7-day puppy housebreaking book.......2007-10-10
I did like this book but I just wasn't able to housebreak my puppy in 7 days. My puppy had already been trained to urinate on potty papers in the house and it was going to take some time to re-train him to go outside. Plus it would be a lot of work on my part. I read through the whole book in about an hour and it has a lot of good advice on how to train and re-train your puppy to be housebroken.

A must have!.......2007-09-16
I have had many dogs, but never a puppy, so I was worried about the housebreaking process. If you follow this book, your puppy will be housebroken! I highly recommend this to any dog owner that needs help in housebreaking!
GREAT SYSTEM!!!.......2007-08-24
My wife and I decided we'd like to have a dog (neither of us had had one before). We researched breeds and a training and settled on a Bishon Frise (playful, great family dogs, but a little stubborn to train) and this book. WOW!!! That's all I have to say.
We followed this book to the T, waited and waited and waited and then all of a sudden it just clicked... Our little man was peeing on his paper. The only thing I'd say is that we'd intermittently walk him outside and now he goes outside if we're walking him, or goes all-day inside on his paper if we need to leave him for a few hours to run errands. We'll even bring him to our friend's house, drop down a newspaper and he'll play all day and when he's ready do his business on the paper. In fact, most of our friends ask (if not encourage us) to bring our little man! I'd highly recommend this book to first-timers.
Follow it to the T, have faith in the system, and you'll see it click. Good luck!!!
More relevant for older pups (12 weeks and up).......2007-05-22
Although the summary and reviews said that this book was good for puppies, it is really meant for older pups (4 months and up). For anyone housebreaking a puppy, most of the puppy books have better information for the younger puppies (8-12 weeks).
house breaking your dog.......2007-05-07

It is worth the time to make these beautiful paper scultures.......1999-02-04
I would recommend this book to anyone who like to create something unexpectedly lovely. I give these as gifts. At first this looks impossibly difficult, but with a little patience and persistance they will look just like the models in the book.
A great book for summer school art teachers!!!.......1998-06-15
While living in Japan I "accidentally" picked up Mr. Chatani's book. I was instantly amazed at the cleverness of the projects. There were famous castles, buildings, bridges and monuments. With less than $50 worth of paper, knives, and glues I began my first efforts at imitating Mr. Chatani's wonderful work. My first few projects (Nagoya Castle and the Duomo in Milano)were not very impressive, but after a week of serious effort, I began making cards that were really impressing friends and family. Then, after gaining more confidence, I began to improvise a bit, using oddly textured and colored papers, and even delicately painting the cards.
Now, as a high school teacher, I will be teaching a summer school class next month using the basic techniques learned from Mr. Chatani's book. He has had a great influence on me through his books.
He is a wonderful author, and the projects in his books are truly brilliant!
I hope he, or some one he knows, is able to pass on my sincere thanks, and the hope that he might be able to contact me or my school in the near future--perhaps with just a few words of encouragement or advice for my young pupils, who are about to study and learn from his books.
Thank you for your wonderful work Mr. Chatani!

Book Description
Tucked between the housing developments and golf courses of the Orange County coast lies a small settlement of rustic beach cottages seemingly frozen in time. Crystal Cove Cottages is the first history of this uniquely preserved beach spot that has lured travellers and campers since the 1920s. Deemed by the National Register of Historic Places to be "the last intact example of California beach vernacular architecture," it is now a registered state park whose cottages are newly available for public overnight visits. From silent-film location to rum-runners' hideout, scenic setting for a vibrant landscape painting community to 1950s luau-party headquarters, Crystal Cove has all the while remained a bohemian yet family-friendly village. Ten sidebars on notable individual cottages highlight the Cove's distinct and often amusing architectural evolution. Crystal Cove Cottages captures the nostalgic ambiance of seaside Americana.

