This is a valuable tool for raising a pup. It is concise and written in laymen's terms so it's very easy to understand. It's straight forward and to the point. You don't have to weed through a ton of useless information. I'd highly recommend this book for anyone wanting great meaningful tips and techniques on puppy raising. It's made a world of difference for me.
Great Book.......2006-01-29
As a first time puppy owner I was at a loss in every area, I reviewed many books and chose this one with my fingers crossed, I was not wrong and I go to this book everytime I have a question that needs an answer. I am thrilled with the all the puppy has learned and much has been in the book. I recommend the book for all new puppy parents.
A good starting tool.......2005-10-13
The book for dummies helped with getting started with my new puppy. She is a hyper dog so I was still lost with what to do when she did not react the way she was supposed to according to the book.
THis is a great book.......2005-04-03
I loved this book.It helped a lot.It talked about all
different kinds of things.Like what to do if your dog
or puppy barks at everything. How to clean a puppy's ears
and why.How to stop them from biting. How to recognize
your pup's personality.Ssomething I learned is that
there are different ways a pup can act like. Some

Vivid descriptions of daily WWI experiences.......1999-04-09
Mr. Finan was able to take an interesting approach to the diary entries of Flash Ranger Pfennig during WWI. Although some of the entries are not very extensive, Mr. Finan fills in the voids with great descriptions of what was happening during that time period during the war. His descriptions of the ships as they crossed the sea had me dodging torpedos in my mind. The vivid decriptions of the coloring and geometric figures on the ships made me feel like I was actually riding across the Atlantic. This book will step you through the WWI experience and will touch on the small intimate experiences in the daily lives of a soldier.
The experience of war.......1999-03-22
It is a pleasure to see a micro-history book written by a first time author with such grace and precision. Finan has created a work which, unlike traditional battlefield accounts, reflects the nature of war for most participants--the extreme boredom, being disinfected for disease and pests, and the long process of being moved overseas and overland.
What I found amazing about this account is how Finan was able to pull so much information from such a small original document. The only way this can be accomplished successfully is through the skill and ability of the author. Congratulations are due to Finan, and it is hoped both that Crimson Shamrock press continues to print works such as this and that Finan continues to produce history that is so technically sound and utterly enjoyable.
I felt like I was going to war with Clair.......1999-03-11
This book gave me the true experience and insight of what a soldier went through in WWI. The annotations by Mr. Finan added the background and placement to set the diary into context. Very interesting reading!

Short pieces by women who "survived" atomic blasts.......2005-02-28
It is very good for all people to go back and read the accounts of the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Humans find it easy to forget just how destructive nuclear weapons are and what they do to people. This book is a collection of short pieces written by Japanese women who survived the blasts and they are very strong. While there is criticism of the United States, the writers are also very critical of the militaristic mindset that led to Japan adopting expansionist policies. There is mention of the forcible "recruitment" of the Korean comfort women who "staffed" the brothels for the soldiers.
While death by other weapons is horrific, there is something particularly unsettling about atomic weapons. The accounts of people, whose skin is melted off their bodies, an entire city leveled, and people instantly vaporized; leaving only a shadow on a wall cannot help but unnerve any sane person. Furthermore, it does not end there. Thousands of people survived the initial blast, only to die slower, more painful deaths from the radiation. Years after the blasts, thousands of people were still suffering from the events of the days of the blasts.
It should be a moral rule that the people who are in a position to order the use of nuclear weapons should read material describing what happens when they are used. This book is a powerful work of historical literature, a depiction of the greatest acts of instantaneous destruction that the world has ever seen. One can only hope that similar events will never occur again and that nuclear weapons will always serve one and only one purpose. Which is as a deterrent to war, preventing all sides from escalating a small conflict into one of simultaneous societal suicide.
Haunting and Lyrical .......2004-07-21
I read this book in a Women's History course. White Flash Black Rain contains searing, beautiful poems and articles by women who experienced the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII. Some of the women whose work is included did not live long after they wrote their pieces. Why, you can guess.
Book Description
Hundreds of anchors, exotic dancers, angry daggers, and patriotic decorations are shown that adorned the flesh of veterans returning from the world wars. This collection of historic flash boards is a tribute to those who served their countries; a sentimental look at body art available in the early 20th Century; and an exciting examination of bold designs that have stood the test of time. This book invites you to peruse an exhibition wartime art from the turn of the century through World War II; art that is enjoying increasing popularity on today's young crop of skin canvas. Perforated pages allow you to remove pages and hang them on the wall of your studio.

