As a recent Interior Design graduate I was looking for books to remodel the interiors of homes in a "green", sustainable way. I ordered this book but upon inspection found it to be more suited for an owner/builder. I ordered "Good Green Homes", by Jennifer Roberts as well and found it to be similar in that it would appeal more to owner/builders/architects.

A good reference book for any contractor new to green building.

Explains the basics of indoor air pollution and how to choose different building materials that are both "green" and healthy. Broken down into different sections, i.e., the kitchen and bathroom for example makes it an easy to follow guide. The check-lists at the end of each chapter offer an easy way to make sure you've considered everything with the project.

decent but commercial and expensive.......2007-06-01

this book was well written and fairly clear, even to me as a building novice. i was fairly disappointed, though, at how many of the green approaches seemed to focus on expensive, high-tech commercial green materials. i was hoping for a lot more on how to integrate traditional and very basic do-it-yourself techniques such as recycling used materials, mud plastering, simple greywater systems, and so on into existing buildings. in the end, i could hardly use any of the information in this book because i couldn't afford the materials. if you have the money, though, and are hoping for a very polished and professional look, you will probably enjoy this book.

Good book but could be condensed .......2007-03-09

I read the book from start to finish but found myself skipping over many passages of repeated information. Although the information provided was useful, the same exact info. is rehashed many times in the same chapter and throughout the book. The book format may have something to do with that with it's many recaps and review.

Great way to think about green remodelling.......2007-01-21

This book really shaped how I went about renovating my house. Although I wasn't able to incorporate as much as I had hope, due to budget constraints, this book opened my eyes to considerations I didn't know existed. It's easy to look at solar or wind power, bamboo flooring and recycled tiles to go green; this book goes through a house piecemeal to explain concerns on every level for a much more thorough discussion of renovating green. Extremely helpful.

It's Not a Drag!.......2000-09-29

Laurence Senelick's The Changing Room is an entertaining and well-written exploration of the "inherent sexuality of all performance, the ability of the live theatre to construct gender variants unencountered anywhere else, and an abiding 'queerness' in the most authentic types of theatre...."

Scholars will mine the rich lode of material found in the text and the footnotes. Less exacting readers, including this reviewer, will find the book a curious admixture of fascinating, funny, and illuminating. I am still smiling at Senelick's description of the untimely passage of Bert Savoy, an entertainer with whom i was not familiar: "Rumour ran that he had exclaimed 'Mercy, ain't Miss God cutting up something awful!' just before he was struck by lightning.

The book is illustrated by numerous photographs which are equally interesting.

The Changing Room's greatest accomplishment is to synthesize many centuries of material in a manner which places our contemporary experience in perspective. I ordered the book to read about an entertainer who particularly intrigues me. I ended up spending the weekend reading the whole book. It is without any reservation that I heartily recommend The Changing Room to all readers.

Cool topic, but as enjoyable as reading a phone book.......2000-08-25

Drag performances tend to be funny and light. Of course, studying gender and studying gender in relation to theatre warrants a "heavier" reading of such performances..... But STILL, this book is as fat as a binder and is as dense as a computer manual.... Nothing you could read from cover to cover -- and I think that this would have been a lot more fun.

I got hooked on the BBC TV series "Changing Rooms" when it began showing on BBCA.

This is a great book in that it takes the reader one step further than the show - it actually shows Handy Andy at work instead of in the background.

He shows how to do various projects such as wallpapering, putting up shelves and even unblocking drains (which I needed last weekend), with step-by-step illustrations. He also advises on the various tools you should own (or use) with instructions on using them, some pitfalls you might encounter on your DIY and even some dangers with DIY by showing what can happen if you do it wrong.

In all, I recommend this book to the American reader. Long live Handy Andy

I absolutetly adore the show "Changing Rooms" (and "Ground Force" as well), it's so much better than "trading Spaces", the American remake because they are a lot more daring and know how to bring their creativeness to the rooms (plus it does'nt drag on for an entire hour, only thirty minutes). If you have BBC America, watch Changing Rooms, and if you want to revive a dead look in your house buy this book! ...

HOORAY FOR THE NON-BLAND ENGLISH DESIGNERS!.......2002-01-25

I got hooked on Changing Rooms from the beginning when Direct TV first put BBCA on our system.

I believe this British (the original) show is so much better than the American version of the show, Trading Spaces. I believe it is because the designers are so much daring in their creations and are not as bland (and I really mean bland) as the American counterpart.

But being an American, I don't know if I could do a complete make over from Changing Rooms, but the ideas that Linda Barker gives are so inspirational so hopefully it will me to break out of my own "bland" mold. I could maybe let Laurence redo a room and not cry when I see it.

This book will inspire you beyond belief into transforming dull rooms into beautiful ones. This book is really great -- it goes through various rooms the Changing Rooms TV show has made over during the past few years, giving you step-by-step info for how to do what they've done. The designers on Changing Rooms are very creative and innovative and what I like is that the makeovers are completely do-able, even for novices. This book is worth it for the inspiration alone!

Changing Rooms did for me what Linda Barker's book about designers secrets didn't do. There's plenty of pictures, before & after and lots of tips about the projects. Glossary of terms is rather helpful. Especially nice are the mini-stories about the people involved and their goals for the rooms. After this book arrived I read it cover to cover. It doesn't live on the bookshelf. You can find it either on the coffee table, my desk or my bedside table. Yaaaaayy!! Linda and all your cohorts!

The best ever, must-have book for DIY decorating.......2001-09-10

I've been an obsessive fan of BBC's Changing Rooms series for several years now, so I went totally nuts when I heard there was a Changing Rooms book available! And what a book it is!! Basically, it gives indepth instructions for many of the techniques and processes seen on the show, but in greater detail than you get on TV. I was especially excited to learn about the antiquing wax Linda Barker used to age a fireplace, and I was totally inspired by her use of black-and-white copies to create your own wall border. If you like Changing Rooms (or even the whiny American knockoff, Trading Spaces), this book is a must-have. It's also great if you're looking for inexpensive do-it-yourself projects that pack a lot of punch in a short amount of time. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because a few of the rooms just don't meet with my taste.