From the dust cover of this beautiful book to the last pages, readers are treated to beautiful photography, copies of lovely paintings, and a narrative about the history of this unique place on the CA coast. The book is divided into time frames starting in 1917 and continuing to 2001. Each segment gives the reader a glimpse into the recent past, of simplier times and the quest for life on the CA seashore. This book is very readable, a feast for the eyes and one that will join my permanent collection of very special books. Suitable for display as a prized coffee table book.

A MAJICAL JOURNEY INTO COTTAGE LAND.......2007-02-15
I never thought a design book would become one of my all-time favorites...but this book is the exception. If you're ready to curl up with a warm cup of tea, a lap blanket and an exceptionally good book, filled with wonderful photographs of charming cottages...this is your ticket. I could not put it down until well past midnight, when I had read it cover-to-cover. Even now I go back to it once a week for enjoyment and inspiration. It makes you really think about the kind of home you want to live in with the people you love most and the kind of home you want your children to remember their childhood in. [Warning: It will make the big, boxy, look-alike, "I've finally made it!", homes you see now even uglier!]
Nine California Style Cottages.......2004-06-13

Looks like a great book.......2004-06-11

Very dissapointing.......2006-07-19
I read every book relating to Interior Design, 2nd homes, country homes and cottages. The photos in this book were way too dark and the type was way too small.
You need to have this book.......2001-07-16
You need to have this book if you need to take mini-vacations away from your stressful routine. This is a wonderful book. Beautiful design, beautiful photos, excellent narrative. Of my 100+ design/decorating books, this is in my top 5 favorites, a position it has held for over 2 years. Like another reviewer, I also appreciate knowing the homeowners' names. Sometimes I see their homes showcased in other books published after this one, with different photo angles, or perhaps updated accessories, and I feel like I'm keeping in touch with old friends.
Wonderfully eclectic.......2000-04-08
This is perhaps my favorite interior design book. Each space featured has a warm, unique and personal style that is not usually seen in the typical glossy interior coffee table books. Many of the homes are vacation or weekend cottages but they all share a feeling of great comfort and individual charm. I not only enjoy the beautiful photographs but the text reveals the personality of the owners and how the spaces reflect their lives. "California Cottages" brings a refreshing view of eclectic, somewhat bohemian living spaces that feel intimate and real. It's also nice to have a West coast perspective among the many interior design/style books that tend to favor East coast locales.
great book with beautiful photography.......1999-08-12
I highly recommend this book if you like the relaxed, and simply elegant cottage look.
A BOOK TO LOOK AT OVER AND OVER AGAIN!.......1999-02-25
I bought this book on a whim about two years ago and thought it would be like most of the decorating books I own. I would skim through it, read it, then put it away to take up space on my bookshelf. Not so! The book sits on my coffee table in my small, adorable NYC apartment, which I rented after being inspired by the homes in this book. I have read every word in this book at least three times and feel like I know the owners of each of the homes pictured. My favorites surprisingly change from time to time as I spot things I never noticed before. I recommend this book for anyone to whom his home is his cottage. It's wonderful.
Book Description
"The Cottage exudes the upmarket serenity of old LaJolla. Sunlight streaming in teh windows makes pale yellows glow; mellow jazz recordings waft through the dining room and into the palm-shaded patio; pretty waitresses in short shorts carry fruit-garnished dinners of salubrious California food," says author Michael Stern.
Southern California Cooking from The Cottage captures the romance, the relaxation, and the good life of The Cottage itself. Included are the recipes that have made The Cottage one of Southern California's most beloved restaurants with breakfast items such as muffins, coffee cakes, Greek, Italian, and seafood omelets, Belgian waffles, and oatmeal pancakes. From the lunch and dinner menu there are light Southern California seafood and pasta dishes, signature soups and salads, as well as traditional American classics. The book includes an eight-page color insert.
The Cottage is the ninth restaurant to be chosen by Jane and Michael Stern for their Roadfood cookbook series, which celebrates the finest regional restaurants in the United States.