Outstanding presented work !.......2007-04-04
I just recieved this book from Amazon and could not put it down. Spider Webb has taken some of the most saught after flash pictures and compiled them into this one excellent volume on Military Flash. Of course this book is not for everyone, but for folks like myself who traveled through life looking back at the years I spent at Sea in the US Merchant Marines and walking through tattoo parlors from Corpus Christi,Texas to Baltimore City you can remember veiwing so much of this book hanging on the walls as flash in many different shops. I'm now 53 years old but of course I still sport the sea-going tattoos that I recieved some 35 years ago. I always loved the WWII Navy & Maritime tattoos that I grew up looking at on the arms of most of the guys that fought in the Big War while I was still a kid. This book even has some flash that goes back to the Spanish American War...pretty cool huhh.
If you love tattoo shots of Sailing Ships, Anchors, Mermaids, Daggers and of course the famous "Sailor's Graves" and "Rock of Ages" then this book is also for you. Yesterday while looking through this book my 8 year old granddaughter was sitting on my lap looking with me and she was enjoying these neat pictures as much as I was!Get a copy it's more then worth the price! "ENJOY" Joe Kopeck U.S.M.M.
Book Description
During a dark period of U.S. military history in the late 1960s, North Korean forces captured an American naval vessel and shot down an unarmed reconnaissance aircraft, taking the lives of thirty-one U.S. sailors and Marines and striking a damaging blow to American honor. This look back to that earlier time of crisis provides serious food for thought as contemporary strategists again grapple with a North Korean regime that threatens regional security and U.S. national interests.
The capture of USS Pueblo has been written about extensively but rarely in context with the shoot down fifteen months later of an EC-121 aircraft and never with so much relevant documentation. Richard Mobley, a veteran naval intelligence officer who served on the staff of U.S. forces in Korea during the late 1990s--confronting many of the same challenges faced in the 1960s and today--has uncovered a vast array of recently declassified documents that shed new light on these events and address lingering questions about U.S. reactions and its failure to retaliate. The formerly top secret answers to these and many other frequently asked questions are all covered in Mobley's groundbreaking investigation. His careful examination of the resource strains caused by concurrent U.S. involvement in Vietnam, the unexecuted retaliatory plans, and lessons learned confirms many criticisms long leveled at U.S. planners and decision-makers. It also challenges other criticisms by revealing new information and by placing these facts in the context of the time. The author couples the wisdom of hindsight with the revelation of new information for a timely new work on a subject of ongoing and vital importance.
Customer Reviews:
Still, Nobody Can Say Why They Did It.......2004-03-21
This book provides a detailed chronology of the United States' response to the North Korean capture of the USS Pueblo and its crew in January 1968 (1 KIA and 82 POW) and the downing of a USN EC-121 electronic reconnaissance aircraft (31 KIA) on April 1969, less than four months after the release of Pueblo's crew. It does not recount more than the bare outlines of the two incidents themselves. I served in a Navy unit in Japan that was the permanent station for two of men killed in the EC-121 shoot down and participated in post-shoot down deployments in that theater during 1969-70.
Commander Mobley traces the U.S. response from Washington and in the Western Pacific to each event. Both incidents follow the same pattern: 1) initial confusion and inability to respond to the attacks in real time, 2) a rush to deploy military assets into the region, 3) a period of air and naval saber rattling in apparent preparation for retaliatory strikes against North Korea and 4) eventual standing down for a negotiated release of the Pueblo crew and, well, nothing at all for the EC-121 shoot down. Both events take place against a backdrop of a major war in Vietnam, where South Korea (ROK) and North Korea (KORCOMs) were both involved,. In both cases the North Koreans took, and won, the calculated gamble that the U.S. would not risk opening a "second front" in Northeast Asia. Lame U.S. response to both incidents, especially from the then-new Nixon administration in 1969, illustrate how unprepared the U.S. was (and is?) to engage the North Koreans. Oddly, in that era the ROK's forces were numerically much stronger than the KORCOM's and their martial governments were seemingly anxious. to attack - they, after all, suffered more casualties than the U.S., plus the KORCOMs tried to kill the ROK president in 1967.
As Mobley describes, but, in my opinion, fails to put into full context, the period from about November 1966 through mid-1969 saw hundreds of actions between KORCOM and both ROK and U.S. forces along the DMZ and along the ocean boundary on both the Sea of Japan and Yellow Sea coasts. These several hundred firefights are, along with the Pueblo and EC-121 incidents, referred to by participants as the Second Korean War, a small scale war that claimed more than 1,000 ROK and U.S. casualties (the approximately 186 U.S. casualties - 75 KIA and 111 WIA from all services - are a significantly higher casualty RATE than U.S. forces suffered during Desert Storm) and a larger number of KORCOM deaths (most fought to the death rather than be captured). By treating the Navy incidents as almost totally separate from the U.S. land and ROK land/sea incidents (which were NOT much publicized at the time since the media usually can't handle more than one story at a time, and Vietnam was the big story) Mobley does not capture the feel of the era that participants in-theater experienced. Also, Mobley glosses over or fails to describe some post-EC-121 U.S. responses in the theater.
Mobley illustrates how the ROK land forces at the time significantly outnumbered estimated KORCOM forces, although the KORCOMs had a numerical advantage in tactical aircraft. The U.S. air forces were pathetically small - although more could be brought in - and U.S. Army units were under strength, and remained so, due to needs in Vietnam. The big question remains, "What was North Korea trying to do?" The best Mobley comes up with, and it's as good an answer as anyone else has ever publicly provided, is that it was all related to some internal policy struggle among North Korean elites (hawks v. super hawks?) that died down when the risks began to outweigh the perceived internal political and propaganda advantages. Or perhaps, as one U.S. official remarked following a seemingly pointless KORCOM outrage, "That's just what they do."
I recommend this book to anyone interested in Cold War, Korean peninsula and Northeast Asian military and political history. The author is a former U.S. Navy officer who served in Korea and Northeast Asia a number of years after the incidents described in this book. His primary sources, documented in footnotes and a bibliography, are from declassified DOD and State Department records, Congressional hearing records and oral histories of senior civilian and military officials. The maps are inadequate in either detail or content to follow the progress of deployments or identify the location of some events. Several black and white photographs add little information since they are of well know people (e.g., President Johnson and Defense Secretary McNamara) or widely published stock photos of military aircraft and vessels.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE.......2003-12-25
Richard Mobley has done an excellent job of placing the Pueblo capture and the subsequent shoot down of an EC-121 in it's proper historical perspective. Instead of focusing on each incident as other books have done, Mobley delves behind the scenes using newly available information to set up the then current situations and then shows what followed. A timely book considering the current climate in North Korea. I might have had second thoughts of flying the DMZ right before leaving the ROK back in '91 if I'd read this book first. Having been painted by NK radar the whole time now takes on a whole new meaning for me.

