Many good recipes, now we know the secrets of the cafes. Sadly, some are no longer in business but fortunately live on in the book. The Snicker salad recipe is worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Showcases a diverse culinary wealth of recipes.......2003-05-17

Collaboratively compiled by Gwen McKee and Barbara Moseley, the Best Of The Best From Wisconsin Cookbook showcases a diverse culinary wealth of recipes drawn from dozens of Wisconsin-based cooks and cookbooks. Each individual recipe is identified as to which cookbook it originates from and are arranged in the usual categories of Appetizers and Beverages; Bread and Breakfast; Soups; Salads; Pasta & Rice; Seafood; Vegetables; Poultry; Meats; Cookies and Candies; Cakes; Pies and Desserts. In addition there is a list and a catalog of contributing cookbooks (which could easily serve as a reference resource for building up a Wisconsin oriented cookbook collection), as well as a "user friendly" Index. No personal or community library collection throughout the Badger State can be considered complete without the inclusion of Gwen McKee and Barbara Mosely's Best Of The Best From Wisconsin Cookbook.

4 out of 5 stars Recipes for cheese lovers.......2000-06-15

My wife actually prefers this cookbook to the Best of the Best of Minnesota, but then she's always liked cheese.

Stereotypes aside, this is another fine book in the Best of the Best series. We use the Wisconsin cookbook more than all the others. Of the recipes we have prepared, there has only been one so far that we didn't like.

It features the kind of brunches, dinners, and desserts that most people will find appealing, as well as some regional favorites.

Again, the book is two-color and features no photographs of the prepared items.

      Book Description

A Recipe for Success: Lizzie Kander and her Cookbook celebrates the life of Milwaukee’s early twentieth-century culinary wonder. This new addition to the Badger Biography series will introduce young readers to a remarkable young woman who made a difference in the lives of the early immigrants in Wisconsin. Kander originally created The Settlement Cookbook to assist young Jewish immigrant girls in cooking nutritious "American-style" meals for their families. Since its publication, several generations of household cooks have been raised on the delicious recipes of the cookbook. Proceeds from the sale of the original cookbook helped build Milwaukee’s first settlement house and later the city’s Jewish Community Center. The century-old cookbook is still in print today. This is a delightful biography, filled with humorous asides, wonderful period illustrations, and of course recipes!

                Book Description

This delightful guide divides the entire coast of California into specific marine habitats--sandy beaches, estuaries, bays, lagoons, and rocky intertidal zones. It then examines the unique features of each habitat, and identifies and describes the most common, conspicuous organisms that you are likely to find.

Unlike the first reviewer, I'm an amateur. Our family recently relocated to the Puget Sound region and have discovered the excitement of exploring the many tidal pools and beaches in the area.

We've purchased several field guides and although this one is not my favorite - it is large and has a limited number of high-quality color photographs - it is definitely a good book.

What it lacks in photos it more than makes up for in information - in a very easy to understand format. He introduces the region and explains the "whys" behind the geography, then moves into his very beneficial tips for successful beachcombing.

What I like most about the book, however, is that he goes into great detail about the different tidal zones and the particular creatures you will find in each zone.

This book is a little advanced for our needs right now, but as my children age, I am sure it will be a well-referenced guide.

                Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny!.......2003-05-15

This book is an outstanding guide to the marine life found along the shores of the Pacific Northwest. Before I go further, I should note that it is NOT a pocket guide. But if you slip it into a daypack, you will be amply rewarded. Dr. Niesen has written a book that in very clear language helps you identfy what you are looking at, learn about its life habits, and learn about its habitat. Its emphasis on habitats, and arrangement by type of organism within each habitat, is extremely helpful. The black and white photos are usually pretty good, although sometimes dark, but the section of color plates is really good. What are really outstanding are the line drawings--David Wood, the artist, really captures the organisms in a way that brings out details yet preserves the basic nature of the organism.

The book also gives a great (meaning clear yet not too simple) introduction to marine biology for the Pacific Northwest, explaining tides, currents, the origin of the coast , and the basic biology of the major groups (taxa) of organisms. Furthermore, he provides tips on beachcombing.

All in all, a very handy reference. I will consider it for my Marine Biology class for non-majors (I'd use it with a majors course, too, if I taught one!).

Although Amos Wood acknowledges the casual beachcomber as someone who decides to explore the hide tide line on a spontaneous Sunday afternoon, this book is written for the more serious seeker of odd objects that wash up on the Pacific shores. He explores basic techniques - where and how to look for items, clothing and gear necessities, the type of objects you're likely to find and which are valued most highly, safety concerns, and a breakdown of the coastal areas and their best beachcombing opportunities. This book not only covers the American west coast but includes the Marshall Islands, the Canadian coastline, Caroline Islands, and the Hawaiian Islands. He supplies roughly sketched line drawings of the strongest currents and how they hit the land. The black-and-white photographs give the book a dated feel, making it seem written much earlier than 1987. Still, the information is good and helpful for anyone wishing to embark on a serious beachcombing hobby.

                        5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING !.......2006-05-15

An outstanding book for a beginner or more experienced woodworker. I am truly impressed. I am a fairly experienced woodworker. I own many books on the subject. Glen Huey has produced a very fine book on period furniture.
Another very excellent book is Lonnie Bird's: "Period Furniture Details" I would reccomend buying both books.
This book is more step by step and informative than many. There are five main projects:1.block front chest 2.Massachusetts high chest{high boy}3.Pennsylvania chest on chest 4.Pennsylvania tall case clock 5.New England desk and bookcase{secretary} All projects are thorougly covered with step by step construction instructions. The book is easy to use in the shop with its spiral binding. There is an accompanying D.V.D That is by itself worth the price of the book! Every project has full cut lists and sources for specialty hardware. The D.V.D {82 minutes} has detailed demonstrations on: making cabriole legs, stickered miters, dye finishing, ogee feet and more. There are printable full size patterns for all curved or special parts for all projects on the D.V.D. [One negative the book like many is printed in China and in my opinion the picture and printing are not as good as many others] If you want to build one of these period pieces this is the book for you,you can do it!

