From a legendary horseman¿the definitive guide to training horse and rider
Charles Wilhelm earned acclaim for his remarkable horse-training talent. What made him a bona fide celebrity was his equally uncanny gift for coaching people¿novice and expert, trainer and weekend rider alike. Presenting readers with the practical advice he offers thousands each year in demonstrations and clinics nationwide, he reveals basic principles suitable for all equestrian sports, and provides over 15 step-by-step exercises, with nearly 200 photos and illustrations that show how to put them into practice¿and get results.
Charles Wilhelm (Castro Valley, CA) is one of the top six general horse trainers in the country¿a man who is as good at training people as he is at training horses. He¿s a featured trainer at all major horse expositions, including Equine Affaire, Ride with the Stars, WesternStates Horse Expo, Ride the West, the Horse World Expos, Equine Experience, Eqwest, Equitana, and UC Davis¿s annual Horse Day symposium. Charles also holds clinics and demonstrations at his own facility in Castro Valley and throughout California. He writes monthly columns for four major equestrian publications¿Ride!, Riding, Northwest Rider, and the U.S. Horse Market¿and appeared in a CBS Evening Magazine special segment on his training program and its impact on novice and beginning horse owners. Wilhelm is renowned for his success in working with "problem" horses. His foundation training approach for horse and rider is successful in resolving issues that may range from lead changes, gaiting, or collection, through more severe problems such as bucking and bolting. But whether training a top show horse or the family trail horse, time spent with Charles Wilhelm consistently results in a dramatically improved animal. Allison Houston (San Francisco, CA) rode quarter horses for many years as a youth, and then resumed horse ownership in her mid-thirties after a 20-year hiatus. Inspired by experiencing Wilhelm's training success firsthand for over three years, she's teamed up with him to share his Foundation Training program with a wider audience.
Customer Reviews:
Useful, but not "Ultimate." .......2007-05-07
I was looking for a step-by-step method for training a young horse, and this isn't it. Mr. Wilhelm describes his round pen or leadline methods for starting and stopping the horse's feet, and then suddenly we are in the saddle teaching the horse to give to the bit, with no explanation of how we got up there!
My dream horse might automatically understand about carrying a saddle and having a rider on board without being systematically taught about those things, but I sure don't want to count on it.
There's a lot of useful information in this book, I'm not going to toss it out, but I'll need to look elsewhere for a system of foundation training.
Great Gift.......2006-03-16
I got this book as a gift for my mom, and she loves it. It really fits the "going back to horses" frame of mind, as Charles Wilhelm stated in the introduction. She has had horses her whole life, but hasn't been very involved the past 10-15 years, and Charles Wilhelm seems to understand that, and is helping her to work her way back in comfortably. Great easy read that teaches you a lot!
Excellent book - would highly recommend!.......2005-08-31
Thank you so much for writing such a great book! I found it to be very easy to read and easy to follow when applying your techniques from the book to my everyday handling of my horses. Mr. Wilhelm really knows how to convey his training methods through his words and make it easy to understand. Thank you so much Mr. Wilhelm for your book. I hope to someday make it to one of the horse expositions you go to!
If you buy one horse training book, this should be it!.......2005-08-04
Over the years, I have bought several different horse training books. But none of these books was as easy to read and undertand as Charles Wilhelm's book. More importantly, the techniques described in "Building Your Dream Horse" are easy to implement! I can definitely see the results in my horse and myself.
There are no "games" or gadgets, just straight-forward descriptions of his philosophy and the exercises. In addition, the stories and examples he provides make this "how-to" book a very entertaining read. Unlike the other horse training books I have, this one won't be gathering dust on the bookshelf.
Disappointing.......2005-08-02
I was really looking forward to reading this book. I love Charles Wilhelm, I love his shows and he has taught me a lot just by watching him. I love his manner, his way of putting things across... and the fact that his step-by-step exercises work.
However, as he would admit, he is not a writer. This book is written by the co-author, and it shows. There's nothing in the book that's 'wrong', it's just that it lacks passion - it's kind of uninspired. I get the feeling that they set out to write 'yet another horse training book' and included all the necessary sections, and all in all it reads like that.
It's also fairly thin on content. For example, if you watch CW ride, his horses have really good flexibility and shoulder control. This is what I'm working towards with my 3 yr old. I find the section in the book .... and there's at most a paragraph ... ! Just not enough to really work from. Not enough specific exercises to even get you started.
I'm not really sure who the book is aimed at. Not for a beginning trainer like me. For starting to train your horse, you're much better off with Clinton Anderson's Downunder Horsemanship. The training methods are pretty much the same, but CA's gives you a whole lot more value for money - much clearer instruction, much more specific exercises, far better illustrated (you can really see what you're trying to achieve and how from the CA photo's).
I'm sorry I didn't like the book more. I'm still a big fan of the man and the method.

