Terrific book for all parents of kids & dogs!.......2007-08-14
This is one of the very best resources I've found for families with children and dogs. It has lots of practical kid-friendly and dog-friendly tips and ideas. I've recently read hundreds of books on similar topics while researching a book I'm writing, and this one really stood out. As a child/family psychologist, I was impressed with how solid it was, and as a therapy dog trainer, I thought the advice about dogs was spot-on! It deserves all the stars that everyone has given it!!
Practical and positive!.......2007-05-30
Colleen writes in a reader friendly manner. Her life experiences as Mom and dog trainer have brought together this wonderful resourceful book families can turn to time and time again! I recommend this book to all families I work with as it describes practical and positive solutions for challenging and hectic lives! :)
Two Thumbs Up!.......2007-04-06
There are certainly other kids and dogs books out there but, this one is so far the best I've found. Colleen Pelar gives great, practical tips for parents of children at all ages that can be put to use immediately. I don't have children but, am active in rescue and am always looking for more training to help adopters and I learned so much. This book will be required reading for all adopters with children going forward. GREAT read!!!
Finally-- a really great kids and dogs book!.......2006-04-22
Finally-- A really good book on how to live with kids and dogs. Most dog trainers don't have a lot of good things to say about kids (although I overhead one saying that she thought they tasted a lot like chicken!), but Colleen has written a book for parents by a parent who is also an excellent dog trainer. Colleen tells it like it is, from someone who knows. Her child-friendly, family-friendly and dog-friendly approach is realistic, safe, and right on the mark. I cannot say enough good things about Ms. Pelar or this book. Please read it and get a copy for your favorite family!
As the director of training for the 4th largest shelter in the country, I see every day that the consequences of people not having this information is that dogs end up in shelters. I applaud Ms. Pelar for writing it and helping keep dogs in their homes through education.

A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.......2005-11-11
Living with Kids and Dogs... Without Losing Your Mind is a no-nonsense advice guide for parents that emphasizes realistic and practical solutions to common parent/pet-owner problems. Dog training facility manager Colleen Pelar covers when not to get a dog (children under 5 are not old enough to interact with a pet responsibly and require supervision around animals; children in general cannot be burdened with the requirement to care for the pet or see it taken away - if the parent doesn't have the resources to follow up on a child's dog care then the family should not get a dog!), how to select an animal with suitable family temperament, how to prevent dog bites, and issues specific to children of various age groups from infant to teenager, and how to help one's children say goodbye to a beloved family pet when it passes on. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this no-nonsense, plain terms guide to dog care and managing a family with kids and dogs. A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.

Not Just a Training Book.......2007-06-07
Don't let the title stop you from buying this book. While the author draws parallels between parenting and puppy-raising (and there are many; I have no children but can carry on a pretty detailed parenting discussion!), she does NOT advocate viewing dogs as human/children.
This delightful book is a guide to raising your dog through all life stages. As such, it talks more about teaching and manners and liveability than about formal training. How many of us really need to obedience train our companion dogs? But all of us need to raise them to be mannerly and to adapt to a mostly-indoor, human-oriented life. Couching her excellent advice in child-rearing terminology makes it easier to grasp and apply. Even when she disagreed with some popular advice, I understood her logic and largely agreed with her.
This book, along with a current veterinary guide, are really all you need to embark on a great life with your dog companion. (If problems arise later, you can always supplement. Some great options are Outwitting Dogs: Revolutionary Techniques For Dog Training That Work!, and also the tv show that is the basis of It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet (the show is more problem-focused.)
Don't Let the Title Mislead You.......2007-04-25
The author does not recommend owners treat their dogs like children, rather that a good parent shares the same qualities as a good leader. Trish King is a popular trainer, speaker and now author and her book addresses practical approach to common dog training and behavior problems at all stages of a dog's life, including the difficult adolescent stage, where most dog owners have trouble.
Without trendy phrases like "calm-assertive" or "dominance", Trish King effectively educates readers on actual dog behavior and how to avoid and address behavior problems.
Good for all owners.......2006-03-02
This book has chapters from choosing a puppy to handling aging dogs and a great chapter on the most common behavior problems. Since I handle most of the behavior problems in my area, I read carefully how the author approached these in puppies and adults and was very pleased with what I read. Wouldn't it be great if all dog owners would learn to use such great information!
A wonderful resource.......2005-03-05
This book is a great read for anyone who is interested in maintaining a trusting relationship with your dog while providing the structure and boundaries required. It is very readable, with good humor, and the recommendations very doable for anyone who owns a dog. The dogs will be grateful if you read this book.
Ways to deepen the bond.......2005-02-01
Trish King is a font of canine information. The notion that an unwanted animal behavior can be eliminated, not by using punishment, but by encouraging an overriding *desired* behavior, a seemingly simple theory, works as well with my Boxers as it did with my human children. Why didn't I make the connection sooner? I attended a dog training seminar last Fall in Madison WI at which King was a featured speaker, hoping that King's in-person speaking style would mimic her writing style, and I was not disappointed. Speaking as a pet owner who is ever on a search to learn new ways to deepen the bond with my canine companions, I found King's book to be insightful.