This new paperback expands on the techniques covered in Shaping Wood — a title in the enormously successful Complete Illustrated Guides series. It covers joinery relating to 18th century furniture styles, as well as the demanding techniques required to complete ornate period pieces. Turning and carving, as well as building accurately, are all included in a highly visual format. Anyone who loves period details and longs to create them will want this book. 300 color photos and drawings are featured.

                        5 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2006-05-16

I am surprised at the low book review. This is one of the best teaching books I have read. Lonnie Bird is an artist at conveying woodworking concepts. This is not a step by step how to guide to a completed project. Every detail that is covered is very well covered. I have both of the Lonnie Bird books and believe they complement each other. I highly reccomend this book and this author! If you want a good step by step book on Period Furniture try: Glen Huey's "Building Period Furniture" Both of these books are excellent. See my review under this book on Amazon.I have bought many books that are barely worth taking home. These two books are worth more than they cost! The printing and pictures in This book are superior as are all others I have read by Taunton press.

4 out of 5 stars Details Add Value.......2004-07-10

This is a valuable aid in making details. Another reviewer states that 80% of the book is in another book by Bird. This might be a bit of an over statement - no matter if just 20% is new material the book is worth it. I own both of the books he addresses - I noticed the duplication right away. The real question is "will this book make you a better period furniture maker?" I am 57 years old - own every tool required to make period furiture - hold a Masters certification from Marc Adams School of Woodworking - have taken course work with some of the top people in the field - I am now working on a Philidelphia Low Boy and am wooking with Allan Breed (instructor) - and this book is helpful and even insightful. I know at least four of the eighteen of us in class have purchased this book.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you own Complete Guide to Shaping Wood.......2004-02-28

If you already own Lonnie Bird's Complete Illustrated Guide to Shaping Wood you will be extremely disappointed with this book. It seemed that 80% was duplicate material. The book descriptions says that this book expands on the techniques covered in Shaping Wood. To me, it looked like nothing more than a page for page copy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Articles on 18th Century Furniture.......2004-04-01

I was a bit leery of this book because it's a collection of articles. My previous experience with collections of articles has not been good - usually they're just a bunch of unrelated stories with no real continuity or theme.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. Although this is a collection of articles that appeared in early issues of Fine Woodworking, they build on each other, with very few "junk" articles in the collection. The first article discusses the quality of period joinery and quotes a modern woodworker, Robert Emmertt, as having promised himself, "If I ever got to touch a piece of Goddard furniture, I'd never wash my hand. But now I have seen the back of a genuine Goodard piece and its drawers. And I wash my hands. My construction is better."

What the article points out is that our woodworking ancestors built furniture for a living - not for art. A modern woodworker, even one with a limited shop, can build period furniture that's as good or better than even Townsend and Goodard. The follow-on articles include pointers to books with measure drawings of period furniture, instructions for building Queen Ann Cabriole legs and Chippendale "claw and ball" feet, and an interesting article on "hidden drawers". It also contains instruction for building a blockfront chest, including a scale drawing of two pieces of blockfront furniture (at 1/4 scale).

There are a few "junk" articles, of course, (for example, "A Small Highboy") but there's not many in the collection. If you have an interest in period furniture, this is an excellent resource.

If you're just getting started in woodworking, don't buy this book - you'll be lost. But if you're reasonably proficient, this is an excellent book, especially if you're looking to improve your ability to build period furniture. Highly recommended!

                                  4 out of 5 stars Excellent, A Keeper!.......2000-05-11

This is an excellent book and I have enjoyed it very much. It is easy to follow the instructions and there are many of them in this book. She does concentrate a lot on English miniatures, these are useful though. She gives many tips and instructions on how to use everyday items and turn them into beautiful miniatures with excellent step by step instructions. I was and still am very impressed by this book. I also paid more for mine since I purchased it in a retail store. Buy it Here! Believe me you are saving money! You won't be selling or giving this one away, but you will have it worn around the edges from using it so much. I know you will enjoy it as much as I have. I plan on using it for a long time there are still so many things to do and make. I have just scratched the surface. Although this is a 5 star book, I do not like to put that on anything, I like to see the authors continue to strive for better things. I do thank her for the wonderful work and the clear concise instructions and wonderful pictures in this book. As I said in the beginning, it is a keeper!

Wonderful household accessories from the Tudor through early Art Nouveau periods. The section on making electrified lighting is outstanding. Items shown look like expensive antiques. However, all are made from very cheap supplies and found objects. Easy instructions and lots of color photos. Book Description

This is the second of a two-volume collection of studies on inconsistencies in Greek and Roman religion. Their common aim is to argue for the historical relevance of various types of ambiguity and dissonance. While the first volume focused on the central paradoxes in ancient henotheism, the present one discusses the ambiguities in myth and ritual of transition and reversal. After an introduction to the history of the myth and ritual debate (with a focus on New Year festivals and initiation) in the first chapter, the second and third chapters discuss myth and ritual of reversal--Kronos and the Kronia, and Saturnus and the Saturnalia respectively; the fourth treats two women's festivals--that of Bona Dea and the Thesmophoria; the fifth investigates the initiatory aspects of Apollo and Mars. In the background is the basic conviction that the three approaches to religion known as `substantivistic', functionalist and cultural-symbolic respectively, need not be mutually exclusive.
