Customer Reviews:
Taking Up Riding as an Adult (Horse-Wise Guides Series).......2007-01-10
Very good reference. Follows right along with my riding lessons. Written with a nice touch of humor.
Misleading at best.......2004-04-24
After buying this book, you then discover that there is a WHOLE other series of books they want you to buy afterwards. This book barely covers the areas I thought it would. Almost the entire book preaches on where to learn, and where to buy, and board a horse. But doesnt barely, or not even, covers the step by step essentials of how to groom, apply tack, or even how to ride a horse. They want you to buy the other books to learn that information. Save your money.
Great Introduction to Riding.......2003-07-24
I'm 43, and I bought this book after I'd been riding for a year, because I wanted to go over the basics again and make sure that I was doing things right! (I was pleased to find out that I am, thanks to a great instructor/school horse/farm.) I especially like the way the author stresses safety while also noting that, while accidents will happen, it's very unlikely that you'll be seriously injured--IF you ride safely.
Another thing I like is that she plays up the social/fun aspects of riding. While I'm sure there are "horsey snobs," I've not yet met any here in Knoxville, and have found other riders to be friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic. If you love horses & riding, you're "in the club"; there's no need to be bashful about being a beginning adult rider!
This is a great little book, and I recommend it to any adult who's new to riding or thinking about learning how to ride.
Excellent and helpful.......1998-10-26
This book is well worth the price. It provides and excellent overview to the entire equestrian sport. Illustrations are clear; photographs, while not in color, are helpful (not just decorations); the copy is concise. The author has excellent knowledge of the sport and command of the english language. This book is great for any adult looking to take up the sport or parent seeking to better understand his/her child's passion.

Book Description
Shirley Temple remains the best-known child Hollywood movie star of all time and the Shirley Temple Doll (still being manufactured today) continues to be the champion of the doll industry. Since 1934, when the doll was first created, variations of the Shirley doll and associated collectibles have been avidly collected along with hundreds of costumes inspired by Shirley's roles in 57 films between 1931 and 1949. In this book, 350 beautiful color photographs present a nostalgic gallery along with original doll advertising and publicity shots from the movies. The author displays, organizes, and explains all the dolls and known costumes up to the present, and many collectibles related to them. His chronology of Shirley Temple's motion pictures, including the title, studio, date, running time, director and cast of each, is an important reference. Three generations of movie buffs, doll collectors, and vintage fashion enthusiasts alike, who have made the Shirley Temple Doll an American classic, will need to own this newly revised and expanded edition.

Shirley Temple Dolls and Fashions.......2007-01-11
This is a must have for anyone collecting dolls. I use it all of the time and have learned so much.
Great reference for the Shirley Temple "doll" collector........1999-07-31
This book contains excellent photos and realistic prices for Shirley Temple dolls from the early composition dolls to the 1972 vinyl dolls. Also included are photos and prices for doll outfits, paperdolls, books, the sapphire blue breakfast set, and salts. If a collector wants photos and prices for other types of Shirley Temple items then I would suggest one of Patricia R. Smith's "Shirley Temple Dolls and Collectibles" books.

