A Must Have.......2007-07-18
This is a must have for any dog owner. It covers it all. From puppyhood to senior dogs (and resources for when your dog is gone), it tackles all the tough questions. It's like the "What to Expect When You Are Expecting" series but for dogs or like WebMD for dogs.
Every time my dogs sneezes too many times, I pick up the book. If he's panting too much, I pick up the book. It calms my fears and lets me know when I need to call the vet for things. We recently had to put our dog to sleep and it described the process step-by-step so we knew what to expect once we got to the vet office.
I really can't say enough about this book other than I wish I had found it a few years earlier.
One of the best hound health guide books!.......2006-02-28
This is one of the best and aptly name guidebooks offering credible advise on health, nutrition, common problems and prevention for hounds. Written by a writer-turned-vet, the book did exactly what the author had set out to do: "To save people from making unnecessary trips to the vet, and yet rush them in when their dogs really needed to be there".
Having three dogs of my own, I could recount ad nauseam first-hand horror encounters with vets who were either too commercial or inexperienced or mediocre or all of the above: there was this one vet who told me something as ridiculous as neutering my dog would give him testicular cancer (huh?!); another who misdiagnosed the onset of ringworm as a mere scratch on its paw (later developed into full-blown skin infection afflicting me in the process); another who wanted to jump into operating on my dog following a mere bout of vomiting (the book discussed at length many useful home remedies before resolving to show up at the vet's clinic!); and yet another who urged me to wait it out until my puppy had been through one or two heat cycles before getting her spayed for no apparent reason (the book brought to my attention this delay would increase the incidence of breast tumor by 28%, no different from a dog who was never spayed in her entire life!). More often than not, I have experienced vets who shoved me out of their consulting rooms in a little more than 5 minutes without first hearing out the history/symptoms in full or performed detailed enough physical examination before formalizing on some half-baked diagnosis. Call it a streak of bad luck but I have been through enough vets to know that the best thing you could do to your beloved pets is to equip yourself with as much knowledge as possible in both prevention - whipping up a wholesome diet, social and exercise program - and cure when the inevitable hits home - knowing how to tell the grass from the weed in your pursuit of a vet and the book does precisely that.
In spite of my reservation over the author's advocacy over commercial pet food (fellow reviewers may wish to refer to Ann Martin's "Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food" and its sequel, "Protect Your Pet: More Shocking Facts" and learn why vets unanimously endorse pet food ad nauseam), as well as tune in on Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats for recipes and holistic/alternative medicine, this book is still highly recommended for its comprehensibility, readability and generosity of medical information from the viewpoint of a vet! A must-read!

Anything and everything you would want to know about the health of your pet. Use this book when going to the vet to educate yourself about the medications and issues the vet addresses. Determine if those tests are really necessary. Find out what medications are most often used for various ailments. This really is the definitive guide.

Excellent book, answers all problems and potential problems of all breeds, from puppies to senior dogs... Betsy Brevitz has all quality to be an excellent writer as well as a doctor, most informative dog health book I've ever read, but still light, fun and easy to read even for dummies (like me), who doesn't understand many hospital's vocabularies... a MUST BUY for a dog owner, dogs owner or even a breeder!

This is an excellent reference book on dog health. And, for those of you with a diabetic dog - it is `must' reading. I ranged far and wide, trying to find a reference book on pet / dog health that dealt with the topic of diabetes in more detail than a definition. This is the book! It answered all my questions, in layman language, and in the type of detail I needed, on my dog's diabetes, and what I could expect.
Other diseases are treated in as much detail, so that you, the owner, might thoroughly understand all that is involved with your pet's care.
Unlike other books of its kind, at the back, Hound Health provides resources on a variety of topics, such as health insurance, and what the owner should look for in insurance; alternative and complementary medicine, what it consists of and how to find a veterinarian practicing alternative health medicine; finding veterinary specialists; it also lists the veterinary colleges and their websits. This, to me, is the most helpful and complete book on the market of its kind.
I would recommend it to anyone wanting a handbook on health for their dog; I suggest it as required reading if you have a pet with diabetes!

