5 out of 5 stars Forget the rest.......2007-05-02

I love this book. It does not go too deeply into any particular subject but covers horse care and riding in general very well. There are hundred of books out there for beginners to intermediate riders, but this is my best general reference book.

It even has snippets for the more advanced rider. I really think this book is a very valuable addition to any horse lovers Library.

5 out of 5 stars So good that I bought two........2006-08-19

As it's not possible to 'see' a few pages of the inside of this book on Amazon, and I'm always sceptical about buying books online that I don't know and can't page through, after some searching, I found it at the DK website and looked through it there. I liked what I saw and then bought if from Amazon.

The photos are fantastic. Although the book is rather thick, it is very well organized and encapsulated with a new subject or further drill down every two pages. I covers everything from anatomy, to behavior, to harmony, to drills, to troubleshooting, and goals in building a solid relationship between horse and rider in all English riding disciplines.

If you're into jumping, especially, it's fantastic, because it covers, in great detail, distances between fences from trot and canter for training, gymnastics, and courses. It gives lots of exercises and drills. There are great overviews and tips for both competing and training. I have not come across any books that have this level of detail here.

The dressage explanations give you good basics but leave you hanging a bit for more.

It's like having great instruction from a master. The author's British, however, and Western riding is not covered at all as it's not as popular in Europe as English.

I give riding lessons. One of my students is moving back to the States, so I bought if for her as a going-away present. I liked it so much that I bought another copy for myself. It's a great reference tool and worth having on your shelf. I'm definitely going to use a lot of information in it during my own workouts and lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed, easy to read and understand.......2006-08-03

I'm relatively new to riding because I have only a few years of experience without too intensive training. Up to now I have read the first 70 pages of the book only but my first impression is rather good. Its language is clear, the book is well organized into small chapters and contains good illustrations. I have already learnt several interesting things that were new to me e.g. how to learn jumping progressively or how to build strong relationship with horses. I will try to put these things into practice.

5 out of 5 stars the best riding manual out there.......2006-07-09

This is a great book for all types of riders, it correctly covers beginners work, dressage, tack, cantering and jumping etc. instuctional guides cover everthing from correct postioning on the saddle to correct jumping signals to placement on the saddle. there could be more here on horse breeds, driving carriages and coaches but a great book that is carefully instructional and complete when it comes to riding technique.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous!.......2005-03-22

I have a substantial library of equestrian-related books, and this one certainly deserves pride of place. It is the best and most complete general guide to horse riding I've yet come across. The photographs are gorgeous and the production values superb. William Micklem writes very well and his explanations are very clear and thorough without being dry or pedantic. This really is about how to get the most out of riding, pure and simple. It isn't one of those ordinary, "how-to-groom-your-horse-compendium-of-breeds" picture books, and it delves into dressage, show jumping and cross-country in three separate but interlinked sections. I actually learned quite a few things reading this book. Experienced and beginner riders alike will enjoy it. Read it cover-to-cover, and savour the beatiful layout and illustrations. Completely awesome and highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good book for someone looking for a broad range of info.......2007-09-20

A lot of information in this book. It covers just about everything. I was hoping for a little more information on feeding, but overall a good buy. One note: if you are looking for tack and riding info, this book focuses mostly on english riding. There is very little reference to western riding.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book on horses.......2007-01-12

I bought this book for my daughter who just loves horses. She really enjoys having me read it to her and looking at the pictures. It is a good general reference book for people wanting to learn more about horses.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Start.......2007-01-03

I found this book to be quite interesting, I bought it as a gift for a friend who is just getting in to horses, and looked it over before giving it. Although most of it is basic, it is not condescending towards the reader, and has many interesting facts. I even learned a few things, and have been a horse person for over 17 years. The photo's chosen to accompany the work are usually helpful, and overall this is an excellent book for someone getting started with horses.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for new riders.......2005-12-16

This is a great book for first learning about horses, how to care for them, feeding, symptoms of illnesses, and it's simple to read and understand. It gives the basics for people who might want to own a horse for the first time so that you can know what to watch out for and take the best care of your horse. I'd recommend this book for first time horse owners, and for people working with horses for the first time. It's comprehensive and gives you a lot of great info.

5 out of 5 stars 1 of the best out of the rest!.......2005-03-31

This horse book was awesome! I will be taking riding lessons this summer and this book helped me get a head start on horse care, like grooming, feed, tack and much, much more! It's a great book for any horse lover even if you don't have or ride a horse. This book makes it a fun, simple way to learn about how to take care of a horse! This is one of my favorite horse care guides out of all of them!

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!.......1999-06-30

I loved this book! I have read it at least 5 times now, and pick it up all the time to read about something I dont understand from my riding lesson. It has soooooo much information, and fantastic pictures. You DO NOT have to be a beginner to read this fantastic book, but if you are, it's perfect. The only thing I didnt like, was how it didnt really say much about Western riding, but that's the British for ya!

