Book Description
Sometimes, change comes on four legs.
In his popular and widely praised
Running to the Mountain, Jon Katz wrote of the strength and support he found in the massive forms of his two yellow Labrador retrievers, Julius and Stanley. When the Labs were six and seven, a breeder who’d read his book contacted Katz to say she had a dog that was meant for him—a two-year-old border collie named Devon, well bred but high-strung and homeless. Katz already had a full canine complement—but, as he writes, “Change loves me. . . . It comes in all forms. . . . Sometimes, change comes on four legs.” Shortly thereafter he brought Devon home.
A Dog Year shows how a man discovered much about himself through one dog (and then another), whose temperament seemed as different from his own as day from night. It is a story of trust and understanding, of life and death, of continuity and change. It is by turns insightful, hilarious, and deeply moving.

¿Change loves me, defines and stalks me like a laser-guided smart bomb. It comes at me in all forms, suddenly and with enormous impact, from making shifts in work to having and raising a kid to buying a cabin on a distant mountaintop. A Sad Ending.......2007-10-10
I actually liked the book and was going to get other books by the author until I read the reviews of 'A Good Dog'. In it - he murders Orson (Devon) his 'soul mate'. Reading these reviews ruined the rest of 'A Dog Year' for me and I will NEVER purchase another book from this guy.
Before reading A Dog Year.......2007-08-20
If you have not already read this book, I would recommend you read the reviews for the book which chronicles the end of Orson's life (the gorgeous dog on the front cover. In A Dog Year you are introduced to Katz's pet project - Orson. We are lead to believe that Orson (aka Devon) is Katz's soulmate and Katz is the person who can save the poor troubled and mis-handled Orson. Although I somewhat enjoyed a Dog Year, I was worried that Katz had taken on something he didn't understand. Orson's final book - A Good Dog - proved me right. Katz cannot handle Orson and eventually euthanizes him. Katz made his money out of Orson by writing these books and then gave up on him. Considering the depth of feeling that Orson had for the author - I was left incensed and speechless at the end of A Good Dog. As an aside - the other border collie you are introduced to in a Dog Year is given to a new home because he doesn't fit with Katz either. So, before putting even more money into the coffers of a man who said that he could not justify spending money on Orson to find out what his issues were, I would refrain from spending money on this book.
Read it in a day.......2007-07-19
I came across this book quite accidentally (I was trying to locate "Marley and Me" at my local Borders). I loved the story, couldn't put it down.
I am disappointed to read the negative reviews from others, as I knew nothing of Mr. Katz before reading this book. I will have to read on to know what other's are claiming to be the "real" story (And thank you for ruining it for me).
For those who say he "killed" the labs, I will stand on the other side of that fence. I have a lab who is slowly dying a miserable death from cancer. Her prognosis was 4 weeks...at the beginning of November! Eight months and counting...two vets and radiologists confirmed the diagnosis. It's not that she is just "old"...labs have a tendency to hide the pain to please the owner. Our girl acts like she is fine when she feels she needs to- to please us. The reality is, cancer and heart treatments for dogs are not like that for people. I cannot make the decision for my boyfriend, but if our girl could talk, I know she would tell him that he should just let her go.
I will read the other books and form my own opinion.
Four Dogs and Jon Katz.......2007-07-01
Of the four dogs in "A Dog Year," three have been euthanized and one has been given away.
Katz presents himself in this book as a genial, bumbling dog lover. In spite of his incredible mistakes as a trainer, in a beautiful moment at the end of the book it seems that the rescued border collie Devon has come to trust him and has found a true home. "A Good Dog" tells a very different story.
Anyone thinking of buying this book should look at "A Good Dog" or the Amazon reviews of it. Katz himself has posted a review of the book and a number of replies to his critics, which are anything but genial. After reading "A Good Dog," "A Dog Year" reads like a fantasy.
Katz Kills Dogs.......2007-06-25
Before you buy this book, you need to know that Devon, the Border Collie, is killed by Katz, as detailed in the later book "A Good Dog." Katz had his two yellow labs, Julius and Stanley, killed at the first sign of illness, before attempting any treatment. He tells Devon, on page 88, "I will never abandon you," playing up his promise to his dog as something solemn and sacred. Although I thought Katz did almost everything wrong in this book, I was willing to forgive it because he claimed he loved Devon and was dedicated to the best care of his "soulmate." Then I come to find out that Katz has written another book about having Devon killed, while the dog was young and in good health, for what Katz decided were insurmountable behavioral problems. This new book, A Good Dog, makes the argument that it is the moral responsiblity of dog owners to kill their pets at the first sign of trouble instead of spending money on training or medical treatment. For Katz, you had better be young, healthy, and happy, or you get the ax. This is a disgusting person who should not be allowed to own animals. He most definitely should not be viewed as an animal lover or an expert on animals. Do not buy any books written by Jon Katz.