Book Description
This book presents, for the first time, a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of gun muzzle blast and flash. It describes the gas dynamics involved, modern propulsion systems, flow development, chemical kinetics, and reaction networks of flash suppression additives as well as historical work. In addition, the text presents data to support a revolutionary viewpoint of secondary flash ignition and suppression.
The book is written for practitioners and novices in the flash suppression field: engineers, scientists, researchers, ballisticians, propellant designers, and those involved in signature detection or suppression.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A576383. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Understanding lightning characteristics over land and water is vital to achieving optimal safety and success in Air Force missions. Lightning safety rules are often based on experience rather than a scientific understanding of lightning. Examining lightning characteristics over water and land will assist in a better understanding of lightning and provide answers that can protect human lives and property. Water and land have different compositions and surface conductivity values. A lightning stroke is detected through a change in the electro-magnetic field at the surface. The change in surface conductivity values from land to water can affect the detection of a lightning stroke and its associated parameters. The change in composition from water to land can also affect the dynamics of a storm and the lightning discharge process.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A427724. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Maastricht Treaty renamed the European Community the European Union (EU) and shaped the EU's three pillars. Pillar two, the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), promoted cooperation among member states in foreign policy affairs. It also introduced the need to develop a common European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP) that aimed at providing police and military capabilities to the CFSP. This idea represented a new element in the European integration process. ESDP was launched formally in June 1999, establishing ESDP's mission on the three Petersberg Tasks: (1) humanitarian and evacuation missions, (2) peacekeeping missions, and (3) combat missions for crisis management. The European Council agreed that the EU needed the capacity for autonomous action backed by credible military forces ready to respond to international crises without prejudice to actions by NATO. Thus, in Dec 1999, the European Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) was formed. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the development of the ESDP and to stress the need to consider Electronic Warfare (EW) as a militarily critical technology. The need for common operational concepts, doctrines, and training, especially in EW, becomes a necessity as Joint EU Armed Forces become ready to manage regional and international crises. However, a study of ESDP's current status shows that EW has been addressed but not properly emphasized. To demonstrate EW's weight, an imaginary scenario called "Save Atlantia 2008" was created in which the Improved Many-on-Many (IMOM) software program was used to simulate EW effects.

