5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-29

This is a great arena book with work plans to help the rider plan lessons etc. easy to understand and well displayed for while you are riding in you arena. hang it up and you can refer to it with ease. Great way of planning you lessons and helpful ideas to extend your riding.

5 out of 5 stars Great horse exercise book .......2007-01-11

this is a great book for learning all the little things you need to know or for working on all those things you should know
what a great book awesome diagrams and simple explanations any one can use this book would be a great tool for instructors

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the Intermediate rider working at home........2006-07-13

This book is great for riders who can easily walk trot and lope/canter and depart on a correct lead.

This is somewhat of a "crossover" book--dressage and western with exercises that are great for horse and rider, but which my not be popular with di-hard dressage or western only trainers. The exercises would be difficult in many cases for the rider using a true forward seat hunt saddle unless the stirrups were legthened A LOT.

Very handy for a rider working at home without regular lessons.

2 out of 5 stars In an enlightened age, Cherry is still old school.......2005-02-10

Cherry Hill has come up with some neat little exercise books to offer you training ideas. But she has some outdated ideas on horse training. Compare the advice you get in her book "The Formative Years" with some of the more enlightened trainers published in the last 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to your equestrian library........2004-01-12

The number of excellent reviews for this book reflect the application to riders of all levels and disciplines. The most valuable aspect of this book is that it encourages the rider to formulate a plan for their schooling sessions and make a conscious decision not to do the same thing day in day out - something we are all guilty of on occasion. Make your schooling sessions more fun for you and your horse with this informative guide.

              Book Description

When Paganism and Gothic culture collide, a powerful blend of independent thought and magickal transformation is often the result. Raven Digitalis explores this dynamic intersection and what draws us to the dark side.

Digitalis introduces many kinds of Goths and Witches, and the philosophy of each. Practical as well as insightful, Goth Craft covers the basics of magick, with special attention to blood magick, death magick, and necromancy. You'll also learn how to channel dark emotions, express yourself through the dark arts (clothes, hair, makeup, body modification), choose appropriate Goth music for ritual, and myriad other ways to merge magickal practice with the Goth lifestyle.

From working shadow magick to spellcasting on the dance floor, Goth Craft revels in the exciting convergence of two vital subcultures.

"An insightful, honest, and spiritual exploration of the intersection of witchcraft and goth culture not only for those who have a foot in each of these worlds, but also for those explorers on one side, seeking to know the ways of the other." -Christopher Penczak, author of the Temple of Witchcraft series

5 out of 5 stars Not fluffy in the least.......2007-10-08

Raven has done it! This is one of the books that will make modern magickal practitioners think.

The Gothic subculture, and the pagan community have been related and yet so far apart for a long time. Many Goths identify with pagan beliefs, yet many pagans are pushing Goths away for fear that we will become less accepted if the "modern world" finds that we are exactly as they have portrayed us to be, no matter how untrue that would actually be.

Raven have finally wrote a book from the perspective of an initiated Witch and Priest, who is also a Goth, who knows what he is talking about regarding both communities. Plus, he covers controversial topics such as sex, drugs, and body modification. It is time for us as pagans and Witches to start evolving our Craft, and to do that requires new thinking. I believe Raven has given us that opportunity.

              5 out of 5 stars Goth Craft.......2007-10-06

              *courtesy of Copper-Moon [...]*

Many contemporary Goths are drawn are drawn to Pagan spirituality for its flexibility, lack of dogma, and deeply transformative nature. Similarly many Pagans are drawn to the Goth subculture for its artistic, explorative, and introspective nature. The cross-overs of each subculture are uncanny and when the two paths are combined they a birth a unique blend of magick and independent thought.

Goth Craft focuses on this intermingling of Goth culture and Paganism, a unique convergence Digitalis calls Dark Witchcraft. According to Digitalis, darkness is a potent magickal force, not to be confused with evil. Though often maligned and misunderstood by popular culture, Digitalis explains, "When our dark side is brought into awareness, when we accept our faults, short comings, and the nature of our human tendencies, we begin to develop more fully...Illusion is shattered when we are forced to ultimately face ourselves".

The book begins with a brief overview of Goth history and Goth styles. Digitalis then lays out the basics of contemporary Witchcraft and gives the reader a short introduction to several magickal traditions including Druidry, Qabalah, Shamanism, and Voodoo. The remainder text is devoted to the magickal currents of Goth lifestyle such as how to incorporate the Dark Arts of make-up, clothing, hair, and jewelry into daily rituals of spiritual alignment. In his chapter entitled "Philosophies of the Dark Witch", Digitalis explains how to channel through "dark emotionalism" including discussions on dealing with suicide, depression, cutting, and the "Dark Nights of the Soul".

Goth Craft is the perfect handbook for Goth Witches or those simply interested in the Goth subculture and its magickal applications. It contains sufficient beginner material to enable the reader to understand magickal concepts while introducing more advanced theory for seasoned practitioners. Digitalis responsibly tackles topics most books shy away from including blood magick, sexuality and gender identity, death, vampires, and the magickal use of drugs. What's more, he provides a fascinating analysis of relating ancient Pagan practices to contemporary magickal traditions

5 out of 5 stars Dispeling the myths of the Gothic subculture.......2007-10-05

As the owner of Viridian Books, an online bookstore for the reader who thinks outside of the box, I try to locate and read books that I think would appeal to my customers for purchase.
Thus it is the case with Raven's book The Goth Craft. He does an excellent job in dispeling the myths and xenophobic statments and thoughts about Goth people as well as Pagans.
Being a Corporate Goth myself, I am glad that he did such an excellent job on handling such a subject. Most authors would have thrown together a book created purely for the sake of making money. Not so with Raven; this book makes you think, giving people a reason, no matter if you are Goth or Pagan or neither, to believe in themselves.
Being a lover of the dark does not make you evil or Satanic. A lover of the dark is one who understands that everything has a light and a dark side and Raven explains this with a style that is all his own. He writes in the manner of someone who has done their research, someone who passionately cares about their subject matter.
I will be writing another review of this book on my own bookstore website but it will be another accolade on such a fine job.
Thank you Raven; you've given this Corporate Goth a reason to smile!

