Customer Reviews:
My first fave!.......2007-03-19
This is my favourite book about cockatiels, including with regard to illnesses and how to proceed in case of emergencies as not seen in other books that I owned about this subject.
truly essential.......2001-10-11
I've read a lot of cockatiel handbooks available today, but it seems like none of them discuss cockatiel behavior. I was interested in why my cockatiels do the funny things they do, yet all the information I could find was on breeding, buying, and feeding. "The Essential Cockatiel" has that plus a great section on the behavior of cockatiels, like mutual grooming, possessiveness, and etc. I recommend this book to anyone who is new to these charming birds or wants to know some interesting information about their cockatiels.

nice price.......2001-11-29
i 've owned this book together with the vol 2 for some years now ,and at this price it's a must-have for any collector. it is pretty general in it's aproach, but aren't many collections? can the experts write some more of them ?( there's a real demand for 'em ! )
Photos features primarily the lowest quality of lighters.......1998-06-30
This book appears to be a catalog of cigarette lighters that are widely available. It appears quality was not a consideration in the selection of these lighters (mostly japanese and low quality junk from the 50's-60's). These are, by and large not the items that have turned lighter collecting in to the popular hobby it is today. The saving grace of this book is the fact that it also includes about 70 pages of old catalog reprints showing some of the higher quality lighters available from the 20's-30's. It would have been nice to see some actual photographs of these lighters instead of the black and white and color drawings used in these vintage ads. However, these ads save the book, if not for these ads, the lighters photographed for this book would make it a good guide for what not to avoid in lighter collecting.

Book Description
Cigarette lighter collecting has quickly become a very popular hobby throughout the world. Here, at last, is accessible information for the collector. Over 500 lighters are illustrated in full color. They are shown in alphabetical order of their makers and by date within each company. The available historical data is presented clearly and concisely. The lighters are unusual and interesting. They include examples from well-known companies like Dunhill, Ronson, and Zippo as well as companies whose names are lost in smoke. The reader receives an "across the board" look at what is available today and what we think will be sought in the future. A guide to prices is included.

The best of the "general" lighter collecting books.......1998-08-24
This book is a great introduction to the lighter collecting hobby. It shows a lot of the nicer pieces not seen in the other general guides and prices are much more accurate as well. Besides a few minor errors in lighter descriptions this book is of the highest quality.

Customer Reviews:
Fitzpatrick is a genius, but.......2007-02-22
I enjoyed reading this book, it is full of good information about how to be creative as a rug design artist. If I had a criticism, it would be that Fitzpatrick keeps too many secrets to herself. She expects the reader to figure out a lot of the technique by looking at the photos. As a person who likes to have lots of information at hand, I was left needing more. But the book is full of beautiful photos of Fitzpatrick's designs. She is one of the more non-traditional rug hookers, and I truly enjoy her style. I just wish she was better at describing it. But don't let this keep you from buying the book. I recommend it in spite of this teeny criticism. You'll get many good hours of reading and design tips.
An Invitation to be creative.......2006-03-31
Deanne Fitzpatrick invites each reader to trust in their creative ability and use it in designing rugs. The book is an inspirational, as well as a practical, guide to planning and designing rugs.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, Great Book.......2006-08-11
Do not miss your chance to add this book to your library. This second book by Pat Cross is fabulous. Very well done, factual and complete, great photographs - just a great book and one I am proud to own.
Another Winner.......2006-08-10
Here's another winner from fiber artist Pat Cross. This is a thorough how-to on Pat's specialty, which are primitive rugs in a wonderful neutral palate. You will never see a better example than the gorgeous rug on the cover. There are lots of tips with great examples and photos. A great addition to any fiber artist's library.
Simply Primitive.......2006-08-09
Simply Primitive is another cogently written work by Pat Cross. The book will inspire and guide both the novice and the experienced artist of the primitive style. There are many original designs with patterns for you to create your own works of art. Pat tells you where she finds her inspiration and how she creates her designs. The book is beautifully illustrated with color pictures of the wools and the tools Pat uses, and encourages you to select what "works for you". I am a rug hooker and have selected 2 of her designs which will be winter projects for me ... Quilted Cats [the cover design from an antique quilt] and Cat Birds [this is done in 2 just colors ! with an amazingly effective border]. Pat shares several Punchneedle designs, but I am intrigued most by the Needlefelting and suspect I'll be working with roving this winter as well. With her clear and detailed instructions, you can even punchneedle and/or needlefelt parts or the whole of her hooked rug designs. And, if you have not bought Purely Primitive ... buy both of these books; you're in for a treat.
Don't buy this for Punchneedle - you'll be very disappointed.......2006-08-08
I bought this book because I love punchneedle -- and "punchneedle" is in the subtitle of this book, so I assumed there would be some good punchneedle patterns and projects here. However, there are only two very nondescript (and disappointing) punchneedle patterns in this book, and I was very disappointed. I think the publishers just wanted to add "punchneedle" and "needle felting" to the title of the book to boost sales - but there's not much content here for either punchneedle or needle felting. If you're into rug hooking, you'll enjoy this book more, but if you have her other book on rug hooking, then you won't need this one, too. There's nothing new here, except for the gorgegous cat rug on the front cover, which is stunning (and perhaps worth the price of the book). I'm going to do that pattern as punchneedle.

