Great reference!.......2007-09-04
I love learning new things about my dogs, and this book taught me a lot!
Superlative study of canine body language!.......2007-07-28
We rescued an abused Great Dane puppy 3-4 months ago. She had been mistreated by 2 females in her short 6 month life, so she hated women. Within a month, I had been to the local ER twice with dog bites(not puppy mouthing, but snarl/lunge/attack bites). A behaviorist recommended this book as a way to identify the triggers and expressions that would tell me that the pup's very low fear aggression threshold was about to be crossed. With knowledge from this book along with many exercises and activities, the pup, now 85 lbs. is starting to calm down. This book has probably saved her life as we had to get her volatile and frenzied behaviors under control before she gained another 50 lbs.
A must read for all dog owners. Now we feel sad about how previous pups had communicated with us, and we were too dumb to catch the messages they were sending!
This book is very helpful!.......2007-05-28
I've had dogs all my life, but haven't actually studied them until recently. I find my old interpretations of dog communication were very human-biased. This book is very illuminating on how dogs really communicate. The author communicates the subject using excellent photos and photo sequences, which is such a help! I generally find text descriptions inadequate and even videos are difficult, because the sequences go by so fast. I think sometimes the author overdoes the interpretation, but as I gain expertise I may revise that comment. This is a great book and is one of my primary references.
Very useful book.......2007-05-28
I, and everyone I've shown it to, have found this book very educational. I thought I'd just use it as a reference, looking up specific body language as needed (which is a very good use for it), but I find myself reading it cover to cover because it's so fascinating. I've had dogs all my life, and trained them and loved them, but I can't believe how ignorant I was about their body language. As I read the book I see these behaviors in my dog and wonder how I could have been so unobservant. I think even folks who know a lot about dogs and training can learn some things from this. I plan to buy more to use as gifts.
Best Book For Understanding Dog Body Language.......2007-05-28
I volunteer at a shelter and am fascinated by temperment testing. While I have the benefit of watching a wonderful temperment tester each week, reading this book has been an incredible education. Now when I watch dogs tested, I can see what our tester is seeing... the freezing, the whale eye, the stress behaviors, and so on. I'm learning to better judge how a given dog reacts to other dogs or to cats.
For me, the benefits include being better able to know how to handle the dogs because I can better judge their personalities and shape my behavior to them, know how the dogs I handle are reacting to various stimuli, and be able to tell perspective adopters more about the dogs than I previously could.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who either works with dogs or owns a dog. You can't go wrong. The photos are so clear and the writing so easily understandable, that everyone can absorb the information. Be warned though... you'll want to read this book over and over and over again until the pages are well worn. It's just THAT good!
Book Description
In the Hellenistic period, the Greek world enjoyed great prosperity after Alexander the Great's conquest of the Persian Empire made vast resources of gold available for the first time. The various royal courts of Alexander's successors, including the Ptolemies in Egypt, comprised a wealthy
clientele with a taste for luxury.
The group of gold jewelry discussed here-including earrings, finger rings, bracelets, beads, and a hairnet-consists of seventeen spectacular pieces from the Getty Museum. The author takes us on a journey through three centuries, beginning about B.C. 350, from the empire-building Alexander to
the beguilingly ambitious Kleopatra VII. This sweep through the turbulent history of the eastern Mediterranean gives a picture of the Greek-Egyptian blending of religion and art. The author demonstrates how the symbolism of dynastic power plays a central role in the interpretation of each object and
in understanding the assemblage as a whole. Discussing their style, iconography, and craftsmanship, he convincingly places the jewelry in late third-century-B.C. Ptolemaic Egypt and argues for the original owner's royal connections.

Book Description
The miniaturist art of gem engraving is the least familiar of the major arts of ancient Greece, yet we know it to have been practiced by the greatest artists. This book presents a comprehensive account of the art in Greek lands from the early Bronze Age down to the Hellenistic period. The gems are related to history and to the artistic achievements in other media of their day, and the subject matter of the scenes engraved upon them is examined and found to hold much that will be new to students of Greek myth and iconography. The development of the Bronze Age studios in the Minoan and Mycenaean world is discussed, and the works of the great period of Classical gem engraving are resolved into their styles and schools, with a special chapter devoted to Greek works within the Persian Empire. The attributions and discussion are supported by full notes and lists. The plates, which show the gems enlarged up to four times their natural size, present the fullest possible range of devices and styles from all periods. This revised edition will be an essential work of reference for students and scholars, as well as a thorough survey of the subject for all lovers of Greek art. 1395 illustrations, 51 in color.

Bargain Price on a Beautiful Book.......2006-02-26
Boardman's book is great for looking at Bronze Age, early and classical Greek Gems, but only spends a few pages on Hellenistic Gems and lumps them together with Roman, which was a bit disappointing. Other than that, a beautiful book, almost a complete corpus of gems from the noted period. Very useful.

Greek Gold.......2000-11-28
This book is great. It shows detailed photographs of many pieces, and the text describes the methods of construction. There is a section showing the tools they used to manufacture the jewelry, and the way the tools were used.

