5 out of 5 stars Visions of Sugarplums is Truly a Fabulous Holiday Season Cookbook.......2005-08-25

This is truly an old-fashioned style smorgasboard of a holiday season book. The origins of the holiday days in December and January are detailed and the recipes included have a meaning specific to Christmas, Hanukah and various European-celebrated holidays during that time of the year. Marvelous cakes, scrumptious candies, fabulous traditional cookies...I have used this book for over 28 years for holiday cooking and ideas, and a reminder as to the meaning behind the holidays. All of Mimi Sheraton's books are truly wonderful--this is my personal favorite and always a pleasure to read thru and use. The Gingerbread Cake that was a favorite of Abraham Lincoln's is fabulous; I learned to make truffles from this book, as well. A marvelous book for those of us who cherish the spirit of the holidays, family, and home.

Whoops! I purchased this book, but was sent another one, Visions of Sugarplums, 1992. It's not a bad book, but I was disappointed that I didn't get the one I ordered. I think I'd rate Sheraton's book at least a 4, probably a 5. Donna Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Educational.......2000-08-29

This book is perfect for anyone wanting to make Christmas a little more exciting and varied. Recipes from all over the world are included. Some are traditional and well known favorites while others are truly unique. Most ingredients are fairly simple to obtain, despite the sometimes exotic nature of the recipe.

Reading this book is also a good way to learn about Christmas customs and beliefs in other countries.

Truly an international and festive culinary adventure for everyone. I recommend this book very highly.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent investment for lovers of Amish quilts........1998-03-14

Amish: The Art of the Quilt by Robert Hughes chronicles the quilt collection at Esprit corporate headquarters in San Francisco. Begun haphazardly by Doug Tompkins in 1971 as a way to cover bare office walls, it has evolved into a showcase of exquisite examples of Amish artistry.

Robert Hughes writes a concise history of the Amish people and their distinctive quilts. But best of all are the 9" by 9" full-color plates of 82 representative quilts. Julie Silber, who became the collection's curator in 1983, shares her comments on each quilt, pointing out its adherence to or deviation from Amish tradition.

This book represents an excellent investment for all lovers of the vibrant colors and intricate stitching so characteristic of Amish quiltmaking.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a treasure........2005-03-08

This book is outstanding. The three scholarly articles by the authors, the beautiful color photographs of Amish quilts, and even the abundant white space in the lay out of this book all serve to communicate explicitly and implicitly the art, the lifestle and the values of the Amish. This book is a feast for the eyes. Many quilts are shown both in their entirety to show the impact of the quilt as a whole, as well as in close up photos highlighting the hand quilting. And the colors in the photos are brilliant, capturing the startling and moving contrasts and color selections that distinguish Amish quilts. Also scattered among the articles in the first half of the book are both black and white and color photos and illustrations of Amish life. Invest in the hardcover edition, if you are able. This book is a treasure.

Loss Forgiveness and Restoration. The Face of Christ illustration and the accompanying story that has changed lives all around the globe.First it is a truelife story of an advertising executive an artist and a pastor Joe Castillo and the way God changed him. It also tells of the many lives touched by this simple illustration.Done before a live audience the very first time it had a powerful impact on those who watched. This motivated the artist to reproduce it in pen ink prints. As an artist Joes struggle to make a living was suddenly compounded by having his wife diagnosed with cancer. They had no insurance to cover the mounting debt but at an opportune time a friend offered to reproduce the artwork on marble plaques and pay royalties. The sales of the plaques were amazing surely this was the answer to all their financial problems But the story seems to grind to a halt. The friend refuses to pay royalties on the artwork that is selling world wide and Joe loses his wife to cancer. It becomes a daily struggle to forgive the man who was profiting from his artwork and overcome the bitterness at the loss of his wife. The plaques seem to show up everywhere compounding his anger and resentment. For Joe it became a bitter symbol of everything that had gone wrong. If you have ever struggled with forgiveness. If some events in your life just dont make sense God can use this artwork and the story that goes with it to help you put the pieces together.

        Book Description

A rare collection of 90 antique Amish quilts for children is show-cased in this brilliantly colorful volume. Few antique Amish crib quilts remain because they were put to hard use in large families which typically averaged seven children. But Sara Miller of Kalona, Iowa, herself a member of the Old Order Amish, began building a collection of lovely antique crib quilts which she learned about as the proprietor of a fabric and quilt shop. Thus began an unusual odyssey-Sara, who once disparaged the quilting tradition of her heritage, thinking it dull and drab, began to see its graphic beauty when outsiders became intent on owning Amish quilts. The richly colorful quilts featured here come from Amish communities through the Midwestern United States. In addition to 90 full-color plates of the exquisite quilts is interpretive commentary and documentation, plus three essays elaborating on the significance of the collection. Author Janneken Smucker descends from a line of quilters in the Amish-Mennonite community of Goshen, IN; Dr. Patricia Cox Crews is Director of the International Quilt Study Center in Lincoln, NE; Dr. Linda Welters is Professor of Textiles at the University of Rhode Island. Amish Crib Quilts from the Midwest: The Sara Miller Collection is an unusual feast visually. The analyses that accompany the boldly beautiful images contribute scholarship to this intersection of art and the life of the Amish.