Hideous eyestrain and worst index on the planet!.......2007-03-20
This book might be fine if the publisher had not chosen to print the ingredients in pale yellow (making them IMPOSSIBLE to read). That was undoubtedly to discourage photocopying, but defrauding the innocent customers who legally purchased the book should not have been an option. Also, it is almost impossible to find anything in the horrible index; it was a though they didn't want you to locate their recipes. In short, a mammoth disappointment.
Excellent!!.......2005-09-03
Eating at the Cottage in La Jolla is a real treat and I'm just so happy with this cookbook!! So far everything I've made from it has turned out to be top notch. I had guys begging me for the brownie recipe. My personal favorite is the french toast! You won't be disappointed with this book. It's one of the few cookbooks I actually use on a regular basis!

Robin Williams and Sally Field lived the dream of many in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire--residing in a Queen Anne cottage in San Francisco. Richard Sexton, who himself lives in a small hillside cottage overlooking the city by the bay, has translated his passion for these quaint, rustic, and informal dwellings into a volume of captivating color images. You can live the cottage life vicariously through Sexton; his photographs have an almost three-dimensional feel that gives you the sense of being there. Picturing yourself having lunch on the deck of a houseboat shown in these pages is a breeze, for he is a master of lighting and mood.
Book Description

Less is more in this small book about small homes..........2002-07-18
I liked the book. Its not a builder's treatise nor a decorator's reference, but it contains elements of both, with a little landscape design thrown in for good measure. Its an abbreviated look at the essence of cottage living, what makes the cottage lifestyle unique and (for some) worthwhile. And it's illustrated with a cross-section of styles from the San Francisco Bay area, from Maybeck to Modern, Victorian to Houseboat.
I find the photos relaxing, informative, and inspiring. The text is thought-provoking without being pseudo-intellectual, enthusiastic without being preachy. The book seeks to examine the pro's and con's of cottage living in less than 1000 sq. ft., and to portray the beauty in these San Francisco gems.
The book, like the cottage lifestyle it espouses, is neither large nor showy, but will be appreciated by those who would trade size and complexity for style with an open air of honest simplicity, who prefer herb tea over canned soda pop, who understand the essence of the artist's dictum "less is more".
An extremely boring little book.......2000-12-06
I read about this book in an amazon customer review that was attached to another book, so I got this. Mistake! Iwas hoping to get some ideas and inspiration, but all I found here was a lineup of depressing little homes. And mostly in beiges and brown. I couldn't wait to escape from the pages of this book. Also, the book's title suggests that this will be about cottages, in general, but it's about San Francisco area cottages. If you want cottage-style decorating, this is not the book for you. It won't help you much if you want to build a new cottage either. it's more like a little term paper on one region's homes.
The classic book on San Francisco Bay Area cottages.......1998-09-03
I am a native San Franciscan living in a middle-of-the-block cottage in what the author calls "that quirky San Francisco tradition of a back yard house." With the assistance of Sally B. Woodbridge's excellent historical introduction, Richard Sexton describes our San Francisco Bay Area cottages perfectly. The superb photographs complement quotes from some of the owners regarding what they think about their cottages: "Living in a cottage is somewhat like living on a ship. One learns to be very selective about possessions. The trade-off is the uniqueness of the living experience." And "Finding your cottage is like Goldilocks finding the chair that is just right. It wraps around you in cozy fashion and all seems right with the world." I've given copies of this book to friends who live elsewhere because it captures not only the joy of living in one of these cottages but helps all of us, no matter where we live, gain a better sense of home.
A mini-vacation between two hard covers........1998-04-14
An informative, enjoyable, aesthetically pleasing book about the cottages and cottage styles of San Francisco. The first chapter tells the story of how San Francisco cottages developed, and then specific cottages are showcased. Many views are of the exteriors, but some include interior photos with the homeowners' stories and quotes. Many individual cottages and styles are shown, providing variety and a feast for the eye. This book is a great "get-away" when you can't actually get away, and leads to very pleasant daydreaming.