I Can't Put It Down....It Is THAT GOOD!!!.......2007-06-03
I just purchased this wonderful book. I really cannot put it down. The pictures are crisp and clear. The descriptions are perfect and the commentary is priceless. This is one book every doll collector needs to own. This took a lot of work to do, and it is well worth the money. Great job Carmen Varricchio!!
A Fabulous Guide For Seldom Seen Items!.......2007-05-22
This book blew me away! I've been collecting dolls all my life practically and I knew of several clone style outfits but this book has so many items that I hadn't seen before. And it gave me so much needed information on Tuesday Taylor, Tiffany Taylor, Dawn Doll Clone Outfits and a ton more. I love a book that covers the obscure and this books does a great job with a wealth of information. It shows doll lines that no one else has covered at all! I refer to this book all the time because of my line of work. So it's a definate keeper in my collection! And the one thing that really stands out in my opinion, is the quality of the pictures. They are bright and clear. You're not left guessing what the colors or hues are really like in person. So I'm very impressed! (And I'm a picky person) And it's a fun read too! I would really love to see a volume 2 on this book!! I'd be the first in line to buy it! THIS IS A MUST HAVE!!
A Great Book - Covers Many Forgotten and Rarer Dolls of the 70's.......2007-02-18
I just love this book! The pictures are wonderful, clear and colorful, but it's the descriptions that make it oh so fun. The descriptions are very straightforward and concise, and many are funny enough to make me chuckle to myself. You just know exactly what Carmen means. I remember the 70's.
This book is a great addition to any fashion doll collectors reference as it covers many of the other dolls that were around during the Mod/Best Buy era of Barbie. Lot's of new and interesting information.
Interesting, Informative, a wealth of Information .......2007-01-18
I have enjoyed this book over and over again. It is an excellent resource, clear pictures and a wide range of information on Doll Fashions. Well worth purchsaing. The author is knowledgeable and goes beyond the typical barbie fashions to sharing about a wide range of doll fashions from the 1970's. Can't wait for Volume 2!
Mr. Blackwell of the 1970's Fashion Doll Clothing World!.......2007-01-11
Being a rabid collector of vintage 1960's Barbie & friends dolls & clothing, I have a pretty good reference library on vintage fashion doll clothing. When I saw this book, I dared venture out of my favorite era, the 1960's, which saw Mattel produce fashion ensembles of uncontested superior quality, to check out what was going on in Dolly Fashion Land in the 1970's. The author has a vast collection of mint in package fashion doll clothing at his disposal, a wry sense of humor and a wonderful photographer. I am really enjoying paging through this book and checking out the photos of these fashions in full color. The authors' text is refreshing in his brutally honest, yet at the same time, loving, assessment of the el cheapo fashion doll clothing produced by the minor and/or forgettable fashion doll clothing manufacturers of this period. He is truly the Mr. Blackwell of the 1970's Fashion Doll Clothing World. I laughed myself silly and had to agree with his assessment on page 6, for example, of some Dawn doll-size clothing ensembles as "wonderfully inferior and even a little distasteful". Dont get me wrong, it's not all crooked hems, outsized ponchos and polyester pants that are being featured here: Mr. Varricchio also includes an extensive chapter (about half the book) on Mattel made fashions for Barbie, Ken and Skipper. These close up photos are refreshing in the details that I find are sometimes missing in doll reference books of this type. I am anxiously waiting for the author to produce a follow-up book. Where does he find this great vintage stuff? I want to see more!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2002-09-24
This is a wonderful book about the fabulous dolls and accessories of the 1950s. It has lots of photos and complete descriptions and something for everyone. It is comprehensive and a "must" for collectors of this era- perfect for research or simply enjoyment and a trip down memory lane. Well done! Keep the books coming!
Excellent Resource Guide.......2001-01-25
I bought this book to match the clothes that I buy at garage sales and auctions to the dolls that I own and to make sure that any dolls I'm considering are dressed in their original clothes, and I was not dissapointed. With over 500 color pictures and pictures of whole catalogue pages I have found this book to be the best in my library.Value guides are given in the description paragraph not forcing the reader to turn to a back page and search for a corresponding plate number, which I personally find annoying.I would highly recommend this book to any collector of 50' dolls.

Great Book!.......2005-06-16
If you own a lathe, you need this book. I've read maybe 50 lathe books and this is one of the top few. This guy knows his way around all types of lathes and their accessories, which is a rare talent. He discusses jeweler's, wood, and metal lathe workholding, of all sizes. The book is very versatile, opening up possibilies you probably haven't thought of.

OK for the inexperienced........2007-01-10
For anyone new to shop work this book will be of value. If you have already been making things to get a job done (i.e. jigs, fixtures, hold downs, third hands, etc.) you are way beyond this book. The number and kinds of fixtures and jigs presented here is very limited. Among the things missing is a basic fixture for cutting tapers on a table saw.
Jig & Fixture Books.......2001-09-08
I have many books on making jigs and fixtures for shop tools. Without a doubt this is the best one I have come accross. I have made and used the fixtures in this book. They are GREAT.
Not only that the book only cost $... US .... What a bargin. I have paid twice the price at other places for what I thought were good practical projects and this book beats them all. Get your hands on a copy and you won't be sorry.

A reference.......2004-07-10
This is damn good book! Whatever you`re an experienced woodworker, amateur, or just started learning on the table saw, the tricks, techniques, consels, examples and pictures got me more confortable using the bench saw. And a bonus, the jigs presented in the book made me save a lot of time ... and money !
Use Your Table Saw Safely.......2000-03-31
I found this text to be extremely helpful. Often one feels comfortable using a tool because of experience and lack of difficulty with the basics. This book opened my eyes with respect to basic setup to optimize safety, efficiency as well as introducing me to many uses I hadn't previously understood. There are some great plans for various jigs that make working with the saw alot easier; I described one to my brother, a professional woodworker, who hadn't previously seen this jig and figured it might have saved his fingertips. The text and illustrations are easy to understand. I think nearly everyone might learn a significant new approach from this book.

Book Description
Thomas Jeckyll (1827-1881) ranks among the least understood and most tragic Aesthetic Movement figures in England. This abundantly illustrated book explores his innovative and brilliant designs in architecture, furniture, metalwork, and interiors and restores him to his deserved place among the architect/designers of his time. The book is the definitive study of Jeckyll's life and work, and it presents his notable buildings and diverse examples of his decorative arts. Susan Weber Soros and Catherine Arbuthnott examine Jeckyll's most important architectural commissions, among them the extravagant five-story Cambridge town house, Rance's Folly. They also discuss the interiors he designed-some of the most innovative and evocative Aesthetic Movement rooms of his time-as well as the remarkable furniture and metalwork designs for which he is best-known today, including the "Four Seasons Gates" that were exhibited in Paris and Vienna.
