Book Description
Jamie Brisick is one of those lucky few who has managed to spend the majority of his adult life traveling the globe. Through his lifelong connection with the surfing world, first as a professional surfer and later as the editor of Surfing Magazine and currently as a freelance writer for a number of magazines he has found himself traveling from Brazil to Bali, Paris to Hawaii, Fiji to New York and points beyond. It's only natural that Brisick would accumulate a powerful and diverse collection of images on his journeys, and equally natural that he would have words to go with them. Whether they are travel sketches, philosophical musings or barstool rants, Brisick aspires to agitate, educate and entertain, sometimes all at once. It's a collection of visceral, vivid, joyous images and thoughts from a unique and not always serious perspective.

Lots of Photos, little text.......2004-08-29
Note: this book is mostly photographs and images, with very little text. Not that there is anything wrong with it, it's just that I expected a lot more reading material. The book took me less than an hour to read cover to cover.
We Approach Our Martini's.......2004-04-26
"We Approach Our Martinis with Such High Expectations," has presented us with yet another format for surf literature: the slide show. Jamie Brisik narrates the adventure in a voice dripping with texture to tell us that surfing is about more than what happens in the water. It is also about what happens between the sheets, between disappointment and triumph, and between man and God. Brisick's crisp lens brings to focus the smelly details no matter where they might lead him. All the varied scenes managed to fall into an expression of the more fragile side of the human condition. He voices a challenge to everyone and seems to be more sympathetic to the places and experiences he had than to any audience. This conversational read was done in a voice only earned through years seriously searching for the answers to timeless questions. Though not offering concrete answers, the poetry reveals that it is not for a lack of reflection.
i've approached my martinis with such high expectations.......2002-07-07
i was born to read good books, i was born to have poetry in my life, i was born to buy this book as you should!!!
IT'S ALRIGHT.......2002-05-27
COMING FROM BRISICK I WAS EXPECTING MORE OF A BOOK ON SURFING.THERE ARE VIRTUALLY NO PICS ON SURFING(BAD).TOO MUCH ON BRASIL.SOME OF THE STORIES ARE ENTERTAINING THOUGH.
dry and dirty.......2002-05-16
how can one human being have done so much in such a short time? it's like the universe just throws amazing experiences at jamie, and we're lucky enough that he's an incredible, dedicated writer and photographer who records them for us. i was born to have this book on my shelf. now if i could just get it autographed.

First cigars and gin topped the list. Then red meat, Cadillacs, coffee with caffeine, and sleeping late all began to edge toward extinction. Barbara Holland makes an impassioned defense of life's little pleasures in a book that will entertain diehard sinners, comfort the secretly licentious, and encourage those who just need a little nudge to abandon jogging and no-fat salad dressing.
Book Description
Here is a refreshing look at life as it ought to be. Bare feet, gardening, dawdling over the newspaper, oversleeping, and idle summer vacations are infinitely more satisfying than counting fat grams, eating only vegetables, and sitting behind that desk every day. So toss out the guilt and rebel. Don't just stop and smell the flowers--call in sick and lie among them, preferably with a good friend, a bottle of wine, and a handful of chocolates. Endangered Pleasures is a delightful reminder that rest and relaxation are more rewarding than a job performance review. After all, life's too short. Why not have some fun while you're supposed to be living it?
Customer Reviews:
Barbara Holland, the urban Mark Twain.......2007-06-27
All of Barbara Holland's books are great and this is just another one of the best.
Delicious!.......2007-03-23
The subtitle reads, "In Defense of Naps, Bacon, Martinis, Profanity, and Other Indulgences." The Washington Post said it's, "so pleasingly subversive that the reader falls into a reverie of his own remembered pleasures." The chapters have titles like, "Naps," "Speed," "Bad Words," "Whistling," "Bare Feet," and "Gardening." They are every bit as wonderful as they sound.
The crux of this read is that rest and relaxation with friends and family are infintely more rewarding (and important) than a job performance review. This is my favorite gift for workaholics and makes perfect vacation reading.
Highly recommended.
Wonderful wonderful!.......2007-03-22
I even sent this book to my friend who has stopped smoking and drinking - so it's not just a book about only the real decadent things in life - it's about rejoicing in all the pleasures!
A great read that makes you feel like life is worth living!!
Endangered Pleasures: In Dfense of Naps, Bacon, Martinis, Profanity, and Other Indulgences.......2007-01-05
This is one of Barbara Holland's best. Read this and you will feel free to cancel all your New Year's resolutions!
