Customer Reviews:
Clarifying what this book is for and about.......2007-10-08
One review claims that the games in this book are for large groups. That reviewer is clearly confusing this book with Roy Hunter's other books, entitled "Fun and Games With Dogs," which do involve group dog games. However, "Fun Nosework for Dogs" does not involve multiple-dog games. This is book is about ways to get you and your dog to have fun while your dog uses its nose to sniff things out. There are no activities designed for multiple dogs.
Many of the activities are a lot of fun, like "Hide the Thimble" in which you teach your dog to find items that you have hidden, using its nose. Many dogs really enjoy looking for hidden items, and this can lead to hours of enjoyable hide-and-seek for you and your dog. However, many of these games depend on prior training of your dog. A lot of them require your dog to know how to retrieve efficiently and on command; many others require your dog to be able to bark on cue. So a lot of preliminary work has to be done before you are ready to tackle many of these games, and this book does not really teach you how to train a retrieve (though it has some suggestions about teaching the bark-on-cue). Some of these games can be taught without any complicated prior training; but unless your dog retrieves and barks on cue, at least half of this book will be beyond your reach.
That said, this is a great book that teaches "nosework" beyond formal tracking or police work: stuff like hide-and-seek, hunt the thimble, finding lost objects, and even a card trick where your dog finds the card last touched by a guest. In that sense, it is a very valuable addition to the literature on working with your dog's smell ability. But a lot of the stuff in here is a challenge, to say the least.
meant for dog class.......2006-04-11
The games are mainly designed for a group of dogs in a class. If that is what you are looking for, then this is a good book. If you are not in a group, then maybe not.
As Advertised: It's Fun and It's Nosework.......2004-03-07
I'm surprised I'm the first to review this book. So far, it's a gem. Roy's writing is clear and direct, and the introductory games are creative and enjoyable. For me, the book is the next step after sit-down-stay. It presents the training in a format that is fun for you and your dog.
The first 1/3 of the book provides a series of games that set the groundwork for scenting and scent discrimination. The next 2/3 of the book handle tracking and searching. The book is full of facts and methods, and these methods are all about bonding with your dog. As a bonus to the whole process, your dog will learn a few great parlor tricks.
I am giving the book (4) stars because I don't have any other points of reference. Unleash the power of your dog.

Indispensible for Coverlet Collectors.......2000-08-30
Heisey's Checklist of American Coverlet Weavers is an indispensible reference in the library of any collector of American woven coverlets. Although this addresses only the weavers of figured ("jacquard") coverlets, even those of us who concentrate on the geometric coverlets, such as myself, will find this a rewarding read.
If you surf the on-line auctions for coverlets keep this by your computer. Take it with you to live auctions, antique shows, and antique shops. Many a "sleeper" is hidden under the lack of knowledge about American coverlets. Heisey will provide you with the info needed to identify and save a rare and valuable old coverlet from an ignominious fate (such as being cut up for teddy bears...) It will also provide you with the data you need to expand your collection with significant, early, or regional examples

Pretty pics, not much else.......2007-09-04
The book is lovely, but it could've been so much better if it had more desciptions of what you're looking at. Instead, it's full of little phrases that may be helpful, but they are also somewhat pithy. I wish I had purchased a couple of magazine subscriptions instead.
Informative and Inspirational.......2006-07-28
I love looking at House Beautiful books. I find the pictures to be inspirational. However, I usually don't think the text is very informative. I was pleasantly surprised to find House Beautiful 750 Designer Secrets to be an exception to the rule. It does contain beautiful photographs, but the "secrets" are useful and/or inspirational comments by designers. I have to admit I don't recognize the names of most of them, but I find the information to be consistent with other interior design/decoration books I have read. The quotes may not always be particulary earthshattering, but there were enough good ones to justify giving House Beautiful 750 Designer Secrets a 5. Out of 750 quotes you are bound to find something that is useful to you!
Now, just to give you a clear picture of what the book does and does not have to offer: no where is there a set of explicit instructions for how to incoporate the comments dirtectly to your home, but that is not the intention of the book. It is suppose to make you think for yourself how to add your own sense of style to your house. The book is set up so that there is a picture or two on a page and quotes by several different designers. The pictures illustrate the comments. I choose the following quotes because I thought that they are good advice and/or they made me rethink how I decorate my rooms.
"The most important thing is what you feel when you walk into a room." Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz
"Not interfering with views is decorating 101." Scott Salvator
"You don't need a lot of elements to create a dynamic effect." Jeffrey Marks
"Anchor a large room with a sense of symmetry." (quote from the author).
"I edit rigourously for scale, form, and color." Celeste Cooper
"Incorporate a common thread-such as a neutral color-to unify electric furnishings." Kelly Harmon
The one drawback to the book for some people might be that the pictures portray a similar style of decoration. If you like a mix of modern and antique, you will probably like the book, but those who like other styles, may or may not enjoy the pictures in the book. However, I think that the information given by the designers applies to any style.

Book Description
Pat Guthrie, author of The Architect's Portable Handbook, now turns his attention to interior design. Like its predecessor, the book is organized in CSI MasterFormat, modified for the interior design profession. It covers initial planning and estimating through design and construction/installation. Included are materials and specifications checklists, quick references to applicable codes and standards, design data, and typical details. Examples show applications of techniques and procedures. This invaluable reference, like all titles in the Portable Handbook series, provides "the 20% of information needed 80% of the time."

Has great information, but print and graphics are extremely difficult to read.
excellent resource!.......2000-09-21
This book is an excellent resource for my entire class of graduate students. It has a wealth of information, and is easy to take along to sites, classes, etc. There are even pages for you to take notes on. It is organized well and easy to follow. You won't find everything you ever needed to know (and didn't need to know), but you will find essential and most-used codes guidelines and dimensions for interior space.

Great First Design Book For Students.......2000-07-04
I really enjoyed this book. It's filled with wonderful designs and pictures that compliment the subject being discussed. It's a great book for beginning students to help them understand the essentials of the business without being so overwhelming.
06/20/00.......2000-06-20
This book should not be called "A Handbook for Interior Designers, it should be called "Interior Design 101". This book is a very basic crash course in principles of interior design. I would not recommend this book to anyone who has any background in interior design.
A must - get it!.......2000-01-24
I loved this book. It is basic yet wonderful. Easy to read. Will give you knowledge and tools to make your own propositions. I really enjoyed it.

One of the best books on the topic I've read. The author clearly explains major design principles, teaches you how to apply them, and then encourages individuality and innovation in designing your own home. I've read many decorating books and this is one of the best.

A very useful book to invest in.......2001-03-23
I bought this book in speculation. I have in the past bought many curtain books and found them not particularly helpful. After reading this book, I went straight onto their website and ordered other books that they have written.
This is probably going to be the best book on Curtains that you will ever buy and thoroughly recommend it.
A very Beautiful Curtain Book.......2000-09-19
The Pictures and Designs are the very latest, some of them do not even require sewing. My husband, whom is a Curtain Track Installer for more than 10 years; whom had installed curtain in more than 1000 homes also feel that the Designs that Catherine drew in this book are not only simple but nice. We are all very impressed by the up-to-date, mostly Simple designs which are very appealing to customers of the young generation. We will recommend our Customers to take these Unique Patterns. We intend to order one more book and cut them as Samples for us to bring round to show our Potential Customers. Thank you Catherine Merrick. Fm: Felis, e-mail: thechua@pacific.net.sg
