Gina Spadafori, Universal Press Syndicate pet care columnist and host of AOL's "Gina Spadafori's Pet Connection," follows her educational and entertaining book Dogs for Dummies with Cats for Dummies, which she co-authors with Paul Pion, D.V.M., D.A.C.V.I.M., president of the Veterinary Information Network.
If you own a cat or are considering cat ownership, Cats for Dummies is the one book you really must have. This educational, comprehensive, and entertaining book is probably the closest you'll get to a cat "owners' manual."
Beginning with a foreword by Lilian Jackson Braun, the cat-owned author of The Cat Who... mystery novels, the book quickly moves into a brief history of cats, cat psychology, and their recent amazing growth in popularity.
Spadafori and Pion spend a considerable amount of time on the selection of a cat breed. While size and in-bred behaviors don't vary in cats as much as they do in dogs, different breeds of cats do have distinctive traits and temperaments that should be considered when deciding on a purebred animal. Physical characteristics, such as coat type, should also be considered. Some cats require a great deal more grooming than others do. The authors are frank in their discussion of the fate of poorly chosen cats who wind up in shelters because they were too much work and not right for the person who had selected them.
For readers considering a purebred cat, Spadafori and Pion provide tips and resources, including magazines, Web sites and Cat Fanciers Association breed clubs. They also give information on screening breeders to weed out the "truly evil" and the simply ignorant. They strongly encourage adoption of shelter cats, though, pointing out that many of these animals are young, healthy, and affectionate and may have been given up through no fault of their own. Adult shelter cats, Spadafori says, can be a particularly good choice, especially for an older person, since they are past their kitten craziness. Because the adoption rates for adult cats are lower than for kittens, thousands of wonderful animals who would make great pets are euthanized each year.
Spadafori recommends proceeding with caution when shopping pet stores for kittens due to the high percentage of pet store kittens that come from kitten mills where animals are bred indiscriminately and often kept in horrifying conditions. And while some pet stores offer space to sell "oops" litters, she believes the practice, while well-intentioned, sends the message that kittens are easy to place and encourages cat owners to continue allowing their pets to breed.
Once the breed or type of cat has been selected, Cat for Dummies moves on to cover aspects of cat ownership, including kitten-proofing your house, bringing home a new cat or kitten, care, feeding and grooming, and veterinary care. The chapter on medical care and common illnesses is particularly strong, spending much more time on the subject than in Dogs for Dummies, due, most likely, to the fact that the co-author is a veterinarian. This section provides important information without excruciating clinical detail that might lose the reader and is a great addition to the book.
As in Dogs for Dummies, Spadafori includes the entertaining "Part of Tens" section in which she debunks 10 common cat myths, offers 10 things the cat owner needs to do to be prepared for a disaster, suggests 10 sets of questions to ask when choosing a kitten, lists 10 household dangers to cats, and provides 10 cat-related sites on the World Wide Web. Also included is "Ten of the best things ever said about cats." This book is highly recommended for anyone who is owned by a cat or aspires to be.

Cats for Dummies.......2007-09-20
This is a valuable source of information for first time cat owners as well as long time lovers of the furry ones! We knew practically nothing about caring for kitties and now feel that we are enlightened and well informed.
Cats for Dummies.......2007-07-24
Item was in good condition with a crease in the cover that was not noted in its description. Otherwise, the book was great.
Important Missing Pieces!.......2007-02-12
I'm not a cat lover - I just love our cats. We went to the shelter to pick up one (selected a female kitten), and upon noticing a "two-for-one" weekend, decided to get a second (male kitten - turned out to be the more affectionate and venturesome one). That was an incredibly correct major act - the two keep each other entertained far better than my wife and/or I could. "Cats for Dummies" also recommends having two cats, but buried in the middle of the book it doesn't communicate the importance of this decision.
As for toys, "Cats for Dummies" is absolutely right - their favorite toys are the plastic rings from milk bottles and baby food jars; further, they never tire of a new set of rabbit-fur-covered brightly colored "mice."
However, early in our indoor cats' lives it became apparent that they were getting a bit bored, looking more than a bit longingly outside, and wanting to climb the $600 drapes. So, under the guise of "enrichment," we let them out. It took awhile, but now it is by far their favorite activity, and they no longer threaten the drapes, etc. However, one has to be very careful - a hawk and three coyotes have taken an interest in our house (and cats), so we have to be on the look-out and spend much time outside with them. Getting them back in, of course, is a bit of a challenge - this is impossible with less than an hour outside, and only accomplished (with some difficulty) after that by immediately feeding them baby food. Night-time outside play is an absolute no-no! (None of this good information is in "Cats for Dummies.")
