Book Description
When Blessed Are The Blood Mares was published in 1978, no other single source existed that contained such a wide range of information on the care of the breeding of mare from mating, through gestation, to foaling and nursing, and on the care of the young horse. Now there is: the second edition of this classic.

For the serious broodmare manager..........2007-06-08
I really enjoyed this book, especially because it went into detail about what to look for in the neo-natal foal and post-partum mare. It gave distinct things to look for which helped enable me to make the decision to call my vet in the middle of the night, and eventually saved my colt's life. Indispensible book to have on the book shelf if you breed and foal your own mares. Another great thing about this book, is that it goes into detail about when to re-breed after foaling, when not to, and what steps you will go thru (explained) on how to get her pregnant. Not quite enough information for me on follicle size measurements, edema measurements, short cycling, etc., but for the most part, this is a must have book.
Pleasant and informative.......2003-09-06
Provides people new to breeding a good overall view of the process. It is easy to read and a good reference. This is not the highly technical manual that would turn away the amatuer. At the same time it lacks depth to be a truly serious resource.
great book.......2003-01-03
A must have for the average horse person. This book is extrememly informative, written in a lively way that keeps you reading from start to finish, and is understandable by the layman. I would recommend it highly.
Excellent resource for novice breeders.......2002-05-29
This book is a great resource for novice breeders. There is great information and knowledge will help you put your mind at ease. I recommend this book for everyone who is hoping for their first foal.
no job for a lady.......2000-12-31
Honestly, I have not read these professional advice books by Dr. Lose. However, If I ever have cause to need advice or mares, foals, or any other health advice on horses, I will be sure to consult her teachings on the subject. I just want to take this opportunity tell anyone interested in her current publications to please read the one book that really gives us the opportunity to have an inside look into what her world is really all about, and to see how she grew into that world. That book is "No Job For A Lady". See where it all started! What a charming and engrossing viewpoint projected by a great veterinarian in the making. Thanks, Phyllis. I read this when I was 10 years old, and 22 years later, I still remeber what I saw.

Book Description
The interiors of the great country and town houses built in Britain in the eighteenth century were splendid creations, increasingly extravagant as fashions changed and aristocratic home owners attempted to outdo one another. This gorgeous book surveys the decorative schemes of these fabulous homes, considering the combined effects created by design, furniture, textiles, silver, and artworks.
John Cornforth, the foremost authority on British interiors of this era, covers a wide range of subjects. He discusses changing social practice and the uses to which rooms were put; the way that fashions in dress mirrored fashions in interiors; the impact of chinoiserie and Eastern styles that became prevalent due to burgeoning trade; the primacy of upholstery in beds, curtains, wall hangings, seat furniture, and case covers; the influence of decorator William Kent; and the ways that collections of art were integrated into designs. And he concludes with detailed case studies of eight preeminent country houses.
Engagingly written and generously illustrated, this book is certain to appeal to anyone who maintains, restores, or enjoys visiting historic houses.

EXQUISITE GEORGIAN.......2006-03-08
This is a beautifully realized book on a most deserving subject. The text is highly informative and the images are vivid. The craftmanship of these interiors is astounding. Early Georgian furniture and interior design is so elegant and it does not overwelm, like its contemporary styles like Louis XIV, the woodwork and molding in these homes is just breathtaking. If you have any interest in the Georgian style or just appreciate beautiful interiors then you will love this book.
All you need to know about early Georgian English Interiors.......2005-10-25
As a classically trained english architect I find myself in a unique position to authoritively review this book. And what a book. That perfect blend of photos (most of them colour), drawings - both plans and renderings, and an informative text. This is a must for anyone interested in early Georgian Interiors, as it comprehensively covers interior architecture, decoration, furniture/artwork, and the general design aesthetic of this era. If only we still had the artisians and cratspeople to still build like this. It is an inspiration to any aspiring classical architect.
Book Description
The English House is a vivid photographic tour of the private homes and lifestyles of the storied English countryside that offers England's rich span of architectural and interior styles as wonderfully inspiring and intiguing examples of current influential decorating trends. Whether a charming and humble cottage or a grand Georgian and Palladian manor house, all the homes featured in this stunning book illustrate the epitome of styles that define the English house.
The delightful text details each house's quirks while highlighting the decorating approaches and design ideas-startling juxtapositions, new takes on tradition, witty visual puns, and bold new combinations. This is an ideal book for any anglophile and is equally appealing to anyone with an interest in interior decoration, with many design ideas that easily translate into interiors on either side of the Atlantic.
Sally Griffiths started writing after her own home was featured in British House & Garden 20 years ago. She runs a photo library called Red Cover and is the author of The English Country Cottage.

