Excellent, except for the instruction on walking..........2007-10-03

This book is a fantastic resource! Everyone is *so* impressed at how well trained my puppy is - I owe it all to the information I read in this book. However, I am highly disappointed with the walking instruction. The book has very little information on how to teach a puppy or dog to walk well. There is some instruction ("the detailed section") on *corrections* for common walking problems, but again, there is little to no information with regards to how to really nip these problems. The author writes as though the dog's problems will disappear after 1 or 2 corrections. I walk my pup every day, and some days we get nowhere because all I do is correct, correct, correct. Some additional or supplemental information would be nice -- teaching techniques on how to start training your dog to walk right in the first place (maybe a timeline for walk-training), how many times you should be correcting, etc.

Brian Kilcommons is a highly experienced dog trainer who tells you everything you need to know when getting a dog. This book covers where to look for a puppy, how to select a puppy, 4 simple tests to use on puppies you are considering. The puppy's first day home, house breaking, feeding, walking, commands.

Also a great book for older dogs, it is never too late to start!

I bought this book when I bought my first dog and was desperately trying to train her. She was a perfect dog her whole life and I pulled this book out from time to time right up to when I needed the section on euthenizing my beloved friend.

Now it is required reading for my whole family because today we brought home a new puppy! I'm not worried about training her or raising her, because Brian Kilcommons is with me every step of the way!

This is the best book available. Clear, easy to understand and every training lesson is all on no more than 2 pages complete with pictures. I first got it because the San Francisco SPCA uses it in their dog training classes. I give it to all my friends when they get their first dog.

I got this because of my border collie. I now understand so much about him and I am very glad I got this book. It was hard to choose which book to get since there are so many out there. I researched many books before deciding on this one. If you want to understand your dog, buy this book! It helps to train and fix behaviors problems.

WE used this book years ago to train our Bordeaux and are now using it to train our Boston. Really has great advice. All our friends have borrowed it for their dogs as well.

This is the best casino chip price guide currently available. It is incomplete in that it does not include any of the Silver Strikes or metal slot token issues.

The price guide is a paperback, not a hardcover as listed in the title.

A Must for Casino Chip Collectors and Gaming History Buffs.......2007-01-11

If you collect casino chips, or are just interested in the history of casinos and casino chips, then this book is a must. Every conceivable chip from just about every casino that ever existed is displayed. Chips are all listed with an estimated value which is very useful, especially for the casual collector like myself. There is a thorough discussion of chip characteristics and grading criteria. The research that went into this book is phenomenal. Mr. Campiglia has painstakingly documented sales, scarcity and the history of each and every chip. The book is well laid out with color photos of each chip and many photos of the casinos they came from. There are also many interesting factoids and anecdotes pertaining to the history of casinos in America. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and refer to it often as I build my collection. I give this book my highest recommendation.

This book was created with the chip collector in mind. It has great color pictures of many chips and explains the values very well.No chip is left behind in this complete softcover compact book. This 3rd edition is a must have for any chip collector.

Lush designs...definitely not for the novice.......2001-06-18

Bradley's book is filled with beautiful tapestries, a history of needlepoint (or Berlinwork as it was orginally called) and wonderful graphs of the designs. With all of the different shades used in each project, this is definitely not for the novice. One annoyance about the book--she features photos of projects that aren't in the book! However, they are available in the kits she designs and in other books.

awesome, a joy to read.......1998-11-16

I collect medieval tapestry needlepoint and am always happy to find a book such as this. Unfortunately the copy I found was at the public library so I didn't have time to do any of the projects before I had to return the book. The projects look absolutely beautiful and the history attached to each was very interesting.

The charts in this book are a marvel in the use of color........1998-07-13

Elizabeth Bradley has written a masterpiece for the needlepointer who loves beautifully muted colors and traditional English design. As usual, Ms. Bradley begins with an informative introduction giving the history of Victorian canvaswork and then proceeds to give the reader a real feast with her adaptions of historical motifs. Among the choice offerings are The Parrot, The Spring Basket of Flowers, Barley Twists and Cornflowers, Rose and Primula Border, and Patchwork Pieces. The projects are suitable for the intermediate to advanced needlepointer. This is probably one of the premier needlepoint books in print today and should not be missed!

Beautiful patterns, beautiful book........2005-05-31

This hardcover book is remarkably well put-together, looking almost like a coffee-table book and not a pattern omnibus at all. Inside there are lush patterns with flavor text about how the author thought up the project and historical notes about why she chose this or that positioning or border.

The patterns are simple and easy to make, though it does make me crazy that the author doesn't include patterns for all pieces depicted -- I wonder if these were included as teasers to make readers seek and purchase additional patterns. Many of these neglected patterns were ones I'd dearly love to make, but there's lots of other stuff here for embroiderers. The lion tapestry, in particular, is graceful and looks genuine for its period, and I adore her unicorn even if what she came out with as a pattern bears next to no relation to the "inspiration" she says she used. Her fleur-de-lys pattern, as well, is magnificent and would make a splendid seat cushion (a project which she actually recommends), floor mat, or hanging -- definitely suggest to readers.

Overall I'm very happy I got this book and would recommend it, especially as a gift, for any embroiderer, especially for those who enjoy fantasy or medieval-style patterns.