2 out of 5 stars Great for those who are either perfect, or have ADD.......1999-06-29

Great pictures, I'll give it that. However, I felt the book was assuming too much, especially for the beginning rider. Great ideas, but not much instruction to back the pictures up. If you really progressed as fast as the pictures without professional help, kudos to you. Otherwise, not realistic. Common faults illustrated will continue without someone else (ie a trained professional) to back you up.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!.......1999-06-15

This book is great for beginner to advanced! I learned a lot from it. I recomend it to everyone!!!

How about some new information? And lately, it seems like this collection is nothing more than the same as last year, with a few pages of what's popular this year added in. Where's a comprehensive book?

4 out of 5 stars a nice book for the money.......2007-05-10

to be honest the book is filled with wonderful color pictures and descriptions of the watches.this is a good book to have for reference. I do perfer wristwatch annual as they include the prices. but for the money tis is a good book for someone who either collects or appreciates fine watches. a very nice overview

3 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, but with glaring omissions..........2007-03-10

This book is a very comprehensive volume of today's finest watch brands and timepieces. There are at least two major brand omissions, including my favorite watch brand, Omega.

There is not a single mention of Omega or Blancpain in the entire book. This leads me to believe that the book is really a pay to play advertising vehicle and these brands either chose not to participate or were intentionally left out. For me, with Omega missing, the book became a disappointment.

      Book Description

Each of the extraordinary hand-crocheted afghans displayed here in magnificent photos is a blue-ribbon winner. They've all taken the top prize at one of America's state fairs-the prime public venue for showing off the best of our nation's traditional crafts. The styles, colors, and patterns are as varied as the folks who fashioned them, ranging from an afghan with an elegant white-on-white country design to one that has a wildly kaleidoscopic motif. Crocheters can recreate these wonderful items at home, thanks to patterns, detail shots, and instructions, and experience the charm that makes the state fair such a special part of American culture. Scattered throughout the text are fun facts about the fairs, along with new and vintage photos.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Afghans!.......2007-05-16

I ordered this book only after looking though it throughly. It does repeat the directions for a couple of afghans, however they look different because they are in different configurations. If you are an adventurous beginner, then it's very possible that seeing there are different methods of doing the same thing and getting very different results will encourage you to try branching out on your own. Personally I love it! I love the cowboy afghan, I made it for my grandson and he loves it too. I'm working on the Sunbonnet Sue, which is the real reason I purchased it. I love to sew as well as crochet but quilting is an entirely different matter so to be able to make one of my favorite quilting patterns in crochet was wonderful for me.
The pictures and the state fair information took me back to my years in high school when I and the entire home ec class had to entire our projects in the fair. It's a lovely book, I have enjoyed it very much and I'm even thinking of entering my work in the fair again. :) I would love to get a blue ribbon!

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2007-04-11

This book is really one of the best i have seen on afghans! Great pictures and clear instructions. So many great patterns to choose from. Tons of great info on state fairs and rural life. I just love this one. I bought one for my sister and am buying one for myself. A must see!

2 out of 5 stars IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH CREATIVITY TO WIN A BLUE RIBBON.......2007-02-22

I haven't made any of the afghans in this book yet, but I've read through most of the patterns pretty thouroughly, and I'm an experienced crocheter, so I think I can review it without having actually made an afghan from it.

First off, it's a very pretty book - heavy stock paper, afghans photographed very nicely, lots of State Fair pictures sprinkled throughout the pattern section. The first 21 pages of the book is a historical write-up of State Fairs in general. I only bought the book for the afghan patterns, and I don't have much interest in State Fairs, so I haven't read that section. Other reviewers have said it's nice, so I'll take their word for it.

So.... on to the patterns themselves. In a very generous count, there are 45 patterns in the book. But actually, it's less than that because some patterns are repeated. For instance, on pages 48-49 we have the South Carolina blue ribbon winner, a baby-blue afghan titled "Sweet Hearts". Then the next afghan on pages 50-51 is the Florida winner, a peach-colored version of the exact same afghan, again titled "Sweet Hearts". Here's the author's comment at the top of page 50, above the verbatim repeat of the instructions from the previous afghan - "Some designs are so wonderful that they deserve more than one blue ribbon". Maybe the design deserves more than one blue ribbon, but it doesn't deserve to be shown twice in the same pattern book with a repeat of the instructions. Another example is pages 58-59, which shows the Arkansas winner "Baby ABC's Afghan", followed pages 60-61, the South Carolina winner of the exact same pattern. Different colors again, but the exact instructions printed/reprinted for each one.

