These recipes deliver a flavor "knock-out punch" with very little effort, and obviously, few ingredients. The recipes are kept simple b/c of the "only 5" format of this cookbook, so if one "wanted" to, one could add to (ad lib) with any given recipe one decided to make. If you want quick and "flavorful," you want this cookbook. ***This is the same book as the one with the white cover & states, "Easy Gourmet-Style Cooking with 5 ingredients" so don't buy both***
Uncomplicated "Gourmet".......2002-10-06
In a perfect world, most of us who know and enjoy good food would spend hours shopping and then lovingly prepare outstanding meals.
But we live in the real world, where assembling 35 ingredients and spending a few hours perfecting garnishes is a physical impossibility for most of us. Work, kids, aging parents and the everyday flood of must-do's often dictate a compromise between what we like to cook (and eat) and the effort we can put into it.
Anderson has proven "gourmet" is not a synonym for "complicated," and in this books shares with us her culinary strategies to enjoy cooking and serving elegant, tasty dishes prepared with only 5 ingredients. And Cream of Mushroom Soup is not an "ingredient" in Anderson's kitchen! We're not talking tuna casserole here.
Yes, it sounded too simple to me, too, but her recipes actually call for only 5 ingredients (excluding salt & pepper)and taste like you spent a weekend in the kitchen. I recommend the crabcakes, which are to die for!
This book is on my Christmas list for all my friends who love food -- but can't spend days assembling exotic ingredients.

Gourmet meals with minimal fuss.......2003-08-18
Sometimes it is absolutely amazing what a good cook can pull together. You will be amazed at the things you can create with "Easy Gourmet-Style Cooking With 5 Ingredients" at your side. Each recipe may only have five ingredients but you may find it a little more difficult to find some of them at the local grocery store. Of the recipes that I tried I had no problem finding the ingredients for all but two of them and those ingredients were still easily found by going to a local health food store. The book starts with an excellent educational section on the differences between various species of mushrooms, olives, cooking oils, cheeses, pears, etc. This section is a good place to turn when you are looking at a recipe that has an ingredient you are not sure about. The rest of the book is divided into the usual categories - appetizers, salads, accompaniments, main dishes, desserts - and several final pages with food equivalents, pan volumes, and a fine section on herbs.
For each recipe there is a page of "Chef's Notes" that includes optional ingredients, cooking tips, variations, and information on special ingredients as appropriate. All the recipes that I tried not only used only a few ingredients but also were easy to make and absolutely delicious. Some of my favorites were Lightly Battered Portobello Fries, Phyllo Sticks with Roasted Red Peppers and Provolone Cheese, Wild Rice with Toasted Pine Nuts and Cranberries, Seared Scallops with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce, Gorgonzola-Apple Stuffed Cornish Hens, and White Chocolate Cheesecake Bites. If you want to prepare a gourmet meal from no-fail recipes that are a minimum of fuss then you can't go wrong with this book. "Easy Gourmet-Style Cooking with 5 Ingredients" is sure to become a favorite in any kitchen and is a highly recommended book.

This is the most useful guide to collectable china that I have found. It is not only an exhaustive reference guide to Homer Laughlin's "Virginia Rose", but provides much information about other types of china as well. This book provides details and information that you can't find elsewhere.

Excellent reference for the pulled thread embroiderer with experience. This book is not a how-to but a reference source of 100's of stitches to be worked with joy.

Book completely in black and white making line drawings difficult to understand, especially for beginners. The few examples didn't have directions I could follow.

The third volume, published in two parts, is an account of every aspect of Iranian civilisation from the death of Alexander in 323 BC to the advent of Islam in the seventh century AD. As additions to the general objectives of these volumes, Professor Yar-Shater has included in this volume chapters on the institutional, administrative, legal, numismatic, linguistic and literary aspects of the period; and he further develops the scope of the volume by including studies of Iran’s interaction with neighbouring societies, of Iran’s mythical and legendary history, and of Iranian settlements outside the geographical boundaries of Iran and Afghanistan. This volume is the most comprehensive study published of this very important period of Iran’s history.

This volume covers the history of Iran from the collapse of the Il-Khanid empire (c. 1335) to the second quarter of the eighteenth century. The period is of special interest as one which, in the traditional view, witnessed the emergence of Iran as a â€~national state’. It is in the latter half of this era that moderate Shi’ism acquired the definitive hold on the country which has been maintained to the present day, and which helps to differentiate Iran from the other Islamic states of south-west Asia. In addition to chapters on commercial and diplomatic contacts with Europe - contacts usually fortified by a common hostility to the Ottoman Turks - which became prominent from the sixteenth century, the volume contains chapters on social and economic history, the arts and architecture, the exact sciences, religion, philosophy and literature.

A Comprehensive Survey.......2000-09-27
Dr Ehsan Yarshater is one of the most prominant Iranologists of today. His efforts have lead to some of the most comprehensive works in this area and include the present work as well as Encyclopaedia Iranica now published in fascicles.
The Cambridge History of Iran covers in its third volume that period of the Iranian history that begins with the fall of the Achaemenian Dynasty to the advent of Islam. Unlike the Achaemenian period or Islamic Iran, the sources of history are meagre for this period and much inference need to have been made in the construction of this important history especially as it pertaines to the Arsacede Dynasty. The local histories as they relate to the Arsacede period were forgotten in the early parts of the Islamic era and that which remains from the Sassanid era are the early Farsi and Arabic lierary works inspired by those of the Sassanids as well as religious texts preserved by the Zoroastrian communities in Iran and India. Other sources of this period include those written by other peoples mostly with political agendas against the Iranians they wrote about.
The volume is unique in that it makes use of the primary sources. In particular the use of a Sassanid legal text is extremely valuable. However the volume also presents some fundamental mistakes in that in using some religious text in presents them as the state of knowledge in the Sassanid era. This is like presenting the Adam and Eve story as the state of scientific knowledge in Christian Europe today.
Overall I give this volume four out of five.
