story Donald Schaberg house...". Most of the photos are of, well, rooms of FLW homes. A handful are of the exterior of the home being detailed. There are also a few photos of a tapestry, two vases, a lamp and several of Wright glass. Again, Spencer Hart and, in this case, photographers Balthazar Korab and Christian Korab have done a very nice job of presenting a visually substantial book for a moderate price. At 155 pages it isn't skimpy though I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. Printed in 1998 it is a worthy addition to any FLW collection that aspires to feature large color photos of the man's beautiful work, in this case, the rooms and most of the contents designed by Wright as well. chrisbct@hotmail.com

Humor, emotional depth, AND social history!.......2003-05-19
Paki Wright has an extraordinary story to tell, and chooses an equally extraordinary way of telling it--as a post-suicidal teenager reviewing her life on a jerky eight-millimeter film screened in a celestial copy of Sigmund Freud's office.
Her caregivers, disciples of Dr. Wilhelm Reich, neglect her in the name of self-regulation and abuse her in the name of sexual non-repression. I am not going to give away the plot, but will reveal that the end is uplifting, and that there is laughter along the way. I appreciate the insider's view of Reich and his followers, and of the avant-garde life in New York City in the 1940's and 50's. A fascinating, gut-wrenching, fast-moving read!
Making sense of a "self-regulated" upbringing.......2002-09-22
In the 1930s, 40s, and 50s the Summerhill School of A.S. Neill and the writings of psychoanalyst/natural scientist Wilhelm Reich led a great many Americans to try raising their children in a more "self-regulating" manner. Wright was one of those children, and her tale is profoundly moving from beginning to end, as a celebration of what was good in ideas about self-regulation as well as a cautionary tale of how those ideas were abused. For, indeed, many adults, well-intentioned but not sufficiently aware of their own problems and need to control their children, used such ideas as yet one more tool to unconsciously impose their own will upon kids. (Similarly, many of the "Summerhill schools" that started up in the US in the 1960s only to fizzle out or worse, seem to have done as much harm as good for some of the kids who went to them.)
This has left the impression with a lot of today's generation of parents that such "free school" or "Free child" ideas are muddle-headed nonsense, one of the legacies of the crazy, irresponsible Sixties that is better off forgotten. Paki Wright's brave book, though dealing in a remarkably frank way with the mistakes made by the adults around her, does not seek any such simple formula for dismissing the truly important things she got from how she was raised. We watch her move through her adolescent phase of blaming the adult world, on into the maturity that recognizes their shortcomings as well as their sincere intentions and the truly valuable strengths they helped cultivate in her.
As a fascinating insider's view into one group of admirers of Reich, the book gives remarkable new insight into the struggle between Reich's work and the United States government that set out to brutally crush it. With the government-sponsored Nazi-like burning of Reich's books in 1956, and the imprisonment and killing of Reich in 1957, the child Wright watches as many of the adults in her world go down in that shipwreck. And then, like Peter Reich in his BOOK OF DREAMS, she has to grow up and make sense of the terrible events she witnessed and was part of.
Don Christians, Radio Show Host, "Turning Pages" KWMR.......2002-07-09
"The All Souls Waiting room" is a book about the nineteen-fifties that has relevance for contemporary America: a gung-ho government and a suicidal adolescent. Written with wit and style, it's an eye-and-heart opener.
All Souls Gets All Five Stars.......2002-04-30
Through an attempted suicide, Ms. Wright recounts with extraordinary insight into her growth from infancy to childhood to womanhood. She captures with whimsy, wit and humor the early fifties in Greenwich Village, where Wilhelm Reich and Sigmund Freud were competing giants among the introspective intelligentsia. The best read I've had in a long time.