Finally, while both cats love tree-climbing, neither knows that the best way to come down is tail-first. This has led to a few crashes - anyone know how to teach them this? And as for "wildness," the neighbor's Bengal cat is beyond belief - much more athletic and adventuresome than regular cats (contrary to what "Cats for Dummies" seems to say) - unfortunately, the coyotes got it.

Package came in a timely manner with no defects...great price, too!
If only cats followed the book--.......2005-06-03
If you're new to the animal, this reference book is certainly a start. And it's curiously complete in unexpected areas, such as what to do about those feral cats who show up in your garage, pull at your heartstrings, and become semi-permanent boarders.
But the book is frustratingly incomplete in other areas. When Emmy's belly started drooping to the floor, swaying awkwardly with every step, my son and daughter insisted I take her to a vet for diagnosis and, at the very least, some cosmetic surgery. Nothing about this condition in the book (I even looked under "tummy tucks"). The vet assured me that it was a perfectly "normal" condition, especially in spayed domestic female short-hairs, and that surgery of any sort would be contra-indicated. Is this information too much for a "dummy" reader of this book to expect to find?
The same goes for a condition, variously referred to by vets as "excessive, or obsessive, grooming," "self-mutilation," and "psychogenic licking." When Emmy started tearing her hair out, I did the same trying to pull some enlightenment out of this book (this time I even looked under "baldness"). Again, the authors offered nothing on a condition so common my vet was able to hand me several fliers about it.
Finally, the authors certainly haven't met my cat or they wouldn't be so sanguine about the prospects of getting a pill down such a creature. They neglect to say that medications such as Prozac, Valium, and amitryptyline are now available in transdermal form (that's for the cat, not the owner).
Emmy is once again beginning to look like a felicitous furry feline, but no thanks to this book.

Kittens for dummies.......2007-06-27
I enjoy reading this book. It is full of usefull information, and fun and easy to read.
Why can't human babies come with one of these??.......2006-09-14
Kittens for Dummies is quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. I'm glad I didn't get a copy from the library because the overdue fines would have bankrupted me!!!
Growing up, my mom was a breeder and I've had cats ever since. About 1.5 yrs ago,my son decided that he wanted a dog or cat that would be 'his' and sleep upstairs with him. We were at Petsmart and there was an adoption event. He saw a 7 mos old black kiten named Scamp. He wanted to take him home immediately, but had to talk to Daddy, who at 43 and never having an indoor pet had graciously allowed the adoption of a cat and a rather large dog. He agreed and during the week that we waited to adopt Scamp, I went looking for a book that would explain to my son all about kittens and what kinds of things they needed. I found very few children's books that covered the kinds of info I wanted. On the shelf next to it was Kittens For Dummies. It had all kinds of information in it, and happened to have a sticker on the front that said "Autographed Copy". I thought that was neat and that it had been so long since I'd had kittens that it wouldn't hurt for me to brush up on my own kitten care knowledge. I read the book cover to cover, like a novel. I couldn't put it down. For the interesting, pertinent and especially funny parts, I read it aloud to my husband and son while we drove from place to place that week. I suspect they had most of the book read to them. When I got to the part about orphan kittens, I was very interested. I had only one child, and we could not have any more. The thought came that maybe I could use some of the 'baby crazies' to take care of baby cats that didn't have mothers and more. I talked to my husband and to the people at the rescue group when we picked up Scamp, and while they said they didn't get a lot of bottle babies, they didn't have many people that could care for them and they would definitely call me. They called a week later. I got a box with a couple of towels, a bottle, a brush, an can of formula and I was a new mom! THANK GOD for Dusty's book. That kitten had a number of problems, but I was prepared for almost every single one, thanks to the book. I learned the signs to watch for when he would get sick, times he needed medicine or special care, how to determine what age he was, and what milestones he would or should have reached. Since then, I've been a foster mom to many more kittens. I catapulted from 'newbie foster parent' to 'expert kitten foster'. When the group had a kitten that a lot of supervision or that was very medically fragile they brought them to me. I had a lot of help from the more experienced rescuers in our group and from friends online, but more often than not, they reminded me of something I'd read in Kittens for Dummies. I had the privilege of meeting Dusty and Weems, and found out something really neat about the book -- All of the pictures except the show kitties and the one on the cover are ALL orphan kittens raised in their home. That's a LOT of happy and healthy kittens!! The book has something for everyone that has or will have a kitten or cat in their life. A lot of the information I've used for full-grown cats as well as kittens - because the information is so thoroughly presented. I have places that the book will fall open to on it's own because it's been in that place so many times -- I use the age chart often to try to figure out what age a kitten that has been brought to me might be. A normal, healthy, indoor kitten can be estimated by weight, but in rescue, very rarely are the kittens we get normal, healthy indoor kittens until we help them become that. Rescue can be hard work - especially when you lose one of the kittens. Dusty even covers that possibility in her book. That's not something we all want to think about, but it's an important thing to consider, since everyone experiences the death of a pet differerntly. Having lost my own cat of 10 years recently, I ever found myself popping my book open, once again, to check out the web address for petloss.com. I hope if you have or are going to get a kitten (or a cat) that you will get this book. I don't know what I would have done without it!
