4 out of 5 stars Tasty recipes for the entire year!.......2005-10-04

Wild Rice is a food that is held in high esteem, especially in Minnesota where I live. It is also one of the most delectable foods in existence. If you have never tasted it, you surely have missed a special treat. It is grown and harvested in several states with Minnesota and California as the primary producers. In the past it was harvested by Native American living in the northern and central states.

In her book Wild Rice For All Seasons Cookbook, Beth Anderson shares the history and lore of wild rice and some of the most delicious recipes for spring, summer, fall and winter, using this food.

Wild Rice Almondine is a personal favorite of mine. It is fast and easy to prepare and the author includes interesting variations the reader may enjoy. The Herbed Wild Rice is wonderful with grilled chicken and a side salad. But the Webster's West Cream of Wild Rice Soup is absolutely mouth-watering! There are so many fabulous recipes in this book, that even someone like me, who avoids cooking, will be drawn to this cookbook. The result of preparing these dishes is worth the time and energy.

Armchair Interviews says: You will be able to enjoy these tasty recipes all year long and that's a good thing.

        Book Description

The advent of very compact, very powerful digital computers has made it possible to automate a great many processes that formerly required large, complex machinery. Digital computers have made possible revolutionary changes in industry, commerce, and transportation. This book, an expansion and revision of the author's earlier technical papers on this subject, describes the development of automation in aircraft and in the aviation system, its likely evolution in the future, and the effects that these technologies have had -- and will have -- on the human operators and managers of the system. It suggests concepts that may be able to enhance human-machine relationships in future systems. The author focuses on the ability of human operators to work cooperatively with the constellation of machines they command and control, because it is the i interactions among /i these system elements that result in the system's success or failure, whether in aviation or elsewhere. br br Aviation automation has provided great social and technological benefits, but these benefits have not come without cost. In recent years, new problems in aircraft have emerged due to failures in the human-machine relationship. These incidents and accidents have motivated this inquiry into aviation automation. Similar problems in the air traffic management system are predicted as it becomes more fully automated. In particular, incidents and accidents have occurred which suggest that the principle problems with today's aviation automation are associated with its complexity, coupling, autonomy, and opacity. These problems are not unique to aviation; they exist in other highly dynamic domains as well. The author suggests that a different approach to automation -- called "human-centered automation" -- offers potential benefits for system performance by enabling a more cooperative human-machine relationship in the control and management of aircraft and air traffic. br

5 out of 5 stars Strong argument for human-centered air traffic automation.......1999-12-18

Billings covers the evolution of aviation automation, especially in the airborne side of the 'equation', its successes and failures, and the requirements for the future.

Incorporating the principles of human-centered automation early in the development of Air Traffic Management automation, ATC modernization would be well-advanced by also taking advantage of the lessons learned in on-board systems.

In order to maintain the situational awareness of the human operators, the design of ATM automation should be based on the 'management by consent' doctrine. ATM automation should be a 'close mimic' of on-board FMS - so that both the pilot and controller communities have a shared cognitive model of how the systems operate. And the ATM-to-FMS coupling should be procedural, rather than automated, to guarantee the ability of the human operator to safely and efficiently operate the system.

Keeping these three objectives in mind will lead to the implementation of a system that can handle the increasing traffic while not sacrificing the high level of safety we currently enjoy.

I have only one minor issue with this work: Billings mentions AAS - the Advanced Automation System project, begun in 1981 - quite often. This book was published in 1997; by that time, FAA had terminated this project.

4 out of 5 stars Fundamental for understanding functions of ATC........1999-11-09

This is a very good functional decomposition of the major elements of the ATC system, focusing on the work structure and systemic tasks of the humans and the equipment that comprise the system. The later chapters introducing the concepts of automation and the attendant potential benefits and risks of different automation strategies are critical for understanding the follow-on book, "The Future of Air Traffic Control: Human Factors and Automation". Both these works serve as the major rationale for selecting the "human-centered" approach to automation.

This book is written for the "lay-man" interested in ATC and automation. There are a few over-simplifications, but I cannot imagine how better to describe the general functions without getting excessively technical.

One minor "ding": Boeing's former competition in airframe manufacture was not "McDonald Douglas" (Overview, page 28), but "McDonnell-Douglas".