              5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding!!!.......2007-10-04

Goth Craft is Spellbinding!!!! Loving Witchcraft and all it has to offer and dabbling in pieces of dark culture throughout life, Goth Craft nails all sides of the culture in intelligent, thought provoking ways. Raven takes you into both sides of dark culture, luring you in with all of the vivid detail. His knowledge base and insight into both the Craft and Goth are refreshing and down to earth and are delivered in a refreshing, conversational style.

Raven's summery of Witchcraft is breathtaking. No one I have read has described the essence of Witchcraft with such depth and reverence. To encompass the true being of Witchcraft in seven pages, without feeling as if the soul of it has bee left out is miraculous and well achieved. Raven is a true artist who lives and breathes the Craft and all the beauty that lies within and beneath.

Raven proves he has a true desire to teach, opening up a humanness and a true dedication and caring for the reader, by touching upon times when one finds the self in a graven place, the ways to pull oneself out of the darker realm, when those dark emotions may become too overwhelming or deep seeded. He also, encompasses the arenas of sexuality and gender, lending to his integrity. Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll are balanced in a respectful and truthful manner, engaging the reader in ways they can be incorporated, with dignity, into all sides of dark culture, including ritual.

Most touching for me is how Goth Craft challenges Withes out there who are fearful of walking the line between "White and Black" Witchcraft; reminding you that you can be a Dark "White" Witch, without ever having to touch the "Black" side (I apologize in advance for the reference to color that lends itself to the defining of good and evil in the Craft, the hope is for better global definitions in the future for this distinction). Society tends to try and connect Witchcraft with evil (nothing being further from the truth) leaving a lot of Witches trying to focus purely on the "safe" side of Witchcraft. Dark Craft embraces how and why being a Dark Witch is beautiful and that being a Dark Witch is having the guts to find the essence of ones true self, daring to dig deep enough within the heart and soul to truly uncover our darker emotions and layers, so that we can truly be One with the God and Goddess. Being Dark is being true to the ways of nature and the hidden portals of our soul.

In Goth Craft, Raven has brilliantly put the nail in the coffin and transcended dark culture through to the other side. A must read for anyone willing to embrace the beauty and tranquility of the dark side.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.......2007-09-21

When I first heard of this book, I was a little leary. Over the past few years, there has been a spike in interest in all things dark as it pertains to magick, and there are some books out there that seem to have been cranked out sheerly to fill that marketing need. Not so with Goth Craft. Raven is writing from the perspective of someone who loves both magick and the Gothic subculture. He is steeped in the music, the aesthetics, and the philosophies of Goth, and this clearly comes through in his treatment of the subject of how and where Goth intersects with magickal practice. The book is genuine and well-researched, with a wide range of information. The very visual presentation of the book is an added bonus, and it really serves to underscore the fact that Goth has a strong aesthetic component. If you've ever wondered what those somber, black-clad souls were doing at your Pagan Pride Day, this is the book to help you understand.

                      Book Description

What do Pueblo Indians find aesthetically pleasing in their art? This book answers that question by examining pottery figurines, which emerged late in the nineteenth century. Their sudden appearance was a break with previous genres of Pueblo creative expression and a response to Anglo-Americans transforming life around them. From their inception, pottery figurines were infused with a definite political and social message. They often tapped into the dualism inherent in the Pueblo worldview in which human figures possessed animal heads, humor was juxtaposed with seriousness, and outsider and insider were simultaneously presented. Today the popular “storyteller” figures generate income for their creators, but Lange shows another side to the appreciation of these objects and their antecedents.

As the first-ever sustained aesthetic inquiry into a Pueblo sense of beauty, this path breaking contribution offers a new view of Pueblo artistic endeavors. Lange skillfully delineates how their creativity serves religion and traditional life but also describes the dissonance between those values and the process of making objects for the commercial market. In unraveling a cultural aesthetic from a study of pottery figurines, Lange interprets how these objects arise from specific historical or cultural events. But also discussed is how figurines contain clues about Pueblo artists who straddle two distinct worlds—the traditional and the modern.

                        Book Description

This book explores the synergetic relationship between rain and the indigenous peoples of the arid and semi-arid Southwest. The exemplary collection of the Heard Museum in Phoenix provides rich stores of cultural art objects representing the Hopi, Zuni, and Rio Grande Pueblos, the Tohono O'odham, and the Indé and Diné tribes. Examples include Hopi eagle dancers wearing kilts decorated with cloud and rain symbols, and Hopi water maiden katsinas crowned with rain-cloud headpieces. A Tohono O'odham wine basket is used during the rain ceremony to hold saguaro wine; Diné ceremonial baskets are used in prayer for rain, and Diné storm pattern textiles illustrate the Water Meeting Place at the center of the Whirling Logs, where sacred corn, beans, squash and tobacco are grown.

Featuring 160 color reproductions, Rain is a glimpse into the arts of southwestern tribes and a shimmering portrait of the desert's oldest miracle.