A fast and easy read.......2006-08-21
One thing I like about the "for Dummies" format is their layout which makes information easy to find and quick to digest. In "Kittens for Dummies," the author, whose name I recognized from numerous cat articles in magazines like "Cat Fancy", writes from twenty years of experience in rescuing orphaned kittens. She gives a fair, two-sided argument (pros and cons both) about buying pedigreed kittens and dealing with reputable breeders. In particular, the sections on behavior problems and health issues were useful and up to date. Like other "for Dummies" books, the author filtered in plenty of humor. As a teacher, I've always found that humor helps make information easier to learn and remember. While the book doesn't contain information regarding obscure illnesses--by being obscure the disease isn't a likely event. That's what veterinarians are for besides.
Overal, I found the book to be a useful, enjoyable, and easy to read guide. A definite must for first time kitten owners.
An Invaluable Resource.......2006-08-14
Being involved in rescue, I find this book to be an invaluable resource. Sometimes I use it like an encyclopedia and look up information that I don't know or might have forgotten. I've also referred countless people to this book when they've adopted a kitten. Kittens are cute and people are drawn to them but most find that they're not as easy to care for as they'd thought. "For Dummies"? Maybe. But also for people who are smart enough to know they need help. If kittens came with an owner's manual, this book would be it.
Great Guide for Rescuers and Kitten Owners!.......2006-08-13
As both a rescuer and a breeder, I have found this book to be an easy-to-read and indispensable guide for fosterers and owners of kittens - so much so that I have started giving a copy of this book to all of my kitten buyers when they come to pick up their new baby! I have gotten much positive feedback from my kitten buyers, who have said that the book has been especially helpful to them in introducing their kitten to its new home, and in understanding the needs of their new family member. But this book is especially valuable to fosterers who have to take the place of a four-footed mom in raising at-risk orphans, and I am certain that this book's information on raising orphaned kittens has helped to save many a newborn life.

Book Description
The interest in old electric fans has skyrocketed in the last five years. In 1994, an 1887 Crocker/Curtis fan brought $12,000 at an auction; several fans have since sold for over $15,000! Antiques dealers, auctioneers, and collectors from all over the country have been unable to find information on these fans - there has been no price guide available. Plus there are many reproductions on the market that are worthless and confusing to the collector. This book is the answer to the great demand for an accurate and complete resource for dating and pricing electric fans. Each of the 330 fans in this well-researched book is dated, sized, and given a thorough range of prices based on six categories of condition. Plus there are dozens of intriguing illustrations, catalog ads, and historical information for various companies. 2001 values. AUTHORBIO: John Witt is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up loving old electric fans. He began collecting when he was ten years old. He casually collected fans until around the age of 25 and became a member of the American Fan Collectors Association. In 1991 he published his first book on electric desk fans and has written several articles on the subject for several antique journals. He is a librarian by trade and a graduate of four universities. REVIEW: This book is a guide of general information concerning desk fans. It does not cover ceiling or non-mechanical fans. It is designed to establish some parameters within the field of desk fan collecting. Fan type, size of blades, date, company, and collector value are given for each fan shown.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2003-01-29
Don't buy this book expecting to learn all about fan collecting. There is virtually no introductory information other than how old fans are graded. Lot's of detail about certain brands (Westinghouse, Emerson and GE) but not much on other manufacturers. Also, level of detail very inconsistent - almost seems like pages are missing. Little black and white photos also leave a lot to be desired. Probably a good reference to have, but didn't really fit my need.
VERY VERY USEFUL FOR THE COLLECTOR!.......2002-12-31
This is a very good book, you will never find all you need in one place, but this is a good start -- Black and White pictures -- no big deal cuz most old fans were all black anyway!
Highly recommended