My Favorite Book of Needlepoint Patterns.......2004-03-12

If you love to do needlepoint, this is a wonderful book to have. I've done several projects using DMC wool, and they all turned out beautifully. I always work on 10 point penelope (double thread) brown canvas, just because I find it turns out so nicely.

If you've never done needlepoint before, I think it's one of the easiest of the needle crafts, it just takes a bit of practice to master. I find working from a book like this one much better than a kit, because you can choose your fabric and wool, and you don't have to worry about a slightly off set pattern printed on the canvas. Though if you're a beginner, you may want to start with a simple kit to get the hang of it. This book does have a how-to section that discusses technique, materials and how to finish each project.

Most of the patterns in this book are based on medieval tapestries. I did the lion and the unicorn, making both into pillows that look beautiful together on my couch. They work wonders on adding a touch of elegance to any room. One issue I had about this book is that it shows a lot of projects that it doesn't have patterns for, and I haven't yet found those patterns, though I've seen kits. For instance, there are really neat little Zodiac patterns, but only four signs of the Zodiac signs are included.

My only other complaint is the mottled colors used in the patterns made it hard to distinguish between two of the colors on one pattern, but the projects are beautiful, and this wasn't a general problem throughout the book.

Getting supplies for needlepoint can also be difficult. There is a conversion chart in the back, however, that works well. I used DMC wool rather than the Appleton that was suggested, since it was all I could get. Though there were a few instances of colors no longer existing or being too close a match to another color in the pattern, it was easy enough to substitute.

I have several books of needlepoint patterns, and this one is by far my favorite. Some other good needlepoint books with patterns are "Graham Rust's Needlepoint Designs," "The Ehrman Needlepoint Book" and "Beth Russell's William Morris Needlepoint."

Excellent source of medieval designs; knowledgeable designer.......1999-06-09

Bahouth's sense of color and composition are outstanding, and her knowledge of the period make the designs not only beautiful but true. Charts are clear, and color numbers are given for both Appleton and Paternayan wool, depending upon what a stitcher has available.

My one criticism of the book, and the only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars, is that Bahouth includes pictures of finished projects for which she does not provide the charts. This is maddening, because it seems that the one which really grabs you is the one you can't stitch. This is not the only book with this characteristic; reviews of her other books have indicated the same problem.

Other than that, anyone who enjoy medieval design and would like to create rich, beautiful pieces should consider adding this book to the library.

Beautiful and fun designs.......1998-12-22

The designs in this book are wonderful and not difficult to follow, even for a beginner. My only disappointment was that several of the designs in photographs are not charted in the book. I wish she would do another book with some of them. I have made several pieces from this book as gifts.

Many designers have the gift of gab; few can actually write. Kaffe Fassett is a delightful exception. Indeed, the text of Glorious Interiors is something rare in interior design: a down-to-earth account of a complex and sophisticated personal style. Drawing inspiration from circuses, fairgrounds, the Watts Towers in Los Angeles, the liveries of Pakistani trucks, and Slavic peasant costume, Fassett dedicates his book to "all those with a touch of gypsy who share my vision." Going by the vibrant kitsch, the obsessive repetition, and the migrainous, fractal surfaces of his trademark interiors, one suspects that not a few of them have ended up, tragically, in decidedly minimal circumstances, complete with soft white walls and bars on the windows.

Fassett's embroidered flower gardens, frog cushions, trompe l'oeil flower plates, and postage-stamp lampshades teeter spectacularly on the knife's edge separating genius from schizophrenia; his text, meanwhile, really makes the reader think--in a way few other books have ever done--about the emotional power of the richly patterned traditions of eastern Europe and the Indian subcontinent. Fassett contends that Western interiors--the best of them evoking "a sterile beigeness ... that chilled me to the core"--have lost all sense of humor. And he knows just what we need to get it back.

Love the Charted Designs--those included, that is!.......2000-09-07

Kaffe Fassett is a designer that you either love or find almost sea-sickeningly over the top. I've got a foot in both camps--some of it is just too, too much--other things I want to make immediately. My main problem is the lack of charts. He states that one cushion can be easily coverted to a chair seat--true, if there were a chart to begin with. Now, I can understand that a wing back chair might be a one off, but there is no excuse for showing a tantalizing close up of a pillow without a chart! It is too frustrating. And there are far too many references to things that are available as kits from Ehrman--particularly when not all of them are still available. Still worth it for the charts that he does include and for some design ideas--if you are willing to just pile on the patterns!

A World of Color.......2000-04-17

I absolutely loved this book. Although I read it mainly for my interest in mosaics, I found many of the collages appealing as well. The photos are wonderful, colorful and display a great sense of creativity. What a happy feeling this rainbow of colors gives to a person inhabiting these unique rooms. And isn't that what decorating is all about? This book is a must for every creative mind!

This is one of Kaffe's best books, if not the best. The photos are beautiful, and the displays of his needlepoint tapestries or vests among the collections of furnishings, etc., in his home are truly beautiful. Stunning needlepoint rugs, both of which are available as kits as noted in the book, although the kits are simplified versions of the rugs. Some rag rugs with patterns to make them. Lovely paintings too, if you like Kaffe's style or at least find it appealing. Some needlepoint charts, although I wish there were many more charted items, although some are photographed sufficiently that they can be copied yourself. Just a beautiful book on home decorating, on needlepoint, and on lovely ideas for tapestries.