Book Description
This collection represents the first large scale attempt to discuss the Middle Eastern mandates as a totality. It compares the application and effects of this very specific form of late colonialism from a variety of different disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, architecture, archival conservation, economics, history, law and sociology. It contains analyses at both micro and macro levels, including specific instances of revolt or collaboration, studies of particular individuals, of professional groups and their contributions to "nation-building," comparisons between the various political and cultural policies of the mandatory powers, and the formation and practice of "le savoir colonial" by contemporary ethnographers, officials, physicians and teachers. The volume will be of interest to historians of imperialism and of the twentieth century Middle East.
Book Description
This long-awaited book is the first to focus solely on the brilliant but often neglected interiors and furniture of the great British architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869-1944).
Lutyens's lifelong creative partnership with landscape designer Gertrude Jekyll spurred the revival of the English country garden, and his designs-rooted in the English Arts and Crafts movement but inspired by Classicism-remain popular today for their clean lines, angles, and contrasts. Published with the cooperation of the Lutyens family, and illustrated with specially commissioned and archival photographs of intact or restored interiors and gardens, original furniture designs, and contemporary reinterpretations of the Lutyens style, the book provides fresh insight into a design genius whose masterful synthesis of function and artistry has enduring relevance and appeal.
ELIZABETH WILHIDE was born in the United States and has lived in England since the late 1960s. She is a leading expert on interior design who has written, co-authored, or contributed to dozens of books on the subject, including Abrams' William Morris: Decor & Design.
CANDIA LUTYENS, who has contributed the foreword, is the great-niece of Sir Edwin Lutyens. She lives in England.
116 illustrations, 90 in full color, 9 x 10"

Lutyens houses come alive.......2007-03-27
Although this book was published in 2000, I was surprised to find no customer had yet reviewed it. It is a little different from other books on the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens.
First of all, most of the photographs are in color, bringing the subjects to life in a way that was not possible in previous books, many of them relying largely on old photographs from Country Life magazine. Thus we get a much more real feeling of those classic Lutyen houses, nestling into their incredible English gardens (largely designed by Gertrude Jekyll) and see how the design is carried on through to the interiors. All the favorite Lutyens houses are there - Goddards, Orchards, Little Thakeham, Munstead Wood, Deanery Garden, Marsh Court and more.
Another difference in this book is that it deals not only with the architecture but also with the design of the interiors, the architectural fixtures and accessories and the furniture, which in themselves are amazing - they bow to tradition, yet look to the future - and many have been borrowed by more than one modern designer.
This book is well worth consideration.
Book Description
Great Houses of Scotland presents 26 historic castles and manors in the land of ancient legend that inspired Sir Walter Scott and Shakespeare's Macbeth. Over 300 rich color photographs take the reader beyond the velvet ropes and through the grand public drawing rooms, private bedrooms, and back stairways of Scotland's famous houses.
From formal, gilded halls to rustic trophy rooms, the range of interior styles reflects the personality of Scotland's foremost families. Charming anecdotes and candid character sketches of the famed individuals who built these houses make this a fascinating social history as well as an architectural tour.
The selection of houses reflects the development of architectural style in Scotland, from old tower houses such as Cawdor and Traquair to the spectacular baroque of Drumlanrig and the pioneering Classicism of Kinross by Sir William Bruce. The masterful architecture of William Adam is highlighted here, including his work on Arniston, the House of Dun, and the palatial Duff House. Besides such beloved favorites as Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford, Blair, Hopetoun, and Mellerstain, the book is full of remarkable surprises, including the High Victorian Gothic extravaganza of the newly restored Mount Stuart, and the Edwardian opulence of Ardkinglas. The Scottish ability to combine intimacy and grandeur has never been more glorious than in the silver staircase, marble dairy, and teak stable of Manderston; Dunrobin Castle perches on cliff's edge as if in a fairy tale-- the inimitable character of each historic house shines in this beautiful book.
With encouraging plans for restoration and revitalization by the present owners-- the National Galleries of Scotland's initiative to restore Duff House as a satellite gallery, plans for an opera school at Yester, the rejuvenation of a brewery at Traquair-- this is a timely chronicle of the living history of these great houses.

Book Description
This volume is the first comprehensive study of the work of the Society of Jesus in the British Isles during the sixteenth century. Beginning with an account of brief papal missions to Ireland (1541) and Scotland (1562), it goes on to cover the foundation of a permanent mission to England (1580) and the frustration of Catholic hopes with the failure of the Spanish Armada (1588). Throughout the book, the activities of the Jesuits - preaching, propaganda, prayer and politics - are set within a wider European context, and within the framework of the Society's Constitutions. In particular, the sections on religious life and involvement in diplomacy show how flexibly the Jesuits adapted their "way of proceeding" to the religious and political circumstances of the British Isles, and to the demands of the Counter-Reformation.

Inspiring:.......2004-12-31
As an Architect always in search of refreshing ideas I was truly pleased when I first reviewed this book. All architects should be familiar with Voysey's career and work. Next to my monograph of Mellor Meigs and Howe I can think of no more favorite book that I have purchased this past year. Voysey was a forerunner of the modern movement, a true innovator and artist.