Sweet little teddy bear book.......2005-08-05
This little book measures approximately two and a half inches across by three inches high, and contains a series of heart-warming quotations and pictures of teddy bears. It would make an ideal small gift for a child or for someone who collects bears and soft toys as it's beautifully produced and well photographed.
The bears photographed are a mixture of modern and older toys, and have been set up in a variety of scenes such as hanging up the washing or decorating a vase of flowers.
The quotes include the usual one from Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" and other sources and the book will make an enjoyable addition to the bear lover's bookshelf.

Best Resource Available!.......2006-11-13
Whether you sew doll clothes or Victorian costumes, this book is the best resource to have! It covers the entire Victorian era, describing the chosen costumes in great detail. It discusses the general shapes of each period, what undergarments were used, what fabrics were popular, what details to add, what accessories to use.
There is a wonderful section on handsewing, showing you how to use period sewing techniques, plus sewing specific to the Victorian period, such as piping. Another section shows you how to finish your seams -- French seams, flat felling, etc. The patterns are clear and easy to size up or down. The diagrams are excellent, clearly showing you each step.
I make oaak fashion dolls, and sew Victorian costume for myself, and I find myself opening this book at some point during every project!
A Rave Review.......2006-05-27
Sewing Victorian Doll Clothes is a wonderful source book for historical costumes with a wide range of workable patterns.
It is a wonderful reference for the doll collector who is interested in recreating historically correct clothes for china or bisque dolls. The range of styles in broad, and the instructions are clear even for the novice at sewing. Without question, this is one of the finest books on this subject that it is possible to find. It is worth every dollar spent.
Delightful and Helpful - a must for Heirloom sewing!.......2001-12-27
This is a wonderful book with many illustrations. There are extensive patterns, wonderful details, could go a little more in-depth with the patterns and have a little more variety of Victorian clothing. A wonderful book, it is a must for the heirloom sewing library!
This is the pattern book I have needed for years!.......2000-08-23
I have now tried most of the patterns in this wonderful book, and even with my limited sewing skills, I have been very pleased with my results. I have particularly enjoyed the tips for constructing clothes without patterns. The simple smock dress idea works well for my Ginnys, as well as for my composition baby dolls and small antique bisque dolls. I'm looking forward to learning to make hats and purses. I have a stack of old leather gloves just waiting to be made into the darling shoes pictured in the last chapter of the book.
The BEST book on sewing doll clothes on the market!.......1999-07-27
The book is a must-have for anyone wanting to sew reproduction clothing for dolls. This book includes wonderful color plates of the antique dolls chosen for the study. You can clearly see every detail of the wardrobe. There are many underwear items included : corsets, hoops, bustles, etc. There is a large detailed explaination of each dress, listed by the color plate. Then, there is a large section which not only tells you how to sew a duplicate of the original, but which includes much useful information about the period of time the dress represents. Finally, there is a wonderful bibliography and an excellent section on how to hand sew the items, carefully detailing descriptions of each stitch used.

