Book Description
The Pawprints of History shines a new light on a favorite subject -- the relationship between humans and their four-legged best friends. Stanley Coren, a renowned expert on dog-human interactions, has combed the annals of history and found captivating stories of how dogs have lent a helping paw and influenced the actions, decisions, and fates of well-known figures from every era and throughout the world.
As history's great figures strut across the stage, Coren guides us from the wings, adoringly picking out the canine cameos and giving every dog of distinction its day. In this unparalleled chronicle, we see how Florence Nightingale's chance encounter with a wounded dog changed her life by leading her to the vocation of nursing. We learn why Dr. Freud's Chow Chow attended all of his therapy sessions and how the life of the Fifth Dalai Lama was saved by a dog who shared his bed. Dogs have even found their way to the battlefield -- great military leaders such as Robert the Bruce and Omar Bradley have shared their lives, exploits, and gunfire with dogs. From Wagner, who admitted that one of the arias in the opera Siegfried was "written" by one of his dogs, to the dogs that inspired and lived with Presidents Lincoln, Roosevelt, Johnson, and Clinton, these loving canines do double duty as loyal pets and creative muses.
From war to art, across the spectrum of human endeavor and achievement, there often stands, not only at his side but leading the way, man's beloved "best friend." For those who believe that behind every great person is a good dog, the uplifting stories in The Pawprints of History will be a lasting delight.

Dog Lovers Unite!.......2006-10-08
This book is more a bon bon than anything substantial. But if you like dogs, you'll find this book a hoot. The premise is simple: dogs have had an impact on history.
The book commences with a chapter on dogs as sentinels. Thereafter, we read stories of the role of dogs in the lives of people as varied as Saint Patrick, Sigmund Freud, Richard Wagner, Charles I, Alexander Graham Bell, George Washington, Sir Walter Scott, Frederick the Great, Christopher Columbus, George Armstrong Custer, and so on.
In the last chapter, the author asks the question (page 291): "If dogs have had such an influence on human culture and history, it is quite reasonable to ask, why is it that we don't see canine contributions cited in standard political, social, and cultural histories?" The author provides no definitive answer, but his book is a lot of fun to read. Dog lovers will enjoy seeing "The Pawprints of History." One caution: There are a number of very bad factual errors in the chapter on General George Custer; this at least raises in my mind the accuracy of historical accounts elsewhere. But this is still an enchanting book.
Pawprints of History.......2006-07-26
This is an excellent and well-researched book describing how humans and dogs have interacted through history. It includes a wealth of interesting information about both individual and societal attitudes towards dogs and how those attitudes impacted events. Although the book is about the role of dogs in history, the stories humanize historical events by showing how compassion towards or fear of dogs affected individual people and societies. Great book.
The book is amazing.......2005-10-14
Dogs are my passion, in this wonderfully written book I've found that I am in GREAT company. It was well written, some of the stories could have been shorter. But it made me laugh and cry, and after almost every chapter I was amazed at what I didn't know about the people in the chapter. The research was extensive for this book. So if you love dogs and you love history you will really love this book.
A charming view of some wonderful friendships.......2004-02-12
This interesting book discusses the relationships between several noteable people and their dogs. At least one cynical Washington D.C. politician said that "if you want someone to love you in this town, buy a dog," and you will find he was not the first one to conjure up that thought. The author shows how people such as Florence Nightingale, Frederick the Great, Robert Burns, and Sigmund Freud were all warmly touched by the positive side of their dogs. These people, who somehow seemed so intensely boring in History class, never seemed so human as when interacting with their dogs. Dogs have served as companions for many others who needed a consistent friend, and they often served as inspirations for those who enriched our artistic and aesthetic lives (perhaps because they were so cheerful and so honest). Oh, by the way, the author gives us some pretty interesting lessons in history and the arts, too, so this story is not just about the canids. If you are looking for a good book to curl up with, and read to, your animal companions, give this one a try.
Eh........2003-07-10
Entertaining anecdotes, but not really what it promises. It's more a collection of famous people and their beloved dogs with a few notes (some of them are real stretches) about how the author believes the dogs might have affected them. Not particularly convincing, but sweet.

Customer Reviews:
Caveat Emptor.......2005-11-21
This purports to be a handy field guide that on can take to autcions, flea markets, and the like for indentification purposes.
Descriptions read like those that usually accompany reputable auction house photographs, published in pre-auciton catalogues that ordinarily cost 3 times the suggested price of this book. In this case, however, far too many decriptions have no accompanying photograph.
Unfortunately, the prices given are somewhat (to be kind) out of date. Further more, many of the item classes are specialties in themselves, and provenance (meaning proof of origin in writing) is more reliable than informaiton that can be crammed into a "field book" of this sort. Descriptions of items with no photos of an example are really useless to the novice and meaningless to the cognoscenti.
One of the positive aspects of the book are the occasional diversions regarding what kinds of items are difficult to fake (e.g., flags) but there is no dicussion of how to evaluate any purported Confederate item (whether used after pickup on the battlefield, manufactured in the South, or imported. Such issues are critical to anyone willing to put hundreds of dollars into any Civil War item.
The Glossary is also good, but too short--the Index a positive, but also brief. If you are going to go into collecting, you're going to need much more than this type of "field guide."
An investment of a few hundred dollars in specialized books (e.g. Civil War Rifles, Dance & Brothers Revolvers, Civil War Swords come to mind), will save one hundreds of dollars in errant purchases. "Caveat Emptor"--let the buyer beware!!

