Positvely Useful Advice.......2006-10-12
This book is absolutely excellent. The author writes in an easy to understand manor and describes exactly why a cat behaves the way a cat does. I've been working with cats for over 20 years and actually have learned something from this book.
The author's case studies take you through each behavior problem and how she solved it for that particular owner. Of course, there are many more problems that exist than are defined in this small book; however, the author covers a wide range of issues on indiscriminate urination, aggression, wool sucking, etc. Many other issues owners will encounter are usually just variations of what the author already touched on. In fact by the time you've finished reading the book, you'll be thinking like a cat.
Psycho Kitty was well worth the price. I enjoyed it so much that I just ordered several of her other books.
Good Company.......2006-07-01
I read this book while sitting on a plane that took 3 hours to take off due to bad weather. I can't express how happy I was that I brought it with me. The book has numerous tips on how to work with a difficult cat (just like mine), but most importantly, the author explains why a cat might be misbehaving, that is, what is your kitty trying to tell you. Pam Johnson-Bennett does know about cats behavior!!
Read It And Weep.......2005-07-16
Yes, there are some crazy cats in the world, and George Herriman the artist who created "Krazy Kat" had his finger on their pulse (or paw). Here in this book we find out what is the rationale behind some of their apparently nutty behavior. What a lifesaver this has been, and I'm sure many misunderstood cats have literally had their lives spared because someone read this book and realized what was wrong.
Did you ever read ANDROCLES AND THE LION? The "King of the Cats," brought down and humbled because of a thorn in the tender flesh of its paw. And only one man, a buffoon, realized what was wrong and how to make things right.
Pam Johnson-Bennett is like Androcles, and her tips on how to restore your pet's mental balance will put YOU at ease too. Sometimes a cat gets a little crazy when his or her water doesn't taste right. There's a delicate equilibrium in a cat's life, and think of the enormous insecurity and delicacy of a pet's life. They are in bondage for all intents and purposes, and the life of a slave (even a pampered and petted slave) has its own rigors. Sometimes these burst out into bad or destructive behavior, like a raisin in the sun.
Outside of that the book is a lot of fun. We've all been there, and now we'll find out why!
Excellent. Fun to read and great advice........2005-05-14
I have kept cats all my life and had become resigned to the strange or destructive behaviors that they sometimes display. I thought there was nothing I could do to change them, so I just accepted the bad with the good. The author of this book really understands cats and provides good, practical solutions to the problems that cat owners have. If you are about to give away or euthanize your cat because of a behavior problem, please give this book a try first.
psycho kitty.......2002-08-09
I just got my first pet, a kitten, two months ago. Before I got her I read tons of books on cats and what to do or not to do. But many of the books were very dry and did not address behavior problems. Then a friend showed me Psycho Kitty and I read it in one afternoon. The book is easy to read and understand. And while the stories Johnson-Bennett tells are anecdotal, they do point out things we stupid humans do TO and FOR cats. I found out that some of the things I was doing were ENCOURAGING psycho kitty behavior.
The author does not talk down to the pet owner and provides practical advice. By writing this book, she is also telling us that we are not alone with our cat's weird and fascinating behaviors.

Book Description
Sammy’s never been what you might call lucky. But finding a dead cat on her birthday? That ranks up there in her top-10 unluckiest moments. And not just because it was the ugliest dead thing she’d ever seen. No, it was more the chain of events that happened after.
Like getting hosed down by a crazy cat lady who blames Sammy for her pet’s violent end. And being chased through an alley by a guy with a cleaver. And being thrown in the ring by a cranky pro-wrestler called
El Gato—oh, no wait, that was the good part of her day.