In both homes and furnishings, the modern look, known for its clean, spare lines and inventiveness, elicited strong opinions--which is exactly what classic designers like Ray and Charles Eames, George Nelson, Eero Saarinen, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe intended. Classic Modern: Midcentury Modern at Home celebrates the work of these innovators and the longevity of their designs as we move into a new millennium.
Starting off with side-by-side photos, we see several modern houses when they were originally built and how they now appear. They look both futuristic and contemporary in the companion photos and are impressive in the way they integrate easily into the outdoors. The first section of the book concentrates on the "flexible system of elements tailored to the climate and topography of a certain site" and "interior spaces [which] flowed into one another, rather than being divided by separate boxes connected by hallways." The second section invites you to tour especially significant or evocative modern estates, some of which are inhabited and others which are showpieces. Particularly interesting is the curved glass Palm Springs home of Raymond Loewy, designer of the Coca-Cola bottle, which is arranged around a free-form pool lapping the desert. A subsequent chapter examines modern architecture in the suburbs where the midcentury influence can be seen on a smaller, less expensive--but not less impressive--scale.
The photos show the sophisticated appeal of midcentury modern and illustrate the careful placement furniture for the greatest effect. And for those who want to know more about the furniture and the architects, the author has included lists of "where to buy" and biographies in the back of the book. --Dana Van Nest
Book Description
Midcentury modern is back. From the American classics of Charles and Ray Eames to the Scandinavian elegance of Arne Jacobsen, nothing is hotter today than the endlessly inventive, sophisticated work created by modern architects and designers in the 1940s and 1950s.
This beautifully illustrated book is an unparalleled look at the revolutionary design of the midtwentieth century -- a period that today reigns unchallenged among style setters and a new generation of homeowners and collectors. Filled with stunning photographs of landmark midcentury houses and exuberant collections of furniture and decorative arts, Classic Modern tells us why, where, and how midcentury modern design came about. It also shows how people are living with the brilliant work of such timeless figures as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, Richard Neutra, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, and Marcel Breuer, not to mention the prodigious Eameses.
Showcasing the style's elegance, wit, and humanism, Deborah K. Dietsch introduces the basic tenets of midcentury modernism, walking us through the era's distinctive look and presenting influential homes by inventive European architects such as Neutra, Mies, Breuer, and Albert Frey. She then follows this dynamic style as it moved into mainstream American culture. When European sophistication met American invention, led by the charismatic polymaths Charles and Ray Eames, the result was dazzling. Recapturing the energy and optimism inherent at midcentury, the book concludes with a visit to outstanding collections that show how comfortably modern pieces fit into today's homes. And, for those who want to furnish their own residences with appropriate reproductions and the classic pieces still being made, an illustrated catalogue presents fifty items, from the Eameses' famed molded-plywood lounge chair and Nelson's whimsical marshmallow sofa to Saarinen's pedestal chairs and the sensuous ceramics of Eva Zeisel.
Classic Modern is a marvelous celebration of the twentieth century's most important contribution to design. Hipper than ever, midcentury modernism is here to stay -- an American classic.

Modernism Revistied.......2005-06-22
While this book is not comprehensive I find myself revisiting it often. It was among the first, or perhaps the first exposure I had to mid-century furnishings. I checked it out of the library and after a few days I knew I had to own some of those pieces. Not long afterwards I realized I needed this book as well and it has become not only a staple but a benchmark against which I measure other books.
Weather I pick it up to flip through the pages and gaze on the photos like the old friends they have become or I digest a bit of the text again I always come away with something new and a deepened appreciation for these little pleasures of life.
Eye Candy for the Modernist.......2003-09-04
Some critics say that Mid-Century Modern designs tend to look cold and passive. Many, however, including myself, believe this design style to be beautiful and exciting. Classic Modern: Midcentury Modern at Home was written for those of us who love the designs from the 1950s and early 1960s. The photos and captions alone are enough to excite and inform, but when combined with the text, they really add insight into how the designs were created and how they can be re-created in our own homes. I used to consider myself a midcentury modern enthusiast, but after having read this book, I consider myself a bit of an expert. Especially useful are the catalog of furniture and the "Further Reading" sections at the back of the book. One last surprise was the portrait at the back of the book which pictures six of the most prominent designers from the era, including my personal favorite, Charles Eames.
Best of the Bunch.......2002-03-20
Having recently read over a dozen books on classic modern homes and interiors, including brand new ones like Modernism Rediscovered as well as classics like Schulman's own Architecture and Its Photography, I was still in awe at the quality and quantity of photos in this book. They're almost all full or double-paged and in brilliant color. There is an occassional paired "original period" photo in black and white for an interesting contrast. Unlike some reviewers, I found the text informative because views of the clients and current owners are included - as opposed to just the critics and designers, as in most of the other books. The several appendices are very useful, as well. I would highly recommend this book at more than its "suggested" price, let alone at its incredibly low bargain price. Get it while you can.

Terrific coffee table book. Gorgeous photos with rarely published interiors of well known mid-century homes. If you don't appreciate furnishings and design of the 1950's now, you will after seeing this book! Friendly text-the reader "gets to know" the residents and creators of these spaces.
Coffee Table Book.......2000-12-17
While the photographs offer an interesting view on the past and present use of these dwellings, we were disappointed with the quality of the writing. The book would be better if left as a photographic essay.