Useful Reference.......2007-07-14
Although the prices are somewhat out of date this book is still a very useful reference for the collector of American military collectibles. It is not a reference for the collector of Nazi militaria as the other two reviewers seem to suggest.
Poorly written referrence book........2002-09-19
Save your money, or you'll be sorry. This is simply a marketing tool for the authors ego, and not for the serious collector of Third Reich collectables. Smart collectors will look past this book and move on to true experts in the field.
Out of date prices and information.......2002-01-28
This book is seriously out of date, and is a waste of time and money for the collector. Ron Manion is apparently an expert on Nazi items, that what his auction mostly sells, but that's about it. This book will get the serious collector in a lot of trouble by using it as a reference.

Book Description
As an increasingly popular line of collectible jewelry, creations distributed by Sarah Coventry, Inc. have made their mark. From the 1950s through the 1980s, women purchased the jewelry exclusively at home jewelry parties. The success of the jewelry made Sarah Coventry, Inc. one of the largest distributors of costume jewelry. Although the parties are a thing of the past, Sarah Coventry jewelry has not been forgotten. Now, these durable and fashionable pieces are sought after by collectors who have rediscovered their timeless appeal. In Sarah Coventry Jewelry, authors Monica Lynn Clements and Patricia Rosser Clements have compiled nearly 400 photographs that display the unique designs along with their current market values. Sets, limited edition pieces, earrings, bracelets, rings, pendants, and brooches are shown. The photographs depict jewelry made of gold metal, rhodium, and plastic as well as jewelry adorned with colorful plastic "stones," rhinestones, and gemstones. This reference guide is a must for collectors of Sarah Coventry jewelry.
Customer Reviews:
Sarah Coventry Jewelry: An Unauthorized Guide for Collectors.......2007-07-23
Without repeating myself, I would just like to say that I agree with everything that the above person said about the book. I was disappointed to find a "collection" of pictures with several repeats and no names even attached to the items. I could have put together a book like this with my own Sarah Coventry jewelry!!
Don't Waste Your Money.......2005-12-09
As stated in my review of the author's "Avon Jewelry" book, these authors did not do their research and only described the items as gold, metal, rhodium, silver, pearl, etc. They did not give the in-depth information that collectors are looking to acquire.
I'll give a few examples:
(1) on page 86; the authors described the set of earrings as "Rhodium clip-on earrings" when Sarah Coventry named the line as "Fan Fare;"
(2) on page 107, the authors describe the item as "Rhodium pin" even though Sarah Coventry named the pin as their "Silvery Mist" line; and
(3) on page 32, the authors describe the item as "Gold metal necklace and bracelet" when Sarah Coventry named the line as "Chantilly Lace."
So, how much research did I do as compared with these authors?
When a person writes a book, people expect thorough research, not just pretty pictures. Yes, the book does have pretty pictures, but I've got the jewelry and wanted the information, not just pictures.
I wanted a Sarah Coventry Jewelry book to help me identify and describe the collectible Sarah Coventry Jewelry that I have found at various estate sales, and thought this book could help. I was definitely mistaken. Did the authors do any research? I think not. Will I ever be so stupid as to purchase another one of their books? No way! I would resale this book, but I don't want another person to be as disappointed as I was when I purchased this book on-line; not to mention that at the same time, I also purchased their waste of writing book entitled, "Avon Collectible Fashion Jewelry and Awards."
My suggestion to anyone wishing to write books on Avon or Sarah Coventry jewelry is to do your research. Both companies have catalogs with all of their items described, with the title the company gave the jewelry, dates of production and the original cost.
To these authors: "Please collect those catalogs before writing any more books of this type."

Bringing Tuscany Home: Sensuous Style From the Heart of Italy
ASIN: 1841728004 |
Book Description
The familiar image of the Italian countryside - hills crowned with groups of tall cypresses and rambling stone houses - dates back to early medieval times. But all the main features of that landscape are still there, particularly in the countryside of Tuscany, where many of the houses featured can be found. The first part of the book explores the essential ingredients of the style, taking in colour and texture and looking at the inimitable mixture of simplicity and comfort evident in furniture and fabrics, and going on to admire the innate gift the Italians have for living outside. The second part looks in more detail at the individual country houses. Whether Rustic, Contemporary, Exotic or Traditional in character, these homes offer myriad ideas for interior decoration that are easily incorporated into other lives and cultures.

Pretty Pictures Do Not A Book Make.......2003-01-24
A picture book for dreamers. Unfortunately, not much else of substance (e.g., how does the house work and why ?) Avoid this book especially if you have read Country Houses of Sweden. All in all, a poor effort.
Waste of money at any price.......2002-06-28
Extremely disappointed in the photos. Small pictures of doorknob, a foot of railing, a chair. Besides English also written in 2 other languages. Also contained recipes...I didn't order a cook book.
truly enjoyable.......2002-04-24
If you are in love with Italy and like to look through interior books, this one is truly a winner. You needn't even be in love with Italy to see that.
Barbara and René Stoeltie has made a piece of art taking us on a tour through country houses in Tuscany, from the old fashioned homes to the more modern, they all have the typical Tuscan touch which I love so much. You can almost feel the taste of olive oil, and the small of lavendel when you look through the pages.
The text is written in English, German and French, so there should be no problem reading the informative writing.
A perfect coffee table book for all Italian lovers.
beautifully photographed book.......2000-07-10
Looking for ideas to inspire building a Tuscan farmhouse, then this is it. It does lack in exterior shots, but the interior shots are wonderful. Whether you use this for inspiration or not, it will add to anyone's collection.