GreAt BoOk!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-02
This book is written very well and the end is, as always pretty surprising. Now to the story...Sammy's life is a disaster: She lives in her Grams' apartment which is only for seniors, so she always has to sneak up the fire escape. Her mom left her for a career in Hollywood and then suddenly she shows up on Sammy's birthday. She came to tell Sammy that she isn't turning fourteen, she's turning 13 because her mom had made a fake birth certificate. Sammy is really upset but then she and her friend Holly find dead cats all over town in garbage cans and they start solving the mystery. At a new wrestling school, Slammin' Dave's,(where Sammy also learns some nice wrestling moves) there's a wrestler, El Gato who looks very scary since he always has a cat mask and costume on and never takes it off, so Sammy and Holly become very suspicious. In the end El Gato turns out to be someone totally different than they would have thougt. How they solve the mystery and find out who the cat killer was, will grab you and make you want to keep reading and reading. I really enjoyed the book and read it in only two days and I recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries. The characters are described good and likable except for Heather and her friends,Sammy enemies. The book is also a real page-turner and i would recommend the other Sammy Keyes books as well. I hope this review helped and that you enjoy the book as much as I did.
Sammy Keyes.......2006-09-28
Sammy Keyes and the Psycho Kitty Queen was written by Wendlin Van Draanen. It all started when Sammy found a dead cat in the dumpster. She thought a lot about the cats after she found another one in the garbage. After her own cat went missing, Sammy had to see what was going on.
This book was exciting and suspenseful because of all the action. I liked the ending because the problem was solved. Sometimes I find myself a lot like Sammy and I can picture myself as her in the book. The main problem was very unique, weird, and interesting because the author used dead cats. The characters seemed very real to me because the whole book was realistic fiction.
Wendling Van Draanen uses a deep voice throughout the book. Very few of the words she used were unknown to me. It was interesting that every time I came to an unusual word she described it. Unlike other authors, Wendling ended every chapter in a suspenseful way. I think she has a lot of creativity to come up with this great book.
Out of all the books I've read, this one is one of my favorites. I liked it because between the rising action there are many problems. Every time Sammy solved a problem, I thought the book was going to be over. I recommend this book because it's suspenseful, thrilling, and funny.
Sammy Keyes and the Psycho Kitty Queen might be a little weird at the beginning. You'll want to stop reading because a couple of cats died and there's a weird wrestler that doesn't take off his cat suit. There's a reason to all that, and you need to find out.
Look out for the Psycho Kitty Queen!.......2006-05-17
The book Sammy Keys and the Psycho Kitty Queen written by Wendelin Van Drannen is an exciting adventure! I would give this book 5 stars because it was a page turner and there were exciting events in every chapter. I just couldn't put this book down.
Join Sammy on a quest to find a mischievous cat killer. On the way she is chased down an alley by a man with a butcher knife and gets hosed down by a psycho kitty queen. If that isn't enough her archenemy Heather Ascota has the same birthday as her! Heather's brother gives Sammy a lucky horseshoe and Heather will do anything to get it back- even fight Sammy for it.
If you're looking for a story filled with adventure, laughs, and a psycho kitty queen, this is the book to pick!

Book Description
"There are cats that won't let you leave the house, cats that won't let you date-cats that are beyond bad they're psycho:
Kitties with abandonment issues
Felines with special needs and special powers
Cats who hypnotize their owners
Kitties who tell terrible lies
And so many more
Enjoy this uproarious set of cat cartoons from nationally syndicated cartoonist Nicole Hollander, and if you're dealing with a deranged kitty, know that you are not alone "
Customer Reviews:
Laugh Out Loud.......2007-06-03
Like a pair of inseparable wily twin felines, Psycho Kitties's diverting
collection of deceptively simple drawings is teamed with razor sharp,
wickedly witty text.
If you know any cats personally, you'd know these are just the kinds of
things they'd say. Example: Cartoon titled "Insincere Apologies of Cats"
shows a smart alec kitty knocking off the wedding couple ornament, as
he sits on top of the cake, saying, "I'm sorry, were you saving this cake
for a special occasion?"
Nicole Hollander's work is definitely 5 star, my only criticism with this
book is mechanical. The reproductions of the cartoons are a bit faded,
looking as though the printer was running out of toner. Or maybe it's
just that the cartoon images are a little small. Maybe it was just the
copy I received.
But there's a laugh on every page of Psycho Kitties, what could be a
better recommendation than that? Get it and snicker.

Book Description
This historical overview of the various styles of American shelf and wall clocks covers the centuries and gives visual pleasure every step of the way. The original owners of these clocks were interested as much in how they looked as in how they told time, so they are quite attractive and are good examples of the cabinet maker's art. The collector can acquire the majority of these beautiful clocks at relatively fair and modest prices, which makes them popular. Gathered from auction houses, museums, and private collections, over 1250 clocks are illustrated here in this newly revised and expanded second edition. Approximately one-third of the photographs are in color, with the remainder in clear black and white. Each is accompanied by an informative caption that will be great help to the reader. A newly updated value guide will be of invaluable assistance to the collector. In illustrating the early growth of the clock making industry in the United States, Mr. Ball has captured an important part of our history.
Customer Reviews:
This book is generally good for the beginner.A few mistakes.......1998-01-09
Very good photos of some hard to find clocks. Probably could have been arranged in a more logical order, ie. either by dates or start with shelf and work up to wall clocks. Some info not correct but overall good picture book.