5 out of 5 stars Superb exploration of Air Traffic automation and risk........1999-11-23

This important follow-on to "Flight to the Future" covers the automation initiatives in ATC modernization. The various programs in development are detailed from the human-centered automation viewpoint, including assessments of the potential risk involved in implementing them. (Refinements in the various programs since the report was published make some of this detail dated, but the underlying automation approach has remained consistent.)

This report is critical because it leads one to ask human factors questions beyond color scheme and font size and display lay-out: namely, what is the purpose of this function in the system, and what does the system gain *and lose* if that function is automated? That is, is automating this function going to provide enough benefit to system safety and performance to off-set the risks thereof?

Not content to merely ask the questions, the NRC panel also presents over a dozen pages of solid recommendations for mitigating the risk of automating air traffic control functions, emphasizing the human-centered automation approach.

            Book Description

The study of human factors has progressed greatly in the past 10 years, particularly with regard to the literature available in applied areas. The authors of this text focus on the most important aspects of this literature--the increasing concern over the deregulation of airlines and the increase in aviation accidents. The book covers general system safety, human perception, information processing, and cognitive load capacity during air traffic control performance, as well as team coordination, selection and training of personnel, work station and software design, and communication issues.

1 out of 5 stars this book is for engineers.......2006-09-11

I'm merely an air traffic control student, but i've had this book assigned by a professor and it's my assesment that it is intended more for the benefit of air traffic management systems engineers than for those looking to gain a basic working knowledge of current systems and how people use them. I suspect that she picked it because of title, and becuase Flight to the Future: Human Factors in Air Traffic Control is apparently out of print. I find it very dry and overly-technical for my needs.

"The International Journal of Aviation Psychology" is the undisputed leading publication on psychology in aviation. It is extremely technical, and not for the casual reader; for those interested in human factors, aviation safety, or psychology it is quite informative, if a bit dry at times.

Most issues would get five stars from me, but this one rates three because some of the articles are getting a bit long in the tooth, and have to a degree been supplanted by information found in other editions, most notably Volume 11, Number 1 from 2001.

This is a great series for the industry or academic professional, but is definitely not recommended for armchair enthusiasts.

              Book Description

Despite its increasing importance, the verification and validation of the human-machine interface is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of system development. Although much has been written about the design and development process, very little organized information is available on how to verify and validate highly complex and highly coupled dynamic systems. Inability to evaluate such systems adequately may become the limiting factor in our ability to employ systems that our technology and knowledge allow us to design. This volume, based on a NATO Advanced Science Institute held in 1992, is designed to provide guidance for the verification and validation of all highly complex and coupled systems. Air traffic control is used an an example to ensure that the theory is described in terms that will allow its implementation, but the results can be applied to all complex and coupled systems. The volume presents the knowledge and theory in a format that will allow readers from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply it to the systems for which they are responsible. The emphasis is on domains where significant advances have been made in the methods of identifying potential problems and in new testing methods and tools. Also emphasized are techniques to identify the assumptions on which a system is built and to spot their weaknesses.

                Description:
Human reliability assessment (HRA) currently uses various approaches to determine and quantify human error. These approaches are increasingly being employed in various safety-critical domains, such as air traffic management and its ground component air traffic control. HRA research over the years has shown the important role of the context in which human errors take place. Recent techniques now put more emphasis on the definition of key contextual factors and their impact on the reliability of human performance. This paper presents a review of the current understanding of contextual factors in various industries. It uses this together with results from controller interviews to identify the contextual factors relevant to controller recovery from equipment failures in air traffic control. These factors should be used in conjunction with an appropriate method to analyse the performance of a controller during the process of recovery from failures.

The benefit of this book will depend on your use for it.

                  Pluses:
This book has good questions to ask yourself as you go through the interior design process. Every aspect is covered from furniture to flooring to lighting. This book also shows a nice range of styles.

                  Minuses:
The main drawback is that some of the pictures seem out-of-focus and/or small. Also, there are no projects, which may or may not be a minus, depending on your purpose for buying the book.

                  Recommendation:
if you are looking for a book to organize your thoughts and give you useful tips on decorating, this is a decent one. However, if you are looking to be inspired by photographs, you might want to skip the book.