Pretty poor shape.......2007-01-15
This book was not in very good shape. I was chewed on which was okay I knew that but it has a lot of markings and highlights in it. I was disapointed.
Smiled !!.......2001-08-30
How many times Ive picked up a book about dogs to read, and by the third chapter got bored.......not with this book! I find it charming, funny, USEFUL, and so entertaining! Im not looking for gossip about Movie Stars, I leave that to The GOSSIP Magazines. My interest is in Puppies, and they have more than satisfied that issue. Good luck to you guys, keep up the good work!!!
Bow-WOW!.......2001-05-01
Jan Greye and Jesse Smith, who are professional dog sitters, have written a delightful book that manages to be full of useful information--things such as which breeds will run up your vet bill and how to get a puppy to take a pill--and is at the same time a joy to read. Lots of very funny anecdotal stuff about their experiences with their doggie clients and the dogs' owners. A nice departure from all those dry, encyclopedic how-to-raise-your-puppy-from-A-to-Z volumes.

Inspiring and Full of Practical Tips.......2006-07-21
This book is full of helpful tips and inspiring, real life stories for anyone caring for an elderly parent. A useful and uplifting book. I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own a medical supply business. I both capacities, I frequently talk with seniors and their children who are caring for them. I and recommending this book to them.
Caring for Parents by Delehanty and Ginzler.......2006-06-27
This book is an excellent reference for adults with older parents
progressively requiring more care from their children and other
care-providers. Generally, the family provides up to 80% of care
for the elderly. In my experience, this is true due to the high
cost of nursing facilities and the personalized care many older
people prefer. The authors mention that advocacy for the elderly
requires strong organizational skills. This is the understatement
of the year. Keep medical records, descriptions of key health
issues, physician rosters and any materials which will assist
you in determining what level of care parents require.
Most states allow physicians and providers to discard records
after 6 or more years. With this data in hand, create a home
medical tracking system for physicians, medications, physical
therapy regimentation, diet etc.
The book lists some classic sayings by noted personalities. i.e.
- "Life would be infinitely happier if we could only be born
at 80 and gradually age to 18. " Mark Twain
- "Raise children for old age as you store grain against famine."
Chinese Proverb
This book would be invaluable to children of old age parents
about to take on the role of caregiver or partial caregiver.
It lists some classic considerations many of us overlook in the
painful yet rewarding process of caring for elderly parents in
the twilight of life.

hilarious - if you have entered the maternal phase.......1998-05-24
Laughing out loud (while alone) is a sure indication that this small book is a winner. Hilarious is definately the adjective needed to describe the contents; the everyday trials of motherhood and the manner in which Murphy presents every detail. She seems to be a female Dave Berry/Erma Bombeck cross. The latter would be rolling on the floor with hilarity if she were to read this!

Book Description
Silverplating by electricity spawned a new industry in America in 1847. By the 1880's, over forty firms centered largely around Meriden, Connecticut, produced ornate objects of silverplate which have become highly prized. Today these are studied and collected as representatives of an interesting period of American history. The designs drew heavily on nature and the articles are ornamented with flowers, twigs, nuts, birds, bees, butterflies, squirrels, cows, goats, dogs, lizards, fish, young boys and girls, fairies and cherubs. In this book, the forms of American silverplate are identified, illustrated and grouped together; ice pitchers, card receivers, tea sets, baskets, butter dishes, napkin rings, toilet stands, flatware, and specially commissioned pieces. Closely related pewter, glassware, and silver are discussed as they affect the silverplate industry.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderfully informative book on a tricky subject........1999-11-21
A great book by an obviously intelligent bloke, I personally would have liked to have found out more about the author's family. I hear that his father S. W. Amos has written books on electronics and that his son, John Amos (23) is a mover and shaker in the financial services industry. I digress, the book is good value for money and I truly recommend it to all model railway enthusiasts!