Customer Reviews:
Roth rules.......2007-03-24
Mr. Roth, you're an inspiration and your work is nothing less than beautiful. I just started a (very) small side business photograhping homes for realtors and home owners. Your book helped me much with equipment selection, terminology, etc.
I felt well informed.......2007-02-13
The author keeps a tight focus on his subject. Lots of good photos to use as models. A wider range of issues covered than I expected. A pleasant breezy style. My only disappointment was that lighting was not given nearly as much coverage as I wanted. It's almost as if that part of the book's subtitle was dropped in at the last moment in recognition that that's what most readers would be after. I enjoyed the book and expect to keep returning to it for tips.
Some Nice Shots, A Few Good Bits of Advice..........2007-01-01
I was a little disappointed after reading through this book the first time. While the author is an experienced photographer, many of the photographs and rooms he uses as examples, are less than inspiring. No doubt each of us has days when we shoot ordinary looking homes to pay the bills, but that's not really what I paid to learn about in this book.
That's not to say there aren't *some* compelling photographs and useful tips for professionals, but there is more filler than gems. This book doesn't really seem to have an obvious audience. It's not nearly deep enough in a technical sense to get beginners up and running, and it's not advanced enough to be of great help to those who already know photography well, but who want to take things to the next level. One example is that the section with lighting diagrams (which is brief), doesn't even use examples where the diagram matches the neighboring photo. Call me crazy but in order to see the benefit of a specific lighting set up on a specific room, it helps to see the actual photograph of that room afterward, otherwise you're not comparing apples to apples.
Also, it is clear his knowledge of digital technology and Photoshop is lagging behind his knowledge of film photography. Some of the references he makes to "digital quality" are quite simply off the mark in today's context (and the book is only a year old). Unless you're forced into a very dark shooting environment, nicely lit interiors are where professional DSLRs (or digital backs), combined with Photoshop, can yield seemless and beautiful results. I had hoped for some detailed examples and ideas of how to achieve such results, but no such luck.
One final bit that bugged me: the author takes a very commercial approach to shooting interiors, where apparently it's the norm in his world to be able to completely re-arrange furniture in a room, bring in decorations and paintings from the outside, etc etc. In effect, he's describing show-room photography in someone's home, instead of shooting the essence of what the home owner or designer has created. These are two very different things!
See how many luxury realtors or reputable designers are going to let you (or some art director) move their clients' furniture and artwork around all day while you search for "the perfect shot". Not going to happen. In essence, this book should more aptly be entitled "Tips for Shooting Commercial Interiors", where everything is fluid and you can make a room or office into whatever you want it to be. Shots for advertising, essentially.
While it's not a total loss (just seeing some of the photos can give you ideas for your own work, and there is some good advice on using reflectors and such), this book is far from an authoritative reference on the subject of shooting home interiors or interior designers' work. Not unless you know some designers who like to work on-the-fly and photograph it as they go....
FULL OF USABLE KNOWLEDGE.......2006-12-11
This book is so full of knowledge that is not over poluted with hard to understand industry lingo, but a guide that an expert or an amateur can equally understand. The root of the word amateur is to love and with this book it is very easy to do jsut that. I personally love how it ties in all aspects of a shoot and love the synigery styling section where Roth recomends a team aproach to styling.
Not technical enough........2006-11-12
Yes, there are some diagrams, but poorly presented relative to other books on lighting. So the "Lighting" part of the title is misleading. There is plenty of pontification on theory and "what makes a good photo" but not too much on the photo's actual execution. Nothing on long exposure, stops, ratios, etc. So if you want a book on improving your creative eye or how do properly "art direct" the room, this book is for you. Don't get me wrong, the guy does great work. It would have been nice to see how.

Customer Reviews:
Good reference book.......2005-08-21
A good reference book for photographers breaking in the field of interior photography, with digital and/or film equipment.
Not the right book for you.......2005-01-06
This book is not good at anything in particular especially if you are doing or planning to do any kind of digital photography. It seems to me that the author is not a very good architectural photographer himself because most of the pictures you see in the book are terrible, even when used to ilustrate different points. When it comes to digital photography he speaks like he knows very little about what is possible to do today with a digital camera.
Not a source of inspiration or good complete information for anybody seriously getting into architectural photography.
First time I return a book to Amazon.
It's Just What the Title Says!.......2004-06-09
This book is a very useful and informative. It does a very good job of covering what makes professional interior photography work. Definitely a book for advanced amateurs or professionals. Would be great for a professional who is expanding their scope of work to include interior photography or who is looking for techniques or useful ideas. Harris does a very good job of describing appropriate camera and lighting equipment, lighting techniques, color correction processes, etc. The book is pretty much up-to-date and covers digital photography reasonably well. It is a very "hands-on" book from someone who obviously knows what they are doing. I probably would not recommend this to "snapshot" photographers, you might not get too much out of it.
A great book!.......2000-08-16
Michael Harries does a great job on this book. In this book he recommends the view camera (instead of the typical 35mm). This book isn't really going to teach all aspects of how to use this camera or the equipment. However, there is pretty good coverage concerning lights and how to correct color with filters. He also gives a really good run down on what equipment to buy, composition, and different types of film.
If you want to learn a lot about architectural photography and its equipment, this is a really good book. If you want lots of specifics on view cameras, you'll need a different book.