Specifications, not Nostalgia.......2004-02-19
If you're looking for a trip down memory lane this book is not the choice. I was expecting a coffee table book with pictures of vintage snowmobiles. Instead, it is repackaged period shop manuals. That's great if you own a vintage sled and need to know specs, it's probably invaluable for that purpose. There is no description for the book, so my fault for assuming (or hoping) it would have color period pictures - which it does not.

Extreme Disappointment.......2007-07-30
In the past year there has been a lot of exciting and interesting work created that combine both knitting and crochet. With the hope of finding inspiring and innovative designs and based solely on the book's description and intriguing cover, I bought this book to fill in an Amazon order and get the free shipping.
I was extremely disappointed. There are 22 "stylish designs" in this book and only 7 patterns are garments. The other patterns are accessories or home decorating and over half of those are simply crocheted flowers slapped on a knitting project or the tired basic granny square worked into one more design.
The knit i-cord dog leash with chain 3 crochet loops around the handle for "trim" is the worst of the book but others come very close. I wish I had been able to scan through this book because it would never have passed my buy test -- are there at least three patterns that I might be interested in or that inspire me? The pattern on the cover of this book was the ONLY one.
WOW!.......2007-03-27
This book is great. The instructions are well wtitten and easy to follow. I am almost finished with the child's 'Cherries and Berries' sweater, it is too cute. My granddaughter is going to love it. Thanks Candi Jensen!!!
Dissapointed!.......2007-03-12
I bought this book because I have a few frustrations as someone who prefers to crochet but is only able to find interesting patterns in knit. Or, the patterns I find lack something...they are too much of the same pattern over and over, no texture or color variations (other than variegated yarn). Plus, both knit and crochet patterns are too grannyish and are not in the least bit exciting.
I got excited when I saw this book, because I thought it would blend textures with knitting and crochet..and possibly make the knitting not as boring by adding a little crochet to it and by adding a little bit of style and femininity. The tank top on the cover created all these expectations because it is cute and feminine.
The book has the tank top, and another pretty and realistic sweater. There is a v-kneck cardigan that is not very flattering. There is one sweater in the book that is pretty and very vintage in an 18th century kind of way, but who would ever wear it. There are two shrugs...are we tired of shrugs yet? And..hello...they're not in style anymore. A couple of crocheted purses...which in a world where your purse is a statement and coach bags are it...who really wants to carry a felted purse with big tacky flowers on it unless you live in mayberry. Girly beaded fingerless gloves that you can wear with your prom dress...yeah right( AND who wears fingerless gloves unless you got them as a gift from a goofy knitting/crocheting relative). A dopey hat and arm warmers. What are arm warmers and who wants or needs them? A cute twenties-style crochet hat with 3 flowers. Some bad scarves that look like you dyed your grandma's table runner with bad colors and tied it around your kneck (attempted suicide?). An opera purse...nothing special. A back-to-school backpack that you will never make and your kid will never use...although it is kinda sweet. A DOG SWEATER...Aren't there enough dogs wearing bad sweaters...didn't God provide them with a coat to begin with? A dog leash...finally a pattern for a dog leash..I've been searching (sarcasm).I didn't pay all this money for this book for dog leash and dog sweater patterns...when I can get 50 on the internet for free. There is a really overly cutesy and girly and boxy little girls sweater. There were some nice household items: lots of nice knitted and crocheted pillows, a pretty afghan that is not that innovative (you could have come up with the design without this pattern) except maybe in the color choices. Elegant placemat and ringholders...yawn( sort of pretty in a granny kinda way but not exciting). And...to top it off, a christmas stocking, yawn....another thing that I can find 50 of on the internet. Thank goodness for one thing...no FUN FUR patterns!!
After I got the book, I immediately shelved it and moved on. Buy it if you can get it really cheap for the few decent patterns, or take a look at it in the library first...I may donate my copy.
For Knitters only.......2007-02-14
Projects require you to know how to knit. I'm sure for knitters this is a nice book. But completely useless to me as just a crocheter. Will keep it in case one of these days I ever learn to knit.
KNITTING LOVES CROCHET pairs up the best of both worlds........2007-01-04
Candi Jensen's projects are designed to highlight the pairing of knitting and crocheting: arts usually kept apart in their own books. From embellishments from the world of crochet to finished sweaters and clothing to knitted products with crochet bands and embellishments incorporated into the design, KNITTING LOVES CROCHET pairs up the best of both worlds.