A talent for recording perceptions.......2007-01-02
ENDANGERED PLEASURES is perhaps mistitled as it's not credible to think any of the 67 things and activities listed, from the morning paper to cigarettes to bare feet to weekends to gambling to winter to babies, are actually in peril of extinction. "Unappreciated" might be more a apropos term instead of "endangered". The book's subtitle says it all more succinctly: IN DEFENSE OF NAPS, BACON, MARTINIS, PROFANITY AND OTHER INDULGENCES.
Author/essayist Barbara Holland has a remarkable talent for perceiving the small details of life and living. Or rather, a talent for remembering what she perceives and subsequently bringing it to the attention of the lumpish rest of us. For instance, on the "being there" phase of travel:
"The hee-haw of the ambulance in the foreign streets sings with a pure and alien glamour, quite unrelated to the irritating scream of emergency vehicles back home." Now, I've noticed that on my own overseas walk-abouts, but would never think it worth mentioning to the folks back home.
And, on a more sobering note, regarding the psychology of crowds:
"Face to face with, say, Adolph Hitler at a table for two, we would have jeered at his passions, protested, flounced out in a snit. In a crowd of thousands, all cheering and brandishing fists, we might have stood in the path of the electric current, felt the blood of common cause rise joyfully in our throats, and cheered too ... Deep inside each of us lurks a chained lemming, struggling to break free, and we need to keep an eye on it."
I admire Holland's talent for social commentary. She reminds me of Andy Rooney, but without the crankiness. Rooney might like to think he's a national treasure; Barbara truly is.

Traditional and Contemporary Stained Glass Designs (Dover Electronic Clip Art).......2006-01-20
I had hoped that the CD versions of the clip art would have had a better quality of the picture for input to stain glass programs for enlarging. The quality was the same as what I was already getting from scanning in on a scanner from
books. I did not know that all 3 clip art versions I purchased at the same time were the same or very similar as the books by the similar titles that I already had from Dover. I now just do not have to scan the pictures into my computer.
Book Description
What can you accomplish in a weekend, start to finish? Any one of the more than fifty-five exciting projects in
Debbie Travis' Weekend Projects, by the star of the TV series The Painted House. Following the inspiring full-color photographs and simple instructions, even the beginning do-it-yourselfer can create beautiful pillows and frames, boxes and screens, and slipcovers -- each in just two days or less.
In transforming a home from plain to personalized, it's the little touches that make the difference. "The furniture and accessories you make or decorate yourself are the most successful," Debbie explains. "It's not just about the money we save . . . it's the experience of creating something by hand." Not only are these projects quick, inexpensive, and easy to make, but they also yield some of the most appealing and useful objects you could own. For example, a plain dresser or shelving unit can be completely restyled with a few hardware store add-ons and a bit of paint. With no-sew Velcro and self-adhesive hemming tape, anyone can hang patterned curtains or create a decorative pillow. A roll of screening and a staple gun turn a frame into a kitchen divider and tool rack in one. In sections that cover tables, screens, frames and mirrors, lighting, storage, fabrics and floorcloths, and garden furniture and accessories, Debbie visits every room of the house. Each project has been photographed to show not only the finished results, but also the step-by-step techniques needed. With so much variety in materials, processes, and end results, Debbie promises over a year of fun weekends, with a beautiful house as the bonus.
Lavishly illustrated with more than 350 full-color photographs,
Debbie Travis' Weekend Projects is also the weekend crafter's manual, packed with valuable information, including tips on where to find pieces to make over, a complete listing and explanation of tools and materials needed, and instructions on how to prepare an array of different surfaces.
Whether it is a basic wood frame, a pressed-tin candlestick, or a velvet pillow, these treasures may take just a weekend to make, but they will bring a lifetime
of enjoyment.
Customer Reviews:
Preparation Chapter best part of the book.......2005-12-23
Debbie Travis' books are a mixed bag. Some of them I really like and some are scarce on steps and details. This book falls into the latter category. The best part of the book to me were the two chapters, "Preparing your Project for Decoration" and "The Professional Touch". These chapters cover repairs of pieces, sanding, stripping, glazes and how to tint glazes, plaster, varnishes, stains, etc. and the best way to apply them for a professional finish.
This book covers all kinds of projects, indoor, outdoor, furniture, curtains, floors, screens, slipcovers and more.
Like another reviewer I thought many of the projects were very plain, but the beautiful ones sometimes seemed to leave out steps. Some of the more interesting projects were the:
~ vinegar-grained table (pg 70),
~ crackle varnish clock table (pg 76),
~ classical screen (pg 111),
~ faux leather frame (pg 118)
~ some of the curtains
The most interesting project that immediately caught my eye was a lamp made from an antique silver coffeepot (pg 130). Even though it had a full page photograph, it was not covered at all.
Very disappointing book.
Just not enough.......2005-11-06
I agree with other reviewers that this book has some great projects, some of which I plan to do, and it gave me some very good ideas. The problem for me is too few pictures and, in some cases, incomplete instructions.