5 out of 5 stars Amish Crib Quilts From the Midwest: The Sara Miller Collection.......2006-06-29

Sara Miller is Amish and owns her own quilt shop out on the family farm near Kalona, Ia. Who better to have the best collection of Amish crib quilts ever. Crib quilts are used hard and loved to shreds by their owners. These quilts are beautiful rare quilts that have survived childhood. I lost my first book of Sara's quilts that I bought from her at her store 13 years ago. I was very happy to find the current version on Amazon, so I could purchase it again for my quilt reference library. If you love quilts, this book is worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Colorful and Inspiring.......2004-08-17

This book contains page after page of richly colored Amish quilts in a variety of patterns and settings - literally a rainbow of quilts! At times I found the text to be a bit dry, but the background and historical information was very thorough and definitely worth reading. The author has put together a wonderful, well-rounded collection of quilts that will inspire you to want to make a few of your own. If you are a fan of Amish quilts, you will absolutely love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Surprising and lovely..........2004-01-31

This book presents beautiful and clear color photographs of the Sara Miller Amish crib quilt collection, combined with the authors' detailed knowledge of the Amish quilting experience. Not having known much previously about Amish quilting, I was surprised by how beautiful and modern in appearance the quilts were. If you love to look at photos of interesting quilts, and are interested in American history, this is an outstanding book.

          Book Description

In a remote canyon in northern New Mexico the early morning stillness is broken by voices chanting praises to the Lord. And thus begins the daily cycle in the Godcentered life and search of the Benedictine monks at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert.Seeking God is a monastic tapestry. The daily life of the monks is interwoven with the seasonal changes and celebrations and the candid words of the monks as they speak of their life their hopes and doubts their hardships fears and joys their prayer. Weaving this tapestry together are the hauntingly beautiful chants songs of praise and reverence that echo through the darkness before dawn throughout the day through the solemnity of Vespers in the evening and Compline at night. The majestic beauty of the environment captured in every season reflects a peace and tranquility that becomes an integral part of this monastic tapestry. The high red rock walls of the canyon where eagles fly cradle the valley whose stillness is broken only by the flowing waters of the Chama River and the winds that occasionally funnel through. Seeking God presents the ongoing process of the monastic way through the words and activities of these Benedictine monks as they move through the day and through the seasons in their search for God through prayer work study and song.

5 out of 5 stars Good book but not what I thought.......2006-12-20

I ordered this book as part of my mother's Christmas present. In all fairness, the information about the book did not indicate that it included templates, so I really couldn't deduct any stars for that. I just presumed it included the templates. The pictures are truly beautiful as are the quilts. Mom's pretty smart, so she'll figure out the pattens. I read Beverly Lewis's novels about the Amish, so seeing some of the patterns she has mentioned in her books was great. I even learned what Shoo-fly pie is.

5 out of 5 stars What a BEAUTIFUL American Craft Treasure-Trove!.......2003-11-13

For the color photos alone, this book is a work of art!

WOW! What a collection! It's great even as a "coffee table book" or art book, much more for those who are interested or involved in actual quilt-making or collecting.

Some of the patterns are striking! It's even better than the Antiques Roadshow to be able to find all these quilts/photos in one handy reference. Amish values have a lot to teach the rest of us, and this amazing craftmanship is one of them!

The chapters (found nowhere else!): Color Among the Amish, Quilts in the Life Cycle, Excerpts from a Grandmother's Diary, A Quilting, Contentment Within Limitations, Readings and Sources, Index.

5 out of 5 stars All too brief encounter with Brethren quiltmakers.......2001-12-26

This is an absolutely beautiful book, with full color images of both Mennonie quilts and the landscape of "Amish Country." My only complaint is that it's much too short! The paperbound book is about 125 pages long, and almost exactly the style, size and format of the Amish quilt books by Rachel and Ken Pellman. The story of each quilt is given, whether as just a name, year and current owner, or through a short reminiscence regarding the quilt or its maker. Readers are immediately drawn into the feeling of simplicity, peace, thrift, and heritage as they are treated to lovely photographs of the natural world that surrounds the daily lives of the Mennonite quilters. The quilts themselves, done in slightly more "worldly" fabrics and patterns than their Amish neighbors, will inspire and dazzle you. I love making quilts with traditional designs, such as "Broken Star," "Harvest Sun," "Tumbling Blocks," and "Cactus Basket," all of which I have made or am currently working on. This book is my well-worn reference, my inspiration, my small window to the Mennonite world, and my source of serenity when I find myself going from design hunt page turning to reading the engaging text. If you love traditional quiltmaking as much as I do and can manage to find a copy of this book (now out of print), you will be so very glad you did.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A textile artbook, showcasing the quilts themselves .......2005-05-12

Illustrated with full-color photographs on every page, Amish Quilts Of Lancaster County is a gorgeous showcase of its title. Brief text introductions ground the reader in Amish quiltmaking history and techniques, but the majority of Amish Quilts Of Lancaster County is effectively a textile artbook, showcasing the quilts themselves in all their bold color and down-to-earth patterns. Most sample quilts are shown in an overall photograph, a detail photograph, and a photograph of the quilt's back. A truly beautiful sampling, and a joy for avid quiltmakers and quilt aficionados to simply page through.