Customer Reviews:
No prior familiarity with the series is required to make this a fun, inviting read........2007-10-07
ary Pope Osborne's MONDAYS WITH A MAD GENIUS offers #38 in the 'Magic Tree House: A Merlin Mission' series. Here a mysterious message from Morgan le Fay, magical librarian of Camelot, involves two children the key to helping magician Merlin discovery joy in his life again. First they must journey to the magic tree house for 1500s Italy, and meet Leonardo da Vinci no prior familiarity with the series is required to make this a fun, inviting read.
Another great story in the series.......2007-10-02
My 8-year-old son is a huge fan of Magic Tree House, and this latest book was just as interesting and fun to read as all the other books. This time, Jack and Annie meet Leonardo Da Vinci in old Italy on their mission to find the secret to happiness. Again, Osborne spins historical information into a tale of magic and wonder, which is fun to read for children and are educational just the same. The plot is a bit more simple this time, and it is somewhat lacking the magic that "Christmas in Camelot" and "Summer of the Sea Serpent," but is is well-developed and leaves the reader content - at least my son and I were.
Magic Treehouse books continue to inspire.......2007-10-01
This latest installment in the hugely successful Magic Treehouse series finds Jack and Annie traveling back in time to the Enlightenment period to spend a day helping Leonardo da Vinci. This third installment in the latest four book challenge has Jack and Annie seeking the true meanings of happiness. Once again, Mary Pope Osborne uses her brilliant technique to bring history alive and to explore philosophical ideas. In this story she describes every day life in the 16th century, discusses Leonardo's ideas and challenges in a way that makes him appear very human, and gives a wonderful story for the painting of the Mona Lisa. This is all written at a level my five-year old understands and my ten-year old still enjoys.
Great Education, Great Book, Too.......2007-09-28
My second grader loves this new Magic Tree House book! He read it twice the day he received it. He become so curious about Leonardo Da Vinci that he asked me about him so I dig out one of my art books about Da Vinci and showed him some of his most famous works. The next day he shared this book with his class in the morning sharing time and the class had a good discussion about Leonardo Da Vinci. I can't think of a better way to give a 7 year old such great education! I haven't read this book yet myself but I'm going to read it when his best friend returns it.
Great Book!.......2007-09-22
Great book - my kids love it (ages 7 & 8). This series of books is great!

Book Description
The summer of 2006 belonged to Russell Brand. It seemed as if the gangly motor-mouth, who resembled nothing so much as a Dickensian villain with a birdsnest on his head, was a sensation everywhere. From being the commentator on Big Brother to upstaging Jonathan Ross on the chat show king's own program, there was no escaping Russell's lewd, innuendo-laden humor. But Russell's career has been long and varied. In fact, it looked as if it was all over for him back in 2001 when he turned up for work at MTV the day after the September 11 attacks dressed as Osama Bin Laden. That he managed to make such an amazing comeback is testament to his outstanding abilities. Russell's personal life has been as wild and unconventional as his career and something that he draws freely upon for his comedy. He has talked openly about his former use of drugs and his sex life. It's no wonder he's talked about as the brightest new star in the country. Find out all about the enigmatic Russell Brand, in this, the first biography.

Clarification.......1999-12-30
If the ENTIRE book wasn't about Emily's "sexuality" I wouldn't have been disappointed by the ending. Being a lesbian, I understand the fact that there are other aspects to a lesbian life. However, if those aspects were going to be introduced, I felt they should have been in the book all along and not just at the end.
Wonderful..........1999-12-29
Well this has to be one of my favorite books ever. Some may say it was dissapointing at the end but I don't think those are the right words. Yes it would have been nice to know what became of Emily and her lover but the book did end nicely. Emily's best friend was an important part of the book and in my opinion the ending was appropriate.
This book was quite realistic compared to some books I've read about youth coming to terms with their homosexuality. It wasn't sugarcoated. Emily took a lot of heat for being a lesbian, and was very confused throughout the book. Her family did not accept her and every thing WASN'T okay. Emily went through A LOT. I shared her emotions while reading, Emily goes through so many ups & downs in this book and it all seems so real. I wish Emily was a real person so I could meet her.
The only thing that kinda threw me off was how fast the time set passed in this book. Years were skipped a lot & the second half of Emily's life seemed to speed right on by. But overall I have to give it the 5 stars it deserves.
"A Stone Gone Mad".......1999-11-25
The book captivated me in its depiction of what it is like growing up gay and all that come with it. its turthful.
Well Written But Disappointing.......1999-10-22
What an extremely well-written book. Ms. Park's expressions were captivating. My visualization of her descriptions were outstanding!
However... I was EXTREMELY troubled by the last, let's say, 25 pages... I watched as Emily suffered through one bad relationship after another, then she finally found "The One" and you hear nothing else about her... Fast Forward to 18 years later... What??
THEN... the end of the book had nothing to do at all about her struggle as a lesbian.. it became about her best friend. I don't get it...
Sorry, but I could only give this book a three.
Entertainment Better Than TV.......1999-10-13
This is just a great story. It caught my attention from beginning to end. It was poignant, heart warming and real. Anyone, gay or straight, can relate to this novel because it's all about being honest with oneself. Very few people can communicate this aspect of human nature as eloquently as the author of this novel.