Jack does a great job of producing the addresses of players. Just that simple. If you want to write them, here is your resource. Buy it new, don't get it used because you will be throwing money away.
Indispensable, but buy Vol. 11.......2001-07-20
This book is indispensable if you're a baseball autograph collector. I've gotten hundreds of autographs over the years using Jack Smalling's books. And if a letter is returned to you for an out-of-date address, you can simply send a copy of the returned envelope (with old address) to Jack and if he has a new address he'll send it to you for free! He's a heck of a nice guy. I'd also advice anyone buying the book to get on his mailing list (address is in the book) for autograph auctions and sales. I have no relation to Jack other than a satisfied customer, but he's truly the best when it comes to baseball autographs.
One caveat, the edition for sale here on Amazon has been replaced by Vol. 11, which is available on the Baseball America website.

Baker's book is the definitive work in the growing baseball autograph hobby.
It's too bad his publisher has not commissioned an update. The book is nearly ten years old and as such it's now about 25 players short and the autograph values are now just wishful thinking. Babe Ruth signatures for $495 -- I'll take a dozen!
Regardless of its age spots, if you are considering entering the hazardous world of baseball autograph collecting this book will be your core reference.

If you collect team baseballs, this is the reference book you will want to own. However be aware it only covers up to 1991. It is a great source of who the key players by year and team. It also lists all-star teams and key players. It does, however need to be updated to reflect current values, players and teams after 1991.

This book is written in a clear and concise style. It is illustrated by very nice color pictures.
The book contains usefull information but try to cover too many topics so at the end none of them is covered in enough details.
I would not recommend this book as the first book for a novice woodworker.
Good book, but be careful with plans!.......2006-06-29
This is a book that tries to accomplish a lot -- maybe too much. It covers many areas but often in a limited way. Nevertheless, it is good as a woodworking "survey" book and the material is attractively presented. There are a number of plans in the back of the book, and they are quite varied and different from what one often sees. Be careful, though! The author is not very careful with measurements and if you follow his plans blindly you may find that things don't come together as they should. If you spend some time with the plans first, you should be o.k.

- detailed and comprehensive
- magnificent colour photos throughout
- every topic, every tool jam packed with gems of tips, it seemed that everything had something new to add
- tells you what, why, how for every tool imaginable
note this is for HAND tools that means hand powered, NOT electric tools held in your hand, we're talking chisels etc.. here, but also things such as vices, sharpening stones etc.. etc.. it covers all the traditional tools.
very good, well worth a look, even if you experienced it is a good read, and if you are a beginner, well it is excellent

The present volume offers twelve studies dealing with feminine figures in Gnosticism and Manichaeism.
In Part One (Images et symboles), the Author unveils the hidden meaning of some feminine figures having played a role on the mythical scene of those trends. Some of these figures, borrowed from other traditions, have been deeply reworked by Gnostics or Manichees assuming thereby a new significance. An intermezzo (Passages) investigates the presence of women names in titles preserved in the Nag Hammadi Library and the relationship between a female protagonist and a specific literary genre.
Part Two (Histoire et réalité) reconstructs the portraits of some women, especially Manichaean, to whom the historical inquiry gives life again, thanks to a fresh reading of first hand sources, as well of heresiological or archeological testimonies.
Some of these studies have been previously published and have now been significantly updated and expanded. Some others are lectures on Feminine in Gnosticism and Manichaeism given by the Author in Sorbonne, Paris, since 1994.

Les douze études que rassemble ce volume abordent sous différentes facettes le personnage de la femme dans la gnose et dans le manichéisme. Dans la première partie (« Images et symboles »), lAuteur dévoile la signification cachée de quelques figures féminines qui ont joué un rôle sur la scène du mythe. Si les auteurs gnostiques et manichéens ont emprunté certaines dentre elles à dautres traditions, ils ont toutefois remodelé ces figures en profondeur en les chargeant dune nouvelle signification. La deuxième partie (« Passages ») sinterroge sur la présence de noms féminins dans les titres conservés de la bibliothèque de Nag Hammadi et sur la relation éventuelle entre une protagoniste féminine et le choix dun genre littéraire. La troisième partie (« Histoire et réalité ») reconstruit les portraits de quelques femmes, surtout manichéennes, dont les traits effacés se précisent grâce à une lecture originale de la documentation directe et des sources hérésiologiques, grâce aussi à lapport de larchéologie.
Une partie de ces études, publiée auparavant, paraît ici sous une forme largement amplifiée. Dautres reprennent les thèmes de conférences sur la femme dans le manichéisme, données par lAuteur à la Sorbonne entre 1997 et 2002.