While there are some interesting designs in the book, there are also a number of very basic afghans - several very similar versions of granny squares, several versions of just the standard ripple stitch. There must not have been a lot of competition in Nebraska, because the blue ribbon winner was a simple, single crochet ripple stitch, all in one color. And this simplest of simple afghans is labeled "Original Design", as if this were a brand new thing that someone just thought up. I'm sure it was made really well, but it hardly qualifies as "Original".

Which brings me to another disappointment - There are a few afghans labeled "Original Design" (some that deserve it, some that don't), but most of the patterns are from previously published sources, and are labeled "Pattern courtesy of ....." (fill in the blank with Coats&Clark, Leisure Arts, Annie's Attic, etc.), which means that if you have a good collection of afghan patterns already, you won't see much in this book that's new. I'll admit that I have a LOT of afghan books, more than what we might call "normal people", so maybe this bothers me more than it would others.

I suppose this has to do with copyright issues, but the "courtesy of" patterns are printed exactly as they were originally published, with no alterations for how the pictured afghan was actually made. At the end of the pattern, there might be something like this from p.79 - "She used an original edging rather than the fringe called for in the instructions" - but there aren't any instructions for the edging she actually used. Or this from p. 84 - "She altered some of the cross-stitch blocks" - but no charts for the designs in the picture.

So overall, if you're looking for a beautifully designed book as a gift for someone, or if you don't already have a collection of afghan patterns, this might be a good choice for you. But if you're looking for something new and interesting, you won't find much of it here.

3 out of 5 stars Pictures doesn't do it justice.......2007-03-22

There are some really lovely afghans in this book including lovely throws for babies and children, and even patterns for men. However, the photos let this book down, as the afghans are often pictured scrunched up or folded, not allowing the designs to be clearly seen.
The instructions are clear and there is an illustrated stitch guide in the front of the book for newbies.
This book has a collection of 42 afghans, 10 of which are for baby, 1 is a baby car seat cover. The book is divided up into the following chapters; soft and gentle, country charm, bright and festive, sophisticated elegance, warm & cozy and masculine comfort.

      2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-01-25

Was excited to see this book and was impressed with many of the designs. However, when I actually started a project that I really wanted to make, I found serious errors in the instructions. The instructions had an incorrect number of base chain stitches, incorrect stitches cited in the pattern, and a special stitch that was not referenced in the instruction but was crucial to the pattern. I have not tried the other patterns but was forced to rewrite the instructions to complete this one. I can only hope the others were better edited.

5 out of 5 stars great afghans, new stitch ideas.......2005-06-01

This book has a good number of great afghans I plan to make. There are many pattern "creators" in this book (they are not all patterns by Donna Kooler) which makes for a great variation of styles and stitches. Up until now I have only made afghans from the Leisure Arts books, and this one has some refreshing new stitches and pattern ideas (including the cover item). I was anxious to start one from this book simply for the challenge! It does have different abbreviations than Leisure Arts uses, which threw me off a little at first, but are easy to adjust to. Baby afghans included.

This book turned me onto to the "art" of crochet. The patterns are absolutely gorgeous. If you're looking for crochet that is not cheesy, look no further. This book is the ultimate. I was a knitting enthusiast only until I discovered this book. If you love beauty, you're in for a real treat!

      Product Description

Have you ever completed an afghan and thought there was just something missing? It was really pretty but...well, it seemed to need something else and it wasn't fringe! What that afghan probably needed was a border. And this book by Jean Leinhauser gives you 50 of them, which can be added to just about any afghan, whether it's knitted or crocheted, to provide the finishing touch. Some of the borders are wide and ruffled, some are narrow and tailored. Others are very feminine, some are more masculine. All of them are fun to work and will turn the plainest afghan into something very special. Stapled; 32 pages.

4 out of 5 stars Very workable patterns.......2007-03-09

The book has full color pictures and good stitch counts for all the borders. I give it only 4 stars because many of the borders come without designed corners, a bit of a problem if you want them for an afghan. That said, they generally have short repeats, which should allow for fudging when necessary (you can always stitch in the joining slip stitch for +1 or skip the starting chain for a -1). Most of the designs are quite pretty and are different from those in standard edging books.

5 out of 5 stars Great collectioon of borders.......2007-02-12

I have a lot of knitting and crochet books. Usually borders are incorporated into an overall pattern. This book is really useful since you can apply any border to any knit/crochet (or even woven) item of your choice.
I had seen this once , did not get it, and then hunted high and low until I found it on Amazon using the search feature. Really reasonable price for some wonderful and timeless crochet borders.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth buying! .......2006-11-10

This book is perfect for any one who crochets afghans. One can turn an afghan from "blah" to "extra special" with the borders to choose from in this book. Not only can the these patterns be used for afghans, but adjusting yarn and hook size will turn out beautiful trim for other projects as well as decorative shelf edgings! Don't let the book's title fool you, there are more uses for these "borders" than afghans alone!