A new hooker's review.......2007-08-29
I just learned how to hook rugs in June and I've already completed 8 pieces. I'm HOOKED! I bought this book before my first lesson and have referred to it frequently. It's inspiring and informative. Pat has great designs and advice.
AWESOME BOOK-IT TOUCHES ON ALL ASPECTS OF RUG HOOKING!.......2004-04-12
This is a great book! I have several books on rug hooking & this is the one I keep going back to. It teaches everything you need to know about rug hooking. She has many new ideas, & her rugs are gorgeous! Also included are patterns on these great rugs. A MUST read for beginners & seasoned pros alike! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
With extensive technique descriptions.......2004-04-03
Purely Primitive: Hooked Rugs From Wool, Yarn, And Homespun Scraps by weaving expert Pat Cross is a full-color instructional guide with sample patterns to creating "primitive" style hooked rugs - marked by their simple design, crafted via techniques that have existed for centuries, composed of wool, cotton, or linen textiles, and which share echoes of the past to enrich the present. Extensive technique descriptions make following the sample patterns or creating one's own as simple as possible, in this most enjoyable and enthusiastically recommended addition to do-it-yourself home craft reference and needlecraft resource collections.
Spectacular!.......2004-01-25
Being new to rug hooking, I was in search of a book that covered everything, from start to finish. I purchased, and read 4 other books, but all seemed to be lacking the perfect detail Pat Cross includes in all of her sections. If you are new to hooking, let this be the first book you read! Most of the other books have only black and white pictures, but her book is done in color photos- a must, if you wish to see all the detail in hooked rugs. I would definately purchase any other books Pat Cross has on this subject!
Purely Primitive ... Everything you ever wanted to know!.......2004-01-06
Pat's book is a most comprehensive book on rug hooking in the primitive style...starting with a definition of primitive! Her style of writing is clear and clean...directions and ideas are abundant...patterns are included...and the color pictures just bring it all to life. Folks, get out your fabrics and hooks and start a great journey...you'll love it!

Customer Reviews:
This is your book if you want to hook animals........2007-04-14
I bought this book when trying to hook the face of a goat. I'm glad I did. Elizabeth Black leads the reader through the characteristics of animals and how to achieve a realistic look. Her simple drawings of animal features help the reader when he/she can't remember whether the iris of a goat's eye is vertical or horizontal, or whether a zebra nose is wider at the bottom than at the top. Her tips on using colors to achieve certain effects is helpful too. Now I just wish she'd do one on people.
hooking animals.......2006-11-07
Goregous pictures of beautiful work, and very inspirational. Techniques are shown well, but not enough dyeing information for the subtle shading colors that animals require, or so I felt when I read it. Good reference book though.
animal eyes are the secret!!.......2004-08-23
Elizabeth Black has long been known in hooking circles for her animals, but after two workshops with her, this book is the perfet review and inspiration for anyone who loves animals. The techniques are taught, demonstrated and reviewed along with some stunning examples - a must have on your hooking shelf.

African Celebrities.......2007-01-14
I was interested to hear that this book has been updated and reproduced. My grandfather Mr A.J. Ocansey, was one of the sponsors of the original book. I first saw a copy of the original book which belonged to the daughter of Dr Bruce who I believe was also one of the sponsors!I am very happy to get a copy of this book.It contains the sort of information which has been lost and of which the modern generation of West Africans are unaware.
It has a lot of information for people researching their family history.