For example, on page 70 is a gorgeous vinegar-grained and faux tortoiseshell table. But the instructions are incomplete, explaining and showing just two small sections of the work and parts of the process, and not giving instructions for the remainder of the table. The table has a very nice border that separates the center and the tortoiseshell edge, but the instructions don't even acknowledge its existence.
In several other cases, the pictures with the instructions seem to stop in mid process. It would be much better if the pictures continued through to the finished product.
This book feels as if Ms. Travis tried to jam as many projects into a set number of pages as possible, which gave me the feeling of being hurried while I was looking at the book.
I think she paid too little attention to giving full instructions and providing enough pictures. If expanded to include these things, this would be a five-star book.
Better books on the market than this one........2004-11-01
This book looks good at first glance, but then it falls apart. The nice colored pictures cannot compensate for the poor hints and guidelines in creating the same effects. Also, many of the finished projects were downright ugly.
I expected this book to offer something really fresh but it didn't. I feel majorly ripped off.
Inspirational!!.......2003-06-20
Debbie Travis really breaks down projects that look complicated into easy steps. In looking for info on one project, I immediately became inspired to do several of her projects. They are all easilly adapted to your home and style, and definetly make you want to go for it!!
Great projects!.......2003-04-12
Lots of easy to do projects. Most of the projects can be adapted to suit your own decorating style.

Customer Reviews:
o.k........2006-01-26
i think there are better do it youself home sewing decorater books out there. this one doesn't have a lot of projects that i will use. nor does it have the great ideas that i've come to expect from waverly.
Book Description
Whether it's a city park, a suburban backyard, a farmer's field, or the sandy seashore, there's a treasure trove of natural art materials out there. Twigs, vines, pinecones, flowers, leaves, rocks, shells, moss, feathers - they're all gifts of the earth. Add just a few inexpensive store-bought items, such as glue, string, and wire, and anyone can create beautiful, natural works of art.
In NATURE'S ART BOX, writer, gardener, and nature-crafter Laura C. Martin offers 65 cool projects kids will love to make, using materials they can find just about anywhere. She explains how to make paints and inks from flowers and other plants; how to use shells, moss, seedpods, and cones to embellish large objects; how to build elf-sized furniture; how to decorate picture frames, birdhouses, and keepsake boxes with woodland treasures; and how to dig clay, weave vines, and make natural dyes to color T-shirts.
While Martin teaches kids to see the possibilities of the natural world, she also teaches them to respect what the earth offers. She warns them against stripping bark off live trees, plucking every flower in the field, and clearing the ground of every nut and seed. NATURE'S ART BOX helps kids learn to be good artists and conscientious stewards of nature's resources.
Customer Reviews:
Great kids nature craft book!.......2007-09-10
First of all, you have to remember that this is a KIDS craft book. :-) My two boys have both really enjoyed doing crafts out of this book. They are 12 and 8 yrs. A lot more in depth than other nature craft books I have seen for kids.
Wonderful Nature Crafts - Great projects.......2006-02-19
Here in the Northeast US, we're still gripped by the icy fingers of winter. Hopefully, spring will come soon. Meanwhile, I'll while away the gray days with Nature's Art Box, a sturdy and well-written hardcover book with 65 nature crafts projects for kids. This book is appropriate for parents, teachers, home-schoolers and group leaders. It's a nature crafts course for educators in a cosy, attractive book. The book is divided into several sections based on different types of natural materials:
* Vines, Twigs, Cones, and Moss
* Gourds, Pods, Husks, and Seeds
* Clay Stones, Sand, and Shells
* Paints, Inks, and Dyes
* Flowers and Leaves
* Stamps, Stencils, Molds and Seals
The introduction and appendix are full of helpful information on gathering materials and other crafts supplies to create the projects. The projects vary in complexity - some are very simple, and others require adult supervision. Safety tips and instructions are plentiful.
Here's a sampling of the 65+ projects included:
* Bark and Moss House
* Angel Ornament
* Okra Pod Canoe and People
* Sand Painting
* Shell Buttons
* Homemade Natural Paint
* Fern Print
* Dried-Flower Fairy
* Leaf Rubbing Gift Wrap
Right next to this book on a shelf, I picked up a nature crafts book that was lovely to look at, with elegant design and great photography. But the projects were scanty and simplistic. This book is the antidote - it is full of information, projects and ideas. You will turn to it year after year, season after season. Highly recommended.
don't buy.......2005-11-03
I love creative ideas especially when the materials used are abundant and easy to find, unfortunately there is more creativity in the illustrations of this book than the ideas for crafts (I give it one star for this reason alone). This book proves that ANYONE can publish a book. Don't waste your money on this.