Discovering Natural Horsemanship: A Beginner's Odyssey
ASIN: 0965800709 |
Book Description
Author Jaime Jackson has been a professional farrier and horseman for 22 years. But it was over 10 years ago that he headed alone into America's wild horse country, hoping to find a humane, "natural" model for domestic horse care. Frustrated by the way horses are often mistreated by their owners, Jackson felt much of this resulted from misunderstanding the nature of the horse. What Jackson discovered is that horses do indeed have a natural order, and that knowledge can be applied in truly helpful ways to our domestic horses. In a thoughtful, systematic approach, Jackson lays out his revolutionary ideas about natural horse care in this remarkable book. In the first chapters, the reader steps through wild horse country with Jackson as guide, and is drawn into the nuances of social structure, locomotion and gaits, and the hooves-which Jackson states with authority, "are terribly misunderstood in the domestic horse world." Having armed the reader with a solid foundation of the horse's natural world, Jackson then challenges the reader and nearly every major principle of modern horse care, to "apply what we have learned." The final chapters demonstrate step-by-step what horsemen and horsewomen can and should do.
From hoof care and balanced riding in concert with the horse's natural abilities, to new forms of communication and humane care, The Natural Horse challenges conventional horse care on every front. First published in 1992 and just re-released in a handsome new edition, The Natural Horse is a must for those interested in applying natural methods to the care of their horses.
Customer Reviews:
An absolute essential for all horse owners.......2007-05-27
This book presents information on how to bring our domestic horses back to a natural, healthy lifestyle. Jaime (the author) takes vital information from the wild horses and uses this information to create better living conditions and practices for our horses. This book really shows how far we have brought the horse away from his natural ways, and it outlines how we can help our horses to become happier and healtier in simple, inexpensive ways. I've used this information and my horses are doing better than they've ever done. I have several of Jaimes other books also and all my horses are barefoot and completely sound and healthy.
Natural Horse.......2006-07-28
The Mustangs of the olde and now west , I came acroos my first herd of wild Mustangs in 1970 in New Mexico , my two young sons Simon and Paul, looked with great amazement at the bold magnificent creatures untouch by man, not molested , standing in natural beauty. Not shoed , but feet/hoofs that could travel over all natural terrains with ease. This book express what we should do in keeping healthy , strong ,horses trained with natural horsemanship and experiencing
the natural strenght of a true heathy and contented , happy horse that performs with ease. Our own horses are just that , natural , just as God created them , but raise with Natural Horsemanship training by my son Simon.
Great book by Jaime Jackson worth puting in your libary.
Should be required reading for anyone who handles horses.......2003-07-13
This book is fundamental, in multiple ways. The main topic described and discussed is the horse's hooves. Anyone who knows horses understands that hoof care is truly fundamental to the soundness of the horse. This is the best explanation I have ever seen of how nature intended horse hooves to function, and how our removal of horses from their natural environment impacts their hooves, thus their ability to move as nature meant them to. The author's deep and broad knowledge of horses is especially to be appreciaed. In addition to opening our minds to a greater understanding of their natural locomotion, he also explains clearly many other apsect of horse behavior in the wild, and how their needs change as we put them in unnatural situations and make unnatural demands on them. Anyone responsible for a horse's care, rider or not, should be required to read this book. Anyone who just loves these magnificent beasts will appreciate them all the more for the enhanced understanding of them this book makes possible. If you are thinking of acquiring a horse, make this the first book you read.
The more training manuels the better...........1999-11-02
What a wonderful celebration of the horse and the training and communication that goes along with owning one of these majestic animals!!! This is a beautiful book for anyone who loves the larger than life quality and grace of the horse. The photos are wonderful! Another one of my favorites is a training book called Horse, Follow Closely by GaWaNi Pony Boy. Check them both out!!
A refreshing and acurate study of horse reality........1999-05-23
Jamie definately shows us a refreshing look at the natural horse thru the horses eyes. Readers will come away from this book with a new understanding of why horses do what they do and why humans have errored in the past. Take a real look at what we thought a hoof should look like and now see " the natural hoof" and it's advantages. Getting back to the basics will shatter modern beliefs about horse care. This information has been slow coming and will take generations to take hold, and it will!

Jill Gallina's Christmas Pins.......2007-05-07
Ms. Gallina has done impressive research. Her pictures are well done, in color, and carefully organized by designer and theme. Her captions are descriptive and the values are clear.
Christmas Pins Past & Present Second Edition.......2006-03-30
This somewhat small book was extremely helpful to me in identifying the values of some recently purchased Weiss candle Christmas Tree Pins. It has also shown me what pins do not carry such a high value.
I would love to see more books like this one for holiday jewelry.
I would highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in Vintage and New Christmas Jewelry.
Excellent Book for the Novice or Advanced Collector.......2004-12-31
Very enjoyable book with great history of the designers of today and yesteryear that made Christmas Pins. Good color pictures with a price guide that reflects today's prices. If you are a new pin collector this is a must have at a reasonable price. If you are a seasoned collector you will enjoy reading about the short histories of your favorite designers.
A must have for collectors and dealers.......2004-09-20
This book by Jill is one of my favorite books, and not just because my own jewelry is included. Jill's wonderful photography showcases a wonderous variety of this collecting category. I doubt there are very many collectors who don't have a least one Christmas tree pin in their collection. And truly, it is very likely that every single woman who loves jewelry has at least one tree pin for holiday wear. This beautiful book is a perfect addition to any vintage costume jewelry reference library, for collectors and dealers alike. And it may even convert non-collectors! Thanks Jill!

Christmas Pins- Past and Present: Collector's Guide to Ident.......2000-05-27
This is the first Christmas jewelry book I had ever found (so I bought it right away) and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have used it often to shop for pins and identify my favorite designers. The photography is excellent! The variety is also great. I just wish there were more pictures and a more comprehensive collection of photos for each designer because certain makers aren't thoroughly covered (like Eisenberg and Art). I did appreciate the backgrounds given on the various companies and the dates they produced their jewelry. This is certainly a valuable addition to my library!

Customer Reviews:
Mary Morrison's Christmas Jewelry 2nd edition.......2007-05-07
If you are going garage sale shopping, this book will fit in your tote and provide immediate information. Ms. Morrison does a good job of organizing alphabetically by designer, and she takes the time to warn about copies, particularly the Weiss tree pins. She also has a theme section with pointsettia pins, candles, reindeer, etc. I really like the cover where she lays a selection of her pins on a piece of Christmas fabric. I do find the print of the captions very small, even wearing my glasses, no doubt an accommodation for the size of the book. I also sometimes have trouble deciding which pin among three or four she is describing. Each is noted in the text with a letter of the alphabet, but there's no letter on the picture. I would also recommend that in her next edition, her husband not photograph any pins on dark paper backgrounds. In several instances, a dark burgundy or sapphire paper makes it impossible to see the details of the pin.
Best Christmas Jewelry Book.......2006-11-28
Mary Morrison has put together a wonderful array of some of the best costume Christmas jewelry out there! A good range of the inexpensive and available to the rare and most desirable pieces with reasonable prices that reflect the market of the time the book was published. If you only get one book on this collecting area, this is the one to get
Read and Reread.......2001-02-15
I love this book! I am a beginning collector and this book has inspired me. The research is thorough, and it is great to finally know the story behind the pins I already have.
Christmas Jewelry is a MUST HAVE for collectors and dealers.......2000-04-28
Christmas Jewelry by Mary Morrison is the very best book currently available concentrating on costume Christmas jewelry. The photography is excellent, allowing you to clearly see the details in each pin. Mary's descriptions with each photo are informative and interesting. It's size is very convenient for carrying to shops and shows. It is extremely easy to use. The variety of pins shown is staggering; as a Christmas tree pin collector with over 100 pins, my only disappointment with this book is that it is not a catalog where I can place orders!

Customer Reviews:
An OK place to start...........1999-09-05
This book is an OK place to start for anyone planning to remodel their kitchen. It tells you about the basic materials. Dream Kitchen also makes you start thinking about how you want to use your kitchen. It's worth a look.
Dream Kitchen Planning is a gem of a book. A real find........1999-01-25
Dream Kitchen Planning is a terrific tool for anyone who's thinking about remodeling a kitchen or planning one from scratch. It's easy to read and follow; chock full of useful, practical information; and written with a wit and easy, conversational style that you do not often find in books of this genre. It's obviously written by someone who knows what they're talking about, someone who knows what good kitchen planning and design is first hand. After reading the book, you can almost imagine sitting down and having a cup of coffee with the writer -- in, where else?, a beautifully designed, warm and welcoming kitchen straight out of Petrowski's book. I recommend it heartily.
This book is helpful, informative, and easy to understand........1996-06-20
DREAM KITCHEN PLANNING walks the reader through every step
of the design and renovation process.
An experienced kitchen and bath design writer, Petrowski has
produced a well-organized planning guide that is both informative
and a pleasure to read.
With lovely line drawings throughout, this simple guide helps readers
shape their dreams by determining exactly what kind of kitchen they
want based on their lifestyles.
A must-read for anyone remodeling their kitchen.
